Jessica held the mic away from her mouth Cyndi held the mic in front. That's what made the difference to me. Even if that didn't happen, Cyndi would STILL drown Jessica out.

Strain blocks resonance which is why Christina Aguilera can only resonate on her notes under F4 If Cyndi had been straining, she would’ve fell flat within the first 2-3 seconds of sustaining that note, she wouldn’t have been able to sustain a perfect vibrato, and Patti Labelle would’ve never been as excited to have had her sing if she wasn’t a good singer. Hence why this is the only performance of Patti and Jessica together that I’ve ever seen.
