This interview changes my life. I used to have almost know self-confidence but watching john's attitude here really changed my life. I think the most important line is "I don't give a shit what you think. I know what I think and that's all that counts to me. I don't try to impress anybody but myself". It has become a kindof motto in my life. And made me a much happier person.
Coming back to watch this because it had a HUGE EFFECT on my life as well. Getting into Punk Rock as a kid is the best thing that can ever happen to you
The way he says 'I don't give a shit what you think' really sticks with me. It's almost like a reflex like he doesn't think about it at all. He doesn't even seem like he's trying to insult, merely state a fact.
"But punk is nothing new." "Well, you think wrong." "What's new about punk?" "I don't know, but you still think wrong." Fucking greatest answer in the history of mankind.
Oh no,that is what I thought the whole time too when I see him young,I said to myself is:Johnny you looked so great, sexy and awesome when you was young;-)
+Ripley2190 To you?Sid died on the 02th of february 1979,when did you saw them? Was you a child and on the christmasparty in Huddersfield 1977(for free) or where were Johnny and Sid cute to you?I wish I could met Sid but when he died I was nearly 8 years old but I am from Germany and the first time 1985 in England/London....couple of years too late....
Its great seeing John in interviews when he was young. There wasn't anybody quite like him at the time. Its not the same watchin him in interviews now all these years later and he is still sayin the same things over and over again. I still like to listen to him even today but in his younger days he was so ahead of his time.
@@simongill4715 Well, it's really wasnt. Punk was a common term, dating back hundreds of years. It was usually used to refer to something if it didn't work right, or there was something wrong/not ideal about it. For example, "Punk wood", for example, was used to the crumbly, sodden wood that burned out almost instantly that you'd find around a dead trunk. Punk was just given to us as a negative term. And we adopted it to make it our own, as a big "FUCK YOU" to anyone who used it as an insult against us.
'i don't give a shit what you think, i know what i think and thats all that counts' that should be recorded as one of the greatest quotes of all time. rock on johnny rotten!
"You must understand, in my life, I don't pick my friends according to them suiting my taste. We pick and choose each other 'cause we can argue intellectually about anything and everything. Therefore, everything is possible and life extremely entertaining. Never ever, ever find yourself in a group with friends who agree with you. You will have the worst life possible." - John Lydon
I know I'm one out of millions for saying this, but this interview is definitely inspirational. He's only blunt and rough when he needed to be and wasn't even over the top with it. Very to the point, calm, and empowering. I've always loved the Sex Pistols, but love em even more after hearing Johnny talk.
To this day people are still too dumb and ignorant to get where John was/is coming from and think he does/says things for shock and attention. I fuckin' love ya Rotten.
Johnny is brilliant. His responses are quick, witty, and very straight to the point. He can make such amazing quotes to live by, and for as young as he was in '77, he was very aware and very intelligent.
That was one hell of an interview! I am amazed at how brilliant Johnny Rotten really was. My favourite quote from here is the "I don't give a shit of what you think" that just RULED!
Johnny has the amazing ability to make every interviewer feel like an idiot. Even back in the 70's. Brilliant man. The world is a better place because of him.
This interview was part of a 20 minute long reportage about Punk in London that I made for Dutch Television. Maybe it is difficult to understand for fans that the interview was so good because of my questions.
I want to ask John "Have you found a better word for freedom yet?" Plus i love how the whole time he's giving attitude to this interviewer, he's making a handkerchief hat.
He said in an interview that he has never been against commercialism as long as there are good reasons behind it. Such as funding your music and if you like the product that is being advertised.
This is probably the best Rock interview ever...the typical interviewer going on about how the "normal world" figures out anyone who is slightly different and the response is perfect "don't try to box me, in fact don't even talk to me"...because on that type of interview you Don't really get nothing out of it, you just empty yourself for the fun of someone who wants to see "the zoo".Very inteligent and cool...Johnny was and is!Seminal period with seminal characters.
gotta love his brutally honest attitude what a legend everyone just says hes full of shit but hes just like any normal person. if someones harassing you for answers and its annoying you dont exactly just stand there you tell them exactly what you think about them.
Johnny is the shit. I love him.. He’s talented, stylish, non nonsense in your face, him and Sid ( though he couldn’t play bass for shit, but he says out loud what a lot of think in our heads. We wish we could, some people do, but Johnny does what Johnny wants period!
What is missed by many in this interview is that John posed the question "Am I not entitled to what I want with my body?" in a way that comes off mocking. Women go on an on about having a right to do what they want with their bodies, but men's rights are ignored
Its too bad everything has to be so trendy in life. The 60's are my favourite time to be alive. By the 70's people turn to punk to keep it going but it comes off as some kind of cult at the time. Was peace and love just a trend? Was fighting for your freedom just a fad? Its one thing to believe in a cause but its another to never stop your beliefs and stick with them. To this day John still fights on. Even at the age he is now you can say he has mellowed but after seeing a video of him taking a bottle to the face in Chile id have to say he is one tough SOB. Cheers to you John and I hope your relaxing somewhere not having to answer all the difficult questions in life anymore and just saying bullocks to it all!!!
johhny was such a pain in the ass, no wonder everyone (in the band) grew tired of him so quickly, can you imagine having to deal with that attitude all day every day?
Actually his attitude is brilliant in this interview. Thoughtful, independent, think-outside-the-square, and wonderfully fuck you! Which is exactly what most interviewers deserved. He became a pain in the arse latter on, when his ego was obviously out of control.
I think he does know a better word for freedom. Obviously so. Listen to his lyrics before this interview and view the snide contempt in his smile as he acts as though he doesn't want ANARCHY!

such a good fucking quote. i wish more people thought that way.

The reporter was actually great in the way he was able to tease out Lydon's brilliance and thus the best rock interview the world has ever seen.
I don't know if it was intentional but the end result is great
I like that he went for the "I think you're trying to shock people" statement.
