- It's a logo battle royale! In this video, As a graphic designer specialising in lettering and branding, I methodically rate and roast all 32 #London borough councils (plus the City of London's) logo designs.
It's a challenging job for anyone to take one - and this isn't a reflection on the people or the municipal governments of these councils. Hopefully we learn something along the way!

Linus, I really loved this video! I co-make the Unfinished London videos with Jay, so came to this as you linked so nicely to our video, but really well executed, very interesting and I really like your presenting-style!
Hi Paul, thank you kindly - I've been a long time fan of the Unfinished London series - it means a lot to me that you and Jay both enjoyed the video! I'm very grateful for Jay sharing it with your audience on twitter too, since your viewers are exactly the kind of curious, thoughtful people I hope to reach on my fledgling channel. River, river, river, leaf (H&F, Richmond, Tower Hamlets, Redbridge)
Text with website underneath (Croydon)
Fox's head with eagle's palms (Enfield)
Lots of boring coats of arms (Hillingdon, Hounslow, Havering, Bexley)
Flower, tree, tree, tree (Greenwich, Ealing, Sutton, Waltham Forest)
Stolen from the BBC (Barnet)
Very 90's, round and bold (B&D, Hackney)
Painted by a 5 year old (Haringey)
Flappy triangles appeal (Lambeth)
Happy crown and water wheel (Lewisham, Merton)
Circle skyline, painty, lame (Wandsworth, Bromley, Harrow)
Looks like someone signed their name (Southwark)
Swirly B and swishy N (Brent, Newham)
Boring coats of arms again (Kingston, K&C, Westminster, Islington)
Eight blobs no one understands (Camden)

Man some of these are truly atrocious. I live in Newham! And you’re right, the logo hasn’t changed how I think about the council. I already thought it was shite.
I live in Newham too and though I honestly haven't ever given the logo a second thought, I definitely do not think it was the worst one 😂
The whole area is :/
Nothing changes in N’aam
Funny you should comment. I always thought Newham's logo should belong to some kind of local medical organisation.
I think the swoosh is maybe the Thames? But yeah logo pretty much says nothing.
use of a distinctive colour is also important I think, as it’s used on street signs. Lewisham is known locally as ‘the blue borough’, and you can tell you’re not it in anymore when the street signs turn green in Bromley.
As a former Newham resident, I went into this video eagerly anticipating that wet fart of a logo getting the teardown it deserves. I was *not* disappointed.
At first I thought the current one was a marginal improvement on the previous logo with the thicker swoosh, with the weird pointed ends and the horrible Windows 95-looking fade effect, but, like you said about Harrow, at least that one made me feel something. Even if it was distaste.
Haha, wet fart is an evocative description, though I feel that falsely conveys a logo which *does* leave a lingering impression. 😂 Glad you enjoyed the video Doc!
cool heraldry tidbit! the animal in the Enfield logo is, in fact, an enfield: a heraldic creature with the head of a fox, forelegs of an eagle, torso of a greyhound and a lion, and back legs of a wolf. This makes it a heraldic pun, which is called a cant. The arms of the Borough of Enfield have an enfield, and an enfield is one of the supporters when it's displayed as an achievement of arms.
10:00 I find that the logo of Hackney looks like the logo of a steel company. Mainly because logos of such companies here in the Netherlands had similar logos and often used the first letter to create a symmetrical, simple brand logo.
After all, the logo of Hackney is really well executed!
I feel like Richmond were making a poor attempt at showing that they're the only borough both sides of the river
"Harrow Council colonoscopy clinic" would make good use of that font
You could do something similar with either the flags of the world, the flags of europe or the counties of england. Also maybe sports teams logos like the premier league teams
I tried to think of a terrible place in the UK and my mind immediately went to Scunthorpe. Now I didn't find the Scunthorpe city logo but I did find the Scunthorpe F.C. logo, and... that man is holding the iron bar sideways.
I have zero taste in logos and watched this whole video thinking I'd have been hard pressed to find anything to say about them, but regardless this is turning out to be a fun activity.

Really great video.
I previously worked at Newham (as a designer) and always hated the logo for similar reasons - it's so insipid. Much to my horror I found out while working there it was indeed commissioned and made by an outside design agency (despite having an in-house design team). I don't necessarily mind that it was outsourced, I think it makes sense to have an exterior perspective, but for it to be so bad and that the design team had zero consultation on it is a really damning indictment of the way that place is run. When I was leaving they were looking at a rebrand, and they had earmarked an agency to do it. It wasn't a design agency though, it was a PR agency. So nothing better will come of that I'm sure.
