I managed to catch a queen on accident. I woke up this morning and saw this huge winged ant crawling in my room. Now, I usually kill insects that get into my room, but your videos gave me a soft spot for ants, so I caught her and I just came back home from releasing her into the wild. She broke her wings off while she was in my container... so I guess future ant generations will tell the story of the gentle giant who led their mother to the promised land? XD
I'm camping now and when I set the tent up I found a dead queen ant in the tent. It had lost most of its legs and its head was missing... that could have been my first ever queen...
I caught a tetramorium queen and the colony is doing great! The only bad thing is that it is way too expensive to get ac stuff, so i just have to improvise.
I recommend you learn basic 2D AutoCAD and design your own formicariums. They can still be a bit expensive, but not so much. I have a video where I show the first one I made, and I'll soon upload videos of the newer and more efficient model. Good luck!
My neighbor’s house had a lot of queen ants and I didn’t know what they were. The queen ants were on the bed, my IPAD. and a lot more lol Since I’ve been watching your vids I managed to keep one ^^
I managed to catch my self a funnel ant queen in my backyard when I was playing with my dogs and it's a good thing I always keep a small container with me during nuptial flight seasons in Australia she is now in a test tube setup and is on her way to making a colony hopefully
O MY I NEVER KNEW THAT WHEN THEY FLY THATS HOW IT WORKS. When I was younger me and my friends used to call it ant day whenever that happened every year or so in my town, we used to watch as all the ants flew everywhere

In temperate regions (for example, southern Illinois in the US), you can find newly mated carpenter ant queen ants hiding in rotting/moist pieces of wood at least six in diameter with holes/hollow caverns. They tend to start their colonies in the soft wood in forests, as it is is easy to burrow through and provides quick and easy shelter while their initial brood develop. Once they get more workers, they tend to expand into the surrounding soil, but you can catch really young colonies (2-6 workers) in wood. Smash the wood, and try to carefully shepherd the fleeing ants/queen into a container.
Once I caught an GIANT ant, but 8 dunno what it was, but it was strong man, I tried to pick it up and it bit me, so I trapped it, then I hid it in my room, so a month later the container I pit it in was a sea full of ants, I was terrified so I just gave the jar to my friend who loved ants, and he put it in his fish tank, but then, the giant ant died, and my friend gave them food, but after the queen died, ants started planning an escape, since my friend did not know what to do, so he just let them plan, a week later they all escaped, and they were everywhere. But now till this day, I catch ants and give them away for care.

I've been a fan for many years! I've decided to try and keep ants myself. I've just ordered some glass tubes and an ant nest from your site and impatiently waiting your order :) I caught two carpenter ant relates few weeks ago, in Kapuskasing Ontario- Canada and kept them in seperate small Tupperware containers until I get the tubes. One of my ants is apparently a female that did breed because she has at least 8 eggs I've seen so far. I'm so proud of my first small achievement.
Its was nuptial flight yesterday in my garden and i caught 9queens this mornig i woke up an i took a look to the queens and 2of the 9 already laid there eggs

Liam Van Bouwel well if you are a new ant keeper wouldn't you like to see your ants ? also that slow colony growth rate sounds nice because you can get more items for their set up and learn more about caring for the colony before it gets large and takes more ability to manage :)
Liam Van Bouwel Well, to be honest my knowledge of ants is limited, but I would assume because they're larger and easier to see, you can feed them more easily and check to see what they're up to easier. Also, they're probably better hunters because of their larger size. Lastly, you can see them easier and enjoy the sight of your colony at work instead of having to search for them throughout their habitat. Just my idea, but you may want to double-check me on that.
I love how you give all the bad reputation bugs a chance and you explain them in such detail that others can learn to love them as you do, I love your work

