To add the insanity missing from that statement, I read yesterday that Musk is planning a "SpaceEx" option for the Tesla Roadster, which is getting a re-invention. Get ready. They use the back seat room to build in cool air jet engines, that will allow the car to hover. It's not just for crowd thrills, it's incorporated into the car's handling and should INCREASE acceleration (of the world's fastest production car) and benefit handling by being able to change the load to the road on demand. Someone said "give it wings and it will fly" or words to that effect and Musk said "probably". Next time a sixteen year old with a VR gaming rig, a vap-pen and a week old driving license says to dad, "Hey , can my friends and I take your new car for a "spin" you'd better say NO. I could go on but I'll simply say Rivian deserve to succeed particularly when they produce such a stellar product right out of the gate.
This is the most and best detail video I have ever seen about Rivian. Thank you for sharing this absolutely interesting and fascinating transition from gas to electric.
Haha fun watching Johnny trying to contain himself! I’ll never own one of these, but makes me happy they exist - some truly brilliant design. It’s every grownup schoolboys tonka-toy dream!
Filip Giera haha you misunderstand, I mean I have no need for one of these, I’m not a big truck kind of guy, so I’d probably never buy one. But I still love the design, the utility and the company’s attitude.
Brilliant!! Rivian deserves to succeed. No range anxiety with 400+ mile range, 0 to 60 mph in 3 sec, 7-seater with leg-room in mind for the 3 row. Well, thought-through features and design. Measurements in metric as they should be!
Rivian has the right idea. Big SUVs and luxury trucks are really REALLY in, the only downside being gas prices. Take that out of the equation and you have a serious money maker on your hands
Not just that, but now you can run one of these and if you power it with solar/wind you can feel genuinely much better about it than running an F150. Hell, even from the grid it will run rings around the current crop of trucks in terms of pollution.
Ryukachoo - Glad you mentioned gas prices: every time petrol prices rise, SUV and pickup sales take a dive. The high oil prices around 2005 was the thing that ultimately doomed GM. They bet the farm on land yachts and had nothing to sell when people stopped buying them. Could you imagine having a business that depends on the price of a (heavily manipulated ) commodity from unstable, terrorist-funding regions? Automakers should be cheering the arrival of EVs, and so should every patriotic American.
@@ClockworksOfGL who doesn't love the prospect of a land yacht like this that costs less than a hybrid Camry to run. And because you can make your own fuel, prices can't be dictated quite so readily.
Truth is, and it's part of the plan. When we get enough electric vehicles on the road, electricity will triple, quadruple in price. There's no getting away from the cost of driving.
I was also amazed as I watched it because it has surprise after surprise - the quality, the design, the capacity, the price... so many amazing touches. It's very impressive.
I love everything about these vehicles, including the funky looking headlights -- that unique design was intentional and well-executed. It may not be everyone's cup of tea -- but over time it will gain wider acceptance. On all other features: Well done, Rivian! Wishing you tremendous success.
That is a seriously good idea especially if it had a connection to share the power with the vehicle for greater range The extra battery in the caravan would be brilliant, you could double or triple the range of the vehicle with the extra battery
Agree, it's the real deal. However, getting it from this show prototype to assembly line is their biggest challenge. Most analysts are saying Rivian will be bankrupt by then.
@@aussie2uGA I really think they do have a product so interesting, that investors and the puplic will stay with them in the 1-2 years of production problems which are to expect.
@@aussie2uGA They said that about Tesla too. It looks like Rivian has the engineering figured out. And they aren't promising 5,000 units per week either.
Don't believe everything you read or hear. On paper a modern engine can have 300 hp and 400 feet of torque and get out pulled by a 1970s engine with 140 hp and 200 feet of torque. Why because it where the hp and toque is made?
Well that's the thing. Tesla leases their patents for their electric chargers so that companies like this can utilized the same system and charge anywhere in the world.
Yes exactly. I am a Tesla fanboy but I want more EVs above all else. There is room for many EV companies to be successful. These trucks look great but will die without charging access.
My first encounter with an electric vehicle was in the early 80's. A AA battery powered die cast monster truck. That thing went through EVERYTHING at its own peril. These EVs are a childhood fantasy come true!
Probably the most exciting vehicle I have seen for a long time. Never a fan of the whole electric thing, before this - this vehicle is taking automotive prowess to the next level, truly. Amazing, and I may well buy one.

