Congrats for Sweden, that's an awesome machine! And thank's for the cooperation so far with Brazil and Embraer. Who knows a super Jet can be developed by Saad and Embraer, together, in the future? :D
Reminds me of use of the F-4 Phantom and A-7 in Germany. They were design as carrier capable aircraft from the get go, thus they were great at operations on the Autobahn. I hope the Gripen finds new markets, it's a great plane!
For all you brasilian people watching this video, you won't get this aircraft. You will get a much more upgraded, perfected version of it. This is most likely an Jas 39 A/B. The ones you'll get are the latest Jas 39 E/F.

You can still have whatever opinion of war materiel, as an individual.Fighter aircraft blow my mind for the reason you stated - It's a piece of state of the art aero engineering built for the purpose of defeating others like it. I'm not saying it's not crazy, but it sure is fascinating to me.
All our fellow Europeans could learn something from our Swedish friends, that we can still use hardend roads for cars, and use it as runway when needed.I always find that amazing!
These babies regularly do practice routines where I live. You rarely see them with the naked eye, but the thunder from when they light the afterburner is unmistakable. But when you do happen to catch a glimpse of them (don't blink or you'll miss 'em) they are some incredibly sexy aircraft!

However it´ll be interesting to see what the NG will bring.

@@affegpus4195 Quite a few F-35s have crashed since I made this comment. That said, there are over a thousand F-35s delivered flying all over the planet in like 20 air forces. There have been 9 Gripen hull losses. Only 158 are actually in service currently. There have also been about 9 F-35 hull losses, out of well over a thousand aircraft in service currently. There's a few more accidents for each aircraft that did not result in hull loss or pilot death. Overall, I don't think we can really conclude Gripen is safer when F-35s are flying an order of magnitude more hours in a dozen more air forces than Gripen. F-35 passed 500,000 flight hours in 2022, Gripen passed 143,000 in 2010. If you multiplied the 2010 Gripen number by 3, you'd get 429,000 flight hours as a generous estimate of current Gripen fleet total flight hours. F-35 definitely has more time in the sky, both back in 2022 and especially now. F-35 is probably safer.
@klote2314 actually both the Russian and the US air forces consider both the Rafalé and the Gripen as semi-stealth fighters. They both actually have lower Heat/IR readings than that of the F-22 and they both have fairly small Radar signatures compared to that of the F-16, F-15, F-18, Su-27, MiG-29 or the MiG-35. I'm not sure of the Rafalé, but the radar signature of a JAS 39C is that of a person. A 39 NG will have that of a chicken. The F-22 has that of a small bird.
Based on Cold War requirements of rapid re-supply and take-off from unprepared runways (e.g. normal roads) but hey...what's wrong with that if it leads to a versatile low maintenance AND domestically developed world-class fighter aircraft? Quality aircraft - great work Sweden.
@MIXMASTAPWN - mainly the idea that it can operate from slightly modified road sections. I don't think the weather (its not that cold, really :-) has anything to do with it. But as it is now, the decision will probably be based on which of the 3 contenders (JSF, F-18 Super Hornet and Gripen) will provide the Norwegian/Danish governments with the biggest return-order - "We'll buy your planes if you buy our stuff"... :-)

