The Allure of Columbine Fandom

- Shortly before the 20th anniversary of the Columbine school shooting, an 18-year-old named Sol Pais sent much of the United States into a panic.
Without telling anyone her plans, Pais had flown from her home in Miami to Denver, where she bought a shotgun and then disappeared. When the FBI learned about her obsession with Columbine, it launched a manhunt involving more than 20 federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. Hundreds of schools closed, affecting more than 500,000 students. Pais’s picture was all over the news, which described her as “armed and dangerous."
All of it - the manhunt, the school closures, the wall-to-wall coverage on local and national TV - was for naught. Law enforcement and the media had fundamentally misunderstood the story of Sol Pais: She never made any explicit threats, nor was there any indication that she intended to cause harm to others. That misunderstanding was based on a deeper failure to comprehend what drives young people to become fixated with the Columbine massacre - and what lies at the root of school shootings themselves.
In the third and final installment of UNSAFE: Learning from America’s School Shootings, VICE News Tonight explores one of the stranger and lesser known dimensions of Columbine’s legacy.

I went to school with a boy who was obsessed with the Columbine shootings. I didn't think anything of it because I loved watching documentaries about serial killers myself, so I thought he was like me. Then as the year went on, he started saying some scary things. He would say, "we could do it, you know" and then talk about shooting up our school. It started to scare me, but one of his other friends said, "Oh no, that's just his dark humor, he doesn't mean it", so I believed him. Then he showed me a notebook he always carried with him, where he had not only written a list of the people he wanted to kill, but a story where he and I shot up the school together. He called us "the Romeo and Juliet of school shooters". I got scared and stopped hanging out with him. Then one day in January Sophmore year, we were all in the cafeteria eating lunch when he grabbed me from behind and put a knife up to my throat. He said if I wasn't with him, that I was "just like everybody else" and I had to die. The teachers got the rest of the students out before they turned back to me and him. He said that it was a shame and that he really loved me. I don't remember how the teachers got him to let me go, just that one second he had me and the next, I was being carried out of the cafeteria by the history teacher as cop cars pulled up. After that day, he never came back to school. I still have PTSD from that day and I don't trust people who talk about being in love with or idolize Dylan and Eric.

When I was in middle school I worked on a project on the history of the KKK and I became fascinated with how and why it started. My dad became concerned at one point but I reassured him I was just curious why people think the way they did and how and why they think like that. It is where I discovered my passion for history but I never glamorized it like some of these people do.
When it came to the Columbine shooting, I was 15 years old at the time. Even then, I felt like the whole thing was going to be idolized.
I remember going to my peer mediation class, days later, and hearing classmates state they understood why the shooters did what they did. I was friends with students, who were social outcasts, who felt either indifferent towards the victims or they simply said "good".
That's a disgusting lack of empathy. Which is why this country is so messed up these days.
They don't get it. They don't understand the grief, the pain, the soul ripping heart ache that the families of the children that they killed went through. Disgusting blissful ignorance.
I agree. Whenever I hear about a tragic event, I always think about how crushing and traumatic the experience would feel like on the victims. I was in town during the Garlic festival shootings in Gilroy California, I had family at the festival. It’s just devastating to think about how it felt to be the family/loved ones of the victims. It’s a shame how people like these don’t understand this...
Ant Borb people who glorify these people are dangerous to society and should also be locked up or receive therapy
Yes... And no. When you get to the point of being suicidal, you just don't care. You're already in a world of pain, why aren't others? If they aren't, it's unfair and they should pay. If they are, how can they bear such an insufferable existence? Better to end it, for you and for them. It's a derailed thought, but not that uncommon.

I related with the columbine shooters when I was in high school. I discovered the journals at 15, and it’s insane how hard I related. Getting bullied. Wanting to kill myself. Not getting any girls. Not being seen or heard or understood. Feeling like you have no future, that all roads lead to nothing. Feeling bleak. Wanting others to feel your pain. Wanting to kill people for mistreating you.
I had that mindset when I was a teen. I truly felt and believed this. If I had access to guns I myself may have made the mistake of taking lives. Thank god I didn’t.
Since then I got help. I’m doing better now at 25 years old.
But if you don’t understand how a teenager can relate to Dylan and Eric on a spiritual level. Then you must have gotten a lot of love from friends and family growing up.

Speaking as a victim of abuse and bullying ever since I was a kid, never once the thought to k*ll them struck me. Instead, I thrive to forgive them and make sure I never become bad person.
Then a day come when a bully apologized to me and I accepted it, eventhough i already forgave her years ago.
The whole school bullied me, the teachers, the students, and i never told my parents in fear of troubling them. the only one on my side is the cats in the school, they often come to visit me.

i was in this "fandom" from about 2013-2016, which was its "prime". i wish there would be a better longer documentary with more eloquent ex fans, who could explain better as to why we chose *that* as an interest. and why girls specifically have this fangirling obssession, while male fans tend to idolize and reinact what happened. its easy to shame (the non violent *only* fans) and call them disgusting/crazy, but its a lot deeper than that. the kind of mindset all of us were in was incredibly dark. we all really wanted to die and most had dates planned, usually around the anniversary. it was like having a black cloud over your entire body for years. depression but even more vile, with such bitterness to everyone around you. its funny how my brain is completely the opposite of how it was back then and now i recognize how scary i was. nothing really felt real then. i hope that most of them grow out of it like i did.
also what she was referring to as being worse than her profile were the violent edits, like one super mario bros song edited with the shooters yelling (in home video pre shooting). tons of amvs. the flower crown edits. also the gore. i wish i hadnt seen that stuff back then at age 15, but it was all over my dash...
the only benefit to the community is we talked eachother out of doing bad things. i was never personally in one of those conversations but i saw them happen over tumblr posts. we know the warning signs better than anyone. and having the sympathy factor is almost like stockholm syndrome if ever one was in a school shooting scenario theres a chance they could talk the perpatrator down. now the communities, like the subreddit have people interested in the case as history. they have very strict rules and have been able to contact athorities when someone tries posting something in their subreddit. people may hate these communities, but its best it they stay above ground where people can monitor for real threats to prevent. otherwise they go on the dark web and it gets harder to prevent.

there is no justification for this, you're a weirdo for defending these dangerous psychopaths. also only male fans reinact??? not only do people demonize the male fans more, but there was valid suggestion that this girl was going to reenact another Columbine. there have been many other women inspired to commit crimes themselves by other killers. a hashtag Kill All Men, prompted by women supposedly against violence against women, was found in a woman's apartment after she murdered her boyfriend. it's easy to demonize because there's nothing TO justify, regardless of the "understanding". we don't try to understand male serial killers so stop tryna understand their fans who are women.

It's not like it's a new problem. America's children have been the biggest crybabies on Earth for the past 60 years.
One of the biggest causes of this is the typical american parent is so readily willing to give up their authority to a paid mouth.
Kids need love, strength, acceptance and moral fortitude from their parents. They do not need a good buddy who passes the buck.
You can think whatever you want of me and my opinion but my boy always did well and is a productive American citizen. Yes, every now and again a kid goes wrong even though he/she had a great parent or parents but shit happens. We need to quit trying to assign blame and academic terms to this stuff and work harder instead. Bottom line is; once your a parent you have responsibilities.

I think a lot of people also forget that not only is being “depressed” or “suicidal” cause some to “idolize/sympathize” with mass shooters (especially Eric and Dylan) but they can also show signs of having a low self esteem, “daddy issues”, and/or they feel they could have saved or changed Eric and Dylan. As someone who has been apart of the columbine research community for a while and someone who knew people that idolized them. I’ve seen posts online of girls (and boys) trying to place themselves in Eric and Dylan shoes. Act like them, dress like them, quote them, you name it. The web is FULL of Eric and Dylan fanfics and imagines. It’s not only edits that people make. I’m not a therapist so I can’t tell you why they think they can fix them but I can tell you that when your depressed or suicidal you rather think of anything other then your feelings/situation. People that imagine themselves being their friends or dating them and maybe being able to save them, are the same people that have never felt appreciated or important in their life. So being apart of a community (if that’s what you want to call it) like this helps people get away, put themselves somewhere else mentally and a way to feel like they have a positive impact on things, and in turn rise their self esteem and make themselves feel important. Thanks for listening to my Ted-Talk!😘

These are the kind of girls who think they can “fix” a guy with enough love.
When I was in my late teens, I began doing extensive research on school shooters. I wasn’t inspired or anything, I just wanted to know their stories. Their backgrounds, personalities, mindsets and motives. I wanted to know who they were as people, to understand their perspectives.
Eventually though, I realized something I should’ve realized much earlier: these people really weren’t that interesting. Most of them did have some kind of tragic aspect about their lives (got bullied, struggled with social anxiety or other mental disorders, allegedly experienced childhood trauma), but all of them at their core were just narcissists. They wanted things they didn’t have, were envious of those who excelled at what they failed at, believed the whole world should share their pain, or even simply wanted to satisfy their extremely morbid curiosity at the expense of everyone else. The reason they did what they did was because they were self-entitled cowards, nothing more.
If anything, I found the stories of their victims to be far more compelling and even inspirational, as many of them struggled with very similar problems as their killers’, yet managed to confront/overcome them without going on a killing spree. This is when I realized it was truly more important to remember the victims than the shooters. They weren’t just innocent people, they were strong people who found ways to conquer the challenges they faced and live their lives to the fullest. The only people who NEED to remember the shooters are psychologists and trained professionals. Their psychology is what made them unique, not their stories.
The fact that she doesn’t want to delete her account still and she has no good reason as to why she doesn’t want to delete it makes me think that she definitely still idolizes them and her obsession with these guys definitely did not diminish after 2018 (as she says it did). She says she wants to show how she's changed. It's a much healthier approach to acknowledge the mistakes we've made than to try to erase them. Maybe rather than suggesting she delete it he should suggest she update it to point others who may still be seeking this kind of thing to the mental health resources they need. Something like "I was there once, I get it, you can find help too, here's how".
@@swbigfan1 so by your logic you think it’s ok for drug dealers to keep the items they used to sell as a reminder of how far they’ve come? @@BlackGirlLovesAnime6 First of all your logical association has one major flaw, a drug dealer is breaking the law - she wasn't and isn't.
Additionally, I find your quick assumptions about her based on one short video rather disturbing. You assume you know her intentions in keeping the page up and you assume an extremely limited definition of mental health issues. Yes, she was obsessed with mass murderers. Doesn't that very fact imply that her thought processes were not healthy? Was that due to depression, low self esteem, and/or abuse or neglect of some type? We don't know, and you shouldn't make assumptions.
There's a whole world of mental health problems out there and when someone displays issues suggesting they may need help that's what we need to give them. Help them, or point them toward resources to get help. Show compassion to help them treat their underlying issues rather than jumping straight to an attack on their current behavior merely because their issues aren't displaying according to your limited definition of mental health - ie an eating disorder.

I was in high school in Denver when Columbine happened and I can’t explain the post-shooting vibe and the people that tried to capitalize on it.
I was in a k-12 hippie school and we all went to ‘community’ in the mornings, all ages.
The young kids looked at us, admittedly non-conformist teenagers, and admitted they were now scared of us. Kids we interacted with every day. Luckily we were in a world where it was intelligently talked out and felt.
We turned a tragedy into an opportunity for expansion.
These people in the video need to spend 10 minutes in the real world, I would enjoy it.
There's nothing wrong with being interested in "true crime" but there is a problem with making the killer(s) or perpetrators of these crimes sympathetic, especially to the point of becoming an apologist or admiring their crimes. To me, the focus of these crimes should always have the interests of the victims and the victims' families in mind rather than the criminal themselves. I think even the more reasonable community surrounding true crime forgets the victims in the drama surrounding the perpetrators sometimes and dramatizes things for effect. Even true crime channels that promote mobile games and murder mystery boxes for monetary gain alongside the discussion of real-world crime is a little insensitive. Forgetting real people had no choice at the end of their lives, cut too short, and their families' suffering, as a result, is a terrible thought, because they're the ones who really have to live with the choices of the perpetrators forever, not the perpetrators. I think there's a real problem with the sensitivity of true crime and the subjects of this video show that to the extreme.
Fan videos showing how ''cute'' perpetrators are, or finding a ''crime'' cool and create music videos on the subject is not normal and should send warning signals. You can find hundreds of SS/Wehrmacht/Nazi-music videos with german soldiers marching to war during WWII to various rock/alternative/meme-songs. It's modern propaganda, often created without realization.
I agree. I wish there was something we could actually do but the media couldn't care less. They're in it for profit.

