Fixing sad memes using Machine Learning

It's not been the best year for smiling, so in this video I use AI to fix some of the year's angriest memes, for my own amusement. Using Photoshop's new Smart Portrait tool in Neural Filters and a Google Colab notebook based on this research paper - github.com/microsoft/Bringing....

These are the kinda photos you'd find in a photo album in an otherwise empty basement, like you walk in and find the book although a feeling of unease seems to fill this room curiosity wins over and you open to book, as you're looking at the pictures of sad and angry people that feeling of unease slowly crawls it's way up your spine and then settles down in your brain as a deep feeling if dread, you hear the door behind you close, you find that it's locked, now mortified but with nothing left to do you return to the photo album to find all these wonderfully happy faces

😂 You're not wrong! The machine learning in Photoshop works similar to Stylegan2, I believe, and looks for a similar synthetic face to start from, then the sliders manipulate axies within the latent possiblity space of synthetic faces. I think I'm doing a poor job explaining. But search Stylegan2 faces and you'll find more. The other system, Bringing old photos back to life, does image enhancement and restoration. The face enhancement part works sort of like Mr Potato head, it looks at each part of the face, eg. the left eye, then replaces it with a high detail eye it synthesises based on all the other eyes it's seen in the training data. More or less. Recommend the channel Two Minute Papers if you're interested in the topic!