If you want an electric car that actually works, is reliable, and has the power, force and experience of REAL car company's behind it, take a look at what Rivian is doing with their pickup trucks. They're concentrating on what THEY do best which is making the drive-train and letting Ford Motor Company complete the vehicle by put their own body, interior, amenities, et al. Being uninformed is OK... being proud of it and exclaiming it to the world is just plain moronic. Now go stand in front of your favorite fast moving Peterbilt with a red flag!
Fantastic! I'm a rancher in the Northern Rockies. We have a dozen ICE 4WD vehicles with 60,000 to nearly half a million miles on them. RAM, Ford, Toyota, old Dodge water trucks, you name it. Operating conditions range from 100+ degrees F to 20 below zero. It was -13 F earlier this this week. Maintenance all the time. Dust, mud, snow, ice. If you build it and it can operate effectively in that temperature range, has excellent traction, and won't fall apart, I'll buy one.
As a contractor I drive a Toyota Tacoma and have been asking for an electric vehicle. Who knows if Toytota will ever heed the call..I hope these make it to market, we need this!
Gonna be alot of overtime if you run out of batteries with a load of equipment and it takes hours to charge for it to be mobile again. Plus electrics already have major heat issues, either with the batteries or with the motors. I wouldn't trust them to reliably pull the amount of load they're claiming. Look up issues with Tesla's and other EVs and you'll see this whole electric is more reliable BS is just that. Most EVs won't make it to 100,000 miles without a new battery pack which is often the most expensive thing in the car. For a Tesla that's at least 6,000$ plus installation. For this probably more still. Not knocking what you want, but an electric truck won't be ready for actual work duty for some time. This is for suburban dad's to put their kids bicycles in, not much more.
Maybe in 20 years when you can recharge them within 15 minutes and not have to throw the batteries out in under 5 years for $5000 - $10,000. Toyota = top notch. Little electric golf carts with off road tires - shit.
I didn't think there was a single desirable full ev car in the world, I didn't even like this one at first. But I have to admit that at the end of this video, I now totally want one of these! The interior looks amazing, the power numbers speak for themselves, both the suv and pickup are probably the most practical vehicles you can get, even those weird headlight are growing on me. I'm super impressed.
I am blown away by these two Rivians also - superb design features. Wonder what the Tesla pickup will bring. Elon knows the Rivian and said it will be different to anything else. Prepare to be blown away even further guys. It’s all good
Fair dinkum! You are going to keep us up to date with specs pricing and dates! It looks like a awesome vehicle. Still not used to the front end like the Tesla 3 but who knows it might be the done thing now.
A few things they failed to mention it has a built in air compressor and AC jacks to power your tools. The air compressor connectors are in the truck bed area with the AC jacks. Franz von Holzhausen Tesla design head went to the product unveiling him being there was big because this was the first time I seen him take a personal interested. About 2 weeks later Elon announced that he is very excited about Tesla truck and that he has put it as a priority. Obviously Rivian made enough of an impression that Tesla pushed up the timeline. Based on Elon's tweet he put the Model 3 ramp, solar roof "big news at the time, Model Y and the truck both at around the same timeline then the Roadster. Still charging is going to be an issue and Tesla has a massive lead and I don't see anyone really stepping up to bring a huge number or chargers to match Tesla. If you own a truck you will likely be doing a lot of traveling you would likely want access to fast charging.
I normally am right there on the "must have supercharger network" issue, but at 400 miles range you are looking at just one recharge for a days driving, and likely a large percentage of trips will not require a recharge at all. That is LA to Vegas and arriving with over 100 miles range left.