In a slightly less bitchy and more interesting piece of info, I now work at Tower Hamlets and we updated our logo not long after this video came out to get rid of those wonky lines and jagged edges. It looks markedly better, but we often comment that we doubt anyone but other designers would see the difference.
I find university logos fascinating because their text element is pretty uniform but they have different approaches to representing what they stand for.
Around the rise in fees in 2012 many changed their logos to focus on seeming more prestigious. For example Winchester went from a strong local symbol to a crest that says prestige but is weaker in my opinion.
Oh, that would be very interesting to compare! Thanks for the suggestion 👍
Not from Europe, but the University of Illinois swapped over from the "Column I," which evoked the school's status as very strong Engineering and Architecture school, as were its roots and founding intentions, to the "Block I," just to be in-line with other big 10 schools.

Greenwich missed a trick in not making their "swoosh" match the curve of the River Thames adjacent to the borough like Hammersmith and Fulham did
They could hark back to Prime Meridian
As a resident of Greenwich, the logo doesn't really say much about the borough at all. Why not play up the nautical angle or that Greenwich is the centre of the world? Heck, the Shepherd Gate clock would be a great source of inspiration to take from and give the logo more ownership. Greenwich's coat of arms is a much better representation and incorporates much of what I said above that plays into Greenwich's associated history with the military, royalty and astronomical studies.
The swoosh is supposed to represent the curve of the river at Greenwich. It's a modernised version of the old logo (which had lines to represent the river)
@@InstrumentalsBeats Is he Australian? Does not seem to recognise the riverside councils due to distaste of similar swoosh style.
The redbridge logo with the image of a leaf brought major nostalgia, early 2000s those photo logos were everywhere.. Also the harrow logo takes me right back to that time. It looks like something from a Trance music video or vengaboys video.
I've lived in Newham my whole life. That logo is the perfect description of what it feels like to live here 🤣🤣🤣 Great Video!
22:00 I kind of disagree. The Battersea Power Station as seen in that skyline is notorious, it features in so many films and photographs. For example it's the subject of the album art on Pink Floyd's Animals.
had the same response to this, "I'm sorry, did you just tell me that a coal fired power station I can recognize at a glance despite having never been to the UK at all isn't iconic?"
Very nicely done and shines a light on how the design standards are so low for borough councils. I somewhat covered this topic for my college dissertation at St Martin’s when I looked at the disparity between how areas marketed themselves to tourists versus the actual residents.
Logos for the former were clearly given much more leeway to present the area in a very positive light and clearly had a different approval process (possibly with different final approvers). I wrote my dissertation in 1996 and was amazed to see the likes of Camden, Merton and a few others hadn’t changed their borough logo.
I think you’d be fascinated to make a similar video that compares the tourist vs resident logos of the same boroughs.
The little OUO on the crest in Islington makes me laugh so hard. I'm assuming it's meant to be like, two suns and a moon or something -- anything that ISN'T a little obscenely happy face, but I've just been on the internet too long and it just looks like a personified, excessively happy thing to me. (And then the plant swooshes kinda end up furthering that and looking like arms/hands on hips...)
Loved this video! I feel like the Westminster crest is actually pretty charming, if only because it reminds me of an imperfect woodblock print. Feels like I’m in a medieval printing workshop.
If it was a woodblock print (or castiron mold e.g.) it would've been great. Yet it is the original logo, not a handcrafted adaptation. So I get why it was rated lower than it should
Westminster has a very distinctive version of a W cast into pretty much every lamppost of its territory. I wonder why they don't make this W their logo.
Plus the CC on the other side of the lamppost might be worked in in some way (stands for City Council). Thanks for telling us about that.
Jay Forman sent me. Great video, really enjoyed it, will definitely subscribe. :)
Also, I googled that Eric Gill guy... Jesus Christ, you weren't kidding.
Haha, yes it's a shame that so many great artists were some of history's great monsters. Yeesh. :[
@@LinusBoman If I had a choice and a time machine, I would rather spend an evening with Caravaggio, who would make Olly Reed look like a schoolboy in comparison, then even five minutes in the company of a totally uninhibited Eric Gill in his studio. What he would have inferred and sketches and other images I would have seen would have soiled my soul for life.
