Hey Matt,
Glad you're still liking the books! Thanks for this--I got a good laugh watching this one this morning.
CR
Thanks Christopher! I'll catch up eventually.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews No rush on my account. I'll be working on 7 most of the rest of the year. Probably finish Septemberish.
I want these books to have ALL of the attention. More online discussions. Cons. Fan art. All of it. The books are awesome. His best novella is Dregs, which goes right after Ashes.
These books are incredibly thought provoking.
Imagine if Sun Eater got made into a series of films in the style and scope of Denis Villeneuve's Dune movies. We can only hope that happens some day.
Let’s effing gooooo. Right with you on this one being a grim masterpiece of a middle book. The excursion into the Lothrian empire was chilling stuff, and then what happened after was just so brutal.
I’ve never been more excited for a book than I am for Disquiet Gods!
Ruocchio is the best too! No one is nicer to their fans!!! Get him on the channel! Also, he does recaps of his books on his channel!!!! ALL AUTHORS NEED TO DO THIS!!! I always forget what happens in past books haha
I believe when Ruocchio was forced to split the books Kingdoms of Death didn't need much changing but Ashes of Man was too short and he had to add more to make it long enough. It suffered more from the split so keep that in mind when you get to it or you might be disappointed.
I know you are saying it is perfect upon itself but book 5 really provides so much CATHARSIS! I don't like grimdark and I needed Ashes of Man to be able to enjoy Kingdoms of Death.
I'm starting Demon in White right now, the first two books in the series are already top books of the year for me
Sun Eater is quickly rising in my priority list. Unfortunately I think it'll have to wait until I finish Wheel of Time, but we'll see what I decide to do
I struggled with Howling Dark, but your enthusiasm cannot be denied. I will continue!!
Ok fine! Matt dropped the F-bomb. I'll put my other books on hold and start this series pronto!
30 pages left in book two and wow! What a ride its already been
Every book in this series is incredible, but Kingdoms of Death is the book that makes me both excited to re-read the entire series one day while also making me want to never read it again.
I'll be restarting it after I'm finished Dandelion Dynasty (1 book left) and Tawny Man (1 and a half books left)
Disquiet Gods came out on Tuesday. He is currently writing Shadows Upon Time.
im so glad i started reading this series just wrapping up demon in white and the subsequent novella. the audiobooks are unbelievably well performed as well if thats peoples jam
I’ve got to finish Malazan and Wheel of Time before 😢
Kingdoms of Death was an emotional rollercoaster. I couldn’t read anything else for a month afterwords. So good!
By the way, don’t wait to read Ashes of Man. Just do it. Disquiet Gods is already out. I’m just waiting until the audiobook releases on April 30th.
Yup, it just feels like the second half of Kingdoms of Death.
I’m waiting for the 30th too. The audiobooks are so good!
is the story complete or there will be more
Early Hadrian could never have wiped out a billion lives. By the end of Kingdoms and Ashes, you can really see how it could happen. He’s a fascinating character. Not always likeable. Not a MarySue. He fucks up so many times, but he’s still so badass.
I absolutely love these books! I’m halfway through Disquiet Gods as I write this and am already crying inside because I will have to wait until next year probably for the final installment. I have been telling myself that this is a Dune tier series and feel like you do in that it’s destined for greatness. Christopher Ruocchio’s legacy as a great writer is all but assured imho and he is young so I hope he has more great stories to tell as time goes on. Everyone do yourselves a favor and enjoy these books. For a few reasons I don’t get as many opportunities to actually open a book these days. I’ve turned heavily towards audiobooks over the past decade so I hope I still retain my bookworm status from the first forty odd nose in my book years of my life. The Sun Eater series is narrated by Samuel Roukin and his performance excellently done as far as I’m concerned.
I’m new to your channel and am very much enjoying it.
Finally! Now read Ashes of Man, Dregs of Empire, and Disquiet Gods lmao.
I have read up to the third book. I had already been told that the fourth and fifth were grimdark in its purest state. So I will have to prepare myself psychologically before reading them ;-) Take care.
Listening to this series thanks to you. GOod shout. At the bit in book 3 or 4 where he and princess celine are courting? Making me roll my eyes on the though of how long this bit willl go on for, but im looking forward going into the next stage / books thanks to these reviews.
I'm currently reading book 3 and it's a blast, love it. So well conceived. In every book like you feel that you've reached a climax at 25% and you wonder then what the 75% have coming for you.
Dang it. Time to bump it back up the TBR.
Just started the series. Bought the first two books So glad I did. Love everything about it so far! Thanks Matt for an awesome review!!