@9600GTMAN this is a fully developed ready to hit the market vehicle this isn't some fly by night vaporware company. The "prototypes" shown are fully flushed out, fully viable and look production ready. I think your contempt may be a bit misplaced this time.
@9600GTMAN it's already been crash tested and approved 5 stars by IHS. They basically are at the point where they readying the factory to begin production. This is the natural progression of a project that's been run correctly. The fact that they are showing the world a ready to go vehicle shows how far along they are. Now as long as they don't run out of money going to production then we'll be seeing R1T's and S1T's on the road within a year. I hope they make it because their design is quite amazing.
@9600GTMAN Rivian bought an old Mitsubishi manufacturing plant in the states and have already set it up to produce the vehicles. They are doing everything Tesla didn't do when they started mass production. And yes, the vehicles are already ready for the road.
@9600GTMAN Ford has shown some interest in Rivian. I don't think that would be the case if there were any inkling that it wouldn't be put into production.
Wish our government was more open to electrification and renewable and sustainable energy solutions but big oil has a pretty good stranglehold on us right now. Too much money being poured in to politicians to make that change over like the Euros and Chinese have anytime soon. But it will happen as well someday.
Tesla was going for heavy duty hard look. Telsa is going for commercial clients. If Tesla had made a version like this, people might say it doesn’t look tough. Doesn’t look industrial.
Also... Untill I see quite a few independent tests on 10k being towed by an electric truck in the heat of summer all i see this as is a short range tow vehicle . And if Rivian in fact teams with Ford who is known for buit in breakdowns just after the warranty expires; Ford based on historical facts (GM not excluded and Nissan has recently adopted), I fear will do no favor to any electric company or the true potential and reliability of the technology....might I sugest a governing agency based on the American W. Edward Demings theories and teachings on TQM for electric vehicles to prevent that stragety that unfortunately North American company's have mastered.
When I first saw the front of the Rivian, I was appalled. I thought it was dorky and lame. But I have to say that it's grown on me, and I appreciate the design goals the engineers set.
I thought the same thing. The minute I first saw it i thought they TOTALLY messed up the front end design. I completely Changed my mind a few videos later, I get it. I like it.
The only part of the pickup that I don’t like is the design of the front lights! I hope they go with a more “traditional” design befitting a mans truck. Other than that I would totally consider replacing my 4Runner with one of these some day. (Or better yet, Toyota...you listening?...build us an EV version of the 4Runner and Tacoma, I would totally buy it!)
I have to say, this is quite impressive with real attention to detail! This should have been the next step for Tesla instead of the repetitive Model Y.
Wow! And land rover are blaming Brexit for all their woes when stuff like this shows they've put their money behind the wrong technology, honestly this is the most amazing thing I've seen on here, it's cheap as well, I think this for me heralds a new dawn, car manufacturers that are still meddling with diesels deserve to go out of business.
Jaguar Land Rover already have an EV in production, so they're ahead on that front. Don't underestimate the advantage of already having production and distribution in place.
knoxieman There are a lot of start ups with a big mouth and lots of ambition, yet almost all go bankrupt before selling a single car. Even Tesla almost went bust. Don’t get your hopes up until the first few cars leave the production line.
They all want to change but you can't just stop producing diesel tomorrow and start EV the next day, each car type is years in testing before we get to drive it, then you have the manufacturing it all has to be changed and you need to keep cash flow coming in whilst you make the change, it will happen and JLR & Nissan are leading at the moment.

