- A short sound comparison between the SONY PCM-D100 the ZOOM H5. I think it will be interesting for you to hear the difference between them :) Both recorders are set the exact same way (48kHz, 24bit , rec level set to 5/10 on both and of course they are positioned on the same place). Let me know in the comments which one you prefer! :)
I chose some short outtakes from four pieces:
0:10 - Zoom H5 | Beethoven Moonlight Sonata
0:59 - Sony PCM-D100 | Beethoven Moonlight Sonata
1:49 - Sony PCM-D100 | Bach - Allemande from the 2nd French Suite
2:24 - Zoom H5 | Bach - Allemande from the 2nd French Suite
3:01 - Sony PCM-D100 | Schumann - "The Smuggler"
3:37 - Zoom H5 | Schumann - "The Smuggler"
4:18 - Sony PCM-D100 | Liszt - Faust Symphony
4:42 - Zoom H5 | Liszt - Faust Symphony
5:14 - Sony PCM-D100 | Liszt - Faust Symphony

Came for the comparison, but was blown away by the playing 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks man! :))
SO INTERESTING!!!!! Thank you for these excellent performances of my favourite composers, such an amazing comparison, I think the sound of the Sony is better, but in general both are very good, btw. congratulations for 46.000 subscribers to your great channel. This week I'm busy, because in my country Poland all schools and colleges will be open, but probably for a short time due to the coronavirus-already over 68.500 people. What is the situation in your country Bulgaria(???). As always my best wishes from Poland, have a happy day.
Thank you very much Joanna! :) As for the corona virus.. we are somewhat stabilized for the moment thankfully :) Hope the same for your country too! :)
@@StanislavStanchev again thank you for your interesting comparison, already two times I've heard your recording and I prefer the sound of the Sony. Btw. In your country Bulgaria the situation is stabilized (I mean the coronavirus). Are you planning soon your concert-probably the Faust Symphony by Liszt(???). Again all the best from Poland, have a nice day.
@@joannawronska4100 Thanks Joanna! :) We applied for a date for the concert and hopefully it will be October/November. Let`s wait and see haha :D On the side note.. the better the headphones/speakers.. the better the Sony gets :))
@@StanislavStanchev I'm looking forward to your concert in Bulgaria, although probably it will be in October/November, btw. my headphones/speakers are not of very good quality unfortunately, again good luck and warmth from Poland!
Get what you pay for. Thanks for making this clear demo. I'll be sure to send it to my film/video maker friends who always think "ZOOM is fine. No need for expensive audio gear"
I am glad the video was helpful :)
Hm, interesting. I am surprised that most people in comments peefer the Sony. First of all there is a difference in level, Sony is much louder and for a fair comparacing the level of the sound should be the same. And in my opinion in this particular recordings Zoom has a much better detailization and much better sound separation, while the Sony sounds a bit messy. Great playing!
Thank you very much! I did a fast video with both recorders set on the same gain levels :) I agree it should have been on the same sound level but I didn't test things before to see that the Sony is more sensitive. Also I can say that the Sony has absolutely zero hiss noise which for me is a total win :) Best wishes!
@@StanislavStanchev Yeah, that's true btw. I was adjusting the levels to be the same and noticed that hiss on Zoom. That's really nice of Sony, also visually sonny looks pretty epic :)
Sony sounds much better but Zoom isn’t bad at all for such an affordable digital recorder. That being said, your magnificent playing would sound great even on the cheapest recording machine there is! I thought I would buy a Zoom or a Tascam recorder to use with my Hammond B3 but I might consider buying a Sony. Thank you for that enlightening comparison video.
Yes, I agree :) And thanks! :)
Wow, the Sony wins hands down. Captures the personality of the instrument and your playing!
Nice comparison ! thx !
Besides Sony's better quality of microphones, the Zoom has another defect: a sensible "Wow" issue: you can hear it better in longer kept notes.
Piano is the "recording killer" in my opinion, the final proof that reveals hidden problems
Thank you as well! :) And yeah.. piano is the hardest instrument to record in my opinion :) Best wishes!