As a local government lifer who has worked for a number of, and dealt with even more county, borough and district councils over the past three decades, I am sad enough to be able to recognise most council logos even if the names are removed. I've noticed a trend in their rebranding over the last ten years or so from using bland genertic instantly forgettable motifs to strong memorable visuals with local characteristics, two good examples being Staffordshire CC using the Stafford knot and Leicestershire CC using a fox standing on a capital L. Both I think will stand the test of time. However Lincolnshire CC's and Coventry City Council's latest attempts at utilising the Lincoln imp and Lady Godiva respectively seem lame in comparison but at least the intention was there, unlike many of the logos you constructively criticised here.
Your videos amaze me with their quality. I hope you enjoy making them. I'll share them with friends that might find them interesting.
Thank you, you're too kind!
I like the typeface of City of London because it evokes an image of London and England from deep history. It is reminiscent of history and legend while maintaining a sense of modernity and progress.
Sir, I’ve been binge watching your videos since I’ve found you today. I’ve learned so much about design. Please keep making more videos!
'It looks like something that a middle schooler would draw on the condensation inside a bus window" oh my god your roasts are so hilariously accurate! Loved the video, I'm not even interested in the topic but you talk about it so interestingly :D
Something I really appreciate about Linus’s videos is how he lets you know the framework. He checks in so that you know what to expect, without repeating himself or spoiling the content. Good stuff.
Today I learned London boroughs have logos... Even though I live in one
Edit: I guess I have seen them everywhere, I just never associated it as a borough logo. It is a tree, and I only really see it on park signs so it makes sense as the general sign for parks rather than the whole boroughs logo
dont you ever get letters from your council
I am so surprised how ugly London's council logos are, considering how wealthy London is. Makes Dublin's council logos look like Picasso's work.
Some of the boroughs are extremely poor, I think Newham is the poorest for example. Some areas are rich but definitely not all
Edit - well, I've just finished the video and I guess that fits lmao
Quite typical of the paralysis of public services. Can't spend too much money on the logo for fear of being accused of wasting money. Too afraid to go for something bold in case it offends people. Probably had too many people consulted which gave too many contradictory wishes. Commissioner of the logo probably had no specialism in graphic design. In the end settles for something 'safe' and inoffensive but ultimately pretty boring.

This is really interesting. I am on a community council in Wales (the equivalent of an English parish council) and we've been trying to push for a rebrand since forever. Never really priority though! Community councils might not make for an interesting video but it would certainly be interesting to see your take on Wales' 22 county councils and see what you think of their efforts.
Thanks Arthur - there's a few comments now for Wales actually, so I'll see what I can do!
Cracking overview, solid technical, with good history and funny af too - well played
I'd like to see a rundown of the old Borough logos too.
Haringey's old logo was really really good if you ask me. After dealing with documents and media materials from the Borough, they all used a variation of the "lightning sun" or a lightning bolt from it and you could instantly tell stuff related to the borough. Meanwhile the H they use now is pretty crappy.
I'm so glad to stumble into this companion video to the London boroughs one. I was choking on my spit laughing at how you roasted the crest for Bexley lmao
Loving this! Thinking far too much about bad logos around me now
I've always loved Derbyshire's logo, the spiral D. It has great ownability and faxibility/faviconability. Sadly it's in plum and white these days rather than the eye-watering purple and orange of the 70s and 80s, but it probably causes fewer seizures in onlookers. I don't know whether I *like* it or not, but once seen never forgotten.
Great mix of nerdery and accessibility. Your presenting style and voice is lovely too!
Thank you kindly!
Suggestion for another video: UK Train Operating Company logos. (Can do past ones as well, there's a lot of bad ones!)
The wandsworth logo is just like “You like animals by that ‘pink Floyd’ band don’t ya? Well..come here!”
That's an iconic skyline if you ask me
@@georgelloydgonzalez Loved this video but yeah it doesn't get much more iconic than Battersea Power Station!
Absolutely loved this video. These are the kind of odd conversations I miss with the brand team at work.
Southwark reminded of the logo that Tom Scott has on his website, but on closer look the borough's typography is a lot more awkward.
The presentation is excellent. I mean both the aesthetic quality of the footage but also the way the information was organized: introduction, goal, rules, explanation of the rules, presentation of the roster, little graph and text to show the scores rather than stating them... lots of good ideas
Thank you, that's very kind to say!

The suitability aspect makes me think of when my municipality switched from a birch leaf to just plain (albeit green) text. The birch leaf is a historical symbbl referrng to to the planting of birch trees after the city fire in 1888
I'm born & raised in Hackney, now living in Kingston upon Thames and I can tell you that Hackney's logo isn't the only thing it has over Kingston...
