Never thought about getting good bamboo this way. after watching this the first time made a run to the store and sure enough there were two big boxes full and on sale for less than two dollars each. they probably thought I was nuts sorting through the filled boxes but came up with some great pieces. thanks for all the time you spend teaching people like me

I've been doing the same thing . However somewhere the other day driving around my area I seen a patch of bamboo right on the road with a lot of dead ones . I drove around this morning hoping to remember where I seen it so I could stop and ask if I could have some . Being old I couldn't remember where I seen it ?

Hey, thanks for watching! These days you cannot see the thumbs downs on videos. About two years ago RUclips removed that feature. I believe they thought it was for morale. Also, it never has mattered if someone gives a thumbs up or thumbs down since RUclips's algorithm only considers it an interaction! 😅 Glad that you like my health and safety talks! I have to be sure to include more of those in the future!

Don't understand why someone would thumbs down your videos. I got a basic understanding of the theory and manufacture of NAF's from your videos and have through years have made many and Japanese Shinobue, Sakuhachi, Irish, and Arabic flutes. Great fun and learning experience that started with your videos. There is no shortage of mean and egotistical people in the world, but that gives the whole balance, I would think. I myself am very grateful for your information and instruction. Have a great New Year Brother.

My wife is the musician and singer in the family. She has a fantastic voice, Me? I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, and I can't play anything. But I love watching talented, skilled people make things, whether it's a Native American flute, a Japanese katana (something I know considerably more about), or a little hand carved gnome to hang on a Christmas tree.
I love watching you work, and it's nice to hear what you're doing as you do it. Too many supposed "how-to" videos are made without any talking, and darned if I can tell what they're doing, or why they're doing it.

Great sounding flute, i discovered at my Menards garden center they had some bigger sized bamboo stakes this summer. I have now made 3 flutes with the bamboo and all sound very good, I have been following your videos now for a couple of years and thank you so much for sharing your knowledge .High five to ya.....PS i have made many thin wall pvc flutes and two branch flutes all from following your videos.

For busting out bamboo nodes, I use a piece of 1/2 inch steel electrical conduit that I sharpen on the edges, and it works well to cut the nodes away from the inner wall.

Great work! In my first flute experiment (pre-You Tube) I used the same tools you did. Decent result, but not the best. My bamboo section had no nodes. Had to use a flat, smooth stick glued inside to form the track. My sound hole was a simple crescent(beveled). Of course, I had to seal the mouth end, except for the track opening. Flutes sound good in big warehouses, or even caves.

Great! And I agree about the acoustics of big open spaces. It just "feels" like it is where music should be played.

I have been watching your videos. I love your teaching style. I finally attempted making my own. The first was a squealing disaster but I got it to make a sound! A few more later I made the the track first. The sound was deep and lovely. Now I'm afraid to put the fingerings in. Ill lay it aside until lve had more practice. Thank you again for sharing your passion the native American flute.

Thank you for your kind words! I'm so glad to hear that your food making experience is turning out great! One way to determine where the fingerings need to be placed would be to check some of the schematics for my videos for our book. Likewise, if you can send me a picture or diameter and length measurements of your flute, I could send you back the hole placements. 🙂👍

Nicely made flute. I have made a few flutes and they turned out pretty fair. I'm working on a few old damaged acoustic guitars and getting them back into playable condition again at the moment during our winter months. Like most guitars they have neck angle issues, so the necks have to be carefully removed and reset back on properly to the right angles. I plan on making a few more flutes in the spring in different keys and a give a few as gifts to other people (some young kids wanting to learn music). Being on a pension, I pick-up few old skids and make flutes from them out of the wood people no-longer want and normally burn for heat in the winter months. They do make good durable flutes that will last and be enjoyed long after I am gone. Thanks for the video.

I have purchased 4 flutes in different keys and all made of wood. I’ve been thinking of making one out of clay since I am a potter and have easy access to an extruder to make the tube. I just need to know how to make the holes and track. This video helps. I love the sound of the flute you made. Very good instructional video.
