It's time for my Modern Horizons III set review! In this video I give my thoughts on every multicolored and colorless card in the set.
What my grades mean:
I use a letter grade system, and my grades usually fall into a bell curve (Very few A’s and F’s, lots of C’s.)
A - Bombs that are always your first pick, they completely warp the game in your favor, and they easily pull you into their color(s). You always first pick these. These are cards you are ecstatic to have in your deck. Most sets have 15-20 of these. Tend to mostly be Mythics or Rares, though sometimes an Uncommon gets there.
(Unstable Glyph Bridge, Zoetic Glyph, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal)
B - Premium removal spells and highly efficient creatures, often worth first picking. Still strong enough to pull you into their colors, but not quite as game or draft warping as A’s are. These are cards you feel good about having in your deck, and you would play several copies of most of them. Mostly Uncommons and higher, but there are usually 5-10 commons that get there too.
(Oltec Cloud Guard, Inverted Iceberg, Join the Dead)
C - Filler. These are cards you neither feel good or bad about having in your deck. You play them if you’re in their colors, but they don’t tempt you to go into their color at all. Usually includes reasonably efficient creatures, good combat tricks, and removal spells. These appear at all rarities, but are most frequently Common. (Ironpaw Aspirant, Brackish Blunder, River Herald Guide)
D - Playable in an emergency. These are cards that you don’t feel so good about playing, but in a pinch, sometimes you just have to play them. These are often inefficient vanilla creatures or overly narrow cards. These appear at all rarities. (Frilled Cave Wurm, Glowcap Lantern, Seeker of Sunlight)
F - Unplayable. These are cards that you should never play. There are very few of these in modern Limited formats, but they do appear at all rarities, with the most usually appearing at Rare and Common. These are cards whose effects are pretty much useless or overly narrow. (The Enigma Jewel, Canonized in Blood, Hit the Mother Lode)
There are two categories of cards that I give two grades to: Build Arounds and Sideboard Cards.
Build Around: These are cards that need special synergy to be at their best - synergy that won’t just come naturally. For these cards, I give one grade indicating how I think the card will perform in a typical deck of that color, and another grade if you manage to get there on synergy. (Gargantuan Leech, Terror Tide, Throne of the Grim Captain)
Sideboard Cards: These are generally cards that are Ds or Fs in your mainboard, but can perform much better out of the sideboard - at least as a C or higher

I don't think so. Eye of Ugin is still banned, and Eldrazi Winter wasn't a big mana deck- it was aggro. If Eldrazi become prominent again, it won't be as an aggro deck.

theres so many returning mechanics. Annialator, adventure, dredge, devoid, landfall, threshold, phyrexain mana, improvise, kicker, flashback, cycling, 2 sided lands, prowess, extort, like holy hell.
It's Modern Horizons. It's to be expected.

For sure, I think the rg signposts are both the best sign post at their respective rarities by a significant margin. The common ones just a casual 2 mana 4/5 with upside. The uncommon one I can easily see being better than pretty much allt he rares and mythics it's that cracked.

I really wish you would organize the multicolor cards by color combination. It's really hard to keep the context of which other cards might be relevant for each one.
I like the way this set is looking. Despite its absurd power for constructed, I feel like this will be a really high skill limited where synergy decks and smart play will matter way more than opening bombs. You could get carried in OTJ and MKM, especially with the set boosters providing tons of extra rares. I don't think the top bombs in this set will be on the level of Izoni or Bonny Pall
The Eldrazi Sphinx can freeze lands so it's never without targets. 😈
Shifting woodland is not only a creature land, it’s a planeswalker, enchantment and a 1 turn saga land too

This video is great, and much smoother/more polished looking than your prior set reviews. Congrats on that!
My only critique is that I kind of wish the grade was on screen slightly longer, so maybe you could make it appear sooner so you don't increase the video's length?

Kudo could really be a recking ball against some deck. it seems like it could be fun.
While it's not wrong to refer to two color pairs (such as when speaking about energy or modify) it's good to note that this was built on trios. So it's not so much that UR, WR, UW are Energy pairs (though technically correct) but that Jeskai is the Energy trio.

I think the MDFC duals are gonna be taken significantly higher than C+/B- as you put most of them. You can take them if you’re in either color since they’re hybrid mana. The fact that they’re fixing, keep your colors open, AND MDFC lands makes me think they should be picked at like a B+ level.

I am so glad to see more "Kindred" cards.
The argument's against the card type never made any sense to me.
My only problem with it is that it should just be a super type and not a card type. It makes little sense as an actual type.
@NizzahonMagic The reason it's a card type is that for a card to have a subtype, it needs to have a card type that can have that subtype. For example, a creature like Gingerbrute needs to be an artifact to have the Food type, since Food isn't a creature type. Kindred is a card type that can have creature subtypes. It's clunky, but I think they just didn't want to rewrite the rules on types.