Salty Pretzel Air suspension is fine for 99% of what these vehicles are asked to do. And you’re likely not to be further than 200kms from home given the range.

Gentlemen / ladies! This looks unreal!! Beautifully designed and thought out. listening to everything you have done to create this truck and all the ingenuity has me, and I am sure, a lot of people very intrigued. I am not sure if it is possible, but something that crossed my mind as a feature you could add (that would legit sell me on this truck 100%) could be something like a "Trail Scout" feature, where you are able to get out and scout the trail in front of the truck to determine the best line, and have the truck follow your direction and self drive the section. not sure if that is possible, but food for thought, that would make you guys stand out waaaaaaaaay ahead of anyone. Even more-so than you already are with this Beauty! Good luck with everything!
Being in Africa I presume we won't see one for a while unfortunately... Awesome, but will have to stick to the Prius and an old Hilux 4x4 for the tougher jobs 😊 Oh and we have quite a bit of loadshedding as electricity is in short supply... Different worlds ..
@@cwr8618 He's in South Africa (clue: load-shedding LOL). Hilux is the most popular pickup in the country, also diesels. No electric cars or pickups for SA unless you get a lot of solar panels on your roof..
"crazy competitive price points"? Hmmm, $65k isn't in everyone's price range and remember, that's the "from" price. While I agree that the price is way better than some, I think the lead-in price would only get you a *very* basic vehicle. Most of the impressive stuff, the stuff that stands out and makes it look impressive, won't be included in that price ~ not even the torch.😁 Still far more feasible than that stupid-looking Tesla though.
Ford is so in trouble. One really noticeable thing is how simple the skateboard chassis/powertrain is. Once battery costs fall, these things are going to be cheap. Huge amount of storage too. If they build a long bed version, the F150 is really in trouble.
I would like to see a long bed version as well. Put a camper on the back with a window boot and it's good enough to sleep in while camping at a scuba diving site.
I feel like it'd be super easy to engineer a long-bed version as well; just lengthen the main framerails for the skateboard by a meter and you've got your 3m long bed.
This is awesome, despite the dyson fan headlights. Really hoping Rivian succeeds, but I want to know more about dealer network, long term service/support, charging stations etc before I drop this kind of money on a start up electric car company. Sadly right now this is a vaporware proof of concept. Proof to an established automaker that their customers want electric trucks. Seriously how has Ford, Toyota, Chevrolet, etc missed this boat?
There is more dealer money to be made from gas car service (electric vehicles are less maintenance dependent). Plus it will not surprise me if big oil subsidizes them under the table to continue petroleum vehicles.
as a previous ev only vehicle owner(Eco Ranger), and a hybrid owner now (cmax plugin), i am not sure, I love my 550+ mile range on my diesel truck, and I love that I can put in another 550+ miles of range at any gas station with a diesel pump in under 5 minutes. Till the battery charging or swapping time gets brought way down the ice powered, or at least ice boosted(hybrids) wont be going anywhere. But yes for 95+% of people and for 95+% of their driving an EV would be a better option, hell that is why my daily is the cmax not the f250. I am trying to go all ev or hybrid but when you have a big old trailer pushing the 10K lbs mark, and have to move it 1000 miles in a day, EV's even this very cool and high on my want list ones, just dont fill that very niece need.
I just love this double cab pickup. My dream vehicle. I don't need that acceleration but that torque I could die for. With a roll cage to support a full-length roof rack, a lockable weatherproof steel canopy for the back. Highlift jack points, a bull bar, wires to protect the windscreen from branches. Perfect for Africa. Would I need a winch, perhaps not. And, by the way, that access door behind the rear seats is not unique. I have them on my 130 Land Rover but they are crude compared to what Rivian has achieved. A RHD version for Anglophone Africa PLEASE. Thumbs up guys, simply brilliant attention to detail.
We need electric vehicles of course. But, we also need smaller cars. Minis not Chelsea tractors, (that is the original minis, not the massive 'minis' now inflicted on our roads.) UK roads just are not big enough for everyone to drive around in trucks.
Amazing bit of kit, ticks every single box, They didn't miss a thing. Now i just need to save 70000. I hope the uk gets it, especially Wales as it would be perfect for our terrain
This looks and sounds like an incredible vehicle. I'm surprised that they don't make the roof all solar panels so that the vehicle can charge during the day and while parked.
The cost doesn't really make it worth it. All the panels on my house (much larger footprint than a truck/suv roof by a huge margin) would charge a 100kwh battery pack in 3 days. These vehicles use a LOT of power so attempting to regain charge via a solar array that small would be so small you might not even notice a difference. And for that minimal efficiency gain you also lose your sunroof(s). Hopefully someday they can improve efficiencies to make that a reality, it would be very cool.
@@bmos02 still if you go on long hike in the mountains it would be nice that your car gets 30% back in 3 days :) as there is no charger in wilderness, not to mention it would keep the battery unloaded and on optimal temperature in sunny winter days, keeping it ice and snow free with heaters over the panels too + if power is peak it could track your gps location from time to time and start preparing car when you get in the range of 5km or less
@@RoadTripTravel well, this is assuming the panels are rigid, traditional photovoltaic units. It is possible to deploy flexible fabric photovoltaics and in the future, you could unfurl an array that could charge the vehicle. Or, if you had a tent made with the material, the tent(s) could contribute their energy on a camping trip to charge...just some blue sky potential ^_^

