Love your channel, My son and I are gar fishing all over the north Houston area, your techniques have been very helpful, we have yet to land a monster but after seeing your videos thats what were after.. you have reinvigorated my love for fishing after 10 years.
I'm glad you guys enjoy them. Good luck!
I’m from North side too. Do you have any good spot recommendations? I prefer creeks or ponds but anything will do
@3amfreestyle895 San Jacinto river under I 45 in Conroe lots of space to set up and look around easy car access opposite side from the dirt bike track
Spring creek under I 45 some bank fishing and easy car access
Generally any creek or river that's coming from a lake or reservoir of any size will most likely have gar quite a few ponds and lakes next to rivers and creeks get flooded during heavy rain and have fish trapped in them you can find soke pretty large gar in some very small ponds as a result
I found a pond half a football field in size and it's full of gar they spawn there too, there is everything from 6 inch gar, 12 inch gar to 4and 5 footers, there very active but won't take cut bait like tilapia or anything besides bluegill or maybe large shad .
There used to be a 6 foot at least gar in this lake and it was flushed out during a flood, quite a unique lake it's fed by a creek and is 15+ ft deep in the middle but only maybe 5 or so car lengths wide, tons of timber fall, so far in all my time fishing there I have caught bluegill, Goliath crappie, gar, largemouth bass, bowfin, blue catfish, channel catfish, cast nets yield shad if I don't get snagged and alligators have been spotted as well.
Point being if you can find bodies of water like the lake next to the Sanjacinto river @ I 45 in Conroe next to the dirt bike track you can fish the river and it floods massively into the adjacent lake which has a diverse amount of hungry fish.
For me gar is the deep sea fish equivalent to freshwater size wise, I have yet to get a 4-5 footer and would love to.
Good luck and if you check out any of the spots I listed let me know
@wildlifefishingshow any ideas why a gar would not take a cut bait if tilapia or large shad I tried for weeks 3 x a week , I can see them sticking there tails out of the water not to slap the water but it looks like there diving down, and if course quite a bit of surface activity like air gulping.
I have tried fishing on light bobbers with a foot of line below with the bait and also Un weighted bottom fishing
It seems like I can only get them to bit if a swim the cut bait across there face which is hard when water is about 2 inches visibility, other days you can sight cast for them but then they will not take the bait, I tired dead shad as well this is in a lake a less than half a football field long and about 4-5 car lengths wide, it's infested with gar of all sizes any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I have been fishing here since I was 16 years old and am now in my late 30s I just want to catch and release one of these elusive larger gar in the lake. I fish around 10 am all say till 4 pm sometimes they nibble but spit the bait, I have hooked up on one in the distant past with whole bluegill and recently a 2 footer on a 1 inch dead shad I was swimming in front of it's face.
@grunge-mb9sb based on this info, it sounds like they are going for live bait. Try live bluegill and shad under a float, and I bet the bit picks up real fast.
I came from your camera on a gar video. Subscribed because of how well you treat the fish and how engaging the content is
Much appreciated 🙏
Hey man, I got a spot for ya. I grew up in the northwest side of Houston. There is a cool fishing spot by a creek surrounding a neighborhood called Cutten Green (it's right by 11 below brewery). Since I grew up there, I caught multiple types of fish there. It's worth checking out!
I grew up in that neighborhood
We used to catch turtles in the bayou..
There used to be nutria
Snake, snails, gars, this could be the makings of a horror flick, lol. Mr snake wasn't ready for his closeup. Apple snails and their egg deposits, learned something new.
The snake was a harmless plain belly water snake
All super cool to see
I think it is impossible for you to upload as much as I would like. The channel is awesome. I have not seen a video that made me disappointed from your channel. I even share the channel to friends who fish. Keep it up, stay hydrated. Looking forward to the next video.
Very much appreciated! Regular uploads have been particularly difficult with all the flooding this year.
It's awesome how such beautiful fish can live in such diverse locations. Great video, hoping this weather starts to clear up soon but it looks like the next few days will be rough. Can't wait for the next video!
Yeah, I got caught in a pretty bad storm yesterday but still managed to get a good film done.