If you think some of these are bad, look at the logo for “Evri” (Hermes delivery rebrand). The letters are all different fonts, widths and designs it’s a nightmare 😂😂
Damn you're so smooth to listen too ! Very interesting video, love being filled with pointless informations that I'll inexplicably remember forever (totally serious, it may not find a use in my life, but knowing all this fills me with joy anyway !)
Jay Foreman sent me too, I know nothing about graphic design but this was unexpectedly very soothing. Thank you. Southwark & Richmond represent.
I actually really like the uniqueness of Haringey's logo, although now you mentioned that it looks like red tape that's all I'm gonna think of when I see it
I see you're fairly new on here but I hope you continue to produce content! This was really interesting and I was fascinated by how you characterised the different fonts and logos because although I find fonts interesting, my brain just doesn't pick up on what they look like 👀 maybe you could do a video on what to look for in a font?
Thank you! This is actually my 3rd or 4th attempt at youtube, depending how you count, but yes, I'm planning to stay the course this time. I'd love to do some basic primers on typography - glad to know that some people would be interested to watch!
You definitely need more subs, the quality of the editing is insane, and it's also equally informative and entertaining
Would be great to see UK County Council logos rated. Dorset have a new one, would love to hear your thoughts!
i found Jay's video/borough rhyme really funny, but you helped me appreciate the logo isn't just about a drawing. it goes on everywhere and it needs to be adapted to all sorts of applications, including reducing it to a size of a post stamp.
having said that, i'm surprised you ranked Newham lower than Croydon or Southwark. I can see you dislike swooshes, but they're more inventive than just having your name or a "signature" like the other 2. I'm also surprised Lambeth got so many points. those "triangles"/whatever those yellow things are, are reminiscent of nothing and don't really add much to the logo
anyway, you did mention personal preference and i guess those are mine. great video
Hey, thanks Diogo. Ultimately any system for ranking visual flair will be subjective, but something I perhaps under-explained was the craftsmanship involved in doing something simple, well. Lambeth's triangle flags may seem simple, but as a designer, I can immediately tell that weeks of tweaking and care went into getting them just right. Contrast that with the examples of "autotrace" that I rail against - it's like the difference between a sandwich made with store bought, mass produced, pre-sliced bread or making a sourdough from scratch. I understand not everyone will appreciate it on the same level, but maybe I should do a video explaining this concept a little clearer. Cheers for checking out the channel!
Hey Linus... Just wanted to drop by and say how much I'm enjoying your videos. I only discovered your work on RUclips very recently, but I'm having fun going back through your archive! You make some very interesting comments and always have something worthwhile to say on the subject of graphic design.
Re: the London Borough logos, I'm broadly in agreement with what you said, especially regarding the Barking and Dagenham logo. I was working for the borough when it introduced the double arc and I was as dumbfounded then as I am now. B&D used to use it's coat of arms much more prior to the late 90's, but when they brought in this unimaginative dross, my heart sank. A great opportunity missed, I'd say.
One other thing: When I see a logo that has two identical/similar letters together (as in the stylised H and the capital H of the word Hackney), I find it really jarring. What's your thoughts on that? I wondered if you'd mark the logo down because of the close proximity of the two H's. I feel the circular H should be spaced a little further away from the name... is that fair comment?!
Anyway, keep up the good work... I think your videos are great! (Best wishes from New Zealand...)
Same, just discovered the channel recently and Linus has a great archive on offer!
Newham has the Olympic park, the Vic & Albert docks, Thames barrier, AND the Beckton Sewage Treatment Plant and somehow all they could come up with was a generic swoosh...
i know nothing about graphic design, looking at the logos I could only go 'oh pretty, pretty, ugly, pretty'... and that's all the insight I have 😂 but despite my ignorance, I've massively enjoyed the video, it was truly a pleasure to watch!! (and I fee a bit less ignorant now, so thank you about that, too!)
I live in New York City and our boroughs don't have logos, the way we distinguish between the areas is each borough has a different guy with a knife at the bus stop.
Brilliant! I also laughed out loud at the poking pinky logo. Harningey is so weird it would go well on a t-shirt or something. Apparently Haringey is "more than just a place. It is an attitude" :D
Haringey should go the whole hog and make it a graffiti tag.
Liked this off the bat for being such an original idea
Loved this video, first i've seen from your channel. Perhaps you could do a future video where you do what you would have done for the very worst logos/types? Thanks!
