Yakuza's "Terrified" Scotch, Redesigned

- The mystery of liquor labels from Yakuza Kiwami 2 has been stuck in my brain.
Today, I overanalyse environmental game assets, then redesign a fictional scotch label. Why? Because I'm a huge nerd and nobody can stop me.

I suddenly have a huge desire to order a double of Terrified.
I was genuinely surprised at how many real brands they were able to secure for Yakuza. Even the Magazines were real. And so are the cigarettes they smoke. Also the cabaret hostesses are uh... real life adult video performers.
the fact that fair use laws are practically nonexistent in japan makes this all the more impressive
@@nineix9438 it implies that they willingfully worked with them 100% and I just find it odd that a brand like Suntory or something would want to be associated with Yakuza in any form. Be it real or digital.
@@Eirik_Bloodaxe exactly
@@Eirik_Bloodaxe Sponsoring a game titled Yakuza doesn't mean they're associated with real Yakuza group plus It's only "Yakuza" in the west, in Japan the title is something else. Yes, the story is heavily centered around organized crime group, but it's no different than sponsoring or putting ads in a crime drama show.
Probably helps the game isn't called Yakuza in Japan but rather Ryu Ga Gotoku which means Like a Dragon and the Story is mainly based on a former Yakuza mainly going against the Yakuza so that helps
My Japanese client wanted to take me to a girl bar on my last visit to Tokyo - I politely declined on the grounds that I’d seen nude girls before... So he proposed to go to a robot bar - I didn’t decline - it was weird (and fun)!
When in Tokyo! 🤖
Yakuza is a treasure trove of weird and funny lables and signs. My favourites include the Volcanic Volcano pachinko parlour and the Enagy Bar candy bars sold at Don Quixote.
Definitely - there's something about the convenience stores though - I'm considering a video just looking at convenience stores in videos games - it's something I find oddly compelling 😄
I would love to see you redesign several fictional logos, I want to see your takes on fictional brands from games like GTA, Half-Life/Portal, or Fallout, which all have interesting fictional brands, some of which mirror real world brands like Sprunk being Sprite, and Nuka-Cola being Coca Cola.
Fantastic idea for a series!
Loved the label!
One criticism I'd give though, is that the red text with the black background really does a number on the legibility. Perhaps making it gold would have been better. That said, I understand the choice of red, being called "Terrified" and all.
The printed version could have some type of embossing for red text to make it more visible, maybe?
To be fair, that's only used in places where legibility isn't a priority, but it's also really not hard to increase red-black contrast irl
Oh my goodness, this was fantastic! Your Terrified whiskey looks like something you could pick up for real!
If you're looking for more video topics, I'd love to see one on the weird bootleg designs in Deadly Premonition, especially the convenience store. :D
Thank you kindly EGT! I'm glad I'm not the only one with a strange fascination with convenience stores in video games. Maybe I might do a bigger round up of some notable examples across different game series one day!
I LOVED this! Creating feaux labels for imaginary things sounds like an amazing idea for a library
Linus, I have no idea why you did this, but... boy, am I glad ya did!
Proper good job!
Wouldn't mind seeing a few more redesigns of fictitious products though... 👀
Man, my interests are all lining up. Yakuza and typography. Way cool.
I’m currently in university aiming for a BFA in GD, this was an awesome watch as I rarely see design videos tied in with video games, I’d love to see more of these!
Somehow, despite being a big fan of the channel, I'd never seen this one before today, and it might now be one of my small favorites. Cultural anthropology through design feels like a bottomless well of delight to explore. Add to that the fact that it's about video games, which are somewhat underexplored in this field, and that you get to flex your own design chops, and it's a keeper for me!
Also, it reminded me that I never got to order the cocktail book back then, which I have now rectified.
The first font looked great but you were right to change it. Wouldn't fit a basic scotch. A rock band's own brand whiskey though, definitely.
I started playing the Yakuza games during lockdown too! Just found your channel and it’s great!
Easy subscribe. I love both design AND the Yakuza series, and this was a fantastic way to spend five minutes on two very topical things. Thank you very much!
Found this from Jeff Whiskey - label ranking. Terrified would win out of them all.
You know, of all the channels to find Yakuza content, this wasn't the top of the list.
I was scrolling through this channel's videos and this is the less viewed one, but I enjoyed it a lot because I love the Yakuza series lol
Love this video, love seeing the process of how you think and do your designs.
I for one loved this video. I think it would do well re-editing into a short. Might even boost your channel!
Amazing video as ever! Obviously whisky is my thing, and I am mad about the labels so this is brilliant. Sound knowledge throughout! Cheers
I came here from the Clip Art video, this was indeed pretty fun!
Thank you for recommending this little gem in your Clip Art video! 😃 I will be sharing it with my Whiskey loving friend immediately 🥃
This was entertaining as hell!! love the video
Literally got to the part where you first visit the mama and got intrigued by the Terrified bottle
best game series ever and great vid~!
more scotch redesigns!
There's an unfortunate username displayed at 2:48
Other than that, thank you for this video, it's a good redesign!
I like him running with the band reference
Ayy I recognize 'Quaristice' from Autechre! :D
What is the first font used for the "terrified"?? I need to know
Lol, now I know why this clip is the least viewed. Never the less, its cute, short talk about design of whiskey bottle. I like it.
since you found the texture, I hope you pasted your design in, just so it actually appears in game. Unless, that stuff is locked in files, in which case, fair enough, no longer the GTA3 days now.
Yakuza Kiwami 2 in PC is fully modded now, the community has done some amazing stuff. Texture replacement for background item should be easy.
I love the Yakuza series. Didn't like the rpg one but the kiwami ones were fantastic.
Fun video, deserves more views! :-)
Subtle fan art is the best!Cheers 🥃✨🥃
someone mod this into the game right now
You did such a lovely job with that label, but choose the most pedestrian generic bottle to put it on? Strange choice, imo.
We enjoyed the video though!
This is the best kind of weird.
i wish you'd show the call of duty arabic easter eggs or at least link to them in some way especially on reddit because i'm never making a reddit account and i have such a hard time with search terms
You should share the file! I'm sure the Yakuza modding community would really appreciate it. :3
I'd buy it. I'd buy a whole damn case.
I love this
Do more!
I sometimes hate being a graphic designer, but doing something random like this might actually make me like the skill set I have.
neat!
This was cool
I wonder if you could just mod it into the games
somebody should turn this into a mod for kiwami 2
literally just swap out the texture
Please tell me the designers saw this and incorporated it into the next game
me like a glendrona
whiske
"i dont recommend looking this up unless youre nostalgic for the hard rock of the george bush era"
i have never been sold harder on an album
(im listening to terrified right now and its really good)