The Sony has won for me here, but it is important to note that, atleast in my country (Germany), you can buy the Zoom h5 for 230€ and the Sony PCM-D 100 for around 600. The h5 costs less than half than the Sony. If you are a student just trying to make some piano videos for fun on yt the h5 will definitly suffice, but if you have more professionel standards you should probably go for the Sony.
I agree completely :)
The Sony definitely has a richer sound. The low end is a lot clearer and it seems to ceptures dynamics more too overall
This is due to the XYH-5 microphone capsule that comes with the Zoom H5. The XYH-5 is designed to record very loud sounds up to 125 dB, so the capsule may be less sensitive. With the XYH-6 or MSH-6 microphones capsules there will be much better results.
Hello Stanislav, did you try a comparison between one of these two recorders... and the Tascam DR-100?
I don`t have the Tascam, so I can`t make such a comparison. But i have tried it and I like it better than the Zoom :)
Wow!! Both are good, but I prefer Sony PCM - D 100!!❤👏👏
Same here Tania! :)
Wow great play man! just bought myself a used D100 couldn't wait for it to come
You will enjoy it very much I am sure! :) And thanks!
Hi Stan, I was wondering, if you see this, what recording volume level for the Sony PCM-D100 do you use? (For the volume dial on the right side of the device)?
Hi! For pieces that are more or less piano to mezzo forte the dial is at 4. If the pieces are forte and above.. the dial is on 3 :)
@@StanislavStanchev Thank you so much! I was playing around with this and had tried recording myself at volume of 10 (it was the wrong move. )
@@FelixMendelssohnTheCat Hah yes, I did the same mistake the fist time :D
D100 smashing it a lot even by even listening without headphones. But wait... we are comparing a $500 difference. I used to own H5 and it's a good and small field 24-bit recorder that served the purpose.
Thanks for this comparison, but I noticed the Sony's overall level is a lot higher, even though the settings are the same on each recorder. I recorded this into my DAW and the sony was about 10 db louder than the zoom! After level matching them the zoom sounds a lot brighter. Anyways, thanks for the vid, super helpful.
On my headphones if you make the zoom +5dB higher.. you.got the "hiss" sounds sadly. Also it peaks very easy over 0 with loud playing. But yeah.. the Sony records louder and warmer with zero hiss. I guess it is just the quality of the mics :) Best wishes!
@@StanislavStanchev yeah zoom recorders are notorious for having noisy preamps. Sony sounds less tinny than the H5, plus it's nice you can go up to 192k. That price tag though, ouch.
@@prizmwizard I managed to get mine with discount for around 550 euro :D So not that bad at all for what you get :)
@@StanislavStanchev nice, I'll have to keep an eye out for a good deal. Would be great for recording ambiences.
@@prizmwizard For sure :)
I prefer Sony, it sounds amazing.mics are extremely sensitive, preamps are extremely clean .It captured something complete and magical. The best hand recorder I ever heard😍❤️👍🏻
I think so as well! :)
The Sony is the clear winner based on sound alone using the built-in microphones, but the Zoom is more feature-rich and has XLR inputs which are unavailable on the Sony. So, I think the best choice will depend on your needs. Then again, the Sony is really the gold standard for sound quality and the build quality is fantastic! Also, you've got mad piano skills!
Thank you very much! And yeah Sony wins but both devices are great :)
I still like the old zoom haha. More mellow for a sombre piece.
Why not :)For me and my headphones the Sony is superior. More dynamic, realistic, richer and warmer :D But yeah.. they are both good :) Best wishes!
Hi Stan. I liked the sound of the Sony better. But both are good actually. Greater clarity with the Sony. I listened on my iphone and through a speaker and came to the same conclusion. 👍
I also like the Sony better :) It sounds more fuller, richer and warmer and the same time. The Zoom is also good, but it sounds from far away like I am in the other room haha :D Best wishes my friend!
The sony sounds brighter to me and the zoom sounds good too but different. My phone has terrible audio so I am unable to say what's better. You play amazingly in both! So I will go with that
Hehe thanks :) Try to listen with earphones or headset and you will see the difference :) The better the speakers.. the bigger it gets :D
@@StanislavStanchev will do!
listening to music on a smartphone speaker is like playing doom on a calculator :D
That is true :)
May I ask where you positioned the microphones? Thanks.