You were feeling a little froggy that day! Nice exploring job!
I like your new style of 🎣 vlog and that energy! Keep it up ⚡ 💯
Trying to quicken the pace
I liked the goofy reference 😂
See you came down the road from me. The dog is my neighbors, he doesn't bother with anyone but the owners.
Does he have a name?
Not sure of his name
@@wildlifefishingshow...which do you like the most, brooks or creeks?
@@ErthBeer I don't really think we have any brooks in South Texas
@@wildlifefishingshow....that's awful.
You should check out Clear Creek in League City. There’s some really decent gar, s well as blue cats, and redfish. Used to run jugs out there in my kayak at night. Seriously fun
Off East nasa pkwy??
@@josueveroblanco8822 yep. Off Egret Bay Blvd(270)
Ummmm, where in Houston are you fishing at? I'm in Tomball...
Awesome video, this motivates me to try catching gar under a bobber. Although there’s only long nose where I’m at in VA
Longnose are super cool. I was trying to get one from that bridge but couldn't.
All good spots over here in cypress especially that creek over on telge
I saw the Iguana hunter show where those eggs dropped into the water will kill the eggs as an invasive species, found all along inland waterways in FL.
Glad to see hydration. Been experimenting with powder electrolyte powders myself.
I've been using those powder packs to my water after I go for my daily walks.
That was great to see, thanks! One thing I have to say - you seem to pick up everything with your bare hands, and I especially worry about you getting some nasty bacteria under your nails then into your eyes or even mouth. Be careful o ut there, Bro!
Ha, yeah it's bound to happen at some point.
Great vid! Getting extremely hot in Houston already! my gopro keeps overheating smh
I can see you out there in full bee keeper garb 😆
If those gnats get bad enough I might!
I have seen those Snails in the Northern Virginia while fishing or Snakeheads.
Interesting. I didn't know they made it over that way.
Any suggestions on spots in NW Houston?
hey payton what was the second park you went to where you lost the longnose gar
The title says it's a secret!
As for south Texas río grande valley been struggling to find gar at all would you have tips for scouting waters
I used to run there. Great spot and great video. Thanks!!
Same! It's a great area.
Nice alligator gar we don't have them in Jersey lol
Hi, anny idea how old the first gar on this vid was and how fast they grow ? Just wanna have a idea how old the 6 food gar you catched was ... ? If they eat all rotten food and dead fish they verry imortant in the ecosystem. !
Great video man, love the adventures
Appreciated 🤙
I'm looking for places to catch small fish, that would be good for a natives fish tank fir my classroom. Any suggested places for mollies, minnows, etc?
Well done!
Much appreciated
Hopefully that crazy storm cools the weather down 😂😂
Got caught in a pretty crazy storm today. The temperature dropped something like 15 degrees in five minutes, but I'm sure it will go right back up by tomorrow.
Thank you for these videos! I am pretty new to Houston (8-9 months) and literally live 2-3 blocks from Lake Houston. I haven't had much luck at the lake yet, but I've only gone a few times. Also, being a natural XX chromosome recipient, and identifying as such, it's hard finding people who will fish with me 😒 Anyway, I moved here from San Diego where I would regularly fish the San Diego River and Mission Bay. I found that big mouth bass really like mice. I'd shoot them with a pellet rifle and use them for bait. On the bay, I'd fish for sea bass using squid and smoked oysters. Problem is sting rays like it too 😅
Were you prior military? Also I know what you mean about nature being unpredictable sometimes, especially Houston summer.. it’ll drain you quick, but the adventure is always a blast.
@@BryanDennisonBryansGaming no, definitely not prior military. I come from the zoo and aquarium world.
@@wildlifefishingshow gotcha, that’s really cool. I’ve always loved wildlife too, I like your fishing grind and appreciate the respect you give to animals.
Where is this spot at?
You can drive over 100 miles just on the highway 99 that goes around Houston.