Will Vexing Bauble counter the Moxes and if so what can it do in vintage?
Yep, it does do that.
It looks like a problem with it in Vintage is that it counters your own free spells unless you keep a mana open to sac it if needed
Scurry of Gremlins makes GREMLIN tokens not Goblin tokens so it would not work with Goblin synergy. Side note, how much Gremlin support do we have already/
I don't think the necrobloom is very good. Sure, it creates one chumpblocker every other turn, but unless you have some way of capitalizing of these talking, you're looking at a 2/7 that mostly just defensive and is complicated to cast. It's probably needs a build around grade.
Concerning “Invert Polarity”: When would just raw countering be the better option? I would think you would literally always prefer to seize control of their spell, and countering is just the “oh well, not that bad” alternate outcome.
You don't always have another target.
But you're right, 99 percent of the time it doesn't matter.

Symetrical effects like boardwipes also come to mind, although not so much in limited.
Glaring Fleshraker is absolutely bonkers, like stupid broken if you can get multiples on the board. Went 7-0 on a colorless deck with multiples, won almost all games on fleshraker pings.

Looks like they are giving a lot of support to Dr. Madison Li from the Fallout set.
Cranial ram deserves a build around grade, I think. Totally busted if artifacts are open
I dare someone to watch this video and count the amount of times he says the word “so”!
39:32 that's so bad lol, you have to have at least 3 artifacts you are willing to tap for this to be useful, so in total you are tapping two lands and 3 artifacts to reduce the cost by one.
I belive you underestimate the landscapes. They are able to produce colorless themselves which is relevant in this format after all.
I said as much in the video. C+ includes that functionality
@@NizzahonMagic i guess c+ is fair enough for color(less)fixing. It just didn't sound like it.
I am very surprised you gave Imskir such a high grade. as you said for many other cards, this set just doesn't have an artifact theme, and you don't even really have any good common that can make tokens like clues or treasures. Most of the time he's just going to be a 5/5 for 6 that draws 1, and that just seems terrible in a set this pushed, especially because often it won't even be that. You can't even build around it, the set has just a couple of playable artifacts. I don't see it being above a D.
Black-Red is an artifact deck. There are enough to support the archetype.
If you cast a dual-faced card, does it count as both types in the graveyard? What if you mill/discard it?
While i dont know all the rules, its for the most part like this:
If you can play/cast a card from any zone both sides are counted.
For any effect that says things like "return a land from gy to hand" msfc-lands dont work as only the frontside is checked.
I might have mossed something but that's the gist of it.
i feel like cards like nullkite and nulldrifter should be evaluated as red and blue cards respectively
Idol of false gods is ANY Eldrazi dies, and since there are so many eldrazi you can easily get to 8 counters
I know it's any. It still won't be easy in Limited. Getting 8 of anything in Limited is pretty challenging.
I suppose you could play Kudo with Elesh Norn and call it a day. That's about as good as it gets, lol.
might want to mention that the devoid monocolored cards won't be here even though they are technichally colorless =)
They are colorless in terms of color, but not in terms of identity. I don't think anyone will be very surprised not to see them here.
I was eating so I thought it caused me to miss Ulalek since he is multicolored and colorless but apparently no Ulalek?
Arena of glory is C+?? Cost of adding it to the deck is minimal, and with all the annihilator eldrazi running around I'd never relax staring down it across the board... Seems at least a B for me

Well yeah, you'd have to equip it if that's what you had. But it enters with a -1/-1 counter, which is a modification.
32:32 - "...The times you can't immediately buff your board with [Scurry of Gremlins] are going to feel pretty bad."
Those times are the times when you have exactly 0 or 1 creatures in play, which seem like they'd feel bad even if the card always immediately buffed the board, and even in those cases you can still buff the board if you have any spare energy around. I'm not convinced the possibility of not immediately buffing the board is a noteworthy downside with that card.
This is not to say I believe you undervalued the card, only that I don't find the specific argument you chose to use against it convincing
Correct me if I'm wrong but can't Disruptor Flute be cast as Mana Leak for two generic mana?
A spell on the stack has already been cast, its cost already paid for

Horizon sets seem bent on flushing out favorite, but limited creature types, like from and the gomophs.
You know .... Golden Tailed Trainer doesn't have a limit on how much it reduces the casting cost to. So you could end up casting equipment for free.

Its a deck of 99 (or 98 if you have 2 cards in the comnandzone) + your commander(s)

This reiterates my statement of 99 card FORMAT. But, I understand that ignorant people can’t read. Also, you are still wrong. Commander is a 100 card format in which your commander is considered part of the deck, making it a 100 card DECK. When you begin the game, you remove your commander from your deck and place it in the command zone. It doesn’t matter how many commanders you have- they are ALL part of the deck.
