As an immigrant who came to the US 34 years ago and is now a very proud American citizen, I urge all people who want to come to the USA to do so through the proper process. This will prevent them from having to work under the table, being abused, and will help them understand and appreciate American values.
Can you explain your immigration journey? It’s not the same for everyone. Your line could have been shorter than a bunch of others. When you are in dire situations, waiting 15 years could be a death sentence.
You can walk up to the border and plead for asylum. Gov Greg Abbott is lying about the 'illegals' he sent to blue states. They were legal migrants he didn't want to be naturalized in Texas. He fears migrants will turn his red state, blue
It's the same problem Trump has with the Haitians. Haitians are not eating cats and dogs, nor does Trump care about it. Trump is worried the Haitian community will turn Missouri blue
@@EHCBunny4real illegals can't & don't vote & the politicians know this, it's just that their constituents enjoy the conspiratorial aspect of immigration rhetoric more than they care about any practical or real-life applications. opium for the masses type of thing.
Being a legal immigrant, it took me 20 years to get the citizenship. When people talk about just making illegal to legal, it shows how little they know about the immigration system.
I can imagine if you don't have money it would be tough to get help but my second wife wanted citizenship so we got a lawyer in the Asian part of LA and they were very efficient and for under $3000 she was a citizen in about 8 months. When we had appointments but we walked right in and were done in under 20 minutes every time. With paperwork it was simply "sign here". I can't imagine it being easier. She spoke English which helped a lot though so that might have made it simple. To be honest, I was surprised at just how easy it was to get her citizenship. The lawyers most definitely sped the entire process up, no doubt.
@@Gethin1978 Well I'm no racist for sure but I must say the Asians seem to be much more efficient at getting it done for a reasonable fee than many others in America. I told my Latino friends to send their people to the Asians...It's kinda like finding an honest divorce lawyer, most of them will drag it out in court to take your money but others are efficient and earn a record of fairness and performance. I got lucky but we did do research to find a good one. It's my experience that the Asians get shit done while others just talk.
I am now learning about it! I agreed to be a sponsor to my cousin's husband from China. He had gone to high school here when his father was a university researcher. He returned to go to college and met and married my cousin. The process is unnecessarily complex.

I disagree. Both Ms. Ruhle and Mr. Lomborg were partisan guests pushing their agenda. The "whataboutism" doesn't make Ms. Harris a better candidate and Mr. Lomborg a) talks about things he has no clue about "we can easily fix Tubercolosis" and b) lies through his teeth about the economic impact of climate change. 450% GDP growth over 76 year is roughly 2% per year (plus compounding effects). Costs of climate mitigation will be at 3% per year. Now let's assume it's 2% per year on average and you are looking at GDP stagnation due to climate change. From his own numbers, not mine.
The fascinating part here is Maher himself once fretted (on this show) about mass Muslim immigration to Europe. Now even the Europeans are waking up to the dangers of this.
Thanks to Putin's stooge, Angela Merkel, who thought mass migration into Europe fixes the labor shortage and relieves the suffering of war refugees from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan with all the other mix of economic refugees from India, Pakistan and elsewhere. Instead, it brought the extreme far-right into the mainstream with heavy support from the KGB followed by BREXIT and the invasion of Ukraine. Well done, Angela!