Matt this is the next book I’m reading. This review makes me so happy.
I agree. These books are so amazing and written beautifully. It's one of my all time favorites too. And I'd love to see it as an HBO series.
Awesome review man! This is my favorite series of all time!
Also super interesting how you think this is better than book 3, I’m in that majority that thinks book three is the best so far, but based on what I know about your tastes, yeah that doesn’t surprise me.
Book 6 just came out and I’m reading it now! I’m so excited to see what happens, and it’s the second last one. Book 7 should come out next year hopefully!
I knew you'd love this one!!!
Im going to start this series hopefully this month. I've been putting it off for a couple of years now.
Hey! Thats Salamandastron in the background! LOVE the Redwall series. Got me into fantasy in 5th grade!
Same for me!
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews Been going through last years top 100 list and saw you had Pearls of Lutra up there! Just like you, the Way of Kings got me to fall back into love with fantasy books. I just introduced my 10 year old to Redwall and it’s really cool watching him discover his love for fantasy too!
So I had heard going in how brutal this book was (all true), and because I also knew it was Part 1 of a book that had been split, I also assumed that we as readers would get no closure - just straight PAIN the whole time. So imagine my surprise and delight during the final 50-100 pages. My god what a freaking masterpiece.
this intro just decided my tbr. Im reading suneater right after i finish first law
TBR too long, want to read, but so many books. Have to wait, must wait. Wallet empty. Maybe just a couple more? Help!
The sixth book which is the latest one is definitely my favorite and I read day 1 in January from the earc so no recency bias, just to hype you up lol. Also I think once you read Ashes of man (5th book) you'll see why people say they see how they consider these books as 1, but Kingdoms of death definitely can stand alone by itself perfectly fine. Also as a side note I thought the title kingdoms of death was way to over the top before I read it and now I think it's too underwhelming from what we experience lol.
This is my next book to read after The Shadow of the Gods. This made me even more excited to read it
So that what it was. I am just starting the first book ❤❤❤
It is the new Dune for me.
Finished book 2 a few weeks ago and took a bit of a break with some other books but can't wait to keep going. I did actually like Book 2 a little less than book 1, there was a stretch there in the middle that got a little too slow and weird for me.
Got done with disquiet gods day before. Its the best in the series. I'll hear debates but it's the best. Elevated suneater over dune for me. Now i feel comfortable in my suneater over BOTNS take (despite what christopher might think).
I read Kindgdoms of Death and Ashes of Man back to back, and really enjoyed it. I think Kingdoms of Death is the better book, but I have given every Sun Eater novel 5+ stars. This series is just amazing.
I just finished Howling Dark. Currently reading Queen Amid Ashes. 🎉
Finished it the other week. 10/10 book that I don't know if I'll ever read again. Just incredible but so brutal!
THANK YOU! I haven’t read book 6 but this one was easily my favorite and I don’t care for grimdark itself but still I love the horrible scenes like Berserk, this book, and Eleventh cycle are what come to mind.
It looks like he destroyed Goddodin in the end which is certainly a human military outpost.
This one killed my so hard I emailed Ruocchio to tell him. Loll
Favorite series of all time, will definitely turn into a classic!
Disquiet Gods has already released.
YASSSSSSS. I love it when you love a great book.
I wish i could buy this, but they refuse to make more hardcovers for some reason
The greatest frustration of my life, man.
I will add though that i think some readers may struggle to get through Empire of Silence....which is a real shame, because it gets noteably better after that (not that Empire of silence is bad at al, but im sure you get what i mean)
Hes considered a hero and a villain not just because he annihilated the Cielcin, but because in extinguishing the sun, he snuffed out billions of human lives in an instant.
It wasnt the Cielcin homeworld, it was a human world that apparently all the Cielcin had gathered to destroy. So all of them were in one place but in a human star system and he murdered billions of his own people.
It's on my list... I promise I'll get to it... soon 🥰📖📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚
So, if I understood correctly, you're saying I should go and buy this book, right? 🤪
I just read this last month as well! It was intense
Just finished this. It is the best in the series by far so far
What series would you recommend between this one and the dandelion dynasty?
I prefer to not read books from unfinished series. However, this book series may need to break that preference.
The author only has one book left, and very consistently pushes them out.
Book 6 already out and christopher will probably finish book 7 by September so probably release early next year.
Disquiet Gods just came out 2 days ago my man.
I know, I'm late to the party!
Incredible book
Matt, since you love Grimdark you gotta prioritise Second Apocalypse!
Next month I am reading book 2!
Omg I NEED TO read this series!!! But there’s toooo many books to read!!! 😭
Great series...easily top 3 series of all time for me I think....certainly top 5 but i haven't really thought about it I guess.