I find it interesting that no one have mentioned the Gripen's Ericsson radar, which from the bits and pieces I've heard is something of a marvel, especially considering the size of the plane itself.
They've flown in mock combat a couple of times, if you believe the internet. However, I've been unable to find any concrete information regarding training excercises between these aircraft yet.
Typhoon does have an advantage in engine power and number of weapons stations for sure, but I believe the Gripen has a smaller RCS and also a small advantage in adapting new weapons systems more easily.
@ARKIEX That is BS. The Gripen AESA radar was created and built on its own by SAAB Microwave Systems (SAAB Aero Space). The only american part is the Engine which is Volvo Aeros own modified version of the Hornet engine. And hence I talked to the press secretary at SAAB Gripen for India last week, Gripen is still in the contest and the embargo problem is since long solved. McDonald Douglas has already signed a contract with SAAB on a possible purchase of 136 engines (10 spares).
When I was lucky enough to live in 'Svealand' the population was about 7.75 million and Sweden had the 4rth largest air force after (in jet fighter numbers) after China (1rst), Russia (2nd), USA (3rd). As long as Saab is the choice of many foreign air forces they can stock pile these weapon platforms. And to think Sweden hands out the Nobel prize for various sciences. I have read they have the most advanced air force in the world. Considering who they know it is not hard to believe...
@klote2314 - you're right on that, but stealth is something that radar technology will eventually cope with - every smart move spawns an equally smart counter-move. Happy easter
@ohaiguyzz not 30mm, but 27mm and some MICA and meteor robots ;) it's also good to have some supplies everywhere in case of a swedish hunter runs out of ammo :)
@rock3tcat I agree, the F-35 is just going to be a plane with a high maintenance cost that doesn't or nearly out performs already operational planes like the F-16, Eurofighter, Saab Gripen, Mirage Rafale and F-18 Super Hornet.
I bet the Gripen can do a non-catapult assisted takeoff from the deck of any US carrier, I'm wondering if a "navalized" version could be made without much structural modification. The F404/F414 series engines have proven they can operate well at sea. a Marine-Gripen would be the best bang for the buck for any nation wanting to build a naval air arm. Y
@klote2314 - the version of JSF that Norway and Denmark is getting (perhaps) is not the VTOL-version - this is only for the US Marines. While the JSF is a cool plane, the Gripen will be far more suitable for Scandinavian conditions. :-)
Thats why the " old " plane JA-37 Viggen was painted with a camouflage pattern . So that it could hide easily in the woods, close to the "road-runways !

In peace time they use air bases naturally, but the first thing that happens when you go to war is the enemy sends 100 cruise missiles to destroy as many runways as they can, so it's a very useful feature.
I agree that the SAAB is a good plane. People on here don't understand however what the JSF is. The United States has a huge advantage over the Russians and Chinese in fighter numbers. US has 3043 fighters to Russia's 1264. Huge advantage, so to counteract this the Soviets have many SAM sites. Russian S-300's, and S-400's are good too. We need stealthy planes like the JSF and F-22 to break the backbone of these SAM sites. Places where other planes would not dare fly due to easy detection.
Best compact design for Remote Airfields... To refuel & rearm 15 min max, compare F-16 min 45 and usually longer - Gripen is completly new quality of todays modern battlefield. F-16 Remote Airfields CANNOT perform.
The Republic of Singapore Air Force did this last year with F-16C Block 52s and F-15SGs. All their aircraft have tail hooks, and they put these systems on random highways and it works beautifully. Deal with it.
I really like philosophy of the way how Airfor bases in scandinavian are builed; somewhere always in forest ;). Really cool implanted.. Much diff. feeling when we look at broad and wide USAF`Bases. Am not sure, which way i would like more? ;)
South Africa bought this, but I'm really not sure if it was a good idea. We could probably have gotten upgraded F16s off of the Americans and they could carry more weapons, as well as fly further. The easy maintenance and the STOL capabilities are the only things that really impressed me about the whole thing. Seriously, when are we going to need datalink and stealth tech vs any African countries?
You know that Gripen is in alaska and performing combat training with the usa? Us have difficult too lock on the gripen with the figters, the contract was 1 year, but the extended it with one more... Gripen performs very well in air to air combat.. Not many that know that..
@ARKIEX The EF is the most expensive one to maintain, to repair and to fly. It wont get any connections with Brazil (Who also has the SAAB erieye radar like Pakistan and could learn it's weaknesses and strengths) and could loose missile development together. It's only fairly good in air-ground and air-sea surface. It's maneuverability is only better than that of the Gripen and Rafalé at Supersonic speeds in which less than 5 percent of all dogfights occur.
No, but I did also kinda mean in a cost effective way. The Gripen is inexpensive compared to it's main rivals and would be an ideal aircraft in the RAF. And since Britain has already helped SAAB market the Gripen abroad, we will already be familiar with it's systems and weaponry. Look at the joint venture we have with the Meteor.
@Swecan76 Actually Sweden never had the largest fleet of aircraft in the airforce. In the 50's Sweden was 4'th however, only behind the USA, USSR and Great Britain. Compared to the jet fighters those countries had, the Swedish J29 Tunnan was a world class fighter jet, and for a short while it held some speed record. However Sweden did have the largest airforce in the world compared to its number of inhabitants. Since Sweden was neutral it needed to defend itself.
Is that really true, because that would be awesome scores for Gripen. Heard even that the hungarians gunned down a Typhoon during Red Flag Italy using Gripen.
@OnlyLifeMatters well to be fair, the Charlie Gripen and the Charlie Rafalé has both beaten the Typhoon pretty badly in various exercises. So far the count is 2-0 to the Gripen and 8-1 to the Rafalé. But the Eurofighter has much better air-ground capabilities with a much larger payload and at the moment a somewhat better radar (but the NG (E/F) AESA radar has more available targets and a much better radius and maximum length). Not to mention Gripen/Rafalé has lower Heat/IR/Radar signatures.
Yes they have a long history, the first swedish jetfighters where designed by Heinkel and Kurt Tank. Sweden was aible to remain neutral during the cold war because of it's strong defense, and we didn't loose like the US in Vietnam. Still today we are no anglosaxon pet's as all the rest of Europe.
I have heard that a Gripen won a 1 on 1 against a Typhoon in a recent exercise but I have not confirmed it so I would just take that as hearsay, but I would not be surprised. I would not be surprised if the other way was true either.
Ichinin, i just wanted to say, it can do much better then f/e very expensive eurofighter. Poland selected F-16, i think the Gripen would be better... I like f-16 too. Its the real multirole jet, and it looks damn sexy ;)
F-22 is a great aircraft which is to expensive for its own good. JAS is a great aircraft which is cheap, and is suited for most countries. It´s also a jack of all trade aircraft and could be a great complement to other more specialized aircrafts.
@nor888vast695 the US navy has been working on rail guns, these guns fire a non explosive warhead [3.2 Kilogram]at 2.4 Kilometers a second or about Mach 7.A very small warhead[no explosives] will knock the turrent right off a tank.A new gun is capable of Mach 10,a projectile the size of 2 fingers will destroy anything it hits.
I am a Czech and proud about our Air Force because of gripens. Our fighter squadron won NATO Tiger Meet exercise

Seriously, when are we going to need datalink and stealth tech vs any African countries?
1 of the best thing by Sweden besides IKEA. Saab Grippen. What a Sexy Aircraft.
anyone agree?
You know that Gripen is in alaska and performing combat training with the usa? Us have difficult too lock on the gripen with the figters, the contract was 1 year, but the extended it with one more... Gripen performs very well in air to air combat.. Not many that know that..
SAAB Gripen / Eurofighter Typhoon / Rafale / J -10 Are very similar type off aircraft, right?
that sure is a beauty
What a sexy aeroplane! 🇸🇪
@Swecan76
Actually Sweden never had the largest fleet of aircraft in the airforce.
Actually i expected the AOA to be 15-16 degrees, landing at 120 - 130 knots, since this video is about the STOL capabilities.
Our country bought 26,they are awesome aircraft
This beautiful bird gives you the best bang for the buck among all the western fighters!
Yes they have a long history, the first swedish jetfighters where designed by Heinkel and Kurt Tank. Sweden was aible to remain neutral during the cold war because of it's strong defense, and we didn't loose like the US in Vietnam. Still today we are no anglosaxon pet's as all the rest of Europe.
great vid, amazing that it can land on a street.
You don't want to do a dragraca against this plane :p
I believe it already is. It may not be able to take off of one, but it can land on a carrier.
wow, respect
@OverlordXenuAnon what? The nobel Peace price is handed out in Norway, because back then, Norway was a part of Sweden under Swedish Rule.
I have heard that a Gripen won a 1 on 1 against a Typhoon in a recent exercise but I have not confirmed it so I would just take that as hearsay, but I would not be surprised. I would not be surprised if the other way was true either.
Thats pritty good, you can land in on a highway in a forest, have enemy craft fly over you, and take off having the element of surprise :P
@rock3tcat I agree, but the F-35 is stealthy, and yes it is important, gives the pilot a little advantage,a small window to hit the target and get out.