Strong point on maternal and child health. In 2023, the WHO was stating that 4.5 million women and babies die from *preventable* deaths while giving birth globally. This should be the talking point in every right thinking nation and every right thinking person anywhere on this planet. Maternity wards in every nation should have no cost of admission.
Not enough to focus on maternal and child health unless equal emphasis on life AFTER. Otherwise, a majority saved will only live to suffer starvation, disease, horrific poverty, war, etc. Just life is inadequate-quality of life must be a huge factor. Focusing on maternal and child health is as shortsighted as the alleged “pro-life party”, which only seems to care about the fetus and damn them after birth.
Did you watch the new rule that they did on gender apartheid? I think this issue is a part of that. I think we ramble on about equality and we literally seem to forget that women are out there dying over absolutely nothing. Preventable nothing. As a woman, I think that women have their focus in the wrong place. There is no point in trying to overthrowing the patriarchy. Thats just buzz word stuff. The real war here is on the ground, in the life of every woman that is walking the earth. Women have to take care of each other because no one else is going to.
YES ABSOLUTELY. Also the fact that we have the capability and resources to actually ERADICATE TUBERCULOSIS and yet we are CHOOSING not to, and therefore millions of people die every year from a preventable disease…and the disease itself is getting worse BECAUSE of our lack of consistency and resource allocation and as a direct consequence is becoming increasingly more difficult to treat - to the point where, if we continue down the path we’re on, it could one day become untreatable. This was a hugely important and serious point he brought up, and it was frustrating and disappointing to watch the others trivialize it in such a way… I was actually really frustrated watching this episode, the few times when a really important and specific point was made by someone, and the others just bulldozed over it. Like, love him or hate him, but I absolutely agree with Bret Stephens about the need for Kamala to establish and inform the American people of what her serious positions on certain things like foreign and domestic policy are. I think where Stephanie sits, the way she was addressing Bret, is going to lose Kamala voters. Personally, as an American citizen and as someone with the privilege and responsibility to vote for who I believe will be the best president of this country, I cannot simply vote against a candidate and put my trust in the other candidate by default. I also find it incredibly patronizing and insulting to be told to just put my faith in Kamala because she is a “good person” and “really cares” about the country and at least she’s not Trump. That is bullshit. Also, I don’t know that Kamala IS a good person. I believe that Obama is a good person, I disagree with some of what he did in the Middle East, but I think he is a good person who cares about the country. I believe Hillary is a good person, she has her controversies, but I believe she is a person who cares about the country. I believe John McCain was a good person, I think Elizabeth Warren might be a good person, I think John Kerry probably is a good person, I think Nikki Hayley is probably a good person too…even if they are not “good people” and are truly amoral opportunists, they have all done things which prove they are serious about the wellbeing of this country and the people of this country. Kamala has only essentially said that she cares about caring. Her entire campaign is just - she’s not Biden and she’s TOTALLY not trump, and she’s very joyful about that and we should all be happy for her for that. She has done nothing to prove to me that she IS anyone of principle. Even if she took a firm stance on something and I disagreed with that stance, I would be able to respect her as a serious political leader. As things are though, she has said almost nothing of substance, and it is not unreasonable to expect something of substance in the candidate one is giving their, in all seriousness, very precious vote to. Like, I have to have before me a candidate made of something in order to vote for that candidate. I know what Donald Trump is made of which is why I will never vote for him, but I respect this country too much and value the responsibility that comes with getting to vote for the president too seriously to just vote for the non-trump option. I cannot just vote for a warm body that isn’t trump and I don’t have to apologize for that. I’m so sick of being talked down to, I’m so sick of obvious political bias, I’m tired of the lying and disrespect, I’m tired of utter lack of even basic coherent sentences. Anyways, Bret’s point was incredibly important too, and it was absolutely ridiculous and patronizing and frankly insulting the way that he was totally shut down. That attitude, the one of condescension and sanctimony which Stephanie and Bill had when addressing Bret, is going to lose Kamala the presidency. And I’m not a hater of either of them, I’m a big fan!! This was just so disappointing, disaffecting, and frustrating to watch.
I agree completely. I don't like him on his podcast..but I love his show. I didn't know if it had to do with the writers, but it's also a more serious setting.
Great Real Time, Loved the "New Rules". Bret and Stephanie were both so vibrant, they are two of my favorite Commentators / Journalists. Thanks Bill, I would say God Bless you, but.
Except that Maher criticized people for repeating the sofa story about Vance, something I was horrified to see Maher himself do on this very show a couple weeks ago -- that was shameful and for me Walz' deliberate repetition of that statement marked the end of the era when the Democratic party had the moral upper hand and or at least was the "classy" party. I think it is a horror that this FALSE statement was knowingly repeated by a VP candidate and widely circulated in the media.
Also no wierd political gymnastics to try and rationalise a narrative of being morally right. I hate how some people gas light their righteousness. I.e. the Republicans blocked a good immigration deal because they needed the political issue for the next election cycle, but they threw the baby out with the bathwater pretending it wasn't good enough. The era of good faith negotiations and compromise is dead. Republicans only want their agenda, and we won't only see this on immigration but also abortions, tax breaks for the rich, and isolationism.

It's too much too soon, but Canada does have a very good point system for immigrants, so good the Australians copied it. Did you know it takes $150.000 to educate a kid through grade school? So many immigrants are immigrating with high school educations and many with college educations, so that's a win for Canada. Our tax dollars didn't pay for those educations, but I do believe it's too much too soon. We only have to look at the housing crisis as proof.