One of my best friends from childhood was really into Columbine. She knew it was taboo so she only told me until we were about 22 years old while I had major depression and CPTSD. Maybe she thought I would be less judgemental while in that mental and emotional state.
She's a very talented, brilliant and witty person but always struggled with some things I never had to. We stopped hanging out because she became a bit of a bigot for a while and spoke very loudly against vulnerable groups. Some of which I'm part of. I wasn't a perfect friend though, when we were 24 I went over to vent about a private argument we had on a blog that I kept as a private diary (just for my eyes) but forgot that I had set it on public for a bit so another friend could read an essay or something else I had written, and forgot to put it back on private. So she read it and rightfully got upset.
I don't think she ever condoned the masacre (she said that and I believe her) but it seemed like she was glamorising and idolising them. She sent me her a link to her tumblr blog back in 2012 or 2013 and between her reposts and the blogs from other people who also had crushes on the shooters the whole thing was disturbing, indignant and enraging. I did try to be tactful when telling her is not my thing. But yeah, obvs I was being judgemental. I don't think she trusted me anymore.
“Vodka? Yes I love vodka.” Lol
Imagine romanticizing literal murderers

Just in case Ana is reading this, I wanna say I get it. I get dark aesthetics, dark humor, alternative clothes, and fascination with death. It can be interesting and beautiful! Even necessary to express your true self. I understand and struggle with the plagues of depression and suicidality. But I have lost a friend to gun violence, and the person who did it was like a sister to me. I will always love her, her dark, weird aesthetic, and the times we laughed till we couldn't breathe. She had no previous record, was an excellent student, and surprisingly enough to some, cared deeply about human rights. I have learned that fetishizing an act of killing is far different from caring about the people involved in violence. Maybe those long-dead, would-be old dudes are physically attractive to you, cool. But fetishizing them and their acts without loudly denouncing the violence aspect is irresponsible. I feel like Ana is on the verge of realizing that, and for that I'm proud of her. You can love someone who does something unspeakable, but you should have a good reason to love them, and do your best to make sure future violence against others is not something you're perpetuating. I’ll give you my answer. I used to be in the tcc January 2019-June 2019. Yes I regret it. Yes I wish I could go back in time and tell myself how stupid I am. But, I have no idea what drew me to columbine. Someone I followed on instagram had an interest in them and at first I found it disgusting, I even left a hate comment on their tellonym saying how horrible it was to “stan” these boys. But then very slowly I started looking more and more into it, looking at edits, going on god forsaken tumblr, etc. And before I knew it all I could think about was columbine. It completely changed my personality. I started listening to KMFDM and playing DOOM (both of which eric and dylan did)...I hate industrial music and video games...why did I do that just because they did??? The only thing I guess I can say is you almost forget what they did. Watching their old videos and reading things about them from family and friends, you do kind of see them as very real and relateable people, although I wasn’t depressed or anything. I never fully excused their crimes, I always talked about the victims and learned about their lives as well. If I were to give a general answer based on the people I’ve met, eric and dylan were teenage boys who are deemed “relateable” just because they were “loners” and “depressed” and so teenagers nowadays (incredibly ignorant and naïve teenagers) are drawn towards them because they feel that they are not alone in their thoughts. Most grow out of it, it’s just basically an overly-edgy phase. Idk I didn’t mean for my answer to be this long lmaooo. Well I hope I answered some of ur questions. 😗