On the usual spot for all my piano videos. Next to the piano :)
Playing is amazing. But why didn’t you match the audio
Levels. The Sony being louder makes it hard to get an idea of the noise levels etc. I don’t mean have them both on 6 etc I mean level to what you hear. All products have different gain levels.
This video was requested particularly for what you get with both recorders with the same gain level. In my experience the zoom is with terrible preamps for piano recording and the "hiss" is quite noticable. You can download the video and decrease the gain on the Sony if you want to hear it with the same level :)
Interesting comparison! Prefer Sony. Like the tone :brighter and sweeter. Best wishes. :))
Thanks for watching Tina! Best wishes to you too! :)
It's like Yamaha (sony) compared to Bechstein (Zoom). Couldn't decide, i'd buy both and match either of them to the appropriate occasion.
For it is the opposite :D The Sony is the Bechstein (warmer and powerful) and the Zoom is the Yamaha (very capable but like the sie germans haha) :)
Out of curiosity, where in/on the piano did you place both of the microphones?
At the same place for all of my piano videos. Next to the piano :)
The Zoom destroys the Sony :O I know there are disagreements but I'm listening on Shure SRH1840 and am noticing a much more detailed sound for the Zoom... on the same gain settings it sounds a bit lower so if you would give it another dB or two the difference would become more clear.
Also he is applying more pressure on the keys when using Sony and lighter on the zoom.
did you EQ both? Lows are a bit muddy on the Sony
I didn't do anything. This is what comes straight out of them :D
Always Thank you for the good videos.
I wish i had more subscribers like you ㅠㅠ
Thank you! :) And keep working and you will get there :) Best wishes!
Hello, could you please tell me how far away the recording equipment should be if I want to record the works performed simultaneously by vocal and piano?
Depends on the room and instruments. You have to play around with it and experiment for the best results :)
I was surprised by this, I felt the Sony was definitely hotter and had more reverb, but it made for a slightly high pitched distortion (I felt) in the mids and hi's. It seemed to have a fuller sound, but I perceived that certain distortion that I didnt sense with the H5. Given that a new H5 is less than half the price of a used sony pcm-d100, I'll be happily picking one up in the future without any fomo from not having the Sony.
Thank you for producing this video!
You are welcome :) In general I love both recorders, but the Sony is worth every penny :) The Zoom preamps are quite noisy in comparison (at least for me) and i am more than happy that i made the switch to the Sony :) Best wishes!
Both sound great! But I'll definitely go with the sony, it's richer and clearer
Thanks for the comment Yali! :)
Is The gain higher on The Sony.? Thats May be big differnt when we listen
The same gain and exactly the same settings on both :)
I imported to premiere pro and had to add between 10 to 7 dB, to the H5 track. After that they peaked about the same.
Can I upload that adjusted clip on my channel ?
I can be wrong of course. I have bad hearing.
@vx1973 You can add gain to make it louder, but then the hizz noise will come and it is pointless in my opinion 🙂
The Sony has a lot more meat. There’s a deep depth the Zoom lacks. It almost sounds like a tube mic. The Zoom is thin in comparison. Great playing btw.
Thanks man :) Glad you enjoyed the playing :))
My moneys with the Sony, which I am glad about because that is the one I own.
really nice!!! the sony one sounds really great!!
Thanks Beth! I think the same as you :)
Yes, I feel the same, separation and detail are a bit better and noticeable on the Sony. I'm amazed that nothing in 2021 can beat that old Sony model (as of my knowledge), which is now going extinct on top of that. Go figure! Great video nevertheless!
That is for the beautiful music, I prefer the Sony as the clarity was better, the Zoom was also good but a softer sound.
Thanks for the comment Jan! :)
Is it only me who feels like zoom is “cleaning up and organizing” the sound more? For sure Sony feels more real...(I play grand piano big time) I wonder by cleaning up and organizing it it loses the nuance of the sound and color???