I'd criticise Hackney for using the logo directly to the left of the name since there's a repetition and clash of style between the logo-H and the text-H. I wouldn't omit the text-H, since that would look stupid, but I'd always have the logo larger and centred above the name.
True... I have always loved the funny space craft "H" Hackney has, there is something very retro cool and also positive about it... It needs to be made more of.
Loved the humor given to the Southwark logo, a kid drawing on the condensation inside a bus window, "priceless." The "W" in the Harrow Council logo could be doing something naughty to the "C" in council, just thinking.
Great video! I'm glad I discovered you channel in its tender infancy.
Cheers Paul!
Having spent time in Newham, I could've told you it would've come last without ever seeing the logo at all
Would love to see you re-design the worst ones!
I think the Lambeth lettering is very similar to the Ubuntu typeface - almost a striking resemblance, despite the fact the Ubuntu fonts were released in 2010 (and was designed by Dalton Maag).
Quality educational material right here. I don't have any personal investment in London borough logo design, but I still clung to your every sass-tastic word.
Absolutely brilliant!
Found your channel not long ago and I've adored it ever since :)
How is this so interesting? I don’t even live in the UK and I’m still nodding away at these critiques!
2:20 - I disagree. The New York Apples sounds like a great name for a sports team and I could totally imagine them having the Apple logo.
New York Apples is one of the worst bands I've ever heard. Apples? Talk about underwhelming.
At least it's not racist.
I like this video I wanted to learn about the logos, I couldn’t find any other video and I’m pleased with this, Nice work :)
Nice - been looking forward to one of these critique videos :)
I'm late to this, but could you do a series rating university logos, please? 😅
Would be fascinated to hear your thoughts on Securitas’ recent rebrand. It redid the whole trade dress from logo to car livery, and it’s been pretty controversial…
Absolutely great video, keep giving us stuff like this!
I am another viewer who is shocked there was NO mention the O◡O happy face in the top of Islington's shield in its coat of arms. That's adorable. I have no idea what it's meant to represent, but it looks adorable.
Brilliant video Linus! Miffed at the poor performance of Tower Hamlets...
There's a lot they're leaving on the table! Still, many worse in the batch! 😂
Me, not a Londoner, not a brit, not a typographer or graphic designer, enjoying these videos a lot
I remember the old Sutton logo. Proud Sutton resident for...most of my life. It used to be an Oak Tree with very clear acorns - I miss those acorns 😥
IMO Wandsworth should be a few places higher, it has the outline of Battersea Park Power Station - which is really iconic!
As a graphic design nerd I am in love with these vids!
I feel like you failed to appreciate that the R in the Richmond logo looks like the Thames in Richmond on a map, which I think is kind of clever.

this popped up in my feed and i love it. well done analysis and presentation! i’m not so down on the city of london as you are and would put that at the top despite the crest’s weaknesses. i do cringe at the use of two different ampersands in the hammersmith & fulham logo. the large one in blue is disturbingly odd with its array of thicknesses that distracts from the rather nice large h or f and only loosely connects (literally and figuratively) to the unnecessary ribbon element. i’d love to see a modern update to camden, there’s some potential to build from there. nice video, you’ve gained a subscriber!
talking about the Barking and Dagenham logo, as a local I can tell you (post-2020) they now don't use the swooshes on the side and the Barking and Dagenham part is stacked on top of each other
At one time Towere Hamlets divided itself into 7 "neighbourhoods" each with its own colour for everything including the logo.
Loved this video! Amusing and informative!
I never noticed Islington had a crest! I've only known of the text logo. I just checked the council website and it's right there, but too small to be properly legible. At that size it just looks like every other crest/coat of arms.
5:25 "who's crest is best" can be a great game, Tee k.o style
The Barking & Dagenham logo looks like the book cover you’d see on the 140 page Windows XP manual.
Fascinating to see what a professional picks up on and considers suitable, personally I'd scrap the whole lot with the notable exceptions of City of London, Islington and Sutton (!)
You mentioning Trajan at 19:30 reminded me of a logo I'd like to get your opinion on -
The BIONICLE Logo.
Specifically their 2001 branding campaigns.
I live in Islington and for some reason always thought it was the weird green lines that are everywhere. (Street signs, disabled busses, government documents)
God, I've had to work with a lot of these logos in software we sell to some of these councils. There seems to be very little knowledge within the councils on how to apply their logos. I've just gone ahead and re-done them a couple of times and always get a "That looks good, better than our real logo."