Yeah, I couldn’t wait for you to read this one. I listen to the audiobooks because that guy is the voice of those characters now for me.
So the audiobooks are good? I want to listen to them on Audible but I was afraid they would be too complicated for audio.
@@akellerhouse83 They are pretty great. Since the books are written mostly in first person, that narrator’s voice is in my brain as Hadrian now. The first book is good and they just get better and better with each one. As much as I did like the first book, it just doesn’t hold a candle to the ones that come later. Such a great story.
I'm listening. I haven't found it too difficult to follow at all.
They are good.
Happy for you all that you have a series to be so excited about but tbh I found the series as a whole to be fairly mid and this my least favorite among them, but it did set up the best emotional moments and character development so far in ashes of man
I cam to the series from Red Rising, looking for similar stuff/future space sci fi etc
Big fan of it so far, i like the political elements it delves in to,... has a bit of a GoT feel to it, you can certainly feel some different influences that Ruocchio has taken onboard
Its a lot more 'raw' than Red Rising but by this point I don't think i can really compare them to each other as they are now both in my top series of all time, each in their own way.
I figured it was this book in the short
After seeing what you do to dust jackets. I can see you like PAIN
Waiting for the series to complete. Then read in one go
Probably smart. I'm trying to remember exactly what has happened at the end of ashes of man. Plus, there are MANY small moments in this series that enhance the overall story.
I KNEW IT!
I read the first one and liked it but got very bored for a large portion of it. Enough that I am not convinced I should continue with the series. Has anyone felt this and persevered anyway? Was it worth it?
Yes it is worth it. First book was ok but then it just got better and better.
It is so fucking awesome.
Chris and his wife are also very active. Both have hit my back on messages (Just saw that he also hit you up lmao)
Long time ago, u were not showing interest, when i told u that sci-fi novels are also good.
Not reading sun eater because you convinced me to read malazan 😂
where to start with this author? 😅 any recs?
Another great vid, matt I wanted to ask you what your thoughts on the old Dragonlance books are? They get TONS of hate and are ridiculed into the ground but for me, I remember being gifted the og trilogy back in the 2000s, they were actually my first foray into fantasy when everyone was reading eragon. Currently rebought the box set and a few chapters into dragons of autumn twilight and I don't know, I'm just enthralled. I never played DND once in my life, but all the available lore around Dragonlance plus the characters, really draws me in
How do you describe the characters in Dragon-lance? Are they interesting? Is the book long or short? Pacing? I would love to read some more Classic fantasy series and Dragonlance is on my TBR.
@neerajcherukuri4052 they're pretty short for fantasy. But they had to go back and make books that happen in between the main 3 books to explain things when characters disappear and come back different. The pacing is kind of uneven, and some characters just become unimportant. I think its better when you read it a younger age, cause my friends who read it as their first fantasy love it so much. But I read it much older and i think there's better fantasy. And people love the wizard but he's just a huge edgelord. (I base my opinion on the first trilogy, I DNFed the twins trilogy cause it was all my least favorite characters)
@@IcePrinceYuki1 oh! What would you recommend for good Classic fantasy then?
@@neerajcherukuri4052 if you want Dnd style classic fantasy, the drzzt books are fun. Good action. Crystal shard is the weakest book imo because it's the lord of the rings copy adventure, but the prequels are great and everything after is good. Old fantasy I like are the Elric books, he's kind of like the proto drzzt. The dragon bone chair series by tad Williams is like the bridge between classic and modern fantasy. The black company is an interesting twist on fantasy as they're mercenaries working for the big bads.
@@neerajcherukuri4052 short novel probably like 300 pgs or so, great characters, its like a classic lineup, you've got your knights, warriors, rangers, rogues plus I'd say one of the most unique mage characters you'll find in fantasy. Reading is very fluid and the books do a good job keeping track and making use of each character. Overall with the loads of available lore to draw from I would definitely recommend Dragonlance if you're into "classic band of heroes fantasy"
Had we heard Matt swear before?👀
I MEANT TO BLEEP THAT OUT!!!
Not sure I have ever seen someone so enthusiastic for such a bleak book 😂. I love the series, but books 4 and 5 were a little too full of suffering for my liking. I hope it balances out some of the darker themes in Disquiet Gods.
On the plus side I recently read Dregs of Empire (novela between books 5 & 6 from another POV and this was great)
Check out slowly read and Jimmy from a fantasy nuttwork. The grimdark love overfloweth
Any dune ripoff claims go out the window with book two and to compare it to name of the wind is criminal.