When in Toronto I stayed in a motel in Peter St, right near the theater, and I keep in contact with a person working in it. Anyway, she, and my brother who lives in Montreal (and has been a Canadian citizen for 40 years) both tell me that "over the past decade suburbs in Toronto have been transmogrified, to the degree that Candians are the clear minorities.) ************************************************* Brett Stephens gloats about the “innovation that immigrants bring”: Well, that might be the case with immigrants that come from some Asian countries [mainly with China, South Korea, and Subcontinental cradles [ostensibly being India] regarding those with decent educations and, perhaps, some wealth. As it turns out Brett, diplomatically concurs with this by saying the problem for Europe/Britain is with the locals becoming dispossessed by these interlopers. Tragically, when it comes to those millions of interlopers swarming into Britain, Europe and, INDEED, the US, from over a score of sociological, and economic crap heaps, ranging from the Middle East, and WORST of ALL, sub-Saharan Africa, the horrific reality is that hardly any of them could be remotely construed as beneficial. Indubitably, the severe detriments that have severely impacted upon Britain, Ireland, western Europe, and Scandinavia, from these ileducated, and unskilled interlopers is a horror to behold. With the most detrimental consequence being that the massive drug problems in these countries is due to them importing the vile subtances. The reality of affairs is that, 90 percent of all those featherless bipeds that have fled from sub-Saharan countries in Africa, and invaded Britain in the past decade have NEVER had permanent employment. For the average poor, white British who are on the waiting list for state housing have to wait a minimum of 5 years, and up to 11 years: averaging out to be 7 years, and nine months. However, if you are a black African with an education equivalent to someone in year 8 in a western country, and have neither a skill - let alone any motivation to get a job and work hard - the waiting period for a permanent council flat is within a maximum of 12 months of arriving.
IMHO if you asked the ~8 billion humans how many of them would agree to move to the west tomorrow and become citizens immediately - I would guess that half of them would say yes. Not all will actually do it for practical reasons but my point is, hundreds of millions of people would absolutely love to be citizens and have the rights of the western cultures (and Japan). But there isn't enough space for all of them - it will decimate the local communities if that was to happen. We should help them get across the line and also help them help themselves rather than left them move. But many of them don't even accept that.

It's pretty obvious that if your brakes are still working after 400K miles, then they get used at least an order of magnitude less than in gas cars, thus polluting an order of magnitude less. The beauty of Regen...
@@xaspirate8060 you got me thinking and it looks like brake dust in a combustible car is no less harmless than the ones in my model s. So when he mentioned brakes on an EV, I was like okay he seems right. Because my EV wheels happen to get more dust on them than my other car. And this is even when I apply brake cleaner on my pads every month. So after looking it up you're right and the good statistician isn't using his data truthfully. Turns out I get more dust only because of the sheer weight of the car causes a larger amount to disperse at a single time which gets collected on the wheel. Where a combustible car omits less amount at one time but so much frequently because of not having regenerative breaks. Ironically the statistician was on the show to uncover certain data points when he did the exact same thing.
Totally agree, Tesla brakes need replacement in 3-5 years. Compared to standard car would have 3-4 replacements. We have to start changing somewhere. EV cars will get better. True the mining for battery materials is not good, but everything has a cost either $, environmental or both. A bicycle, uses rubber, steel, aluminum, carbon fibre, hydraulic fluid for disc brakes. How far down should we drill to say something is bad for the environment.
Yes, but just regular brakes do. The regenerative aspect of brakes is only a portion. But, he qualified that statement by adding that all cars have that issue.
@@martinsteele3259 This is absolute nonsense. People aren't replacing brakes on normal cars annually. Jesus, the rear drum brakes on my small car are still fine a decade later (I check them annually, and the rear brakes handle only a relatively small portion of the overall braking). How often you need to replace your brakes is directly related to how frequently you drive, the weight of your vehicle, the components used, and how you drive. As mentioned, many electric car owners use their EVs as occasional, tertiary cars for short errands. ANY car not driven often will not need its brakes replaced frequently. Unless you're driving highly aggressively, entirely within a city, for very long distances, NO ONE would be changing their brakes annually. Depending on driving habits and the components, brakes can easily last over 50,000 miles for an "average" driver. Regenerative braking isn't some mystical cheat code; letting off the throttle in an automatic or simply engine braking with a manual transmission works similarly to slow a vehicle down without using the brakes by cycling the engine without adding fuel for combustion. It harnesses the friction of the moving engine to decelerate without using brakes. The only difference is that electric cars can recapture some of that energy as electricity. Internal combustion engines simply are not using fuel during that deceleration event since OBD2 has been around (~1996), so they still also save energy doing so. I have a small car with a manual transmission, so I predominantly use engine braking. Combined with the fact I mostly drive on the highway, I get well over 5 years on a set of brake pads on my front rotors, over twice that for my rear drums. Electric cars are much, much heavier than an equivalent car, so any braking that is required is still going to be proportionally greater. Regenerative braking and decelerating in gear help SLOW a vehicle, but they don't stop it in normal driving (momentum is real). In both instances, you still need to apply the brakes to fully stop the vehicle at the appropriate time to maintain a safe flow within traffic patterns.
I’m sorry but I don’t believe the ONE study in England that says brakes & tires are causing more pollution than exhausts. I need more evidence & studies that can replicate/reproduce this study’s results.
if heavy cars are causing this problem there should already be plenty of data to show it since massive stupid azz SUVs that weigh 500-1000 kilos more than a wagon/estate/touring have taken over the auto market in the past 20 years As an old BMW fanatic I despise anything with a model name starting with X (maybe slightly less if its an E53 from which I can scavenge a shared part for one of my E39s) and I keep a barf bag in the driver door pocket in case I see one of those vile new ///XM monstrosities on the road