The zoom sounds like 2D, the Sony like 3D
I agree. I’m using quality studio headphones and to me the Zoom has more clarity. Sony is set louder and definitely has a darker sound to my ears. I would have to eq these recordings if I was using the Sony. I was ready to drop $1300 to buy a D100. Thanks for saving me the cash. I will keep my H5!
Sony is far away from the Zoom, but this doesn't mean that the Zoom is a bad recorder!
For less than half the price of the Sony and with a lot of additional features it is an excellent recorder for the price.
Thet are next to each other.. and this is not a comparison on features but a sound comparison of the mics that come with them. I like the Zoom but the Sony is just better :)
@@StanislavStanchev
When I said the "Sony is far away from the Zoom" I meant it in the quality of sound, not about where they are placed ;-)
And the sound quality is not only related to the mic's it's also and very much related to the preamps that are implemented in the construction of the product.
And the preamp of the Sony is simply much better than the preamps of the Zoom.
So even with very high quality microphones it is not so easy to get a real quit noise signal with the Zoom even when it is possible to get very good recordings.
You just have to boost the audio level from the microphones with an additional external preamp like the Triton Fethead.
Than you could even get a better sound quality than with the Sony but the final price of the whole set up with the additional equipment is much higher as the price of the Sony and the easy handling with a simple hand hold recorder is gone.
@@diderichlangmannen Yes I agree :) I changed from the Zoom to the Sony and I am very happy with the decision :) i always got the "hiss" noise from the preamps like you said with recording the piano :) Best wishes!
The sound recorded by Sony is very powerful. I prefer Sony. May I know the price?
i also like the Sony :) The price is different everywhere you look haha :d Usually it is around 600-700 dollars :)
Fantastic playing!!!!
Thank you very much! :)
Very good review actually. Can you please also do the test with sony uwp- d11?
Glad it was helpful. I don`t have the uwp- d11 sadly.
Can you do a Video... Sony Pcm d100 vs Rode videomic x??
Hi! Sorry, I am not into making tech comparison videos. This was a one of video when I had both of these recorders together :) Best wishes!
D100 wins hands down. Very good playing!!

Imagine my shock. Something 3 times more expensive is only 2 times better. Too bad doesn't have xlr phantom power input.
It is a lot better than 2 times in a lot of ways :). Preamps, atleast 5x better battery life, build in memory, made of metal etc :) And not everyone wants to carry additional cables and mics :) But yeah.. both devices are pretty good :) Best wishes!
Sony has audiably more depth and clarity. Not surprising given the bigger microphone heads and £550 price
Going by this video, I have to say I prefer the sound of the Zoom, though neither sound like quality recorders going by this video. I know they can do better, though. I saw this video on my laptop which is plugged into a quality hi fi. The Sony is loud, boomy and just hurts my ears. It is louder but I think the Zoom captures more of the subtlety.
i think you should look which fits the song the most, sometimes the Sony will be better and other times the Zoom will have an advanced as it has a tighter sound
advantage*
After I heard the Sony.. I must say that I can`t go back to the Zoom now haha :d
Zoom H5 Win! Match the volume to make a comparison.
Don't be fooled by tricks because the Sony sound is loud.
Volume is matched, the settings to record are the same. The zoom falls apart in mid and bass. Not to mention it sounds like it is from the other room.
Troll Rex, probably...
@@StanislavStanchev Matching the volume does not mean setting both to record at the same point on the dial on the recordings - it means making the volume of the resulting files the same loudness. Even so, the on board microphones on the Sony are better, which they should be for a unit that costs over 2x the price of the Zoom. The advantage of the Zoom are the XLR inputs with phantom power, which makes it alot more flexible. With the right microphones, the H5 should be able to surpass the Sony. This may not matter if you are looking for a portable, all-in-one solution, but it's something to consider before selling the H5.
@@mrnutterbutter I know what matching the volume means. But for me the real comparison is what you get out of the 2 devices with the same settings without adjusting the volumes after in post. Of course I could have lowered the dB on the Sony and up it on the Zoom. But that is pointless since the zoom gets the hiss noise after +4dB.
I like the Sony better. I like both though.
