    Carb addiction is real. I know how it feels to walk around the kitchen looking for carbs or sweets, restraining myself while can't stop thinking about food. It's frustrating and skinny people just casually talk about damn moderation. LCHF and the fasting community is the only safe place in the world when it comes to food

      I totally agree with your statement of looking for carbs in the kitchen. I was once one of those skinny people who never dealt with carb addiction. Somehow I got into carbs and I am an addict now. I put on over 50 lbs in a few years and I’m struggling to eliminate this demon from my life to get back to where I need to be. I apologize to everyone for not realizing what people are going through with carb addiction. Hopefully I can get back to where I need to be and beat this addiction.🙏🏻

    This is the most powerful statement in my four month keto/paleo/IF healthspan journey. "If you don’t eat carbohydrates, calories and
    portion sizes become irrelevant!" So true!

    • @GlenGoesOutdoors
      @GlenGoesOutdoors 4 года назад +19

      While I don't disagree with the statement - it's important to note he states "BECOME irrelevant" (emphasis added) not that they "ARE irrelevant".
      Some think keto means that calories/portion-sizes ARE irrelevant - which simply isn't true. If we eat - even keto - to excess, we won't lose (and could still gain) weight. There are some who eat as a form of self-harm - they need additional help via counselling/therapy, not just diet. There are also some (incredibly small, rare subset of people) who simply do not get the satiety signals that most of us do - those rare individuals may need to watch portions/calories.
      Also, it's important to realize that the satiety signals aren't immediate. If we eat too fast, some may overeat *before* they receive that signal. (Some folks are just not capable of eating fast ... some of us - like me - can eat WAAAY to fast, LOL.) It's important to chew your food (aids digestion) and eat at a reasonably slow pace, imho.
      While, over-time, properly eating a VLCKD (very-low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet) will allow those signals to prevent us from over-eating, it doesn't happen right away and it doesn't happen for everyone.

I would also eat straight sugar cubes, like a junkie. Those are my earliest memories of craving sugar. Very true.I always wandered why I could binge eat 2000 calories worth of cookies and chocolate in one "meal" and still not feel any fuller compared to the moment when I started eating the first cookie.This video offers the answer:because carbs don't have a feedback control and do not stimulate the release of leptins.Our brain doesn't count calories,only we do.And then we wonder why calorie restriction diets don't work!

      Why does this makes so much sense? Because I experienced the same exact thing as you did. Is impossible for me (or anyone for that matter) to overeat on saturated fat and protein (such as eggs, steak, etc). But I can eat way more sugar and starches (especially bread and corn chips). And yeah, is the carbs that matter more than calories. Calories are meaningless.

    Love it. I'm a sober alcoholic and THIS I get. Why isn't this information EVERYWHERE? I've been carnivore for the last several months, and I've lost a friend or two over it :( When I told one friend we never needed to eat another carb again as long as we live, he screamed at me and sent me "proof" that I'm wrong (he's carb addicted to the point of an eating disorder.) After another friend questioned me about fiber, I told her it wasn't necessary and she bent over laughing and told me I needed to see a doctor (she is sick constantly). Doctors and/or nutritional "experts" should be prosecuted for the harm they are doing. Just stop the friggin carbs already. I look and feel fantastic by the way :) I'm 55 and look 35... I do not get sick and my mental health is outstanding. This was not always the case. Yay meat.

    I like his thinking that we don’t have a feedback mechanism for carbs because they are not essential. He explains why we get addicted to alcohol because of feel-good receptors in the brain. I believe the reason we get addicted to carbs is that the through eating lots of sugary and starchy foods we have cultivated gut bacteria that tell our brains that we need sugar to feed them.

    This makes so much sense. I have watched a couple of other doctors preaching carnivore diet but I could not clearly understand why the body craves for sugar when it is such a toxic. Your explanation makes sense to me. I have been eating mostly meat and eggs in my diet, but whenever I added more carbs back to my diet due to craving my belly fat would come back very fast. Then I would try go back to eating meat and eggs only to lose the weight. However my biggest concern when it comes to food is not the carbs but the vegetable oils and food additives they put in your food. MSG is everywhere because it makes your body crave for more food. Recently I learned that they use creamer instead of milk in many boba tea shops, and I saw places that use creamer/fake creams to make deserts like crème brûlée. It is simply impossible to eat out and what I can buy at grocery store is very limited.

    I appreciate the information in this video. Thank you, Dr. Cywes. I am left with two questions:
    1) I can relate to the addiction and lack of feedback with simple sugars, but my body does indeed feel very satiated for many hours after, say, a bowl of oatmeal.
    2) It is hard for me to ignore how fit and healthy plant-based eaters look. I'm not talking about the vegans who can gorge on potato chips, but people who eat wholesome foods, which, along with leafy greens, include whole grains, like wild rice, quinoa, etc.
    Would appreciate reader's thoughts. Thank you in advance.