Lomborgs claim has two problems. A) EV’s wear LESS not MORE on brake pads, thereby causing less pad dust pollution. Why? Because they mostly use regenerative braking, which unlike ICE cars does not depend upon brake pads, but instead uses the electric motor to slow the vehicle. B)Also, his claim EVs are so much more heavy is no longer true either. Battery tech has been improving rapidly resulting in EVs today being only about 15% heavier on average than the equivalent size ICE car.
@@xaspirate8060 Brett's main complaint with Trump is he would rather it be him running the country. Minus the CNN/msnbc idiot filter, Trump's policies would sound sensible.
Why does NO ONE seem to ever know this? Regenerative braking uses back-electromotive force to stop an EV without ANYTHING physically touching your brake pads until the final moment your car comes to rest. NOTHING TOUCHES the pads or discs while slowing down. Is this too hard a concept to grasp? Yes, yes it is. RB uses Newton's laws of gravity and motion to put free "gas" in your tank, and substantially extends brake pad life. Escalades are heavier than a Tesla X, are rougher on tires AND burns brake pads every time you touch the brakes - but are the American dream car for most talking heads.
He must know that. Now, I feel like he's a biased bullshitter. Very disappointing. My EV has 130k miles still haven't replaced brake pads. I almost never use the brakes.
This is true. However one must also consider their local energy mix. If you're driving an EV in Texas or CA, you're probably a net loss of carbon. If you have a Tesla in West Virginia, you're powering that car based on like 70+% coal power generation
@@danielhansen7013 Since most everyone has the choice to source their electricity from renewable sources, it doesn't matter as much what your regional grid mix is. You can either install solar yourself, if you have the roof for it, or buy RE from a third party supplier and have your utility deliver it. No one has to use dirty electricity, that is a choice.
@@danielhansen7013 Daniel, please study this further. Even EVs that run on 100% coal are cleaner than your average car. Cars are extremely inefficient in their use of energy, that ends up trumping everything and FTR our energy mix is getting cleaner every day. You must now this. Coal is now only 16% of America's power production. Even places like WY are replacing huge amounts of coal with wind.
My problem with this show: it's talking heads. Lithium is not necessarily dirty. California has a potential large reserve that would be a clean source of lithium: syphoning off the lithium from geothermal energy. The main thing about renewable energy is that you go to the energies that are good for that area (some areas in the US have a wind center, some solar, some geothermal). I'm in GA, and we just had the country's new nuclear facility. In TN, they are researching a cleaner and more efficient nuclear reactor that could usher in some more reactors in some areas.
Yes, as of all the gasoline just magically appears totally clean at the gas station. But gasoline is gone once you burned it. But the materials in batteries will be recycled to build new batteries.

