You guys should do a video on the 16 gauge, I’ve noticed it doesn’t really get talked about much. It was my grandfathers favorite, the gentleman’s gauge.
Yes, the 16 gauge is one of the best, because it is a square round. Browning just came out with a new 16 gauge O/U and I have an original Remington wing master in 16. I love it. My dad even has a Fox 16 double barrel that was his first gun at 16. He will be 71 this November and still shoots skeet and small game with it. Killed alot of deer over the years with it too when I was a lad.
Leonard Cavaretta I inherited my grandfathers Remington 1148 and his Ithaca model 37 both in 16 gauge, great shooters. I’ve hunted with em both and taken a few game birds with them.
I dont think they ever actually did it, but a tube extension that wouldn't actually alter the gun in any way (as in, you could take the extension off and have the shotgun restored to its original configuration) would be badass. It would be the same concept as putting an extension on a mossberg 500 with a 28 inch barrel, that reaches to nearly the end of the barrel, to give ultimate capacity. I think that would really be the ultimate gun for defending against predators and hunting with buckshot.
I have an old Remington SP-10 that my dad gave to me and I love that gun. I don’t take it hunting a lot just because it is big and heavy but it sure is fun to shoot!
I have only known one man, a farmer back home in SC who purchased it new, to own a Ithaca Mag 10. He used/uses that wonderful shotgun for everything from turkey to deer and keeps he and his wife in "freezer meat" as they call it with that Mag 10. I do know of where one, in excellent to like new condition, is for sale as I type and for a very reasonable price along with a near twin in 12 gauge for an equally reasonable price that may be finding a new home in the very new future. Thanks for yet another excellent video!
We're going to manufacture a big extension for this so we can fit a whole bunch of shells in it. I like the way you think and I like your shirt. 😉 Nice shotgun.
joe8075 I don't own one so I don't have it in front of me to look at. You may be right but ive done some pretty amazing things that people said couldn't be done. I knew I should have stuck to not making comments on RUclips because there's always so much negativity everytime I make the simplest comment.
The gas piston assembly is in the front half of the "magazine tube". No way to increase capacity because of it, unless someone comes up with a external box magazine....? A 25 round drum mag would be cool :)
MooreLeather that's what I was more thinking along the lines of is a magazine fed system. I think it's possible. Like I said before though I don't know for sure because I don't have one to tinker with.
I used to lived in Ithaca for a long time, the old factory is nothing but a concrete wall in the hillside today. The state has labeled the land as a hazardous waste zone as the amount of lead in the hill from test firing guns is huge. It may even effect the local water table over time. Cornell has a proposition to clean up the land so that a developer can build an apartment building on the old site. They were excellent hand-made guns in their day. Just a distant memory today.
First I'd like to say that I like 10 gauge shotguns and have been shooting a 10 Gauge SXS Magnum since 1970. However, I picked up a brand new Ithaca Mag. 10 Auto in 1977 brand new in the box. I took it Goose hunting at Roseau MN (some 400 miles North of the Twin Cities) three times in 1978 and it broke on each trip. Luckily I had a back up shotgun with me. I met a guy at Roseau who also had an Ithaca Mag 10 and a tool box full of parts. He said his son was a machinist and he made him some parts out of higher quality tool steel to keep the Mag 10 running. I sold the gun in December of 1978. The later Ithaca Mag 10 might have been more durable but the Remington SP 10 is basically the Ithaca Mag. 10 completely redesigned and upgraded. In later years I picked up a Browning BPS in 10 gauge and chose that over the Browning Gold 10 gauge as a personal preference. I now shoot the BPS and my old Zabala SXS Magnum at waterfowl in MN. Incidentally, I also like Automatic shotguns and have been shooting a Browning Auto 5 since 1974 and have replaced only the main recoil spring after many years and thousands of rounds fired. This is the type of durability that should be expected from a quality firearm.Regards,Gungineer
I have a 1978 one. I use each year for duck hunting. One of the things I love about the gun. I can reach out and get the ducks. When others are sky blasting. Thank you for a great review and video.
My dads best friend brent can get the ducks lol. He uses a 12 but he also has shot league his entire life. I agree though, while others are skyblasting, There's a few guys out there who know their leads. My dad had a 10 gauge. One time, him and his 2 best buddies were talking out side the garage after a duck hunt. There was some honkers flying over our house sky high all morning long and Brent loaded up the 10 gauge, dropped a goose outta the sky and landed directly on our roof. Sounded like a meteor hit the top of our house. We lived out in the country in a coldesac with some cool neighbors so they didn't care lol
Back in the 1970's Ithaca had a Mag-10 version called the Roadblocker. Think it had an 18.5" barrel. It was said that with a few shots it could turn over a Volkswagen.
I have an old Ithaca 12 gauge semi auto from the 70s, it was my first bird gun. It’s been a solid gun with no problems since my first pheasant hunt back in 1987.

My brother shot the gun when it first came out at Ilion F&G club when he was 8. Remington filmed him shoot skeet with it to show how little it kicked. That was around 30 years ago.

