- The version with the piano solo in the beginning.
Lyrics:
On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
Contemplating a crime
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolour in the rain
Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the year of the cat.
She doesn't give you time for questions
As she locks up your arm in hers
And you follow 'till your sense of which direction
Completely disappears
By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls
There's a hidden door she leads you to
These days, she says, I feel my life
Just like a river running through
The year of the cat
She looks at you so cooly
And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea
She comes in incense and patchouli
So you take her, to find what's waiting inside
The year of the cat.
Well morning comes and you're still with her
And the bus and the tourists are gone
And you've thrown away the choice and lost your ticket
So you have to stay on
But the drum-beat strains of the night remain
In the rhythm of the new-born day
You know sometime you're bound to leave her
BUt for now you're going to stay
In the year of the cat.
2023 - still playing it- still loving it - timeless masterpiece
This is probably my favorite '70's tune. You get two piano solos, two guitar solos, two sax solos, great vocal harmonies, great lyrics, great rhythym guitar, great drumming, the bassist is right on! What more could you ask for...
I wish I had been there.
His talent is like no other, I'd recognize an Al Stewart song immediately even if I've never heard it before.
This is the song of my nostalgia, oh the memories.
I saw Al Stewart at the Beck Theatre Hayes, in an acoustic set must be around 20 years ago.
Love his music now as much as I did then.
I was a kid when they played this on the "top 40".
Back when the music industry had actual .. musicians . .
This country has become a sewer.
+Dajuro Shouting is the new singing in this sewer.
+Dajuro The skill generated by these musicians is incredible!
+Dajuro More like year of the Rat now
+Dajuro ignint
+Dajuro that is why i moved out, just couldn't take all the garbage being shoved down my throat
I heard this song on the radio today. I forgot about its existence somehow and how much I loved this song. Thank god I had parents that raised me with good music
I usually like studio versions as a rule. When I came across this I was blown away. The piano playing is amazing !!!
The guitar & sax work ain't to shabby either!
***** Do you play an instrument? I sing I need someone who plays guitar to back me up on From the Beginning E.L.Palmer !!!
I tried to get the guitar once with minor achievement. Can't really help there. It's kool that you play.I'm a happy singer at best.
great pick or choice Cheryl
I just want to say that this is one of the very few songs that never ever sounds old. It still sounds fresh after all these years. Just a timeless classic!
I agree❤! It's a beautiful wonderful song!
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like a watercolor in the rain.
Don't bother asking for explanations she'll just tell you that she came. Just magnificent and that sax something else. This is the best version I’ve heard.
Notice how lush the instrumentation of this song is: first the piano solo, then all the guitars, then the tenor sax and the tinkling keyboard. And yet the vocals are never lost; you can discern every word. Magic...
I heard this song for the first time in the winter of 1977 when I was 14. I absolutely loved it and the reason why was what you mentioned - lush instrumentation. The lyrics were also engaging and painted detailed pictures in my mind. A classic song for the ages.
One of the songs that will never die, classic forever
I miss all of my beautiful cats very much; Angel, Mr. Friskey, Felix, Clarabel, Tigger, Angelico, Pandora, Penelope, Lil Pearls, Putsy, Benny-Marie, TinyAngel, Clarence, etc. . .they are beautiful cat angels resting in Heaven and all the other beautiful cats whom I have been a caretaker and foster parent to.
Mysterious, classy, beautiful song... one of my favorites. Fantastic live version. Thanks for sharing!
The most underrated POET songwriter of my generation.
I would advise any young person interested in the second world war to listen to "Roads to Moscow" by this artist. Moving lyrics, great music and a history lesson all in one.
Jim Peluso
I am 21 and I have listened to "Roads to Moscow" countless times.
Great lyrics, great song writing, a great history lesson and a perfect combination of instruments (especially the guitar). A jewel for everyone who enjoys good music and every history fan.
One young person followed your advice XD. (a little joke)
+Jim Peluso
TheSporehacker Looked at your page and you have great taste in music.
Thanks :)
I am 20 years old, but I listen to Al Stewart and other great musicians from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's
My cat insisted i play this for him before bed tonight.
great song...perhaps Al Stewart's best tune!!!
thanks James-Joie'
just listened to it with my grandson. like when i listened with his mother i loved those time
I heard Al perform this at the Royal Albert Hall last night. And, before doing so, he announced that the girlfriend who inspired this song ... was in the audience! Then when the now-extended saxophone solo began towards the end, the saxophonist, who was using a radio mike, was suddenly spotlighted in the middle of the audience, (I think) serenading her! It was a lovely romantic gesture.
+M Watney That is genius.
I think what makes the song cool is that they each get a chance to "speak" through a little snippet of soloing, and the guitar players, the sax player, the pianist and the key player each have a different technique, yet it all blends beautifully.
Don’t forget about the amazing voice delivering those lyrics
Some Songs are in another dimension of greatness! to live on eternally this is one of them.
Reading the lyrics thinking that's poetry set to music. You really don't see that very often.