EVs mostly don't use mechanical brakes. They use regen brakes which produces energy that goes back into the battery so there is way less brake dust pollution. EVs are way better for the environment even in West Virginia. If you're only car is electric and you get most of your energy from solar, there's no argument. I've been all electric since 2011 and will never buy an ICE car again.
This guy is wrong about more brake wear from electric cars because regenerative braking reduces brake pad use, and brake pads last longer on electric cars than gasoline powered cars. Also, a lot of people are driving around in huge trucks and SUV anyway, which are heavier than smaller electric cars.
I have no gas vehicles in my household, so all my miles are electric. I one pedal drive, and I rarely use my brakes so brake dust pollution is kind of over blown I think. How about we take away some of those oil subsidies and put them to battery R&D so we can get to cleaner batteries for our cars, cellphones, laptops, toothbrushes. Fyi cobalt is used in many applications in our modern world including refining oil into gas. It's used to remove impurities and make higher quality gas, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
@@vettelover695regenerative braking reduces the use & load on the brake pads, thus reducing wear The vehicle slowing-force is caused by the magnetic resistance in the generator rather than the friction between the disk & pad. First I've heard of the environmental impacts of braking though
@@vettelover695 Regenerative braking reduces brake pad wear by using the vehicle's electric motor to slow down the car instead of relying solely on the traditional friction-based braking system. In regenerative braking, the electric motor operates in reverse, converting the vehicle's kinetic energy into electrical energy, which is stored in the battery. This process slows the vehicle down without needing the brake pads to create friction against the brake discs as much. Since the brake pads are used less frequently, they experience less wear and tear, extending their lifespan.

1. Hybrids are great. Spoke to a guy who bought a hybrid and gets about fuel about once a month. 2. If we can produce Sodium Ion batteries instead of lithium. We have tons of sodium readily available.
Lithium is the 3rd most available element in the universe while sodium is the 11th most available (source: the periodic table). It’s not the availability that’s the issue, it’s how to extract lithium the right way (ie efficiently, yet environmentally friendly at scale) that makes things difficult. Look up Lithium Valley if you want to know more about this topic.
@@luke_cohen1 Hey thx for engaging and yes, I totally understand the periodic table, and the energy density of lithium vs. sodium, but sodium-ion is still emerging. If cost, safety, and environmental impact are your primary concerns, (those are my main concerns) sodium-ion batteries might be more suitable. They are advantageous for large-scale energy storage systems, such as those used in renewable energy installations. The low cost and improved safety make them a great option for grid storage and other applications where space and weight are less critical. Moreover, their better performance in cold temperatures can be beneficial for outdoor or unheated environments. In a Hybrid vehicle, where you charge your batteries using the chemical energy in your gas tank, this will drive down the vehicles cost and be less likely to overheat. And in Canada (where I am), it can get pretty cold. Thats where sodium ion batteries shine….:). Again, thansk for engaging. That's where maximum torque gets produced, and it ends after reaching maximum power, that is, above 5,000 RPM but not above 7,000 RPM. EV's don't typically have transmissions. The Vaccines where supposed to stop outbound transmission, and inbound contraction, and reduce the risk of a serious reaction. We now know what most of us already knew that all this was not true. People made billions of dollars in profit from the pandemic. A pandemic is supposed to be destructive not to a few but all. Many small business had to close down while the massive conglomerates made hand over fist as they where allowed to stay open.
The smoking gun is that air travel was not halted. One of the easiest ways to spread an air born disease is through air travel. If it was anywhere as serious as they where claiming it was they would of grounded every plane and docked every ship. That is in arguable. There is no reason that can be given to excuse this.
The mining of minerals is nothing new because of electric cars. They've been mining all those minerals used in auto batteries for over a century. They use these minerals in all sorts of other applications.
its a shame that Stephanie Ruhle, whenever Bret Stephens was critical on Harris, always tried to turn the question around to being critical on Trump, which I think most of us are. Yet Stephanie Ruhle never answered the question regarding Harris
Brett Stephens gloats about the “innovation that immigrants bring”: Well, that might be the case with immigrants that come from some Asian countries [mainly with China, South Korea, and Subcontinental cradles [ostensibly being India] regarding those with decent educations and, perhaps, some wealth.

People focus on CO2 over other environmental issues because CO2 is especially urgent. We can tackle climate change and then other issues once climate change has abated. That said, electric cars are no substitute for public transit.
@@stone-rock No, but there are cities that have adequate public transit for most hours of the day and it would be even better if more people didn’t resort to driving in the first place.

@@DInDelusion I have to admit, Bill seemed a bit aggressive toward Bjorn tonight. In the past he listened to him intently. I do like that he is one of the few who talks about pollution management. There was a time when that was a big deal. Still is.