Remington purchased the patent rights from Ithaca for the "Mag10" to develope their "SP10" around 1988 to compete with Mossbergs newly developed (and patented) 3-1/2 inch 12 gauge "Supermagnum" Model 835.
Remington did sell the SPR-453 which looks very similar to the Mag 10, but I don't think it was made in 10 gauge. Interesting fact though: most, if not all, of Remington's "Spartan" (SPR) series guns were designed by Baikal in Russia and sold under licence by Remington. Specifically, the SPR-453 was really a re-branded/re-designated Baikal MP-153. I actually bought one of the Baikal brand MP-153s recently but it hasn't gotten to my FFL yet.
I just picked one of these up 2/3/19. Like new in just amazing condition. Nobody stocks 10 gauge. In california your at the mercy of having to pay an ffl to order 10 gauge ammo. Unless you get a c&r and coe then your exempt from ammo laws.
I shot the Remington 10 gauge that was pretty similar to that Ithaca. Was freakin cool man! A friend of a friend had one for duck hunting. Let me tell ya that thing was the heaviest shotgun I've ever handled
The Remington and Ithaca are the same gun. When Ithaca went out of business, Remington bought the patents and started producing their version with minor changes.
The way the gas system is made I think it will be impossible to make an extension. But very curious to see if they can make it work. Also remington bought the patent from Ithaca, changed up the trigger guard and tightened some tolerances to make the sp-10...which they really need to re release. As long as they dont make it out of aluminum
I don't think the lack of an extended tube is why it only holds 2, it either has a wooden dowel in it like mossberg do or maybe a crimped tube. A standard tube like that should hold 3 maybe 4 shots
Nice! I've never seen a 10 gauge. Maybe because they aren't legal to be used for hunting (PR). Although I've never seen 16 and 28 gauge shotguns either.
CreepingDeath Because they are becoming rare, 10ga is basically a goose or duck gun, because it can literally put a shit ton of shot in the air. 16ga started out as a gun for women in the late 1890’s because the 10’s and 12ga’s would just beat the hell out of you, and the 20ga didn’t come out til the early 1900’s. They are still used for upland game and small game hunting, but 20ga had done a number on their popularity. 28ga it primarily used for skeet and trap shooting, because of it’s light recoil and when you’re shoot 200-400 rounds of ammo, even 12ga low brass will take a toll on your shoulder.
Jimmy Hoffa Thanks for the info. Here is not easy to find ammo for 20ga or .410. There's only one store than I know that sells ammo for every ga, except 10 or 16. I use my .410 for the first days of the dove season. Later I use the 20ga and then the 12ga. The higher they fly, the bigger the ga. My friends only use 12ga.
It would sure be nice if the ammo manufacturers would put a little effort into R&D for the big 10. It's capable of out performing the 12 gauge by a great margin.
I am a fan of the 10 gauge 3.5 inch. I have a H&R 176. I don't know why Ithaca never made a tube extntion. I get that waterfowl hunting is restricted to 3 shells. But I'm sure the police would have liked greater capacity on the Road Blocker version. It would have been heavier but it would be hanging in the car most of the time anyway.
Did they ever make a version in 12 guage, or 20 guage? Also, the Remington SP-10 was based on the Ithaca design. Remington actually bought the rights to the design sometime in the 1980s, or 1990s.
They can approximate the power of a 10 gauge on a 12 gauge frame, however; a 10 gauge weighs 11 pounds, while the 1w gauge only weighs 7-1/2 pounds to tame the recoi.
For those who are not knowledgeable about guns or hunting: The reason why it does not have a larger ammo capacity is because some or a lot of states and countries they have a rule for hunting with shotguns that you are only allowed to have 2 rounds or something like that in the gun. You can carry as much ammo as you can. It's just you must have a certain amount of shells inside the gun while hunting. Don't ask me why. I forgot the details. I think it has to do with the wild life conservation board having an influence in it. I think they did not want it to be that easy for the hunter to kill the animals. They want the critters to have a fair fighting chance to high tale it when they get shot at. Some people will give the explanation that it is because of some stupid conspiracy or other anti-government rant for it existing. I don't think this is the case. It feel like it's more of an additional rule to help negate any negative effects of how effective guns are for hunting than are other tools, and to force people to actually..... you know.... be accurate on the first shot with their gun, instead of just shooting frantically with a lot of ammo like a crazy person. Most hunters from what I hear and experience say they only need one or two shots typically to do the job. So the ruling to me is both half stupid odd, but at the same time adapting hunting laws that fit the abilities of how most hunters operate, and how much ammo people actually fire in a single hunt. (A good hunter can in fact hit multiple targets if he knows how to aim well, and the chance/opportunity presents for animals to be aligned right.)

My son has it locked up in his safe , last I seen it ,it looked brand new . I have wood protectors on the buttstalk and fore grip
You really know your culture; impressive Jumanji reference!
If I'm not mistaken t shot is 90 20 caliber pellets devastating. A great antidrone gun.