I also like both and prefer the Sony better :)
WHOA, thanks for the reply, thank you very much.
h5 most clear and less reverb. sony has a strange ‘rotary speaker’ rendition of the bass line so the piano sounds like an upright but this problem is related with the position of the recorder. sony seems way way more rich but without postproduction the final effect is too mellow. so sony is for best postpro h5 is for a ready to go record and upload
Both recorders are at the same place. For me the Zoom makes the sounds like an upright (very soft, muted and like some kind of a "filter" is used. Sony is more true to life in every aspect :)
@@StanislavStanchev yes I’ve understand what you mean. I have no mentioned the most important thing.. I’m listenting the video with my iphone so... but probably some recorders have a better rendition in cerain position expecially if they arr more sensitive. so more detail you can record most accurate must be the recording to take all the richness out of it. with a superior recorder (sony) you have a better file and you can use it for many final devices. in any case we have problems also with cd recordings..some recordings sounds too ‘digital’. I’m talking just after having recorded a rach prelude with my iphone. it’s terrible! if I play pp with one hand and ff with the other, it sounds like mf in one hand vs f in the other ahahaha I don’t know how youtube works in therms of audio convertion..some recordings are fine, but some
other are to flat (even if I listen them with the same device). talking about you...yes clearly sony is far better. but I think you could push it far with a little bit of postproduction. do you notice the same differences listening this video on your phone vs other devices?
@@iamwhatiam6281 Don't listen on a phone :) Listen with a proper headphones. The Sony gets better (like a lot) the better the speakers/headset gets. And yeah.. audio recording with phones is not good :) I used to record also with a phone back in the days.. really terrible :D Still better than nothing :)
@@StanislavStanchev yes I will use headphones :) a good recorder is a good choice! you have more pleasure in listening your performances.,it’s just terrible to spend efforts and time to have a good sound in every detail of one piece, recording it, and listen the worst recording you can imagine 😅😂
Haha yeah :Dd
Zoom H5 volume is too low. Comparing must be done with normalized audio. It's a known fact that louder volume sounds "better" (probably because you can hear more details easily). I understand you wanted to configure them in the same way regarding the gain, but they have different sensitivity so it's not the proper way to compare and it's not the way the recorded audio will be actually used-all recordings are always normalized before use.
Of course I can simply adjust the volume by ear, but it's not as accurate (and as convenient) as if you have normalized both records to a proper level.
Either than that, very good playing. Cheers!
Yes, if I still had the two I would have redone the video. And thanks! :)
H5 is great for film, Sony's device for concerts and detail. You can add an Rode NTG 5 to ZOOM H5 and piss all over Sony :-).

The Sony wins hands down! Love the recording quality. But I'll have to buy a Zoom I'm afraid. I really can't afford the Sony, even when waiting a couple of years. I'm still in university and the Sony is just waaay too expensive

To me, zoom sounds clearer and focus.
So Sony also costs twice as much. Zoom H5 - $ 299 and Sony PCM-D100 - $ 750. You need to compare in the same price category.
Sony. Zoom sounds good, but not enough powerful.
Both are good but I prefer Zoom for value.

sony is richer and fuller, but dont throw away the zoom!
I am planning to sell it :)
After listening to the Sony.. I can't get back to the Zoom now :D
You should try the H5 with the XYH-6 capsule - it's noticeably better. It has lower self noise than the XYH-5 and the noise itself is more muffled and thus more pleasant, than the more hissy noise with the XYH-5. But yes, the Sony *should* be better - it three times the price after all.
Sony by far has the better sound.
I think so too! :)
Prefer sony.
300$(170$ used) vs 1500$
More like 650$ for the Sony new when I bought it with a discount ;)
In my case, the SONY sounds better than the ZOOM if I use bad headphones. ZOOM sounds better than SONY if I use good headphones.
Sony is better

I love both, but the Sony is far superior :) With what speakers you listened? Hope not with the phone :)
ZOOM H5 SUPEERRR
You guys ever heard of gain staging? Sure Sony sounds beter here. It's just WAY MORE louder every time)

sony more low zoom have more mid...... sony sound like V ?.... zoom is poor low... booth poor stereo ;-]
