For me this 14 minute video turned into 1 hour of searching mentioned fonts, adding them to Mac library, testing them in graphic editor, then going through the internet in search of the book. What an hour it was. Could you probably make a video about books choice for those, who would like to dive into typography but don't know where to start?
I don't know why your channel isn't more popular, this stuff is great!
Hehe, too kind sir!
@@LinusBoman please tell us the story of FF blur and badly vectorized 90s fonts! Also your channel is crazy underrated!
It's still quite new, but don't worry - it will explode sometime in the near future, and it will probably happen quite quickly, practically overnight. So make the most of the time it remains relatively small :)
I love this channel, but I also understand why it may not be more popular. Many people aren’t interested in typeface and design. They see it simply as text and nothing more.
Most underrated channel on RUclips.
Looking forward to when it gets the recognition it deserves.
Keep up the good work and have a splendid day :-)
Much appreciated! Same to you, Solomon!
Really looking forward to the next two parts!
And even more so for the epic Futura history video, 2027 can't come soon enough
8:49 I got so alarmed, I thought you meant it would be RUclips's 100th birthday in 2027. Regardless, if you're still making videos then, I'll be watching! I love this channel!
Feel old yet?
Thanks so much, I will be featuring this in Fontspring's July newsletter! I can't wait to see the rest of this series.
Cheers Brad, much appreciated!
Have you ever thought about typeface design in other languages? In particular, I found the type in the anime Kill la Kill incredibly compelling, even as a non speaker. It alone drew me to the show in a bar, enough to figure out what it was and watch it later. Found it interesting that the type design was so powerful even without understanding the words.
Loving your typography content, keep it up!!
Chinese scripts and fonts are amazing, from ancient bone characters to MS BatingChe. The difference between Japanese and Chinese styles are interesting too!
Just came back from his latest film. The typography is off the scale. I was geeking hard.
Thanks for this highly interesting film, I love Futura and I was sad when Deutsche Bundesbahn replaced its version thereof on station signs by Helvetica in the 1980s.
Speaking of Helvetica, it's mentioned as something of the 1980s. When it's actually from the 1950s and has already been quite prominently used in the 1970s. So much that "raw concrete, orange plastic and big Helvetica inscriptions" are totally 1970s to me (this combination was prominently seen at a swimming pool I used to go to as a child throughout the 1970s/80s).
great vid!
Thanks Jacob! I greatly admire the quality of your writing.
I use tracked-out Futura whenever I can in my projects. I fell in love with this look from 50s advertising. But it can backfire when in practice the person laying out the ad needs to tighten the tracking in order to make copy fit. Oh well, I tried.
I am absolutely shocked and ecstatic at how niche and awesome this content is. Thank you for your work, sir!
Very excited for the episode 3 (I assume) segment on Life Aquatic - Cousteau's typography choices had a huge effect on Anderson's films, so I can't wait for the homage film itself.
On side note of using Futura - I'm partial to the Lexend family instead of Futura for a lot of web stuff, nominally because it's free, but also because Lexend tends to work better at lighter weight and smaller size than Futura. I've never been able to shake the "THIS IS A HEADLINE/IMPORTANT BLOCK OF TEXT" feeling whenever anything is set in Futura - obviously, a feature Wes uses to great effect!
Always excited to see a new Boman video! I know nothing about typography except for what I've learned from you, but you always keep my attention for the entire video no matter the subject.
Also doesn't hurt that I'm a big Wes Anderson fan, so I can't wait for the upcoming videos. And yes, his constructed, theatrical style is very much the appeal. If I wanted to see a realistic film I have a billion other filmmakers to choose from.
Thank you kindly!
The video I didn’t know I’ve been waiting for! Font is pretty crucial for Anderson’s visual style
Great video once again. A thing that has piqued my interest recently is the font usage in scientific papers and the huge influence TeX and Computer Modern had on it. Maybe an idea for a future video?
That would be a fascinating video. I hope he does it!
I could definitely see it getting into balancing aesthetics and readability with large character sets that include niche symbols many computer fonts don't support.
I love seeing how design and art history can have such an impact on world building.
i love your videos. binging them all :D
Great video, its really quiet a wonder why you don’t have a massive following.
That's very kind of you to say!
oh god the nostalgia, i used to read Net Guide back in NZ, these fonts are brining me back
love your stuff man
Thanks mate!
I love this channel immensely! Looking forward to the next video!
What a coincidence. I just made a video about Wes Andersson, and got caught in a rabbit hole of his fonts when tried to make a parody of his movies. haha
This type of entertainment/educational video about typography is exactly what I wanted to see! Pay attention RUclips.
this was amazing congrats linus, waiting for part 2!!
This channel is the holy grail for graphic designers, keep doing these kinds of videos they are great!
Dang! Can't wait for more of this! Would also appreciate more recs on typography references, both historical and design-related (books, videos, websites, etc.).
Excellent video, thank you! Looking forward to the others in this series.
i've binged all your channel content over the last few days and you've made me so passionate about fonts!! really looking forward to reading Never Use Futura, thanks for the rec! can't wait for 2027 ;)
“As always, my name is Linus…” unlike all the other RUclips creators who keep changing their names.
And are not Linus.