Bob Dylan is terrible!
@ Greg - You don't think Bob Dylan is a great lyricist? Tangled Up In Blue creates atmosphere just like this song does. Though tonight I think this song does it a bit better.
Beeguiling Perhaps I misspoke about Bob Dylon. He obviously is talented as he was very successful. I just personally never liked his music. I thought he just talked over the music with no rhythum.
always LOVED this song...never knew all of the lyrics until now...thank you ~
Another classic song from 70's confirming why it's my favorite decade for music
excellent music
grateful !!!!!
Loved this when I was young, and it's still absolutely brilliant. So many perfectly written and played parts.
My youth returns..., yes, one of the best song of our youth!
Such a beautiful song.
Pretty much the most perfect song, it's got a little bit of everything........
Brings back beautiful memories of when my wife and I first started going out together.
oh dear god yes this song forever
To the 459 CUNTS who thumbed down- hip-hop craps awaits you.
+hejustleft, Maybe they left to get off on that bieber dweeb!
+hejustleft love the soft rock of the seventies, screw the idiots that dont enjoy the good music
+hejustleft 1970s Al Stewart -from Glasgow pens an international hit.
I'd forgotten how much I loved this song way back when...it's only with luck I rediscovered it last night watching "Running with Scissors", a brilliantly bizarre movie by Ryan Murphy. Ever since, this song has been playing in my head, occasionally escaping into public via a whistle, a hum, or a flat out sing along!
Some things never get old. This song is a good example of that
I was a kid as well and bought the single when I was 12. Kids of today are not exposed to the quality or variety of music on top 40 radio.
forever 1977 stuck in a Rochester, NY dorm room with the worst winter in ages...and this song playing.
Got to have the piano intro!
As I'm watching this video, I'm mesmerized by those blessed, busy hands. So many talented musicians pulling together to bring this masterpiece off. It's a rare thing now a days to be able to spend the time to develop a deep plot lyrically and flesh out the musical arrangement of this caliber for modern radio audiences. Many listeners have much shorter attention spans than they used to. I guess it's not much different than what's happened in the film industry. Anyway,. brilliant work on a timeless classic, many thanks and much respect to Al Stewart and Company, I grew up in the Seventies listening to their music and now my kids do too..
This is positively legendary, they put it on the radio here in Mexico at least a couple of times a day and deservedly so!
457 people have no ears.
Vincent Van Gough cut his own ear off? Then eventually took his own life? Because of the voices in his Head? Even at the end he tells him that he always knew he was to Beautiful for this Life Here...? Who the Fuck would ever say something like that? Right ✅️
Jajajaja yees right? You right funny guy like. T😅😅My in You ie. Good fellas i😂😂 yoi
I did not had ears for it
@@JesusErnestoRamos-dr1yt True Story 👍 🙌
The way this song moves from powerfull piano to guitar to sax is awesome. The instrumentals are so great. There's nothing even close today.
This song-- lyrically and melodically-- is a work of pop genius. Love it!

I think i'll stroll through RUclips like Peter Lorre contemplating a crime after listening to this incredible song
always loved this song, even more now as an adult. it instills great memories, truly a classic
1st time I've seen this version - a beautiful song that takes me back to Korea when I was stationed at Camp Humphreys 1977-1978 and times there. This song is kind of the background music of memories of being there. Really had to be there in 1977 at that country world that turned back time.
Hello Ladies.
"year of the cat" is very special to me cuz when I had my first baby, it would always come on the radio in the wee hours in the early morning as I was feeding her. Beautiful memories... :)
don't kill me anyone. Year of the cat is one of the reasons why England and Scotland should remain united. Beautiful song written by a Scotsman speaking English with a beautiful Scottish accent. Masterpiece ps Englishman living abroad
Met Al Stewart today on a BA flight. A gentleman.. Talked music for a few minutes. Never even knew who he was....I was in the midst of folk and rock coolness
70s music--great for story telling--look at each element on this song--piano, saxophone, keyboard and great guitar work. And so enjoyable to listen that at 6:22 hardly a lengthy song.
Love this song...always have! : )
Me too ; beautiful song !
Great song , I love the beginning with piano..
1st thanks ElaineMarley ,for post , Al cut the mustard , martom deliaz an off to sleep ,
I love this song so much! I want this song played at every major life event in my life.
The Album of the Year in 1976 "Year of the Cat"
Great composition, timeless music from a now distant era.
An absolutely lovely song. He had such a gorgeous voice. Miss those days..years of great rock and roll!
My wife is been through the year of the cat since we got married ... is that fair ? :)
obviously, your sense of direction has completely disappeared. So, what exactly is there waiting in the year of the cat? Not more patchouili I hope. Blech!!!
Great song! Has a melancolic melody... great musicians
A soft keyboard solo followed by a melodic acoustic guitar solo followed by a perfect electric guitar solo and ends with a terrific sax solo simply awesome ,just the great Al stewart made it possible...!
Great musicianship just across the board . Man what happened to music like this.
