river rat what you can do is take a piece Of tape and tape the tube to a small piece of paper or something thicker like a cut flash card. You can also fold the tape itself so that it gives you two stabilizing “wings” and just stick that onto your tubes. I promise they won’t roll after that
@@maheshzarkar3214 It's when your ant's test tube keeps rolling around. Stop trying to use hashtags if you don't know how to use them? #BoomerSpotted is an example on how to use it.
This is truly genius for many reasons. 1. The flat end helps to prevent rolling which makes this product better than the average test tube for the use case of starting an ant colony. 2. This idea applies to any kind of semi transparent plastic tubing which can be found almost anywhere for free. This opens up the hobby to literally anyone. 3. You are recycling harmful waste and using it to propagate life. 4. These containers can be used for so much more! Storing and organizing seeds is a good example. Words simply cannot express how much I like this idea. Thank you!
Thank you! Just caught my first queen and I wasn't sure where to buy a test tube. This will definitely work and seems to be a much cheaper alternative.
Some issues with this: 1_These straws aren't clear so you won't have a good vision on the queens 2_You could accidentaly cause major damage to the ants because the straws are plastic and can bend and potentially kill the ants
Kartal Yıldırım well said! I actually made this video in a rural area where access to scientific equipment is not as easy as where I usually live(but hey, more queens!), so this really was a spur of the moment video. I do believe this is a good, strong contender to the test tube: you can see 95% of the details on the queens, and these straws are not as thin and flexible as you’d think. Of course, if I found a transparent straw I would switch it out, but both methods have cons: Test tubes roll around too much, straws don’t. Test tubes can also potentially crack open if it falls, releasing your ants. I’ve had this happen to me while I was driving with a queen I just found. Would straws fit the accepted norm for ant outworld ports and other formicarium openings? I’m not sure, but after working in a lab for a year I’ve found that even test tubes of the same diameter, if manufactured by different companies, vary slightly. Once again, thank you so much for watching this video and taking the time to comment and point out the flaws in this method!
I haven't had this problem before, but I cannot say for sure if it will "never" happen. Queen ants usually like small enclosures when they first start out so put the straws in a sealed dark box/secondary containment without disturbances and you should be fine even if they somehow manage to get out. I have mine in a styrofoam cooler.
you solved the rolling test tube syndrome. now my queens will no longer get accidently knocked over on their backs. they will find peace, lol.

what i'm going to do, instead, is buy draw string 'pencil pouches' and put each tube in one of them. that should solve the problem.
What's rolling test tube syndrome?
What's #rollingtesttubesyndrome?

Now I have someone to blame when I go into the store and get a slushy and there’s no straws.

You can also use the small jägermeister bottles that they usually sell in 6-pack

iyi dedin gral
He is making the video in his bath room 😂😂😂😂😂 who noticed
Me hahaha
thank you
Test tubes that are wider than 20 mm are over priced so this helped a lot
My place who only have black boba straws: Aight imma head out
As long as you dont mind not seeing the ants hahaha itll work
How do u refill the sugar water???
How much are you sweating
Can i Use the tube like thing on the like bubbles toy?
Late reply but you could, just make sure to wash it out really well because if soap is in there it could (and probably would) kill a queen
Also you can do this with clear pvc for wider test tube
Really good video! Big Brain Time!
Can you use small straws?
depends on the size of it, and the size of the queen. Give her enough room to move and turn.
@@AvatarAquatics Thanks
Also very useful thx
i have queston?
is ants can't make a hole in that straw?
thanks... nive vid i suscribe

the round shape makes it so they cannot grab any part to bite through.
Um..i have a black straw can i use that?
Yes, but you won't be able to see it and you'll have to make sure to really keep them in the dark so they don't overheat
@@sammy_sand_utubeyt6901 oh ok ty for the info