RedSquare Squad I think what you said is a load of BS. He says you should only keep native ants because 1. Keeping non-native ants may damage the ecosystem if they escape and 2. There's a good chance your non-native ants will die because your place doesn't have the right conditions for them.
As a kid I thought flying ants were a freak occurrence that just happened for no reason every now and then. Remembering back I do remember it did tend to happen around the same time as thunderstorms. It's great to finally understand what the heck is actually happening with flying ants. I had no idea it was so common amongst ant species.
Simproved These ideas are wonderful. If the AC Family doesn't use these, I will be SO mad. Jaw(a) the Hutt is amazing. Simproved, you are an angel on Earth.
Caught 1 Queen 2 weeks ago (still had their wings on), caught second Queen (also with her wings on) kept them for a week to see if they would break their wings off, but no luck. So I let them go, the same day I caught 3 males lol! And no Queens!!! Went to my local Park in New Zealand (South Island, Blenheim) and caught a Queen. And she laid eggs (x20). So I ordered a small nest and will wait until the new workers are born and then transfer them out to their new nest. Can't wait!
Hi Grant! Congratulations! You won this week's AC Question of the Week! Please email me at mikey@antscanada.com for instructions on claiming your prize. Thank you for playing!
A few weeks ago I saw a bunch of ants laying on the sidewalk. At first I thought it was an ant war but none of them were moving. So I took a stick and dragged it through them (cause that's just what you do) and they all started moving. What was going on?
Hello, Im a visitor from the year 2021! Like taking a peak into the finds of an ancient civilization i am awestruck how the ant room once were as this was before my time as a follower. In my own time I've just been making basic plans of making my own farm of carpenter ants(or at least some related species) here in Sweden and I'm reading up on some ancient knowledge about queens and were to find them. I don't want to disturb the spacetime continuum so im just dropping by to say hi! Keep going strong young AntsCanada!
Sometimes there’s so many ant queen on my school, I think the ant flew to the balconies in the 2nd floor. And just to mention me and my other friend like to catch them a lot of students are scared of the queen ants, I hope they don’t pee their pants 🤣🤣
I saw a black ant queen and I don’t know why but I thought the queen was hungry so I gave her some pieces of the candy I was eating and the worker ants came and have some with the queen, days later I saw them again in the same spot so I rushed to the kitchen and got a cap of a small container and put some honey flavored candy pieces on it and fed them and some times later I decided to get a clear and clean big container and put some dirt, sand, leaves and some small rocks and put the queen and the worker ants into it and it been like 2 years that I kept them and I’ve bonded well with the queen(sorry for my bad English;) )

Aaron McBride I use a small hose to connect my ants to their different homes and it is about $2 per foot

I found 2 queen ants but i don’t know what species they are lol
Caught 1 Queen 2 weeks ago (still had their wings on), caught second Queen (also with her wings on) kept them for a week to see if they would break their wings off, but no luck.
So I let them go, the same day I caught 3 males lol! And no Queens!!!
Went to my local Park in New Zealand (South Island, Blenheim) and caught a Queen.
And she laid eggs (x20). So I ordered a small nest and will wait until the new workers are born and then transfer them out to their new nest.
Can't wait!
My queen camponutus laid eggs and still has her wings.
I ordered a nest and tube also. How long did you wait for them?
I just saw a ant queen
Back then i thought they were just old ants for some reason
DaIdiot I saw multiple queens crawling on a tree and I thought they were just big ants
Chase Gordon I thought that the ants are just naturally fat
Chase Gordon that's majors
saw 10 new queen ants when I was in 1st grade, and accidentally killed them all thinking they would bite me all over
carpenter ants they are great starter ants to keep cuz they are large so you can see them good they are also very active and they dont sting.
Name for the new queen: "Jawgina II" (The Second) 🐜
I just caught a Prenolepis Imparis, not new to the hobby but Prenolepis Imparis is my favorite species so I’m hoping she is successful.

A few weeks ago I saw a bunch of ants laying on the sidewalk. At first I thought it was an ant war but none of them were moving. So I took a stick and dragged it through them (cause that's just what you do) and they all started moving. What was going on?
Luca Grinyer maybe they were napping in the sun
gonna need to make a new flag for that trap jaw queen and possible new colony

I'm thinking maybe their jaw?

Kanan oh oke well good luck

Hello, Im a visitor from the year 2021! Like taking a peak into the finds of an ancient civilization i am awestruck how the ant room once were as this was before my time as a follower. In my own time I've just been making basic plans of making my own farm of carpenter ants(or at least some related species) here in Sweden and I'm reading up on some ancient knowledge about queens and were to find them. I don't want to disturb the spacetime continuum so im just dropping by to say hi! Keep going strong young AntsCanada!
Damn, the jawbreakers must been breaking their jaw during the war.
Notchy04 GT Thats why it's a bad name... It brings bad luck... "Jawbreakers".. That means self harm..
Adriel Sandji, they must be called Jawfighters or maybe cooler. Rest in peace.

Sometimes there’s so many ant queen on my school, I think the ant flew to the balconies in the 2nd floor.
And just to mention me and my other friend like to catch them a lot of students are scared of the queen ants, I hope they don’t pee their pants 🤣🤣
Carpenter ants are very good for starters because they are large and easy to watch. Also they don't sting!
They're dangerous arent they?
No? they are pretty tame, so long as you don't jostle their nest, even so they prefer to hide in the nest rather than actively defend it
croja07 lyyyyyyeeeeeaaaaa
I think what I caught was one about a month ago, was huge so I knew it was a carpenter ant queen

Ye, i hate it when im searching for queen ants and i just see people continuosly glancing at me with a face like"wtf is he doing, wierdo"
I agree with you.
You should really do videos more often instead of once a week