Catchy melody great song structure and soft vocals. All leading up to a heavy Sax solo back down to the melody and that echoing keyboard riff simply magic.
A saudade do passado nutre o medo do futuro.
Bom dia, Marcio Ripper !
Ronaldo Nobre isso me soa tão hoje. Eu gostava dessa música e cantava com 7 anos. Harmonia linda. Letra (q eu n sabia n epoca) maravilhosa, instrumentos afiados e paixão.
Abs Ronaldo meu brother.
Cool song. Love the instrumentals too...
WOW AGAIN AWESOME
william l higdon yep it's up there with the best of the best.....
Jacqui Crawford Hey Jacqui, Hope you are enjoying being home. Its been hell here the last few days, seems like everything breaks down at once. Maybe when I get caught up, we can get back to having fun,I miss that, and the music....
W. L. Higdon He will....yes enjoying being reunited with family friends and my gorgeous pooch...not liking the cooler climate tho. Sure buddy....we can get back to some fun stuff on hangouts and I'm always posting music...take care and keep calm....
Jacqui Crawford Yes thanks, and your my girl from the future.....BYE..
A perfect mix, tone, tempo, musicality.
I wanna dance to this song for no reason.
Seriously. What a great song. Seriously. Stone cold classic.
Such memories of this. Went to a party and was first to arrive, the hostess said "put on some Music." I picked this album out of their collection, had never heard it before. Hooked instantly.
The pianist is fantastic!!!
Love this Song. Complex, intelligent music and not the bull... mainstream.
Wonderful song ! The Sax and Piano pieces are beyond beautiful !!
I loved his accent as he sang. It made him seem illegit yet significant. I felt as if the song had some indellible meaning I couldn't understand, yet as a boy I didn't quite know why I loved this tune so much.
Me too!!!
I really like this song and this music genre in general, and I'm like, 94 years old. Isn't that amazing...that I appreciate such a tune at such an age as I am? I mean, shouldn't I be listening still to big brass and swing along the likes of Glenn Miller and crew? As soon as I graduate from the cool seventies era of music, I'll move on to big hair eighties rock ballads, then rap, then Nuevo hip-hop, etc. and so on until I've caught up with all the happening people of the world. But I won't stop there! I'll just keep on cruising past that lot and go full circle back into the bible days when easy listening involved tambourines and yelping. And I'll repeat this cycle in perpetuity, time infinite, in an everlasting manner.
Temazo... Excelente música de los 70tas
i absolutely love this track and the whole album year of the cat, reminds me of pepe and lots of lovely friends in vilaseca tarragona spain. fab memories
The best song of the 70's...for me!
Great pianist.
One of the best song of all time.
Al Stewart and his Band, simply genial!
Hiii Peter!!! The beginning of this vid is you!! You were so Beautiful; this is how I remember you and how you live on in my memory...I hope your life has been Good to you and I thank you for being in my Life, if only for such a short time. I will always cherish my times and memories with you.....Yes, I did Love you....H
Hand made music, with real talent. Probably some of the last we will see of it for a while.
I love this song, especially the opening piano. Lovely.
I heard this song on Hello Ladies a few months ago and haven't stopped playing it since. Timeless stuff.
On "The Old Grey Whistle Test" too.. iconic show.
What an angelic voice. Great memories come flooding to my mind hearing this song.
I'm 58, and have been a rocker my whole life. And of any guitar solo I've ever heard, the solo in Year of the Cat is my all-time favorite:)
La SuperCancion de los 70!!!! Inolvidable!!!!! Una obra de arte!!!!!
Ooh how I liked this song, I bought the LP when it was released in the 70's!
Me and my cat enjoy listening to this song together!
Let's not forget the guy on saxophone either. After playing the same instrument for 40+ years, I still envy his tone quality. He is amazing.
This has been a favorite of mine forever. Love his voice and the band is perfect. ♥
The bass sounds amazing... and that intro, just awesome.
my parents loved it, I had to listen to it on long car rides, so I either love it for what it is, or I love it because they made me. Either way: holy shit: that intro is awesome. So is the rest of the song.
Great production!! It's very sensual and yummy! Incense and patchouli!!
Al, you're awesome! Your two Opuses (sic) Year of the Cat, and Time Passages will stand the test of time...will be here and played on some sort of media.... when all humans have left the Earth...tee hee hee.. Thanks for posting!
An excellent live performance of one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs of all time.
Back in the 1970's The ads for Mercury automobiles used this song especially for the Cougar model.
All-time great song. I think Al Stewart is one of the best songwriters of his generation. Alas however, the definitive (recorded) version of this song was made so by the unique guitar sound of Tim Renwick. There's a reason no live versions smoke after he left: it's simple, Tim Renwick wasn't there! Even he himself says that possibly his proudest achievement is his playing (electric and acoustic) on the studio version. Al is also no slouch as a guitarist, but even he can't mimic that magic.
Al Stewart is the BEST!!!
Wow. From a time when performers were true artists. What a masterpiece! Oh, and this was live, by the way!
real music !! timeless classic.
