Working on cars before the days of RUclips and the Internet when you had to know somebody that knew how to do it to show you you couldn’t just go on the Internet and look up what tools you needed and how to do it , all you had was Hanes manuals and bigger hammers
Yep Worked in an alignment shop. Position the ball joint squarely in the hole of the control arm. Place a jack under the ball joint with some , or somewhat pressure on the jack. Beat (that word may be offensive to some but common sense people will know how hard to strike) the control arm down until the ball joint is seated. Maybe adding more jack pressure throughout the seating process.
A jack or jack stand under the control arm will stop the control arm from deflecting your hammer strikes, and you'll be able to knock out the ball joint even when rusted in there.
The only problem with this C clamp method, the bottom where the part is being pressed needs to be supported on the outter rim so as not to bind up the ball joint. It looks like everything worked out here but a socket or cup on the bottom is necessary
@@tyler1671no they aren't. I've never seen one that is strong enough to take that much force. You can see the underside of this one is the usual rounded one. Only a cap ggat is pressed on.
Took a pickaxe head to break my balljoint stud free. Took a drill and drilled holes in the balljoint. This was to hopefully relieve some pressure and maybe it did I dont know. Let the steering knuckle bathe in oil for a day. Then used flathead screwdrivers as wedges and increased sizes going around. Bored out my pinch bolt hole and put a bolt with lock nut and washer. @@masterpah1 thanks for poiting it out. I made sure they were sitting snug. Great info! Grab yourself a pair of snap ring pliers. They have sets that come with internal & external heads. Got mine pretty cheap at Advanced Auto but maybe Amazon has them even cheaper.
I did the same thing because I didn't have a ball joint press kit!! What I DID have was a C clamp and a gate post cap😂😂 it was a major headache because it was 14⁰ outside. Great job getting the job done but you should've got the tool from the auto parts store when you got the part. Gotta look professional if your working on someone else's car.
Wish they were all that easy. It’s easy on THAT arm… look how paper thin it is. It won’t always happen that simple on a beefier arm… wherein the ball joint is pocketed into something much more substantial... ie RSX, Regal, etc. Been here.. done this. They don’t always pop out like that.
This has been doctored to make it look easy. It will push in the underside of that ball joint and deform it. Should also have something like a socket which contacts only the outer edge, to push it into place. You can see the bottom if it and that is only light metal. A cap that is pressed on. Also. The ball joint has already been loosened if you look closely at the start so this makes it look easy to smash it out. Not realistic.
