On paper the 400 has more useful features over the 200.
And here are their 2 main differences:
Number one which is the most important one so far, it’s the fact that the 400 has a sound card, which means that it doesn’t rely on any device to output its sound. You can simply plug in some RCA cables to the unit and attach those cables to a speaker and get the party going.
The 200 on the other hand does not have a sound card, which means that the audio that it outputs, will only come from a computer or phone depending where you attach the unit to. Which unfortunately means, that the audio cannot get as loud and maybe as clear as the 400’s, unless you use a sound card with your computer which will cost you additionally.
Number 2, the DDJ-400 has buttons and knobs for selecting songs, inputting pad modes, and for using effects. This is extremely useful because this removes the need to go to your computer and activate and select any of those options.
The 200 though, does not have any of those buttons and features. It only has a mixer section, jog wheel section and cue pad section and that is extremely limiting, because you have to rely on touching and using your computer or phone to do simply DJ things like select songs. And that for me is the 200’s worst trait.
But it’s not all bad for the DDJ-200, which brings us to the next section.
The advantage of the DDj-200 over the 400 are 3 things. It’s smaller, it’s cheaper, and most importantly, it works with WeDJ and other mobile DJ apps. So this means you can DJ with songs from different audio streaming apps like Spotify.
And another thing I like about the DDJ-200, is that it works just as good as the 400 when you plug it to a computer with Rekordbox DJ. I felt no difference at all between the 2 controllers when it came to scratching, mixing, using effects, etc. The functionality with rekordbox and the controllers build quality are exactly the same with its bigger brother
So how bout the DDJ-400. How is it as a beginner DJ controller?
Well for me it’s almost perfect. Everything works and functions like they should, and it can definitely go toe to toe with its bigger brothers like the DDJ-800 even though it’s smaller, lighter and is made with cheaper materials.
If you’re a beginner DJ, the DDJ-400 is a controller that can last you a long time, because of all of its basic features!
The only thing I find lacking with the unit, is its absence of better audio output options like an XLR output. But that is pretty much it!

I think the difference is simple. The 200 is the type of controller you can take hiking to a mountain top so you can film yourself mixing and scratching. The 400 is one that you can potentially take to a gig.
Two DJ legends 🔥🔥🎧💽
DJ Carlo Atendido for sure! Great video by the way. Much needed for someone to compare these two.
Yup! Have taken the 400 to an actual gig.
@@djcarlo can the 400 use wedj as well?
@@abrahamsiu IDK about wedj, but for sure it can use djay, which is the one with spotify integration.
I picked up the ddj 400 a couple of months ago to learn Rekordbox. Great for following along to your tutorial videos. Loved it!
Yet another informative video. Bought a ddj400 after your last comparison video with 4 controllers. Absolutely in love with it. All thanks to you!
I’ve a DDJ400, it runs very well, and mostly if you’re a beginner that’s a total deal to understand basics using an advanced device. Price accordingly way more reasonable for a startup machine. Would say best for the value. DDJ200’s might be good for get togethers and school functions. If you just wanna listen to your favorite tracks and play with em. Rekordbox is kinda messy for beginners but once you get your hands on it no turning back.
You're my DJ instructor yay 😁 I bought the DDJ 200 today since I'm a beginner (learned vinyl so long ago) with DDJs and so far so good. Thanks for the tutorials you're awesome! 🦄
Welcome aboard! That is awesome! Wish you all the best!
Well said my friend...very honest comparison.I myself use the ddj 400 because of your tips and tutorials and because it is really good the way I expected it to be..Thanks and more power to your channel.
I just started out mixing on my DDJ 200 and pairing it with a touchscreen capable laptop and rekordbox definitely allows it go toe to toe with the 400, as the features missing from the controller deck are replaced with buttons that are only a foot away on my screen. The only downside I can see is the missing soundcard and RCA outputs, but with an extra USB sound card ($20) the problem of the mono split cable is easily solved. Obviously, if you are planning to take this to a club or another professional setting, you might run into some issues setting up your audio with their PA, but in my opinion the quality and adaptability of your skills as a DJ far outweigh the need for expensive hardware.
this tutorial was perfect for me. I am a beginner for DJing, I've just came to this world just today. I was just wandering if it is the 200 or the 400 would be the best choice for me. Because I am an high schooler, my budget is pretty tight. After watching this video, I have made my mind up to buy the DDJ400. Thank you very much Carlo. even though I've just known ur channel, I am sure I will enjoy ur videos.
i'm not sure if u would see this comment, but if you do, please note that there is one big fan of you at Korea.
