This duo is a breath-of-fresh-air type of discovery for me! I have first encountered Brit on screen in the last days of the year 2024 when I binge-watched "The OA". It's the first time that I see Zal. It hit me when he said "the film captures the soul [of an actor]"! Amazing insight! I've never thought of it that way! Now it makes sense why cinematography and theater are my favorite forms of art and why I'm drawn/not drawn to certain actors. I also loved the Criterion's Closet Picks with Andrew Garfield--his passion for cinema is as inspiring as these guys' love for storytelling through film making. Best regards from the viewer in Ukraine! Peace.
Meh... it hasn't evolved that much. I too discovered her with Another Earth, and I remember thinking, back in the mid-2010's, Jesus, Another Earth, Sound of My Voice, The East, I Origins, that chick is gonna be unavoidable in the indie world... then not much happened. The first season of The OA was good and intriguing but went nowhere interesting, and it kept Marling away from cinema for years... then nothing for years... and that new Murder At the End of the World series doesn't look very entertaining.

if anyone is curious, the films that Brit picked out that she’s holding at about 4:02 that were not mentioned/talked about in the video are: WORKING GIRLS (dir. Lizzie Borden) THELMA AND LOUISE (dir. Ridley Scott) MICHAEL HANEKE: TRILOGY (dir. Michael Haneke) the fourth one she is holding is BLOOD SIMPLE (dir. Coen Brothers), which was talked about in the video.
i wont lie when i tell you that these two are one of my favorite filmmakers of all time. they always make projects that talked about spirituality with sci-fi, and no one does this kinda staff anymore. and also their projects always had a little vibe of "picnic at hanging rock" which i also appreciate
They are so deeply and wholly platonically in love with each other and making art together. Genuinely choked up. They adore each other and their art entirely.
0:32 Brit Marling's reaction when she finds out she can take the videos with her is priceless. By the way, Another Earth has one of the greatest final shots in movie history.
Big fan of all your work Brit and Zal. I also LOVE these films. My life as a house, Grand Canyon, and LA Story. Most Steve Martin wrote stuff the guy with an arrow in his head ? Who woulda thunk he’s a genius! As both you R thanks for all u do
So happy they picked out Klute, it's such an underrated film. The score by Michael Small is understated but fits perfectly with the atmosphere of the film.
I really liked the O.A, which is funny coz I didn’t the first time I watched it, but when the second season came out I rewatched it and all made sense. It’s such a shame the third season was cancelled as it was such an interesting cliffhanger. Very original storytelling. Loved the Russian prostitute joke Brit tells in the lift in the second season, I still use today 😅
Bunch of frickin cuties - lovely vibe, great indie bandidas/os. Instantly one of the best closet sessions - that passion, chemistry, articulation, bloody hell, you frickin go, right behind it!!
I’m currently making an Interpretive dance time travel series called ‘just dance: 1820’. It’s about these kids that are all different but they dance their at to 1820 NEW YORK CITY! But they get stuck and need to learn a new dance move to get back home!
I have been watching these videos for long time and really like it. One thing is super annoying though when we don't know what movie they are talking about and it has happened in many other videos too. Guests will pick up a movie and will say 'oh this one....' and just start talking about it without showing it to the camera or mentioning the title. so one simple solution is, you can add poster with little info on screen for each moments when guests pick the movies (regardless of if title is mentioned by them or not, i know all titles come in the end but it's not that fun by then).
Hi, I would like to watch the movie but I can't find it by the DVD cover they showed. Went on IMDB, there's a bunch of movies by that name. Can you help?
The OA and 'Sound of my voice' are pieces of art that will stay with me forever. The two of them make a brand and feel of cinema that is wholly unique and special.
After Life: I’m having trouble figuring out what version from their DVD cover. I’m currently watching Liam Neeson, Justin Long, and Christina Ricci version. Anyone know?
I also watched the double life of veronique when I was like 15. Now I rewatched it and for one thing it felt like she is too much in the center. just too beautiful of the movie.
For a great "unexpected friendship" movie check out Wildlike (2014) with Bruce Greenwood and a young Ella Purnell of current Fallout fame. (I've never seen a bad movie that has Bruce Greenwood in it.)

My dumbass thought Brit was really that tall from the thumbnail. I really need to go sleep
I thought the same and the first few frames of the video didn't help 💀
Get some sleep, then watch the video
@@antoinepetrov if you have nothing substantial or helpful, goto sleep yourself

Brit Marling's enthusiasm is unrivalled. What a joy to witness.

