This isn’t the case on almost every newer design of plane, such as the A320 series, 777, or A350. The 737 has an old design for door, that cannot be significantly updated, because then it’d be a new plane type and more expensive to certify.

The interesing thing to note is that Ryanair has actually a pretty good safety level - not famed Quantas level, but still quite good. Industry experts largely attribute this to the homogenous fleet they run (literally the entire fleet is made of one single model of aircraft), which leads to pilots, flight deck crew and engineers being familiar with this one aircraft relatively quickly and reduces the chance of mix-ups between types. The only thing that dampens their safety record more than usual (in comparison to other carriers) is indeed their relatively high count of injured (but not dead) passengers, mostly stemming from emergency landings. So your comment about safety isn't theoretical at all: Ryanair has demonstrably worse numbers when evacuating a plane than most carriers - and that's not for lack of training on the crew's part, because they always fly the same model...

Ryanair does operate a bit over 20 Airbus A320s from Lauda which are maintained by some of the same engineers as the 737s; not in Vienna but when they sleep outside of the hub airport or have some sort of issue during a turnaround at an airport where Ryanair has maintenance they do. Also with the addition of 737 Max (or 737-8200 as they like to call it XD) there will also be some variation although not that much from the regular 737NG.
As you were saying it is difficult to say that Ryanair has lower "safety" compared to other carriers given the sheer amount of flights they have and passengers they move. It is the biggest airline in Europe.
Their maintenance programme is the best there is around in my opinion, they have 3 Learjets they send around with parts for AOGs or even to close regular HILs sometimes that aren't even going to expire. They put a lot of effort and money in maintenance because safety is their top priority, as with any airline, but they take it very seriously.

Aircraft banged on the runway with the top of a rear landing gear coming through the wing.
A few sore necks, aircraft scrapped.
1 hull loss due to external factors, 0 deaths with something like 115M pax per year pre-pandemic.
Compare that with Emirates slamming a plane into the runway because none of the pilots checked the thrust levers actually went forward after pressing TOGA.
But the aftermath on that (before the accident report was silently published) was woohoo, go Emirates, safe as fuck, no one died! (Except a firefighter).

So they tried to fix it digitally by adding colors, and that's why the blue guy has a shirt that is both yellow and green. No wonder nobody knows what to do if Ryanair has an emergency situation. They should redesign it,, especially if it's a sticker you have to look at during the whole flight.

I'm not an expert on this but I study air crashes and the last thing you want to be doing when evacuating the aircraft is getting on all fours. Crouching sure, but crawling puts you at danger of being trampled, others in danger of tripping over you, and would slow down the entire disembarkment. The only added benefit of doing this would be to avoid smoke inhalation and to see the escape path lighting on the ground, but again, you can crouch and walk, you don't need to crawl. If it has got to the point where you *have* to crawl you're already pretty fucked if you aren't close to an exit. I don't really understand why they would feature that on a safety card.

    • @seraphina985
      @seraphina985 2 года назад +7

Indeed this really is not exactly the best advice in any fire where evacuation is an available option, plan A stay as low as you can without impacting priority one get out as soon as you can safely do so. If anything getting as low to the ground as possible comes in more in situations where unaided evacuation is not possible but external rescue is. By that I mean something like a structural fire with no useable evacuation route, then sure get as far bellow and away from the source of any fire or smoke as possible, closing any available barriers you pass, get as low to the floor as you can and communicate your position as accurately as possible to rescue services via any available means you have (Basically buy as much time as possible and do whatever you can to expedite rescue).

Actually the airlines and safety regulators would prefer you take nothing with you while evacuating. They want you to move quickly when it is time to evacuate, and they want your hands free to grasp, etc.
Flight attendants turn into drill instructors when it is time to evacuate a plane. They’ll yell, shove, and order passengers around. It’s not “friendly” but when that’s the case the customer service is getting you out of the plane safely and quickly.

TBH, I think overhead compartments should be locked remotely by the flight attendants during all critical phases of flight. (Taxi, Takeoff, Landing, until the plane is above 10,000 ft) The lock would have to be designed so that if the power goes out, it stays locked, but could be unlocked with a key that the flight attendants have.
I think many, but not all, of the cases of people taking their luggage is just them following their habit of stand up, then get their bag. If the overhead compartment is locked, that habit will be interrupted. It does nothing for the luggage under the seats, but people retrieving that at least don't block the aisle.

If they just had rows of 4 boxes neatly organized and a vertical thin line dividing those two rows, at least I could segment the boxes into sections and have an idea of how to approach reading it and how it's organized. Being cluttered may ultimately be the worst part, even if it's such a simple thing and it will have to contain a lot of info in a small space, there are plenty of ways to fix this.