"100% recyclable" is 100% not true at this point in time It's barely even economical at this point to disassemble a battery pack to find and replace failed cells among the many hundreds still with usable lifespan. And that's just using 99% of what's still perfectly good battery hardware. If you can invent the industrial process that can regenerate a battery at less pollution cost than making a new one, the world will love you for it (it doesn't matter even if it's not economical - governments have shown in abundance that EV subsidy doesn't have to make any fiscal sense whatsoever)
The carbon footprint of manufacturing and shipping EVs and lithium batteries around the world twice outnumbers it's benefits. Two trucks transporting lithium batteries were recently involved in crashes one in Nevada and one in California. Hazmat teams are still at the scenes weeks later in the crash in California and most likely a section of the interstate will have to be repaired from the damage the inferno has caused. Lithium battery fires can be a deadly hazard. Advancement in nuclear power and hydrogen you could produce yourself with a small generator is the real solution, but I'm afraid their will be stiff opposition from the same lobbyists who fought Obama on the alternative energy bill over 15 years ago and politicians will regulate and tax the hell out of it to make it unaffordable for everyone. Ten years ago, I was interested in solar panels on my roof, but since four people on the PUC in my purple state are restricting on how much solar power you can produce the investment in a system like it wasn't worth it. In addition, the same 5KW system would still cost me the same if not more then what I was quoted ten years ago. The propaganda around the cost of solar panels coming down is just a lie plus the verdict of how long the last and how productive they are over it's live span is still out. The price of electricity is still going up instead of all the investments made into solar fields and wind farms. Now, I'm more convinced this is all a scam and the only beneficiaries are subsidized and monopolized power companies and Tesla, Wall Street bankers and Warren Buffet who has his hands in everything.

And mining the materials for batteries is pretty much a one-off for each car with the impact of mining for all the other things (steel etc) in common with IC engined cars. Production of the fuel to put into IC engined cars is orders of magnitude worse over the life of a vehicle.
Mining lithium and cobalt is dirty unlike gas and oil which is clean as a spring meadow. Yeah right? Black is white and night is day. Yes it takes energy to make cars of all types, but EV's don't directly add millions of tons of CO2 to the atmosphere every year like combustion engines are designed to do. BTW, cobalt is being phased out rapidly as a component of EV's. Most are using lithium iron phosphate batteries which don't use cobalt at all.
There are costs and benefits to everything. The idea that electric cars only have benefits and no costs is naive. Because of the complexity it can be difficult to compare, because you are not comparing apples to apples. The environmental damage from batteries is different than from fossil fuels. Increased CO2 isn't all bad either, there has been significant greening worldwide directly linked to the increased CO2 as it is plant food. Yes there are environmental costs from the burning of fossil fuels, but there are also costs from "green" energy.
Perhaps if the Government forced companies to pay an honest wage rather than bringing in 3rd World country labour to do jobs that none of us could survive on the low wages the Industrialists are paying.
Talking about brakes on an EV… he completely ignored regenerative braking. If I understand it correctly, it doesn’t use the brakes at all, but in effect engine braking so as to recharge the batteries a bit as you slow down/lift off the gas, rendering the life span of the normal brakes almost indefinite.
This guy doesn't know shit about EVs, and like Bill, I'm skeptical of the rest of his talking points. Lots of EVs have tech built in to prevent collisions. Some of them are heavy because of the batteries, but they're not heavier than your basic ICE pickup trucks that roam the US in great abundance. Those are the real killers of climate and humans. A Tesla Model 3 weighs 3550 lbs. That's a pretty normal weight for a small sedan in this day and age. A V6 Toyota Camry weighs more. The lightest Dodge RAM is 4765 lbs, the heaviest is 6440.
You are correct as a previous owner of a 2010 Prius and a current owner of a 2015 Nissan Leaf and 2023 Chevy Bolt, I can tell you the brakes will last the life of the car. 95% of my driving is in town commuting and these vehicles work great for that. Love the no noise instant acceleration. The only problem Bill has is his lack of research. You never buy the first generation of any new technology (EV or ICE). I waited until the battery technology progressed on the Leaf so that the degradation due to heat in Louisiana was tolerable. And waited until they figured out why Chevy Bolts were catching fire. I must admit that I still own a reliable ICE Toyota Rav 4 for those long out of town trips 😊.
Bill Maher is an unserious anti-intellectual diva, who's as self-absorbed, and as self-righteous, as Trump, and as most coastal elites are. I wouldn't put much stock in what he says, but still always remain aware of those with power, and influence.
The USA has the big gates. They are wide open and there is not much wall. Walls for security are like cooking, you gotta watch, else things get ruined.
Getting oil and gas isn't dirty? Mining ores for regular cars isn't dirty? Don't forget, electric cars also means no anti-freeze, no transmission fluid, no oil changes, no oil filters....