Take the plug out it will hold 3 more i have the same model i got over in japan in the 80s they are awesome love mine i have SKB Ithaca 20 gauge 12 gauge and 10 gauge so much fun for my family cheers guys great video 👍👍💪🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
YOU GUYS REMIND ME OF MY FRIENDS BACK IN THE DAY WHOSE FATHER'S WERE HUNTERS THAT WOULD GET INTO THE GUN CABINET AND "TEST FIRE" THEM IN THE BACKYARD.
I remember my grandpas old 10 gauge with no but pad just a peice of steel I remember being 10 years old and on his farm when I first shoot it man did I go flying now though i shoot it often and I love it
Finally got a 10 Gauge magnum this year and wondering if you would do a reloading video for 10 Gauge
Good for home defense - if run out of ammo, you can use it as a club! Also good for drive-by's!
Remington purchased the patent rights from Ithaca for the "Mag10" to develope their "SP10" around 1988 to compete with Mossbergs newly developed (and patented) 3-1/2 inch 12 gauge "Supermagnum" Model 835.
I could watch that action work in slow motion all day.
Nice gun, never have seen a 10 gauge here in central EU. Most people here use 16 gauge for hunting mentioned pheasants and birds.
I want one of these SO bad but I want one that fits at least 5 shells. 1 in and 5 back up.
I think even grizzlies would run away. 💥💣💥
Yes.
Do a magazine tube extension.
👍
What a great gun. You absolutely have to make a tube extension for that. Then you will really have something.
The look of this shotgun reminds me of my old Weatherby PA in 12ga. I regret selling that thing, it was sweet.
Hey guys!!!! How is that extended mag tube coming along? It would be amazing to see.
Dude best intro ever
Bear protection .I always carried my 870mag back in my Alaska days.
Beautiful shotgun, a lot of raw firepower. By the way, I just LOVED that Resident Evil reference, I immediately knew what Eric was talking about 😂
I shot the Remington 10 gauge that was pretty similar to that Ithaca. Was freakin cool man! A friend of a friend had one for duck hunting. Let me tell ya that thing was the heaviest shotgun I've ever handled
My dad has the remington sp10 aka new mag 10 and loves it!
great video as always brother. I have a Browning BPS 10 ga stalker, and I love it. its a great gun.
I have that exact gun as well, super fun!
I like seeing some of Chad's collection too. He's got some cool stuff.
Ithaca xl900 12 gauge 2 3/4 chamber with selectchoke . Proud owner.
damn i wouldn't mind one of those. perfect for when you forget your cannon and leave it at home
I've wanted one of these for years should've got the one I seen at an auction.
I don't think the lack of an extended tube is why it only holds 2, it either has a wooden dowel in it like mossberg do or maybe a crimped tube. A standard tube like that should hold 3 maybe 4 shots
All I can think is cut barrel down, tube extension, and the custom stock a forgrip, rail, and hair trigger
Check out warwolf oridinance they sell 0000 buck shot and dragons breath for the 10 gauge. It would be cool to see a video with those loads.
Francis E.Sell had 20 gauge technology that beat TODAYS 10/12 gauge ammo back in the late 1950's and very early 1960's.
Nice! I've never seen a 10 gauge. Maybe because they aren't legal to be used for hunting (PR). Although I've never seen 16 and 28 gauge shotguns either.
CreepingDeath
Because they are becoming rare, 10ga is basically a goose or duck gun, because it can literally put a shit ton of shot in the air.
Curious to see the difference in cut shells across all the guages, including 410.
I use a browning Gold Light 10 for waterfowl. Nothing patterns like the 10!
I wanted one of these when I was looking for a 10 gauge but I couldn't find one and settled for a bps
They made them from 1974 to 1986 then Remington bought the patent and in 1989 Remington made the SP-10 Magnum based off at the Ithaca mag 10
I'm thinking you either manufacture a mag tube extension, or you manufacture that thing into an SBS for the Truck Gun of the century
Unfortunately this has not become a reality yet
Here, on Maryland's eastern shore, you may need the 10 for high altitude Geese.
I have a browning gold 10 10 gauge and I’ve taken a deer with it at 60 yard
Love that ithica. Need one to fit in with my pumps. Can't wait for you guys to add an extension on that mag tube. 😂😂😂
I love shooting my h and r 176. Had to have one
after first thumper video. It's funny watching confetti when shooting slugs.
Did they ever make a version in 12 guage, or 20 guage? Also, the Remington SP-10 was based on the Ithaca design. Remington actually bought the rights to the design sometime in the 1980s, or 1990s.
I love to put some 3.5 inchers in a side by side and pull both triggers at once. I wish I could do that with a 10
This guys is what I call "the demon hunter" if you know what I am talking about.
We're still waiting for that tube extention, man.
They can approximate the power of a 10 gauge on a 12 gauge frame, however; a 10 gauge weighs 11 pounds, while the 1w gauge only weighs 7-1/2 pounds to tame the recoi.
Dude I love the RE1 reference... ahhh childhood
Also it’s almost impossible because of this particular gas system