Hopefully this company takes off as they should so the price goes down a bit more. Not saying it isn't worth what it's currently listed as, but definitely out of my price range lol. Fantastic design and functionality. Looks pretty slick too.
I'm so glad to be alive in this era to see electric and solar cars take off. What a blessing each day to learn and see what the future is bringing us. Haha fun watching Johnny trying to contain himself! I’ll never own one of these, but makes me happy they exist - some truly brilliant design. It’s every grownup schoolboys tonka-toy dream!
"I'll never own one of these" - not with that attitude!
Exactly right... also people worrying about more emissions
It's a gorgeous 1950/2050 design. love love
Ah! Maybe that's why the R1T is one of my dream cars…
Either Jonny is easily impressed or that Rivian is one truly amazing vehicle, I think it's the latter.
I was also amazed as I watched it because it has surprise after surprise - the quality, the design, the capacity, the price... so many amazing touches. It's very impressive.
@@berenguerx No the Bald dude had the hots for the Japanese lady
In all the years I have watched Jonny Smith, I have never seen him lost for words like that. He was literally speechless!
I love everything about these vehicles, including the funky looking headlights -- that unique design was intentional and well-executed. It may not be everyone's cup of tea -- but over time it will gain wider acceptance. On all other features: Well done, Rivian! Wishing you tremendous success.
‘Exciting” is an understatement as far as this car is concerned. ‘Mind-Blowing” at the very least. Good luck!!
You're pretty easy to impress.... you must lead a very very dull existence.
Someone should start designing trailers for these pickups... more battery storage, camping, etc....
Thats an excellent idea
The caravan with extra battery capacity is a brilliant idea!
That is a seriously good idea especially if it had a connection to share the power with the vehicle for greater range
The extra battery in the caravan would be brilliant, you could double or triple the range of the vehicle with the extra battery
they already have them not a new idea
Imagine a trailer with a bigger battery inter-connected for longer journey's with a solar panel roof.
this pickup truck is as game changing as the Tesla model S
Agree, it's the real deal. However, getting it from this show prototype to assembly line is their biggest challenge. Most analysts are saying Rivian will be bankrupt by then.
@@aussie2uGA I really think they do have a product so interesting, that investors and the puplic will stay with them in the 1-2 years of production problems which are to expect.

I'd like to see updated prices. And, where can we get these. I know Tesla has cars and SUV's available local to me, but that's about it.
And that's why you should care about Tesla. Answered your own question.
Utterly original design, applied-technology and torque/figures... I'd buy one!
Don't believe everything you read or hear. On paper a modern engine can have 300 hp and 400 feet of torque and get out pulled by a 1970s engine with 140 hp and 200 feet of torque. Why because it where the hp and toque is made?
@@brianpatrick8787 that's simply not true at all. A modern truck will do literally any job better than some truck from the 70s

My first encounter with an electric vehicle was in the early 80's. A AA battery powered die cast monster truck. That thing went through EVERYTHING at its own peril. These EVs are a childhood fantasy come true!

