It's funny hearing cloudpost get a "soft no" when 12 post won cardmarket's best deck in the history of modern bracket (beating eldrazi winter in the finals) effectively without a sideboard
Dread Return has been downshifted to Common and has found success in Pauper in the One Land Spy decks in that format. I could see Return getting an unban with the multitude of graveyard hate spells in Modern as well as the fact that Force of Negation is a response to it.
Had to watch in segments due to time. I'm not a modern player myself but lived this. You gave me good insight on how modern plays. I knew the fury ban reasoning and cards like KCI and mox Opal. What i didn't understand was banning pod (a strategy i live using in EDH).
Living end is actually really good against hypergenesis. When hypergenesis was the best deck living end was created to combat it because living end is really just an instant speed board wipe that gets around indistructable with upside. And even better after your opponent has emptied their hand with big threats.
God, mental misstep was never not one of the dumbest cards ever printed. I have a real soft spot for phexian mana, since I started during the scars block, but it’s a really dangerous mechanic overall, as 2 life really isn’t an equivalent for 1 mana.
Another interesting way to "fix" glimpse is to make it an ETB rather than a cast trigger. "Creatures you control own have 'When this creature enters the battlefield, draw a card' until end of turn." Or you could limit when to play it "You can only play Glimpse of Nature if: your opponent took damage this turn/as your second spell this turn/in your post combat main phase/ while eating a banana" etc. Or give it a good ol Serra Avenger nerf. Additionally, you could increase the mana cost, but... Make it 10 mana, but 9 are phyrexian colorless Make it 1 mana to cast, but you must pay life/mana per draw Must sacrifice a creature to cast Up the cost but give turn 4 options, ie G5+ delve Anywho, back to sleep.
An ETB trigger is significantly more powerful than a cast trigger. It's not like you're going to counter all the Elves in a Glimpse turn. But now it counts tokens and creatures blinking and entering from various places (which often involve no mana).
For hypergenesis, you could make it so that if you cast it with non suspend methods it gets countered. This is a change that doesn't change what it does but prevents it from being cast through cascade.
30:35: The biggest problem I've seen with Mox Opal is that it fixes broken mana bases so that players don't need to dedicate card slots to doing that. My proposed change would eliminate (or minimize) the manafix while retaining the properties as shown of a mox. Mox Opal - (0) Legendary Artifact Metalcraft - (⤵): Add (◇), or one mana of any color a non-land artifact you control could produce. Activate this ability only if you control three or more artifacts.
For Top I'd combine it's abilities into one, more commital, option that you can't (or don't want to) do every turn, and certainly can't do multiple times per turn. Have it pull three cards off the top of your deck, add SDT to the three, then you put one card into your hand and three back on top of your library in any order. It still doesn't net you any cards since it has to put itself onto your library in order to give you anything but itself, but it effectively costs 2 mana to 'check' now (since you have to play it and activate it every time), and you can't repeat it during the opponents turn. Add entering tapped to slow it down if needed.
I think it may be okay if the activation costs are just swapped. The major problem with top are the multiple activations of the peek ability, which would be impossible if you tap to activate. In that case the draw needs something like put Top second from the top of your library, if you do, draw a card, so you can´t just have (X): draw X-1 cards and return Top to your hand.
There are a few problems in your assessments, in my opinion (as someone whose expertise is in Modern because it's the only format I cared about playing) -Twin wasn't about being a turn earlier than Kiki-Jiki. Twin RARELY would go off on turn 4. It was a tempo deck first and foremost. It would run out your resources through tempo and control, and then it would combo. The deck has more tools and toys to play that tempo game in Unholy Heat and Counterspell proper. Twin is a soft maybe. -Pod can't come off the list right now because of cards like Omnath, Siege Rhino (the card that's responsible for it being banned), and Questing Beast. It also has new toys that make it combo faster. Corridor Monitor makes it a HARD no. That makes a whole turn cycle faster. WotC also said that they wanted to create better creatures, and they have. -P Fire is easily one of the worst cards on the banlist as of right now. Even with Fury being banned, x/1 and x/2s aren't very prevalent, and graveyard hate is prevalent in almost every deck in the format, through maindeck or sideboard. It wouldn't be near oppressive. Playing Grove is not free in a majority of decks either, where it's hit by various Moons, and it's a liability in life gain, where having to use two or more in a turn negatively offsets any upside. -Jitte is absolutely not a problematic card anymore. Legacy D&T stopped playing it because it's really not worth playing anymore. Just because it sway combat doesn't automatically mean it'll ruin. Removal has gotten a lot better, and even with Fury gone, it doesn't impact things as much. No deck in the format wants a Jitte, unless it's like Hammer for the sideboard. Even coming in off of a Stoneforge, it's a 4 mana investment. The card just isn't up to snuff for Modern anymore. -KCI was banned not just for rules complexity and time, but also in how hard it was to interact with the card, since Pithing Needle and Sorcerous Spyglass can't interact, and even Split Second doesn't deal with it (Krosan Grip) because Mana Abilities are free from the Split Second ability restrictions. It became a whole format of playing around the deck, and things like Surgical Extraction and even Extirpate couldn't stop it because of triggers. I agree with a majority of the statements made, but some of these needed to be addressed or added.
Hey! 2nd place Zur here. Awesome video, glad you thought the deck was cool and I'm hoping that more people give old man Zur a chance! I mostly had OoT in as a board clear for emergency situations. I did take it out replacing it with a much needed counterbalance. Also took out Lavinia, honestly more hurt than help but eh, what can you do lol. You live and you learn.