THANK YOU
The original Blood Simple, or the ruined “Director’s Cut” which no-one asked for, as the original was damned-near perfect.
wow you did so well to identify those! thank you!
4:10 was such a genuinely adorable moment.
So annoying.

Picnic at hanging rock!!! What an incredible, eerie and mesmerising movie.
Yeah more movies about super smart, extremely attractive and cool hackers amirite
You are pretentious as they are.
What about Alex Garland?
The love and passion for cinema is palpable. Thank you!
I love all the dynamic dialogue. I'd love to see more 2+ people in the closet. Those are usually even more enjoyable than the solo joints.
Solo joints are ok, too. I like both.
The OA was a crime that they stopped this series! great artists right there!
They are so deeply and wholly platonically in love with each other and making art together. Genuinely choked up. They adore each other and their art entirely.
love their dynamic, this is what a creative partnership FEELS like. Very cool, would love to walk through their garden...
Two sublime, amazing and deep human beings ❤️🦋 Thank you for all the beauty that you two create. And please bring back the OA🌟
We are in the dimension where Brit forgets she is The OA and we are all part of it. Genious.
Im still sad they, cancelled that show
i guess they failed to wake her up 😞
0:32 Brit Marling's reaction when she finds out she can take the videos with her is priceless. By the way, Another Earth has one of the greatest final shots in movie history.
They are so passionate about the films, it was so much fun to watch
They are such iconic and inspirational duo that makes so good movies (and shows) and love how enthusiastic Brit are over those films!
I love their appreciation of Kieslowski!!!! ❤❤❤❤
Just wanted to shoutout THE OA and reminisce about how great of a show that was. Really wish they had been able to continue with it.

Wow, their excitement makes it so fun to watch... Also thanks for the list of films..😄😄😃
I've had a crush on Brit since Another Earth. What a wow movie.
These two our some of the greatest artists of our time. It’s a life goal of mine to work on something that one of these two are running
I could watch Brit talking about movies, storytelling, and metaphysics for hours
😊😊😊😊😊
I love this reaction when she realizes she could take the movies 0:29
Loved the OA… addicted right now, to murder at the edge of world… she is just so awesome and cool and smart and creative. Huge. BRITT fan…

Their conversation on AFTER LIFE, sounds like WOODY ALLEN dialogue. I love it.

"Film captures soul." Beautiful.

@83jurki search afterlife criterion and you'll find it 🙂
These are two very elegant, cultivated, well-spoken and good-looking people who should make more movies and better things.
I think these two might just be the future of modern cinema -- at least the cinema I want to watch.
I love them so much 💖💖
This was extremely wholesome 😭🥰💞
Happy to see them liking Drive My Car.
These two are my favorite.
One of the best closet picks 👍
lol this cured my depression. I've been liking Murder at the End of the World but this video single-handedly convinced me to start The OA.

I saw After Life in film school and the professor paired it with the novel Hard boiled Wonderland at the End of the World.
You should check out both.
My favorite episode of this series by far.
Brit is a true cinephile and it shows in her work. A prodigy we will only see once in a lifetime.
Discovered Brit thanks to The OA. What a gifted actor. Wow. Glad to see her enthusiasm in the closet.
We need seasons 1 and 2 of the OA on 4K UHD A S A P!!!!!!!!!
After Life: I’m having trouble figuring out what version from their DVD cover. I’m currently watching Liam Neeson, Justin Long, and Christina Ricci version. Anyone know?
I’m still processing the season 2 finale of The OA. To think they were going to give us three more seasons is a crime that Netflix cancelled it.
The actress in the Double Life of Véronique was a true “muse”.
This is one of my favorites, just instantaneously.
I know I will never get into the closet, but I love the vicariousnes of these videos.
I just love her!! ❤️

RELEASE THE EXTENDED CUT!
Sound of my Voice is great.
Are we ever gonna get the Criterion Channel in the UK? I feel impoverished.
The love of film! This is what draws me back.
We need The OA S3! Also, criterion - Shuji Terayama - when?
love seeing them
I love their friendship
In retrospect, "The Double Life of Veronique" pretty clearly had a huge influence on "Chungking Express"
Another Earth has a special place in my heart. I still regard it as one of the most underappreciated films I’ve ever seen.
If you talk about blood simple please include the magnificent performance from M. Emmet Walsh. He is amazing as one of the antagonists.
Agreed. Fonda is phenomenal in “Klute”. This and “They Shoot Horses Don’t They” are probably her top two performances.
oh my god! how i love these two😭❤️
After Life is absolutely brilliant. And it's on RUclips.
Which one are they talking about? They’re are a few films with that name.
@@thompgal the Japanese one released in 1998 directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda
