Gripen - Always combat ready

  • The key to operational effect is to get fighters airborne when needed. That’s why Gripen is designed to make sure that availability is maximized at all times. A Gripen force can operate from small airfields or even highway when no runways are available. For instance, Gripen can operate from a road strip of only 16 x 800 metres. In this film you will get more information what makes Gripen always combat ready.

We were convinced to buy this as a security feature for the summerhouse. It looked so cheap compared to alternative 5-th generation fighter jets. (Also you can use your golf course for a runway!) The maintenance is really simple, you or your gardener can do it on site, without constant negotiation for spare parts with a dealership like F22 or need to decipher russian manuals (a nightmare!) as for a MiG . Also, as all Swedish vehicles it has every possible safety feature including child seats as a standart!
We were quite happy with it for about a year, its really great for obliterating privacy invading drones and tacky annoying hot air baloons. but now we have grown some ambitions of power projection and its range of 3000km's feels really limiting as it does not have carrier compatibility!
My verdict: Quite good as your first fighter jet. but lacks in stealth and upgrade capabilities. 8/10.

You also will have more pilons for all of your needs. From Air to Air to Air to Ground. Honestly a great second plane if you ask me. 9/10

If you swap the five recruits by five seasoned support guys, the rearm and refuelling can drop to 8 minutes; best time so far was 7:36. Saab support is super responsive, Swedish level of care and attention. One of my air-to-air missile came with a small defect, I could not fit it. After a support call, I got a missile replacement after 48 hours! The tools are quite good; the stand and pilot stairs are from Ikea, you can easily fold it and store in your garage. It's not the fanciest in the market, but it's surely the best cost-benefit.

Their S-300 anti air system we'd probably saturate with our Astros-2020 MLRS, but we don't really have our own anti air against high, fast targets such as fighter jets and missiles, our ground anti air are only against helicopters, so we rely too much on our good old F-5Ms... The US has a huge budget, plenty of trained technicians and no conscripts, so they work from that. They have the most sofisticated, but also delicate, planes. But that does not matter when they can operate from carriers or land bases far from the conflict zones.
Russia meanwhile make more rugged planes, their planes would not mind using a grass airfield (with all the debris that comes with that), so it is virtually impossible to destroy their infra structure.
Sweden had a conscript military when Gripen was designed, planned to use road as runways (as shown in the video) and as always, keeps a middle ground. But more importantly, Sweden has very few people, so the ground crew (regardless if they are conscripts or full time engineers) has to be small,. and we are better off with two small single seaters than one double seater.
So there are differences in how different countries have built their air force. I suppose Sweden has good value for money, Russia has things that are rugged and tough while the US does pack the most punch (until they break down for lack of spare parts).

We know this is a commercial for Saab and the Gripen, but what it says is valid and true. A jet fighter that can operated in dispersed areas, be combat ready in short order is what a modern Air Force really needs. Forget the overpriced and overrated stealth jewel box. The Saab Gripen is well suited for a variety of combat conditions in harsh climates and can be combat ready in a very short time. The multiplier benefit of such a warplane cannot be overestimated and it is still more affordable than some other choices out there.