I'm surprised the "EV Expert" did not mention that "Regenerative Braking" can stop an EV car without actually applying the brakes. He is not as informed as he makes himself to be ;)
Agreed. I rarely use breaks to stop the car. I have over 100k miles and they haven’t been replaced. He does have a point on the tires though. Not sure how much ends up in the air but they last about 60% as long as gas vehicles.
BS ALERT: the blond dude said EVs produce a lot more pollution from increased wear on brake pads because they’re heavier. Like most anti-EV horseshit flying around lately, that’s false. EVs use regenerative braking, so instead of wearing brake pads, much or most of the friction of braking is cleanly harvested to recharge the battery. That’s not pollution, that’s energy efficiency.
Hard to believe someone like Stephanie Rhule who calls herself a journalist thinks it’s acceptable for a major party candidate for president to answer no questions about where she stands in the issues. I don’t care what you think, Stephanie. I want to know where the candidates stand and if they aren’t ready to say they can’t be trusted and won’t get my vote.
The problem with that analogy is that Stephen's is already in the car. He's simply trying to advise on how to get the rest of the dogs into the car but they're so concerned with purity tests they can't even comprehend what he's saying so bill makes an analogy that is a false equivalency.
I think they're missing the point, the batteries will be recycled (96%). Try recycling gasoline once it's burned. Why talk about an issue when your panel has no clue what they're talking about. 😂
The environmental impact (regarding C02 equivalent emissions) of the birth to death cycle of an EV usually estimated to be between 2-3 times less than a ICE vehicle. I think their point is it is not nearly 0 emissions, even though many people think they are. EVs become sustainable when the grid also does, and when battery technology improves. That improvement requires investment though. And investment requires a market. Adopting EVs now, when they are not perfect, will lead to better EVs tomorrow.

Focusing on maternal and child health is as shortsighted as the alleged “pro-life party”, which only seems to care about the fetus and damn them after birth.
be careful what you wish for. 160K women dying each year means thát less stress on hospitals etc. I guess that's why they let them die.
With the overturn of Roe v Wade ... Healthcare providers are fleeing the fields.
This was a hugely important and serious point he brought up, and it was frustrating and disappointing to watch the others trivialize it in such a way…
I was actually really frustrated watching this episode, the few times when a really important and specific point was made by someone, and the others just bulldozed over it.

Our tax dollars didn't pay for those educations, but I do believe it's too much too soon. We only have to look at the housing crisis as proof.
Umm,orderly? How can you describe our immigration these last 3 years as orderly?
(*** A.S. I have been to Canada (Toronto/Vancouver/Montreal, at least), on four sojourns between 2002, and 2011. When in Toronto I stayed in a motel in Peter St, right near the theater, and I keep in contact with a person working in it. Anyway, she, and my brother who lives in Montreal (and has been a Canadian citizen for 40 years) both tell me that "over the past decade suburbs in Toronto have been transmogrified, to the degree that Candians are the clear minorities.)

Brett Stephens gloats about the “innovation that immigrants bring”: Well, that might be the case with immigrants that come from some Asian countries [mainly with China, South Korea, and Subcontinental cradles [ostensibly being India] regarding those with decent educations and, perhaps, some wealth.

Regenerative Braking doesn't create brake dust.
@@watchchimp3102 regenerative braking is 90% of the braking, at least w a Tesla hence only replace in 3-5 years

His guest Lomborg is a climate skeptic crank full of outdated misinfo.
EVs batteries are rapidly improving such that new EVs today are only 15% heavier than comparable sized ICE cars
Also his “pollution” from tires and brakes claim is bunk. EVs use brakes less than ICE cars due to regenerative braking
Then google it!
@@greebj Only in the US, where the rules are that light weight cars have to be fuel efficient but heavy ones don't. And... there IS plenty of data to show that SUVs kill lots more people than an equivalent number of smaller cars. So, a Swedish person worrying that now heavy vehicles are going to be more common in Europe makes total sense.

Electric vehicles use regenerative breaking which utilizes the break pads only a fraction of what a gas vehicles do.

Tell me how regenerative brakes reduce brake wear.

