Are 12 Finalists TOO MANY? Should DCI let ALL drum corps perform all THREE days?

Only 37 drum corps. How sad, how elitist. US culture and US economics have failed youth at the local level. Rich parents with rich kids supporting rich staffs and corporations. It's all about the money.

A lot of sturm and drang for the actual change of simply eliminating one or two spots. As I see it, as the corps dwindle the 12 becomes a simple cut-off, and even if one day half the corps make finals, it's not much different than half making semis or half making the top 25, The point where some corps which no longer seem worthy of being a top 12 finalist are making it, that's the point where changes should be made, and probably not elimination of 1 or 2 spots which won't solve the underlying issue.
As it is, it seems like about the top 16 are arguably worthy of the 12th spot, and in recent years this race became as if not more interesting than the race for first, or a medal. That yearly intrigue would be excised by a top 10 or 11, as corps in that range would no longer be realistically competing for a finalist spot.
Not to mention, it would upend a tradition of 12 spots used throughout DCI history. Regardless of whether one like the number 12- I do, as it sets the activity apart, we do it that was because we do it that way- changing it would alter of the cornerstones of how it's always been done... for little return- that's just my opinion.
If I'm not mistaken the new All Age corps competed in finals on the morning and day, on finals day, and had their own retreat at about 3pm or so. It's as indoor stadium, so this worked weather-wise. And gave everyone the chance to see shows they would not otherwise see, so it sounds like they found a perfect fit to do something like what you suggested.

DCI can totally turn World Championships in to an all-skate, everyone performs, three-day thing!
All you have to do is get staff members to stop pleading with their units to beat certain groups. And we know that will not happen.

So we're going to take an activity that's already struggling and hurt the recruitment opportunities for more corps.

Go to 15 on sat night. There is time. Dci has 15 clearly good enough to do sat night

Happy to say I would have made finals in '86 even with just top 10.

World Open used to be 10 finalists. Prize money was scaled from $100 to $1000. All corps fit neatly between yard markers leaving end zones free. Corps had room to "pass in review" in reverse order paying respect to the winner as each played themselves off the field. I miss patriotism in the activity.

Top 6 or GTFO. Competition drives innovation, encourages efficiency, and ultimately benefits consumers by offering a variety of choices and driving down prices. It also motivates companies to continuously improve their products and services to stay ahead in the market.

@meta ai imagine a world of DCI finalists all competing together in harmony driving down prices in a world of abusing late stage capitalism.

Idk. Tickets to finals are so expensive already. I’m gonna have to start going every other year. I’ll be honest.. if it’s only a top 6 I would not spend the money to go.

@@chadtarver3301 I have NEVER been in Lucas Oil. I splurge on a Regional (San Antonio, Atlanta, Allentown) once every decade. I am old, retired, and too poor to spend retirement savings on this activity. I do watch free spring training and volunteer for field duties at local shows.

Just make Hopkins' G7 proposal a reality. The top 7 corps create their own superleague with all the rest trying to get in. Only the top 7 perform at finals. The number 7 corps gets knocked out (relegated) and the top unit from the lower division takes its place in the superleague. Similar to Champions League soccer.

And if the number 7 corps still had a higher score than the number 8 corps in the lower division?

The original proposal from He Who Shall Not Be Named, in the days before he brought down his Cadets, paraphrased by a DCP poster, was thus:
Blue Devils, Vanguard, Crown, Cavaliers, Phantom, Cadets, and Bluecoats put out a proposal last spring to:
      1. create a circuit for the top 7 WC corps inside the current tour
      2. ban all the other corps from performing on Fridays and Sundays (do not share any money from G7 friday/sunday shows with other corps)
      3. redefine the corps into classes called AAA, AA, and A (AAA would be the top 7)
      4. give all voting power within DCI to these 7 corps (they would each get 2 votes, AA corps (aka 13-17) get 1, and 18+ get no votes)
      5. remove all DCI support for open class
      6. allow these 7 corps to move the other corps around from AAA to AA to A as they please based purely on a vote
      7. provide the 7 corps with more money from shows
      8. only market the last 8 corps performing at saturday regionals ("8 at 8" concept)
      9. delete independent show sponsors
      10. remove much of DCI's HQ staff, it is wasteful
they also had ideas about how the new shows would be judged, including a "winds" caption. Other ideas included interactive warmups, instant encores, announcer hype, audience participation, etc
the powerpoint stated, among other things (these are direct quotes):
Drum Corps International is in danger fiscally. Poor attendance, high overhead, and a base of more corps than the organization can support, has put the organization’s continued existence in jeopardy. As much as the “G7” are proud members of Drum Corps International, we believe that change is necessary to assure our continued service to our students and our communities
Corps are NOT the same. Those who drive sales through excellence and entertainment ability deserve to be rewarded
Premier Corps are Critical to DCI’s success and require greater influence. .The premier corps are critical to the organization’s success. As such, the opinion of these same corps is most important and needs to be valued. It is not wise, or appropriate, that each of the current world class corps have a vote that holds equal influence. Those who sell tickets, those who generate sales, those who are most marketable -need also to control a larger portion of the vote on business and adjudication issues. Governance needs to be weighted to allow those who drive success to affect decisions.