      I was a "healthy" vegan for 5 years after 12 years as a vegetarian. I ended up t2 diabetic which has been reversed by a low carb lifestyle.
      Vegan food is almost all carbs: beans/rice/bread/pasta/potatoes, soy; etc. And I was one of the "healthy" vegans too! Whole grains, etc.
      I never thought vegans looked healthy.

I myself am very strict with my own eating ( no carb creep) and If I eat too much real food which is all I eat I do gain weight.. not to argue but I don’t buy that theory.

    I love what you said here and how you explained it. I do have a question. You mentioned the basis of the keto diet being not eating carbs, but the keto diet does include carbs although limited. Wouldn't it be more correct to say the carnivore diet is the diet that most contains only "food" (fat and protein)?

    • @gwenscott535
      @gwenscott535 5 лет назад +5

      Insulin is produced in response to different foods, so by changing your diet, you can minimize insulin production. That's the point of a ketogenic diet.
      The carbs that are consumed on keto are exiremely low glycemic index foods. Many people do not see greens and non starch vegetables as carb, so while you are right , you are also being anal.

    • @jillherrmann1918

      Anyone who says all carbs are the same and that all carbs are not food is not worth listening to. He's got it wrong on so many levels. Not all sugars have the same metabolic affect in the body. To say all carbs are the same is ridiculous. You asked a good question. People who can't answer it intelligently will say you are being anal. Before insulin, some doctors were curing diabetes with sugar. Sugar has been villified because it can and does have a healing effect and Big Pharma would lose a lot of customers and $$. Anyone who says sugar by itself causes obesity and diabetes is not worth listening to, they have no clue how the human body works.

    This was an excellent explanation of why we crave carbs. The example of water vs alcohol and homeostasis was a great example. I never stopped to wonder why I craved a Kit Kat bar vs a steak. Also, knowing we don’t need carbs as food made sense. I have always eaten a basic diet of carnivore and some vegi’s. My labs were always right on point. I maintained a healthy weight without effort. When I was 53 I lost my best friend/nephew to addiction. The grief destroyed me and I became a sugar addict and gained at least 40 lbs. I worked with a therapist on the grief, acupuncture, forcing myself to move. I lost some of the weight and consulted a nutritionist who utilized the ADA diet. And guess what? I gained weight. I am now stuck at a plateau. With this new information I have a new understanding why any carb is now a trigger. I am committed to getting back to my baseline and this information helped. 😊

    You use the word starch/carbohydrate alternatively, and mention keto as a healthy diet, but even in keto there's a limit to how much, say cauliflower, we can eat. I love oven roasted cauliflower with olive oil, and can eat at least a whole one at one sitting. But that's over 20 net carbs by itself. I think the diet that fits your self-regulating parameters is the carnivore diet. And you seem to suggest this in your example of how someone can't get fat by having limitless meat in front of them.

    I’m a ketogenic diet specialist and I believe we are on the same team here but we cannot lump together whole food carbohydrate sources from nature with pizza and donuts. Carbohydrates are real food. Potatoes, beans, rice, fruits- these are not the enemy. We have to be so careful in the delivery of this message because people become carbophobic and develop terribly unhealthy relationships with food.

      Its not an "irrational, uncontrollable fear" (phobia) to recognize that I have an irrational and uncontrollable drive to continue to eat carbs, even after being satiated by a large meal? I am Irish and cannot drink alcohol due to a heart problem, so sugars became my "drug". Would you call sober alcoholics alco-phobic and consider them THEN to have an unhealthy relationship to alcohol?

      @@HeyStranger138 It's not the same, try eating 3 big oranges, I guarantee you can't, and it's because of the fiber. At the same time, try drinking 1 l of orange juice, packed with sugar - you'll have no problem doing that, since it's pretty much liquid sugar. (the difference is the fiber) never wondered why asian and african people are slim, even though they are not eating stake and pork rinds 3x per day and have tons of carbs instead? It's because of the fiber, again. They eat whole grains and lots of legumes. You also need fiber in your diet and if you don't get it (there is none in meat), you'll end up with bowel/colorectal cancer, hemorrhoids and lots of other diseases.
      Excess of anything is bad and let's not forget that keto was first developed as a treatment for epilepsy, so not quite something sustainable in the long term.
      I am a sugar addict, that's why I am here and while I am thankful for the information from this channel, I will never do keto, as that's just another extreme. Plus I throw up if I eat too much fat or meat, my digestion slows down drastically and I get pretty bad acne. Red meat is labeled as a 2A grade carcinogen by the IARC, so I'm not surprised by my body's reaction to it.
      I did manage to cut simple carbs for a while now and have complex ones, veggies/fruits instead and I never wanted to eat tons of those either. Lost weight easily, labs are amazing, skin looks great and I feel good.

Her faces became confused and she told me that was not possible since she would not be able to diagnose it. She explained that it was not in "the book". She then explained what "the book" was. I asked her if it was possible even though it was not in her book. She explained that while anything is possible, she could not professionally tell me that it is a possible diagnosis.