Nice video. I look forward to your videos
Much appreciated, got one done today for this weekend
I use to catch a lot of needle nose gar of course alligator gar everywhere but needle nose gar or few and far between now for some reason!!!!! 🇺🇲
Did you pick up a water moccasin? Wow. Ball of steel
No, just a water snake
Not sure I could tell the difference. Try a spray based on lemongrass. It'll keep those gnats away.
I sat in on a seminar with Lance Armstrong's hydration powder called "scratch labs". One thing worth noting that you may not be aware of is that you need a certain amount of sugar to cross the blood brain barrier. their lemon lime powder is probably the best electrolyte powder I've ever had, and I've had most of the ones available in Texas and Colorado bc my wife runs the healthy living department at an HEB, and before that she worked for Whole Foods doing the same job for 12 years. The Bucked Up brand actually has a really good orange mango powder as well that we buy when the heb healthy living department does their quarterly 25% off everything sale.
Yeah, Lance Armstrong's hydration powder might have a light extra somethin, lol
that second spot in sugar land looks like
Always interesting
I try 🤙
-tell more about bait, and rig. do a catch and cook. dont catch it in the heat and cook in the heat. catch it, take home, clean and cook. are any of those fish edible ? i really enjoy your content. i have also fished those bayous and creeks. my favorite is near hwy 6 and the west park tollway. good luck keep up the awesome content.
I wouldn't eat anything from the Houston area. Definitely check out the alligator gar rig in the description of the video, it's my own design.
You need a canopy or a tarp for shade
I move around a lot, but that Shemagh can become a canopy if I unravel it.
What kind of snake did he pick up ??
What type of hook are those small gar hooks?
I took a treble off of a Mirrolure twitch bait
Bro put me on to some bank spots in Houston and Conroe 🥲
The bayou
Anyway we could get the names or locations of the creeks?
All on my Patreon
Can you do a live soon I love your lives
Probably, depends on what's going on.
I need the locations,lol
Do you think any of these are safe to eat?
@@joelb138 probably not
Where are these creeks/channels? I will be relocating to the Houston area, hopefully soon and would like to give it a try. Nice vids!
almost like river monsters but not quite
That's more than I can ask for, honestly
❤
🤙
Get one of those head nets that go over a hat. After 2 years of being forced by the government to rebreathe my exhaled air, I'm not wearing a mask again.
Lol
Trevor outside?
I don't know anyone named Trevor 🤷♂️
Do you share location
The locations I share are mapped out in detail on my Patreon (link in description)
What creeks are you fishing? I would like to take my grandson
Just moved to west Houston from Florida, hoping to catch some gar in these canals.
may b ur system isnt sending the right message id get that checked yo
I have no idea what you're talking about
o u said something about passing out r something may b i herd ya wrong idk
Get a beekeepers hat to keep the gnats away.
Ha, that might be a bit much
@@wildlifefishingshow well they also make regular baseball hats that are camouflaged that have a camouflaged netting that comes down over your face and neck. These hats are used for turkey hunting to disguise your eyes and everything else because turkeys have Excellent eyesight and can see your eyes move or when you open your mouth or whatever little movement your face makes. One of those would work well and be much cheaper. I've used one before and it worked very well.
Who runs to grab a snake by the tail 🤔
@georgewilson2443 most of us from the zoo and aquarium world
@wildlifefishingshow I like the zoo and the aquarium. Some snakes are beautiful but I don't fool with them.
No way! It’s Clear Creek!
Edit: Ahh.. I guess it’s not 😔
Oyster creek
shouldnt u destroy those invasive apple snails and their eggs?
r just drink h20 with out the extraz
Sometimes you need the extraz
you must be an alpha
No such thing
I've live in Houston all my life, the bayous and creeks there have all been polluted. Most have been cleaned up. Still, I would not eat anything caught there.
This is all catch and release
First
Reliable
I can never land a gar. They have such bony mouths. I've seen people use a short length of nylon rope that they've brushed out as a lure. The gar's teeth get snagged in the rope almost like velcro. I haven't had luck with that either but I think it's the presentation.
That definitely works on the smaller species. How to hook a gar depends entirely on what species you're talking about. What you can and can't do changes dramatically between smaller and larger varieties.