WOW! This is great! Thanks for sharing your experience here! I am happy you got what you wanted! Wish you all the best in your DJ career! Stay awesome!
@@djcarlo p.
How are you doing today? Have you done any gig?
@@dj.avian.madrid Tried to, but couldn't since my school work is going too buzy. But! I am looking forward to starting again!
DDJ 200 is more than perfect as a backup controller and an absolute option in terms of portability. For beginner DJs too it can work wonders to learn the basics before investing into an expensive gear. I personally use the DDJ SX for my gigs and carry the 200 for house parties or for DJing on the go. It’s fun. 🥳
Thank you for sharing your experience! And glad you're doing well too! Cheers!
Would ddj 200 be enough for a minor techno party? I’m a newbie in djing and planning to hold techno parties for my friends and their friends, but I’m not sure of the 200 would be enough
do you use an external sound card? If so, which one?
@@aliaksandrilyushenka5597how does the 200 work for your techno parties with your friends, buddy? Is it good enough finally?
@@arthurconstant8147 sorry, buddy, I didn't take the 200. Took the Ergo LE, and I have to say it's more than enough to start! Helped me to begin my DJ journey
Thanks, you helped me easily make up my mind, I go for the 400, cheers
This was a great video I will share this with few up coming DJ's who want to be a DJ and really want to get into DJing asap. Keep up the work Funk Up Salute
Thanks so much. I DJed for 20 years using vinyl and refused to use new age digital dj equipment.
But I've finally decided to stop being biased and am planning on buying a DDJ 400 because I've seen them in action and they're incredible for their price! Great video 🤘
Oh wow! thats pretty cool, man! glad my video has helped you decide on which device to get! You'll surely love it!
how do you like it?
@@JSmooove It's great! Worth every penny. The best thing is how easy they are to carry around. I've done a bunch of house parties now and it takes about 1 minute to set the thing up and BOOM... the place is bouncing!
I've also done 2 club gigs playing Drum n Bass.
Ah mate I'm the same . Literally gave up my carer just to the digital age . However im interested in vinyl mode which im not sure if this controller has.
@@matthewjbellamy1 It sure does have Vinyl Mode.
However, they recently discontinued the DDJ 400 for the new Pioneer-FLX 4 which is not only still a budget controller but uses both Rekordbox as well as Serato.
It has some cool new functions and seems to be a decent step-up from the older DJ 400.
I would highly recommend you check it out buddy 👍🏻
I dj on the ddj1000 but if i didnt i would buy the 400 it has so many grown up features and that club layout
Bought the DJJ 400. Amazing so far. Thanks for the tips!
Great to hear!
I’m using DDJ 400 and in love with it❤️ huge love to u DJ Carlo Atendido❤️✌🏼
Great stuff! Glad you’re doing fine with your gear! And thank you!
I started djing witch a hercules universal dj and quickly updated to the ddj rb which is the previous version of the 400 and it was perfect. Now I have a DDJ 1000 and I don't need anything more than this unit. It's just perfect.
Nice Video
Thank you so much 😀 Woot woot!
I'd definitely go with the 400, the 200 is just a little to, well.... not enough.
I started with the ddj 400,used it for like 8 months, truly amazing! So easy to learn, but it had enough to play on stage at a electro festival . now I got an ddj sr2 as next step to go pro
My main music is afro house, and I play afrobeat as well
Great to hear! Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts!
Would love to hear a mix, dirk! Also, how did you come to feel limited on the 400?
