- Dorestad was one of the major urban centres of early-medieval northern Europe, situated between the territories of the Frisians (along what is today the Dutch, Belgian, and German coastline), and that of the Franks further inland. Some amazing coins have been unearthed there, dating from Roman times at the earliest, and in such quantities that there can be no doubt that this was the site of the famous Frankish mint at Dorestad.

In his book The Edge of the World, Michael Pye discusses how the Frisians reintroduced a cash economy to a Europe that had simply been bartering since the fall of the Roman Empire. If I remember correctly, some of the coins from this time period bear the name of the first heathen Frisian king that we can say with a modicum of certainty actually existed---Aldgisl. I believe the dithemic translates to Old Whip, which is a pretty badass name for anyone, especially a king.

interesting to compare these coins
On that final coin, "ᚫᚦᛁᛚ" in the top row clearly equates to "Æthel". On the lower line, is that ᛥ (st) cut off on the left? In Britain ᛥ is a manuscript only rune. Was it used epigraphically in Frisia? Isn't this period a little early for it anyway? The inverted ᚫ (a) is obvious. But what is that final rune? I can't recognise it at all. It could be ᚢ inverted but that makes no sense in context.
