  • Join me on my journey as I tackle a persistent rodent problem on my property. In this video, I share my frustrations and the damage these rats and mice have caused. Initially, I tried using traditional traps, which were effective against the mice but not the rats. Determined to find a solution, I eventually turn to an air gun, which will hopefully prove to be more effective against the larger rats.
Additionally, I acquire some feral cats to help control the rodent population. I'll discuss the benefits and challenges of using feral cats for pest control and share tips for anyone facing a similar problem. Follow along as I share my DIY solutions and the lessons I've learned in my quest to make my property rodent-free.

Best way to get rid of rats is lizards, then to get rid of the lizards you get snakes. Then to get of snakes there is small gorillas, then when winter rolls aeound the gorillaz freeze to death.

    Hi Aiden.
Great video. I like the thought put in to creating the cat shed.
About the rats though. Many carry a bacteria in their kidneys called Leptospira.
They also like leaving scent trails wherever they go so are pretty much laying urine trails all over the place. If the urine is contaminated and you come into contact with it, the Leptospira can enter your body via a cut, or if you rub your eyes with an infected finger it can enter through your conjunctiva. You can also contaminate food that you are about to eat if you have contaminated hands. Even doing some of the sawing you were doing to create the cat she, the rats you have would be all over that wood trailing urine as they go.
I think you need to think about PPE and keep safe. Most folks suffer the symptoms of Leptospirosis, severe flu like, and thats the end of it. Leptospirosis though can have a second phase, Weil's Disease, where your kidneys and liver fail and you can bleed from the lungs. Mortality rate is high.
There are antibiotics that can treat the earlier symptoms and that's the end of it.
    Please take care Aiden.
    Regards, George.

Years ago I got told the bin bags were moving in the back garden, "year right!" went out to investigate in my PJ's flip flops and dressing gown. "Sh## the bin bags are moving", opened the shed, removed the garden fork and proceeded to lift each bag up with the business end of the forkand move it to one side. A few bags later out hops a rat, I take a few quick jabs at it with the fork, striking sparks off a brick wall and with a squeal it runs off down the passage between houses. I went to work the next morning but got a phone call on the Nokia brick due to a dead rat in the middle of the garden. It must of crawled back later an keeled over. "They don't like it up em!!"

Spray WD 40 , and white lithum grease in a spray can, and spray the underside of the van everywhere. The white lithium grease spray is waterproof and will stick to the wire harness etc and help prevent mice chewing on wires. The WD 40 seeps into the cracks and will wash off , but it’s great at seeping into cracks, the white lithium grease, will need a respray at least once a year. Mice will find a way inside your car , they are determined to find a dry home , the WD 40 spray on the underside works well at preventing that

I also had to make 4 cutsom loft hatches to seal off some loft space as well as other places where I still had access to inside the floor etc. Still have work to do but should be done end of next weekend ready for the air test on Monday. You'll probably already know this but when you do start you insulation make sure you don't neglect the small gaps between the end rafters and block work. It's not something that I particularly thought about when I insualted my roof and now it's all plastered etc i'm struggling to get to them to squeeze some insulation in. Don't want to gun spray foam in as don't want it to expand and touch the breather membrane. I think I should be ok as is(Hopefully). I used Actis Hybris insualtion with the Hcontrol layer on top and it does a really good job of keeping the heat in, It's just a question of too much air gettinn or not. Time will tell on that one.

First vid of yours I’ve seen, probably come up as I’ve been a pro pestie for over a decade now. Well done on steering away from poisons.
I’m not a fan of cats due to the devastation they cause to our ecosystems, however I certainly think they have a place in rural settings, providing 24hr pest control, and if their presence means rodenticides aren’t used, I’m all for it. I don’t know if those farm kittens will grow into farm cats with the luxury you’ve provided them! It’s better than my house!
The rat catcher is a great little tool, but be aware of its limitations. It’s the most used air rifle in my collection, but it is. Worth noting that changes in temperature can have quite an effect on power output. Definitely worth getting night vision, absolute game changer. I’m sure you’d be capable of making an add on unit yourself.
If you need any advice on further trapping, feel free to find me on the socials to ask.

I have the neo-zap traps. They don't work at all. Rats and mice are too cautious to enter anything enclosed, especially something with such a small entrance. The snap traps work! The black plastic ones you have are good. Try to hide your scent on the traps. I've used cream cheese diluted in water and sprayed it on the trap to hide my scent. It's disgusting but works. Use cream cheese as bait too, or honey, jam, toffee, peanut butter. Good luck!

Slightly disappointed that we didn’t see you dress up in multicoloured clothing and start playing a pipe at the start of this video!

I would tend to agree with you but the mice and rats chewed through the wiring in my van which essentially wrote off my van and would have left me spending £7000 to replace the vehicle. It could have also set fire whilst I was in it, so it's a risk to my life. The rats also chewed through wiring into my lodge that we live in at the moment. That could have also caused a fire and killed my partner and I as well as our dog. That's not to mention how much it would cost to replace the building if we actually got out. I would gladly not kill anything if you have extra lives to give us, or an endless pot of money to replace our property? Alternatively I can use live no kill traps, then I can drop the rodents off to your house? 😝

Wonder if youtube.com/@simon6ppc246 has any suggestions? But looks like you have the air rifle sorted.