I love afrohouse.. 🔥
Thanks for your helpful vids Kuya Carlo! I'll be following to learn more :) If it helps anyone else in Europe, I went ahead and ordered the DDJ 200. While I was all in on the DDJ 400 there has been no stock since maybe March/April? And the current delay is pushed into August (for my country at least). However, the 200 looks super fun and solid for absolute beginners like me to learn the basics. But both are such good prices that I would consider still saving and getting the 400 whenever it reappears!
I just started dj. Its really fun! This video was reeaalyy helpful for me. The DDJ 200 for me is personally better cus im only a teenager
Great to hear! Wish you all the best!
As a bone stock as a Rookie I picked up the DDJ200 (for $119.99 at GC) and I’m extremely happy with it!!!! I’m a huge Pioneer fan now!!! My next Controller will be a Pioneer as well!!!
Good for you! Wish you all the best with your equipment!
What i love about my DDJ-RR is that i can preselect 6 FX (3 per deck) its a great feature about it. The only thing i would say is not so good about it is the looping section kinda looks complicated and the in out buttons are tiny but it works.
Thank you for the vid and tips. I will buy controller for my gigs
I love this channel, all of my questions in mind being answered without asking anything. I'll start djing because you inspired me. If only i have money to afford these kinda stuffs. Since its quarantine, my family is struggling financially. But i hope i can buy one of these in the near future. From PH
Awwww! Thank youuu! You kind words inspire me to do better and to make more videos! I wish you all the best in your new found passion! Cheers!
@@djcarlo The way your telling its function are very clear to me, I'll look forward for your new videos! And may i ask 1 question? Since i only have the knowledge by watching your videos, what DJ controllers (cheap price) will you recommend for me?
I love my DDJ 400, nothing like using a laptop and seeing all your personal music library....
Also great as a backup
Does it work with serato software?
Even though I have absolutely nothing with house music, the tips on this channel are useful.
As of for which controller, looking at the 200, it's kinda lacking in features, not having load buttons is kind of weird. I would've originally gotten the 400 but bc it wasn't available anymore I got a DDJ-RB. Also a nice controller.
Woot! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!
I just bought a DDJ-SB3. Recommended for those who wanted to practice scratching. For those people who wanted to DJing, regardless what software? Go for the DDJ-400!
I m buy 400 yesterday
Osm love it ❤️❤️❤️❤️
All credit 2 u

Can you do a comparison of the ddj-rb and ddj-400 pleaseee. I can't decide what should i buy. Love your vidss man you're an inspiration to all beginner djs
both nice units, I have the 200 and for around the house it is epic.
Bought the DDJ 400 last month and love them
Please where do you buy it from
Hi Carlo, thanks for this. Considering on learning how to DJ while on quarantine.
What do you think about the DDJ WeGo4
I have bought DDJ-400 before seeing this video. It's great, though I would like to see Pioneer making something like DDJ-400, but bigger and more expensive, but with focus on actually useful stuff. So no LCDs in the jog wheels, but instead 4 channel mixer and at least 2 outputs (preferably at least one balanced) and at least one analog input. Maybe separate FX controls would be nice too... And slightly bigger pads (it could be slightly bigger overall)... Though I guess it will never happen because it would significally cut demand for all those more expensive gears like DDJ-1000 SRT.
I highly recommend best beginner dj controller Pioneer ddj sb 3 , is a controller that has almost everything you need!
I love your videos btw! I just wanted to say I'm just starting to DJ, I got a Numark ns7III for a ridiculously cheap price and as a starter unit it's a little daunting but damn do I love it!
@@djcarlo In reality, I'm not very good with it yet (your drop mix tutorial was very helpful) I've really got to work on mixing and transitions and fundementals, but while I'm doing that I'm also practicing creative stuff with loops and such. I just recorded my first little mix, it's dubstep so you may not be into it but I'll link it just in case.

Long waited for this comparison from you DJ Carlo Atendido
You’re actually able to mix Spotify songs now with the DDJ-400, pioneer just announced that the DDJ-400 is now fully compatible with Djay Pro for iOS, Mac and PC which has Spotify integration.