I agree with the overall point that their design sucks but while speaking about those arrows from 4:37 I believe there’s a reason for that. Yellow represents luminescent floor path marking and yellow slides, whereas in case of 737-800 the aircraft is not equipped with slides coming from the wings, so it seems that coloring is pretty accurate.

He got screwed with Brexit though, there were so many cases against Ryan Air and refunds just before it finally happened. The UK courts delayed it just long enough to say "Nope. You have to refund them" just as the opportunity for him to take the long path of dragging/delaying it through European courts closed.

I swear the airlines just ask whoever is handy in the office to design this stuff. The idea behind those crap designs is called in Germany the "Döner Kebab"- or "Aldi-effect. You deliberately chose poor choices, poor design, and poor fonts to make it look "cheap" - the German buyer thinks "they must be cheap as they do not spend money on beauty." Aldi has changed direction by now, but most Turkish "Imbiss" still look like that - that is exactly what they want (again - the first one changing it to a professional look will have people thinking, "That must be more expensive now, let's go to another Döner place.").
For Ryanair, you can compare that to EasyJet. Same class of cheap no-frill flights, but EasyJet clearly has better CI and design patterns in their publications. Result: Ryanair more or less won in numbers of revenue, passengers, etc.
eBay did exactly the same when they began; it looked horrible and inconsistent. It was a deliberate choice to give the user the impression of being a flea market. Still today, it always looks unfinished.

About the 90sec thing, that's the test the aircraft must pass before being certified (by the FAA I think). They nab enough untrained people off the streets and plop them down, have the "exits are here, here, and here" and herd them out like sheep through an open gate. No doubt that getting out fast will be bettera but that's why the stats are pointing to 90sec as the epitome of safe evacuation.
There are also instances where fleeing isn't the best idea. A Qantas flight once had a horrid time in the air, landed with too much fuel (as in the mass of the airframe = the mass of fuel) resulting in incandescent brakes. The pilots concluded that, with the firetruck that was already helping out, disembarking normally was the best for everyone's safety. And that rounded up like 2h after the emergency landing

Its just .. the front-side of a regular life jacket, but placed hrozintally with the infant sitting in the neckhole. and without a rope underneath theyd literally just fall out thru that hole if their arms are ever pulled in to their body, cause theres no fucking harness aside from THIS ROPE. ..... all this supposedly conveyed by the red arrows, very poorly.

Human factors phd student here. You nailed it. There are basic principles of human factors, especially with graphics/diagrams, and Ryanair followed almost none of them. My research specialises in aviation, and these cards are, to an extent, passengers' last line of defense in case of an emergency. You have only around 90 seconds to evacuate everyone on the plane, if you're lucky. If people don't understand what's on these cards, well, 90 seconds goes by a lot faster with a lot fewer people off the plane

I loved this, got a few chuckles along the way ;) Their safety card design really does suck and while it does seem like they just photocopied their older design and then glued it to the seatback in the name of saving money I have no doubt that they are not cutting corners safety wise, O'Leary said that he never objects to the news stories cropping up every now and then regarding the pay-to-use toilets or the stand-up seating as it keeps the airline in the public consciousness, the image of one of his airliners smashed to bits would be too much however. One thing to bear in mind is that he did say a couple of years back is something along the lines of he "didn't know it was better for business to treat people better" and that the airline had plans to improve on a few things (it was pre-pandemic though so probably dropped), they have started to split the fleet slightly with the formation of Buzz (not the original UK one), Malta Air and Lauda so maybe we are going to see some improvement on the safety card front too - though knowing Ryanair they will use the same ones and just stick a "Malta Air" sticker on them ;)
    * Also - former air crew here (not Ryanair) and I couldn't figure out what some of those pictures meant either ;)

And minus the promise I feel like I'd absolutely agree. He goes on to clarify, most of their flights, and the only one's that'd have these standing seats, would be short flights, less than 90 minutes. The analogy of standing on busses and trains was brought up, along with "Why is the air any different." Why is a plane any different but a far safer bus?

I'm an engineer graduate of the aviation field, not currently working in aviation but a lot of my friends are and here's a secret I would like to expose. Before any flight, airlines have to run thorough safety checks and the checklist is huge. This requires a staff of engineers and technicians which requires money and basically what airlines pay for when they park a plane at an airport. Most airlines actually cut corners trying to meet time frames for flights. Some planes actually don't meet the minimum requirement to fly but airlines don't care and most engineers just sign off the flights. This is the most dangerous corner that they cut.
