E03 Saving my house from mad overgrown ivy

- Joing me and Judy&Jordan, two volunteers that stayed with me in September, when we remove an overgrown ivy from the facade of my house. It took 10 hours, we filled 10 trailer loads. Another volunteer also used up two chain saws when he removed the rest of the stems in October.
I shared a reel of when a big chunk of this fell off on Instagram that went VIRAL with 25 million views and thousands of comments. People had a LOT of opinions about the removal and the opinions were divided. Sooo many thought it was a shame and that I had ruined the house and on the other line people thought it was the best thing I could do for the house because ivy is so invasive and destroys houses.
Now, I know I have every right to do whatever I want with my house, but I still want to explain a bit here, to avoid some unnecessary comments.
1. I could see signs of distress on the house, for example on the foundation where the ivy was planted.
2. The windows couldn't open up properly and when you tried open it (what was possible), insects would come inside.
3. The ivy was preventing the bricks/mortar/roof to breathe and it kept it moist which can be very damaging.
4. It wasn't possible to just cut it back, it was too old so it wouldn't look nice because the branches were too thick and dense. It would just be a naked carpet of branches left. Either way I wanted to inspect the whole facade to get control of the damage, but it was impossible to see a quarter of the facade through the branches.
5. Ivy isn't native to Sweden, it would be better to plant something more natural to the habitat for the wildlife. Also I have a very big garden, that plant wasn't crucial to the survival of the bees flying around the ivy. Some people also felt sorry for all the insects living in the plants, but I am sorry, they had to go.
6. We wore bee suites because we were afraid there would be wasps or bees nests in the plant, luckily there were none. We waited until the end of September when all of the nectar had been collected from the flowers.

Beautiful brickwork. I think if the Ivy was trimmed every year it might not have overgrown so much. Good job though. Well done!
Probably yes, one can not let ivy go on their facade without controlling it.
So satisfying to watch it peel itself off it some cases lol!
Yeah, the biggest chunk came off easy. But the tougher part, the type you were dealing with took most of the day and then one more to saw it off with a chainsaw. It was impossible to remove by hand 😬
Getting up on the ridges of that roof must have been pretty terrifying at first! Well done.
At first and still 😆
@@old_school_moaboa I just love how the wind usually kicks in when I bring out the ladder...living on the edge! 😆
It looks fantastic with all the greenery gone!!😊
You did a fantastic job! That brickwork is beautiful. It looks like it wasn't too badly damaged by the ivy, which is surprising. That roofline though... scary! Glad you're all unharmed:)
Thank you! I was sure happy to be back on the ground. I don't know if you noticed how my hand was shaking when I climbed onto the higher roofline? It was scary
Amazing work! You saved yourself thousands from what professional landscapers would charge and they would not have done any better. It was well worth it. That ivy was damaging the fabric of your lovely house. I can only guess the improvement inside the room with those two windows now cleared. The brickwork on your house is stunning. I love the beautiful herringbone pattern of the brickwork. You might want to consider cleaning the roof. I have seen videos of professional room cleaners, but I think you could do as good by yourself.
I want to clean it properly when I have managed to locate and fix all the small leaks here and there. Will probably do it myself and just rent a cherry picker and use a high pressure washer. But I want the inside of the roof exposed when I do this to spot any more eventual leaks. So a future fun job to do 😁
What a production! 💪🏼😃 Glad you’re safe back on the ground! Well done! ... and happy holidays! 🎄
Thank you! The recording was mostly made by Jordan and Judy in the video, so I owe a big thanks to them for helping me out that day
Shit vad modig du är. Jag fick svindel bara av att titta. Bra jobbat!
Haha det fick jag också när jag gjorde det. Men måste man så måste man
Otroligt fint hus. Räkna med många år av renovering.
Jag räknar med resten av mitt liv 😁 vilket var det jag önskade, behöver något att jobba med och som är utmanande
So satisfying!!
What a great job!
💖🙏🇨🇦
Thank you 🫶
Wow, wow, wow! Such a hard work. Greetings from cologne Andy
We got a lot done, but it all went down in one day. Imagine if all jobs had such effect for one day's work like this job? I would never stop working ;-)
So happy to see you off that roof! That must have been scary. Great job removing the ivy. I bet the bedroom is so much brighter now.
Well before you couldn't even see out and it wasn't possible to open the windows 😬 so much better now 😁
Well done indeed. Ivy looks so lovely until you see the utter destruction it causes to a building. I really admire your tenacity courage and sheer hard work in tackling such a beast. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Luckily I had some help. But climbing on the roof I couldn't ask the volunteers to do 😬
You should have cut the root and paint the root. Then leave it for few days. Now the connection to the earth is gone.
That’s what we do when I see growth of IvY on the house.
Will do next time 🙂
In cat timp a crescut aceasta Hedera Helix ?
OMG, so brave of you!
I don't know if you noticed but I was shaking a lot on the top of the roof 😵💫 but it needed to get done so what are you gonna do? 🤷♀️
They say climbers affects the walls, yours seems perfectly fine... May be i can try some on my roof 😂
It was fine in most places. But for example in one place there was a crack above a window where the ivy clinged on and after 10 years it had expanded in the grace and disrupted the arc of bricks above the window. And it broke a few windows. Suffocated the roof (haven't check here for damage yet but remains to see when I renovate the roof). But my type of roof needs to be properly ventilated. And not to mention the damage on the foundation on the corner, there is a lot of damage to repair there. But all in all, there are good climbers and bad ones. Both could be used I suppose -when looked after properly 😄
And with at least 50 cm gap between foundation and the bed
@@old_school_moaboa I think your structure is pretty well strong, that's why minimal impact compared to houses in our place, Kerala... Here heavy monsoon causes havoc to the house due to no one cares about the structural strength or may be not aware of. And vines cause large amounts of moisture to walls and damage it.
@@old_school_moaboa and yes, allowing the climber to use it's brain, which it doesn't have, will be our mistake... And surely we can manage by timely pruning and restricting the growth.... But at times we get too busy with life and we neglect and we get a mini jungle. 😂
Hopefully I won't get a jungle 😂
@@_R.T_ I wish the best of luck to with this. Love Kerala, I have spent some time in Varkala and the surrounding area. Great seafood!
Wow !
😁
I like how the way it goes. ❤
So did we, we couldn't believe it. But the rest of it was as hard as the first part was easy
Why do I have a feeling we'll be seeing this house featured on Nukes top 5 😅
Ha, I have one scary testimonial from a child that went to the school about a 100 year ago. Apparently the teacher was a real satanic monster towards poor children and beat them. The boy grew up and wrote down his school experiences in the 1980s and I found them on the online archives of a museum.
But I haven't seen any paranormal. But I am also not open to that
WOW! GO GO girl power ;)
💪💪💪
Rent a cherry picker next time
That was my precisely my thought after all was done 😄 in the next videos when I work on the roof I use one
Just found your Instagram ID a few mins ago and came here to subscribe to your channel and watch your videos💖 You're doing amazing 😍