Nice
EddyGraphic Thank you for this info
Is this still a thing? Or are there anyother controllers that use spotify other than the 200?
@CHARLES 13X ah right, thanks mate
CHARLES 13X Yes, unfortunately they’re dropping Spotify support on July 1st 😢
I have a full tutntable DVS set which is my main baby, but my ddj400 back up is awesome. I used it at 4 gigs this year (gig was low paying) and it is great, used it with the xp1. also the ddj400 can be used with djay, on ios
i've been going back and forth between the ddj 200 and the ddj 400 , finally i decided im going to buy the 400 thanks alot carlo for the info
Cool stuff! Wish you all the best on your controller and mixing!
@@djcarlo hey carlo any other recommendations for 2020 beginner dj gear ?
I bought the DDJ-400 and don't regret it at all. It provides a lot of features offered by its bigger sibling controllers and offers a great path as you grow your skills and career. If you're only interested in basic DJ functions at a small house party with friends or up in the mountains (with cell coverage to access Spotify) then the 200 would be a good choice.
can you not play the ddj 400 on a mountain?
@@CryptikzChannel Of course you can use the DDJ 400 on a mountain. You can probably use anything on a mountain as long as you have the required electrical power and speakers, etc. Do you have the space to carry the bigger 400 along with all of the other mountain climbing gear?
Hey Carlo! Love yours videos!
Could you please do a review for the Pioneer DDJ RR? It's one of the few controllers which has 3 individual FX controls on it and I was curious to see what you have to say about it!
Definitely ddj-400!
It’s much more complete. greetings from Argentina!!
I'm going to get a ddj200 because its more affordable and portable the main reason I'm getting one in the first place is so I can DJ with my buddy. so only needing to take my phone a charger and the controller itself is a must for me.
I recently just got the ddj 200 but next Christmas I will hope fully be better and get the 400
I am late to the party (although I will be 50 this year) ...I have always been interested in mixing as well as writing music (I used to DJ on Techniques SL1200's many many years back - I was no expert and could not afford to own my own) ... I have just purchased the DDJ200 to play around with and also to use with my occasional music writing as to add interesting transitions in what I create - for me, the DDJ200 is another MIDI device to get creative with - and to have a bit of fun when I have the occasional party or BBQ... thankyou for your vids m8 :D
For sure buddy! And as they say, age is but a number. If you're enjoying the 200, then you're not late to the party! Have fun with it at your house parties! :D
The 400, it's a great beginner controller, but can let you advance with its addition features 👍
DDJ-400 All the way. The latest rekordbox update adds streaming on the platform for mixing.
I think the 400 is superb for what it is. I’ve owned a 2000nxs set up but sold it a couple years ago. Bought a 400 to mess about at home with and I absolutely love it. I wouldn’t recommend anything else for a beginner or even a pro DJ who wants something to use at home. Ticks almost every box for me.
Right on! Glad you found your love!
DJ Carlo Atendido I’m still likely to upgrade again soon, probably to the RX2 but the 400 is so good for the beginner Dj, especially with Beatport Link now as well. Pioneer definitely know what they’re doing!
I bought a sale DDJ RR recently, for a P25,000 pesos, or $480 US. I really liked the sequencer feature which I realize later that its not hard to do on my laptop.
Great videos Carlos 👍👍👍
Love your videos
I love the ddj 400 ... After a long time
Nice video man
Definitely will go with the DDJ-400 because it covers everything I need.
That's true! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
DDJ 400. I own one and love it
very good and informative video as always. my mom wants me to be a doctor but I want to be a dj i think i will buy the 400 when i get the money
I got the ddj wego a few years ago. Great to get the basics down: beatmatching, mixing etc. so yeah, for the basix stuff it doesn’t matter which controller you take. When you are sure you like it then you can get a more expensive and extensive controller.
The last week I bought the ddj 200 and I saw your videos and now I want to buy a ddj 400 and I want to back ddj 200 i'm a amateur dj, only i'm thinking bad ideas. I don't know what to do! Your are a great dj I admire you. Grettings from México.
Trust your instincts Victor! You'll know what's best for your DJing.
