- Grand Theft Auto V is set in the city of Los Santos, a satirical take on Los Angels, CA. It's full of details, right down the famous Vinewood Sign. But the sign it's based on, despite being some of the world's most famous letters, has a glaring oversight that drives makes me insane.

Since the algorithm is hyping this 9 months later, no I don't believe the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce would sue me if I said or showed the Hollywood Sign. It was just a fun challenge to see if I could avoid doing so like in Tom Scott's video. Also, I'm glad this detail is now embedded, like a splinter in your brain... driving you mad. You're welcome.

I feel your pain, but I think the rebuild filled the brief: recreate the original sign 100% accurately. If the original letters were imperfect, too bad those imperfections were part of the “look” of the sign and had to be included.
Absolutely. It's not "Update the sign to modern standards" it's "Rebuild the sign that everyone knows at just a slightly smaller scale"
They actually changed the O and a couple other glyphs too if memory serves. Wikipedia has a few paragraphs about it.

What an oversight on Rockstar's part. I hope they incorporate a joke about this issue into their next iteration of the Vinewood sign when they remake Los Santos from scratch again in a few decades. Or was the fact that they corrected it the joke?
Well, it was the 1970s, not exactly an age of coherent design. (Though it had its moments) This will definitely be the first thing I notice next time I see the sign that must not be named. :)

I can see the typographical imperfections in the sign, but I disagree on the idea that it should have been corrected upon reconstruction. The whole point of rebuilding it was to extend the life of an iconic landmark. To alter it would be to chip away at its identity. As a (terrible) example, imagine a wax museum decided for aesthetic reasons to "correct" Freddie Mercury's overbite. Perhaps it would be more conventionally photogenic, but I doubt it would look very much like Freddie Mercury.
That said, this channel is fantastic. I may have disagreed on this one small detail, but the quality of Linus' (can I call you Linus?) videos is impeccable. Keep up the good work!
Leaving out the last four letters of the original sign seems like a much bigger change than correcting the W to be symmetrical.
If I'm going to be straight up honest with you, I think the way "W" looked was intended. After all, its quite noticeable if your building or designing it...

As a non graphic designer who does graphic design for work, I often put in small quirks like an off letter or using comic sans just to give people something to complain about.

I think this channel really has legs. I am not especially a typography enthusiast, but this is fascinating. I do have one typography-related story. At work when I’m in charge I write out the names of everyone on staff for the day in a whiteboard. I often make puns or use nicknames to make things more interesting. One employee has the last name Kern and I have been writing his name K e r n for months without anyone noticing the joke I’m making to myself. I don’t think anyone else knows what kerning is, including Mr Kern.

Please do more reviews on GTA V's in game brands/logos. There are so many good ones.
They absolutely did not spend 100s of hours working on the Vinewood sign. As someone who 3D models for games, you would get fired if you spent anywhere near that long on something that simple - even if it is iconic. In total it took probably 1 person less than 2 work weeks. It's very easy to convert imagines into SVGs and SVGs into 3D models, so a lot of the work was probably done in a single day, and from there it was polish polish polish.
The lowercase n at the end of “eleven” on 7- Eleven’s logo bothers me to no end.
I’m glad to say I was able to see this video get a minute into it then go see what you were talking about before you say what it was and figure out for myself what was wrong
The bent left side was pretty far down the list of things I noticed
Some letters are too low and WOO is pushed further back than the others along with the H but not as far back
It could have been an engineering decision to accommodate for the shape of the landscape. If you look at the steel frame behind it you'll notice that the central beam is closer to one side than the other.
Through and through, its still a very iconic landmark through out the world...
Well that's going to bother me in the odd TV show for the next few decades...

Whenever i drive down the highway, i do indeed notice the Hollywood sign but, since it was so far away, i never really thought much of it.
i thought for sure this video would be about the kerning of the LLY. Now I have one more reason to be frustrated by the sign.

I wonder if they made it that way to make it look better from a certain side perspective for ads when the place was new? Most photos of the sign are taken from the other side which makes it look even more skewed, but some are taken from the left perspective where the W look kind of fine. Hmm.

Plenty of people have recorded or taken pictures of the Hollywood sign. They cannot realistically sue millions of people all over the internet, and I highly doubt they have the resources to do it.
They can't sue everyone, but they can and will sue as many people as possible, since suing people for frivolous sums of money is THE reason why they applied for a copyright on the sign in the first place!
Obviously, you are allowed to make photos of it, but you're not legally allowed to share those photos on the internet. Although you'll most likely get away with sharing them with a bunch of family and friends, if you have a large audience - like this channel does - it becomes a rather risky affair indeed.

Haha, thanks mate. I intend to, though probably not anytime soon - I think the best version would be a collab video with someone follows football religiously. Because I don't follow it at all, it will be really interesting to contrast my opinion with someone who knows all the history of the clubs! But I think the channel is still too new, I think it's more realistically something I can look at in 6 months time. I do want to touch on football logos in an upcoming video though, so stay tuned! :)

4:10 didn't really realize it before but yeah, games like GTA probably do have "real" graphic designers working on their games for the fictional / parody advertisements and branding
100 of hours for that single asset? I dont think so, atleast 15 hours max. No way someones gonna spent that much time 3d modelling that one big sign.
Modelling alone no, but textures, lighting, rigging to make it climbable...