@@patagualianmostly7437 ...sorry simpleton, change for the sake of change is a moron's way to go.
Careful they might give you a HFC pickup heh.
I'm actually waiting for the Toyota to come out with an EV version of their Tacoma. The Rivian looks ugly as hell.
Heard rumors of Toyota hybrid trucks pretty soon here :)
If you own a truck you will be making a lot of trips to the local store.
The Tesla supercharger network is open to other manufacturers. They just need to pick up the phone. Think that would make it more acceptable.

They need some Italians to help with the styling.

"Getting the proportion wright " The corner stone in design for any car !
Ford is so in trouble.
One really noticeable thing is how simple the skateboard chassis/powertrain is. Once battery costs fall, these things are going to be cheap. Huge amount of storage too.
If they build a long bed version, the F150 is really in trouble.
Ford will definitely have to play catchup.
I would like to see a long bed version as well. Put a camper on the back with a window boot and it's good enough to sleep in while camping at a scuba diving site.
Ford, Ram and every other truck manufacturer are all in big trouble!
I feel like it'd be super easy to engineer a long-bed version as well; just lengthen the main framerails for the skateboard by a meter and you've got your 3m long bed.
Mark my words, Ford will be no more in 20 years (or less).
New creative companies pop up all of the time, and stick around if the product is forward thinking enough. This could be one for the EV truck.
There is more dealer money to be made from gas car service (electric vehicles are less maintenance dependent). Plus it will not surprise me if big oil subsidizes them under the table to continue petroleum vehicles.

The specifications sound wonderful, well done.

@@bmos02 Ah. Good points.
@@bmos02 Wow..
I,ve only watched a third of this video and I,m bloody impressed....If I had the money to invest....this is where I would be putting a big stack of greenbacks. Oh and I have lived my whole adult life as a Dieselhead. Says it all. this is the future.
the R1S is smart - money invested in all the right places!
absolutely love it.
When I heard that this vehicle is or will be made in my hometown Chicago IL that was the moment when I was sold! Take my money now!
It's made in Normal, IL which is about a 2 hour drive from Chicago.
In the US the front trunk is referred to as the "Frunk", guess in the UK it is the "Froot"! :)
Only if you drive a Porsche or Beetle. The Boot is out back.
Great to see more electric cars come on market #sdadan
R a good idea 8elfqerffu
A beautiful and well thought out offering well done Rivian. I wish you great success in the future.
By far the first electric vehicle, I am actually excited about. I would love to test the RT1!
This is the electric vehicle us Texans have been waiting for!
Can't wait to load up feed for my rescued farm animals, pull my trailer full of solar panels, and go off-roading through the countryside looking for edible mushrooms! hahahaha for real tho...
GM and Ford had the Electric Ranger, how come you did not buy one ?

Phil the Fixer Ideal for harvesting truffels 😂
Lmao love this comment
Hopefully this company takes off as they should so the price goes down a bit more. Not saying it isn't worth what it's currently listed as, but definitely out of my price range lol. Fantastic design and functionality. Looks pretty slick too.
I'm so glad to be alive in this era to see electric and solar cars take off. What a blessing each day to learn and see what the future is bringing us. I just wish with all this technology human lives improved and wars stopped. I wish medicine was as advanced as cars and smartphones where it actually solves problems than band-aid the problems.
Fantastic I want one in the UK now to replace my Range Rover and BMW i3
2.1m wide is a bit broad for anything to do with cities in Europe though :P
I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THESE ON THE ROAD, AND I HAVE LITTLE INTEREST IN TRUCKS/SUV'S.
DAMN no lie this is a badass looking truck.
Seriously?
Speechless indeed !
Finally some proper thinking went out to the market !
Looking forward to buy one.
Also another thing I see in these electric cars is a lot more storage and I love it.
Definitely I would buy it.