I just got mine ddj400,im more than happy!
Glad to know! Let us know how it goes! Thank you so much for watching! 😀
@@djcarlo Sure I will! :)
so my first beginner controller was the DDJ-SB and I loved it, I upgraded to a DDJ-SB-3 last year and I feel like its the perfect combination of professional features and easy to grasp beginner layout and I prefer Serato DJ software over Rekordbox just personally. Now I may be switching to Rekordbox anyway because I'm currently looking at buying an XDJ-XZ although I do think Serato supports it
Yes Serato supports it! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
@@djcarlo I ended up getting the Denon Prime 4 and tbh I've never been happier with a purchase
I’m sold on the 400 but it’s gonna take weeks before I can get one because all the stores being closed and it’s on back order i can’t wait to get my hands on one ☝🏽
Yay! Coool! I am happy for you! Cheers!
Amazing video! Please make Numark Partymix VS Hercules 200. Two most cheap controllers
So, I WAS going to get the DDJ-400, but someone bought me a Numark NV II. Based upon your review here, I would absolutely spend the extra 100 dollars and get the DDJ-400 instead of the DDJ-200. After this review, I am not all that convinced that the cheap Numark Mixtrack controllers would not be a better solution than the DDJ-200. I know Pioneer is your sponsor and you do your best to support their products, but seeing how much additional you can/will possibly spend after the initial purchase of the DDJ-200, I would not recommend it to a beginner who is even half way serious.
Great video as always!
I just got my second booking and have not even played my first! To new people just getting going.... Take time to talk to the bar or club owners. Be honest and be humble. You will get the gigs. And for the love of Pete, when playing bars and clubs, frequently remind the patrons to tip the people serving them. This will go a LONG way in building a positive relationship with you and that particular bar or club. Don't be annoying about it, but be sure and do it at least once per set, if you can.
@@djcarlo Thanks, bud. You are, in my opinion, they best guy out doing tutorials. I appreciate you not doing like one of the other big name DJs on RUclips and spending half of your tutorial videos doing gig logs and self promotion. Thank you for doing those kinds of videos without calling them lessons or tutorials and keeping tutorial videos just what the name implies.
That being said, I am very interested in any gig vlogs you might post. :)
Awesome, So the DDJ400 can be basically ran through a smartphone? Wow!! Your the man, definitely mad cool of you to bring these differences up, thank you for that...So we talking about Android, or Apple, or possibly both? Thanx man... Respex, Big Upz, & Mad Love to DJ Carlo Atendido..... 🔥💯👍💪🙏🎶🌎
Please do a T-Shirt giveaway Carlo!!
I badly love your Rekordbox T-Shirt!!
i think the ddj-400 is when you want to learn to dj, i have bought it and in 1 month i've learned to beatmatch, dropmix and sometimes throwing some effects to switch songs (this looks so easy but it's harder then it looks :P)
Can you make 1 video (if you also get request from other people) about how you orginize you're music and where you get your stuff from, cause i cannot imagine you just rip of youtube XD
Thank you , the video is really helpful . I am a beginner and i would have definitely go with the DDJ-400 . But my budget isn’t helping so I’m buying the DDJ-200
Hey, bud! That's not bad! It's not about the gear, but it's how you use it!
DDJ SB3 for the slightly bigger jogwheels.
i have the ddj 200 as a beginner and i love it because i can focus on scratching and crossfading which i am not as great at.
Do you know why my songs play at the same time? The only thing I can control is the start/ cue and one sound effect button,, when I start the 2nd track I can hear it playing at the same time
I feel like if you are starting off the 400 is the way to go. The 200 just feels so limiting. The 400 just makes sense. You can always decide to not use certain features until you're comfortable.
Woot! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Valid points by the way! Cheers!
Am a beginner thanks DJ Carlo for the info think I'll get the 200
No problem 👍 Let us know how it goes for you!
Hello Dj Carlo! What's the name of the adapter that I can use to attach my 400 to my iPhone? I heard that the DDJ 400 is now compatible with djay and I'm itching to try it out. Cheers!