@@DeltaVxx Provided the EV has a motor or motors that are providing at least an equivalent amount of power to weight as an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicle, the reason EV's are faster is...torque. Electric motors have maximum torque instantly and maintain maximum torque while accelerating. It varies quite a bit by vehicle depending on the transmission but, the power band of an ICE or internal combustion engine is typically around 4,000 RPM. That's where maximum torque gets produced, and it ends after reaching maximum power, that is, above 5,000 RPM but not above 7,000 RPM. EV's don't typically have transmissions. The motor drives the wheel(s) (depending on how many motors the vehicle has) directly so...Maximum torque right from 1 mile per hour, all the way up to top speed. An expert on this thread could fine tune my comment but, even though Bjorn Lomborg sounded unsure, he was 100% correct. Think about how an electric drill works. You pull the trigger and the drill bit instantly turns at its top speed. It takes an EV longer to get to top speed because of the weight, friction and wind resistance but the principal is the same.
Referring to emissions from brakes on electric vehicles is what made me cringe really hard.

@@DInDelusion I have to admit, Bill seemed a bit aggressive toward Bjorn tonight. In the past he listened to him intently. I do like that he is one of the few who talks about pollution management. There was a time when that was a big deal. Still is.
Good for Bill! I also read the story about the Swedes paying them to leave. I had an au pair 30 years ago and she said they could not go topless to beaches safely anymore. Some do not assimilate.
@sharonblankenship6433 That might actually be a good thing. It isn’t that pretty TBH
This has to be the weirdest, word salad, reaction on this video! 🤪. Makes no point or sense at all. 👍
There is so much immigrant gang violence in Sweden now it is too dangerous to go to many cities. That’s why they are desperate to get rid of them.
Swedes had already started cutting back on going top less on beaches before the big immigrant waves.
Many do not.
Tonight’s new rules was much needed.
I just became a fan of Stephanie Ruhle
Electric vehicles are waaaayyy more efficient machines. Plus batteries are 100% recyclable.
It’s a scam. Sorry, you’ve been scammed.
"100% recyclable" is 100% not true at this point in time
It's barely even economical at this point to disassemble a battery pack to find and replace failed cells among the many hundreds still with usable lifespan.
@greebj Recycling is been researched/developed as the market will be huge.
In China, the biggest market for cars, about every 4th new car is electric. I guess they'll stay world leader in this technology.

The thousands of tanker trucks delivering gasoline to gas stations daily weigh a lot more than any EV.
They're doing a hell of a lot more for the American people than just transporting a single person to work or whatever. What a false equivalency.
Great discussion. i see qualities in Stephanie Ruhle I never observe on her nightly show. She's very interactive, witty, and quick on her feet. There is an impish, saucy, even naughty quality to her ripostes. Hard to believe she labored in the vineyards of Hedge funds and finance for years and her sassy side was not killed off. Bring her BACK, Bill!
So the minerals mined for phones, computers etc are that different from the minerals needed for EVs to function?
At least they are trying new ideas to immigration. I think that is a good thing. We need new ideas to tackle these problems.
I don’t think people buy an EV for $60-80 K and then don’t drive them
Talking about brakes on an EV… he completely ignored regenerative braking.
Agreed, this guy is far, far from being an expert.

The USA has the big gates. They are wide open and there is not much wall. Walls for security are like cooking, you gotta watch, else things get ruined.

4. Because The Emergency Act was in place, our Government had the right to seize their accounts until they dispersed. This was the first time it was used. Only one time was a similar act invoked-It was the former War Measures Act. The War Measures Act was used in the 1970s due to a terrorist group in Canada, who kidnapped and killed a Canadian Cabinet Minister and a British diplomat.

They were a danger to the public and to the police (RCMP). They also had a pipe bomb. One of them (of 2 charged) got an extra six months for the pipe bomb. EVs don't wear out brakes at all because they use regen braking instead. Heavier? It's not like 3 ton SUVs didn't already exist...
No he’s not- hence all of the ignorant things he says about crypto - I promise his understanding is only what he reads from a headline
8:20 the back and forth here cracked me up 😂
BS ALERT: the blond dude said EVs produce a lot more pollution from increased wear on brake pads because they’re heavier.

Bjorn saying EVs have more brake pollution shows he doesn't have any understanding of how EVs work. Tire wear, yes that is true, brake wear nope.
@DInDelusion I agree with you wholeheartedly but that wasn't the question asked. The reply was weak or even misleading.
Everything produced has an environmental impact and I understand that.