The algorithm recently decided I love Wes Anderson review content. It also decided I like fonts. Somehow I had to find this video on my own though! Been working through your videos. :)
Bless you for this content. So fun to find niche videos like this and hope they are rewarded somehow! They deserve recognition at the very least as excellent youtube videos
Can’t wait for part 2! Wes Anderson is my fave directors of all time and I’m definitely a super fan. I did one of my first year film subjects final essay on his love of futura actually ❤️
I always, always love your videos, mate! I don't even care about Wes Anderson and you kept my attention for this whole video. Take care!
Cheers EGT!
Never been this disappointed when a video ends :( can't wait for part 2!!
Here because of Phil Edwards. Not disappointed, instead subscribed. Great Video, man. Looking forward to the next one!
Great breakdown, and well told. I shared it with my co-worker's film club
I would have never realized that watching a video about fonts could be so interesting! Great work!
your content is so interesting! looking forward to the next instalment on wes anderson fonts :-)
Love your videos - keep it up!
Just came across your channel via Typewolf - immediately subscribed for all the nerdy type goodness haha
Such a brilliant essay! I’m writing my university dissertation on intradiagetic design in film with a focus on Anderson so I have to thank you for this video - you’ll be in my bibliography for sure.
Thank you for making a video that I love equally with my mind and my heart.
Great video, can't wait for part 2
Futura is my favorite typeface, I was literally just browsing at a bookstore the other day wondering if there was a book about it. Thank you for the recommendation! As for Wes Anderson, the only one of his movies I've watched is Royal Tenenbaums, and it's crazy seeing how he uses this one font throughout the movie, foreground and background. That's so rare, and meticulous. I look forward to future videos!
What a fantastic video! Waiting for part two
Director John Carpenter evidently had quite The Thing about Albertus typeface for the opening credits of his films.
Interesting video, I'm glad I found your channel!
Wow! Such a thorough and well-researched piece of content. You have earned my like, comment, and sub!
Great content for typography lovers. Subbed.
This is so niche yet so SPECTACULAR 🙌🙌🙌
Amazing content man!
love this! definitely subscribing!!
This was awesome! When is Part 2 coming out?!
Looking forward to the next two instalments.
New subscriber and I love your content! I’m a graphic designer always wanting to learn more. Can’t wait to see your next video!
I am so so glad that Brand New pointed me to this video. This is like the perfect blend of design and film and theory and it's all what I love to watch and enjoy. So glad this is a thing and love your insights into the fonts used in Anderson's films and looking forward to the rest of the series!
Brand New? As in the band?
@@eljestLiv Brand New is a blog type thing that reviews and shows rebrands from various companies and they shared this video as an interesting thing to check out.
I'd like to see you take on Quentin Tarantino's use of typefaces!
Such an awesome video, I seriously cannot wait for you to look at Isle of Dogs and Fantastic Mr Fox, two of my favourite movies!
excited for the next parts!
I'm looking forward to the Futura deep-dive in 2027!
I would love the story of those distorted early digital typefaces.
Awesome vid!!!
The channel got 500 subs in a night! Algorithm blessing you!
Type geek here! 👋 Subbed!
Have you ever designed your own typeface? If so, where can I find it?
A few actually, though mostly for corporate clients. But you can find one that I collaborated on at brailleinstitute.org/freefont
I would definitely like that digital font video 😮
Aaagh!
Seeing my face in a thumbnail after watching your Papyrus video is kind of a shock.
Haha - well there's an unexpected twist! Hope you were still able to enjoy the video Stephen!
@@LinusBoman I was!
I never knew I cared so much about Futura! ;-)
Futura is part of my branding guidelines. It's very Bold. I was given Futura BK and Quicksand
This channel will have a million subs one day.
Such a good video. Commenting for algorithm stuffs
Great! Thanks Linus
Hey Linus! If you're looking for video suggestions, I'd love to see you analyze the DIN 1451 font and/or the FE-Schrift!
Very interesting. Indeed, a parody about Wes Anderson without Futura seems incomplete.
Have you ever researched titles that, when translated/changed for out-of-country releases, have differing fonts compared to its native release?
Brilliant. Subbed :D
Thanks for the in-depth study of the subject and for not bluntly ask for "ring the bell, like and subscribe" in the very beginning of your video. Rare.
8:49 you've got a hilarious mixed antecedent there. RUclips will turn 100 in 2027.
The Most revered Typeface of all time❤.
Those bottle rocket posters, oof!
Thanks for the tweet out Phil! Looking very dapper dad in the new profile pic too!
Brilliant 👏
do you have a video on how to pick fonts for non designers?
Futura is my favorite font...
I didn't know it was such a cliché
i just found the perfect youtube channel
I love this.
very interesting
Love this video! Can’t wait for the next installments! 😍
Linus, you need to do a video on the font Windsor.
It links Woody Allen, All In The Family, Sesame Street, and self-help author Wayne Dyer.
Please do a video about Gaspar Noé’s use of fonts.
Great video! I think it would be great if you could do a video going into the terminology of typography a bit to make feeble minded folks like myself have a bit more comprehension, cheers!
You should Also analyze Peter Greenaway movies, he Is like a familiar to Anderson and Also Loves typography (like un The Pillow Book)
I reckon you should do a comparison of fictitious brand logos, movie logos or something from pop culture!
3:07 (and forward) diEgesis, diEgetic
Would love to see your thoughts on Futura X Vampire Weekend
When's part 2?
Is the next video happening?
Tell me everything, type man!
yesss linus
You should react to Garamond.