I bought a DDJ 400 after referring from your videos. Now I started taking gigs using my DDJ 400. So I thk for that purpose DDJ 400 is good. DDJ 200 is just the baby and we know how much a baby can do

Hello
I'd like to know which one you recommend?
I've never had a controller and I'm new to this
Which one do you think I'd learn best with?
Which one do you think would be best to start with?
thanks man
I love my DDJ-400. Not only because I own it :D , but it also works perfectly with djay Pro also (Spotify!), but it also works perfectly with the djay app on my iPhone.
Also, I am routing the RCA output from it through a Rolls HE (I have some noise issues with my USB sockets on the MBP), and that also converts the audio to balanced signal.
Ok I got the DDJ-200 NOW it's time to learn through your courses😁
Great stuff! Keep practicing and creating good music!
Has an rca out?
Thank you will go for. 400 too cause l just wanna do it at home not for clubbing 🙌🏾🙌🏾
Woot! Woot! Good luck with your purchase and career!
Hey Carlo Atendido,
I have one big question...
Can I use Spotify with Rekordbox DJ or do I need to buy songs for mixing at home?
Happy Christmas!
sick video
the mixer i have is ddj sx3 my first begginer dj controler was numark party mix
Nice! Let us know how it goes for you!
I will go with Ddj 400
We cant practice beatmatch by headphone with ddj200
3 years later and this is still relevant. Great vid! With guidance and stuff going on with my life, I'm picking up DJ'ing. This week in June, 2022, I literally looked at the 200 and 400 and I've chosen the 400 for scope and scalability.
What I will be doing will be more than casual. For the slightly extra money... why not?! Caveat: I don't own a DJ controller at all right now.
Exactly my man! Glad you got the 400! Love that controller. Still is one of the best beginner controllers to come out in this decade!
Good luck on your DJ journey my friend!
I would recommend the impulse 300 because it's very simillar to the DDJ-400, it's cheaper (like 160$) and it have options for begginers like beatmatch guide or track assistant
That's a good recommendation! I love the 500 more, but the 300 is a good entry level from Hercules!
Thanks man 🎶😎🎶
For sure! Hope you found the review useful
Hi DJ Carlo, first Congratulations on your Great Work on the Channel.
Please, I need your personal opinion, to learn to be a DJ, which one would you advise me between these two controllers.
I am between the
DDJ-400 & the Inpulse 300, I would greatly appreciate your response.
Greetings and continue your successes.
I have a question, can you connect the two together? DDJ 200 and DDJ 400? mix using both! it's possible? thanks so much, I like your videos!
Beginning here, I haven't brought any equipment yet but are there any controllers that's compatible with an iPad or you have to have a laptop?
On the DDJ 200, Can you play songs via Bluetooth from your music library on your iPhone? (which you sync from your iTunes) so not Apple Music Subscription or do you have to use subscription services such as Spotify and Apple Music?
I agree but 200 is smaller and can be used with music streaming apps. Music streaming is a huge thing coz I wouldn’t want to collect music on physical hard drives. So I think I would go for 200 instead. More mobile and future proof in my opinion
I’m not sure which controller to buy
The DDJ 400 or the Hercules inpulse 300
I’m a beginner who knows nothing about DJing
Can ya plz help me decide
Ddj 400 is my favorite
I am a person that always wants to hangout with my friends and do mixing with them, thats is why i preferred the DDJ-200 because of its portability. I can easily set it up with my phone using the rekordbox mobile app ❤ i can bring it and mix and manage my playlist and hot cues anywhere i want just using my Phone, Bluetooth speakers and Powerbank as a backup power source 🎧 😜
Very true! It's extremely handy overall!
I like the Behringer CMD Studio 2A DJ MIDI-controller
DJ Carlo Atendido Thanks
If you are just doing the real basics to get the job done ( beat matching with fade ins, fade outs) is the DDJ 200 a good choice?
Carlos..with new recorbox update have the same funtions ñike ddj 200 to get the music from beatport
big thank you for this......
Its been a week i have started to watch your channel and its helping me a alot.... Don't call me sir You are my Sir ❤😊