I think it’s important to mention that the elves deck gains an INCREDIBLE amount of resources from its combo, so even if it doesn’t combo kill you, just the card advantage they gain off glimpse gives them a real fair plan AND the option to combo. Both together is very scary. Making misstep be 1 phyrexian + 1 mana absolutely and totally kills the card. Minor misstep exists and that card is not good. 2 phyrexian blue could be an option - removes the “I play misstep to counter my opponents missteps” issue, and 4 life starts to be a more serious cost. I think the best fix to jitte is requiring it to be equipped to activate abilities. Being able to just remove counters to kill something doesn’t make much sense and is a nice nerf Depths also isn’t a close unban afaik. Most modern no banlist tournaments have quite a few depths decks making good finishes. The issue is how much discard you get access to, and how easy it is to assemble the combo alongside it multiple times I think something really interesting about treasure cruise is not just that “blue decks would be too good”, it’s that “decks would warp themselves to splash blue just for treasure cruise”. It just is that good and is universally applicable. Important part of looting in decks that aren’t all in on the graveyard is that the 3 mana mode is AMAZING for later in the game - it turns lands you don’t need into spells in your hand.
Another thing about once upon a time is that it kinda made decks more consistent by going around the minimum of 60 cards in once deck rule, ofc it does count towards it, but as its free and gives you a selection over what youd draw from it, it felt like playing a 56 card deck instead sometimes, which imo is broken af!
I disagree with the notion that Dark Depths cannot be unbanned. There are a lot of ways to deal with Dark Depths currently present in the format. Channel Boseiju, targeting the Dark Depths. Cast Solitude Petty Theft Prismatic Ending the token Proactively play Blood Moon/Magus of the Moon Channel Otawara, targeting the Marit Lage token Even One Ring can give you a whole turn. A 20/20 isn't much scarier than anything else when One Ring loops are just making combat irrelevant. I'm not saying that the deck would be weak. It still is close. But the means of dealing with the deck are already all over the format.
I think the lack of a Swords-level card outside of Solitude in modern is probably the tipping point-if there were one more good cheap instant that could remove it, perhaps.
@@laurelkeeper Reasonable enough points. I can extend the idea that perhaps the hold out (other than cards not getting unbanned unless it would be a net positive) is the lack of one more swords-like instant. I really do think it's close though. But you might be right.
I'm loving this, now seeing the spoilers and leaks of Modern Horizons 3. The reasons some of these are banned are plastered on so many cards coming out soon
Not sure if this is doable in the rules, but as to how to theoretically fix Hypergenesis without ruining the intent of the card: "If this spell was cast from exile while one or more time counters were removed from it this turn, starting with you, etc. etc. etc." That way, unless you are doing some hyper-specific interaction that I can't think of off the top of my head, the only way to cast Hypergenesis is either through its native suspend ability or with something that exiles it with time counters like The Tenth Doctor or Delay. Not even Alaundo the Seer would let you cheat the card with his ability because no time counters are being put onto the card, so you'd never be able to "remove the last time counter" and cast it.
I think an easy way to fix Hypergenisis is adding a clause, that it´s effect only happens if it was suspended. I don´t know how to template it from the top of my head, but I´m fairly sure, it would be problematic to fit in the textbox.
Misstep could say; U; you may cast this w/out paying its mana cost if you control a basic island. That would fix a lot about what’s broken about it. No turn zero counters and could only play it in blue heavy decks and make them play some fair lands in their mana bases to run the card. Do I get the job wizards?? Wizards??
I would like to see WotC give Modern a restricted list. For example, I think the Mirrodin artifact lands would be fine to use if limited to one per deck.
I would be interested in seeing them reverse the tops abilities costs, but even then a free order 3 every turn for 1 mana is a card I'm super unsure about. Has Wizards considered limiting the amount of cards able to be played for stuff like the Artifact Lands? Like you're restricted to only 1 of each specific colour of artifact land? That way they're still all "unbanned" but still limited in the amount in a way.
So Fury and Up the Beanstalk have been banned, and Preordain was unbanned - idk if three cards are enough to make a video out of, but it might be worth doing.

Mental Misstep Fix would make the card unplayable. We already have Minor Misstep and the card doesn`t see any play, which mental misstep would be a worser edition most of the time
Glimpse of Nature could ask for G for every card already drawn with that effect during the current turn, so that it become increasingly costly (not including infinite kana combos, of course)
One of the recent 1k no ban modern tourneys was basically two yorion pile decks 1st and second place with uro, omnath, field of the dead, then elves, the rhino deck and artifacts. Most of these playing deathrite shaman and oko as well. The meta in that tourney was kinda interesting to read tbh

Eye of ugin and GSZ seem pretty big in that deck.
An incredibly flashy finish too, won by endlessly mentoring in Emrakul with eye of ugin, sacrificing it with the legend rule and taking infinite turns
Is eldrazi winter even the scariest opponent to test against nowadays though? Modern has power crept quite a bit from those days.

In the video, ( 1:15:16) you said valakut would me far too much.
Why not just make chrome mox etc count as a land drop for that turn?
Can someone explain the point of ponder to me? You stack the top of your deck but then shuffle it? Doesnt that defeat the point
I feel like glimpse decks would just be destroyed by scam and beans
