  • G-1000 is Fjällräven’s cornerstone material. A hardwearing and densely woven fabric of 65% polyester and 35% cotton, it is used in everything from backpacks to trousers. But it really reaches its full potential when treated with Greenland Wax. Though most G-1000 garments come pre-waxed, after a few washes and regular use, the wax will need topping up. With Greenland Wax you can increase a garment’s water and wind resistance, as well as its durability..
In his video about applying Greenland Wax outdoors, Wax Expert Don Gladstone outlines these qualities to Fjällräven Bushcraft Ambassador Ray Mears. As Don says, on one hand, “…it’s really basic…,”. On the other, it is an effective, “intelligent” and customisable system.

can you boil some water and use the steam to melt the wax? so no wax on bottle, clothes don't get burnt and enjoy coffee at the same time?

    •  3 года назад

Hi, We have not tried that, and the key is to melt the wax at a temperature of around 55C. There are no advantage with steam on the fabric and wax so to speak.

I wanted to wax my jacket, but then I couldn’t get past what would happen if I tried to wash it? I prefer to launder in cold water, so I would think the wax would stay put but then how would I remove dirt, sweat etc from garment?

    •  3 года назад +1

Hello, Each machine wash will affect the wax a bit, and after about 3-5 washes the wax is gone.

I run a hiking company in the UK and am always looking for better gear and over the years I have learnt the slow way that high quality is important. i just dont get this water repellent definitely not water proof thing. These garments look excellent and I want to buy them but when it rains am I going to get wet? doesnt it rain over there or something?

    • @alantd44
      @alantd44 3 года назад +3

In my experience of using these jackets in various conditions, the wax increases water repellency but you never really achieve water proof. With too much wax you end up making the jacket too stiff and you lose breathability. Even then you’re not truly waterproof because you can never effectively seal the seams.
The jackets are perfect in sub zero temps when you get snow and light rain - and also in cold, windy conditions. Also good in damp or humid conditions because they breathe so well. In very wet (UK) winters, you want to have a waterproof shell with you - either a jacket or a poncho.
I love the Fjallraven gear and the G1000 jackets are perfect for woodland and camping but for more technical mountain walking I use layers and their eco shell (their equivalent to Gore-tex).

When it's pouring down you can just throw a poncho over the jacket no need for the Jacket to be waterproof.

Hi, The fabrics G-1000 original, G-1000 HD, G-1000 Silent and G-1000 Lite. They are all cotton/polyester blend.

Remarkable only in Fjallraven marketing. I own 2 FJ G-1000 jackets and 2 zipped mid layers. Non of them can compete with technical fabrics, waxed or not. I've heavily waxed one jacket and water ingress occurred within 35 mins of moderate UK rain. If I'm up on the moors for a day with changeable weather my Arcteryx Atom LT and a Gore-Tex shell are the ones I take

    •  3 года назад +1

Hi! The G-1000 is not waterproof, it is water repellent and the water repellency can be adjusted with greenland wax. If you want a waterproof shell layer, take a look at our eco-shell garments. They have a PFC free impregnation that are good for the environment, are made from recycled polyester and are 100% climate compensated. Have a nice day / Lucas

@ I didn't say the G1000 is waterproof. It's mildly water resistant at best even with a heavy coating of wax.

@@PhilHaddon ok great, but as they just said, they have completely waterproof “technical” fabrics as well. So…
