We have sampled that stretch of Brays Bayou and have captured huge blue cats, channel cats, tilapia, grass carp, gar, armored catfish, mullet, American eel, and a few sunfish and bass. People don’t realize how many fish are in these urban bayous.
Living a block away, we hung out all the time in brays bayou as pre-teens and teens in the 60’s. Didn’t fish but we caught a lot of turtles…soft shell and snappers.
I spent my Youth Fishing By myself most if not all the time,in the bayous of Houston. Raised my son fishing the Bayous in and near downtown. The pond area at White Oak bridge just West of I45 is a great spot, but be careful of the tall grass if you venture off the bridge. Saw the fattest Cottonmouth I've ever seen in my life sunning himself on a dirt shelf. Like literally 3 feet long, but as fat around as my thigh. The Pond at Herman Park next to the zoo has 36" catfish too.
What are the cross streets you were fishing between? I live in Houston on Braes Bayou and used to net fish out of it as a kid. We’d catch gar mostly. Our moms would make us bring them back after we carried them home in buckets full of water. They were incredibly resilient and we never had any die. It’s been 45 years since that last bayou fishing fun but I’d love to go out and catch a few. Looks like you’re maybe somewhere around where Buffalo Speedway crosses but it’s hard to tell. We always played between Scott and Calhoun.

That big blue was nice. On another note, that is very dangerous fishing a deep concrete decline like that. I almost drowned years ago fishing on something similar in Dallas at Whiterock Lake. Be careful brother. Tight lines!
I can extremely relate to this video because I’ve also fallen into the body before and my leg got cut up from the concrete as I was slipping down into the water and it took me a while to get out but a week later I had a major skin infection that ruined my whole summer😢 So I found a new strategy for getting my fish out from the water without falling in with them and it’s shoving a steak into the ground and attaching a rope to it and letting it dangle all the way to the waters edge, and whenever I need to land of fish, I just walk down there and hold the rope in one hand and have the fishing rod and another and so far it worked out great!!!👍
@@wildlifefishingshow I believe I commented on another video that you were strange but make good videos. You were polite about it. No big deal man just saying another good video.
I wouldn’t fish in the Delaware anyways. Especially with the runoff from the Schuylkill and the waste treatment plants upstream. Those are definitely catch and release areas😅
I have a method for getting out of the water on a concrete bayou. I once fell into the bayou, Brickhouse Gully (concrete sides) in Houston's northwest side, when the water level was near the top bank (rushing water). At first I used my hands for about a few seconds (that did not work). I did not panic and I body rolled up the concrete at about 30 degrees relative to the water's edge. My clothes were able to adhere to the concrete surface. I simply body-rolled out the Brickhouse Gully. That was 35+ years ago. Secondly, To prevent sliding on wet concrete banks, glue some old carpet (carpet-side down) onto some old worn-out hiking boots and wear those boots on the wet concrete banks. The slipping issue is resolved.
The good news is that you aren't taking these fish home and frying them up in a pan. That old saying 'You are what you eat' holds true, and I wouldn't eat anything that comes out of those nasty bayou's. GREAT video though!
Hey good to be back to watch your shows again, I really missed watching my most favorite fishing channel on here, wanna apologize for missing your shows but I have them all saved on a playlist I made so I can catch up, my family and I ran into to a string of unfortunate events back to back and I got messed up from pneumonia and a terrible infection again in my lung for the fourth time which is hard on me via me having a really bad dust lungs, love your shows and can't wait to catch up🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Know your terrain, those bayous are designed with a steep grade in order to promote fast removal of water. It also has two different components in its design which is a flat bottom and then another narrow squared ditch in the very middle. Out side fear, should you fall in , if you would immediately stood up the water would in most cases be below your waist . Remember that the bottom is covered with slippery algae in most cases . Unless it has been immediately after a heavy rain this is normally the case.
What a great video showing the variety of species you can catch in these city bayous! I'm glad you explained and showed how dangerous this bayou really is. Great video as always and looking forward to what you pull out of there as the weather warms up even more. Also, I did respond to your email in case you didn't receive the notification.
What kind of net do you use? I’ve seen it on a couple videos looks like it folds up, when you netted the turtle in the creek you said you got holes in your carp net. I am trying to find something decent to use and that new looks the part. Thanks.
What is your mixture you use for the spring feeder? And do you have a video out showing how to make your rig?? Thank you very much for your reply. Just found your channel, and I know I’m going to enjoy it.
It's right around the spawn in Texas, depending on where you are, for channel cats. They'll be full of eggs and hungry if female. Fun to watch someone else fish the flood control in the Houston area. Any fish in the lakes in the area will be in the creeks, bayous, and flood control.
I once had a nightmare about this bayou where i fell in and the found the the deepest part at the center had a 4 foot wide vertical channel going down to what seems like the underworld and on the side of the walls were covered in arms pulling you down and ever deeper into the darkest depths of the channel. Its one of those nightmares that stuck with me. Definitely a New fear unlocked for me
I just started getting into using pack bait with method feeders and it works well. Caught my best channel catfish using it and I have experimented with it alot, even buying small halibut pellets in my recipe which has generated good results. Also great videos you make.
Where is this location!? I’m a north Texas native but visit Houston often. I’ve fished several spots in Houston already (and they’ve been kind to me) and had the brays bayou on my radar but when I went to go check it out (near the zoo) the water seemed very shallow and definitely no where near as murky as that water.
Glad you didn't slip into that water. It's dangerous. Luckily you only broke the handle on the reel, and not the actual reel. Looking forward to the next video.
Hey Bud how are the game wardens out here? And where’s the best places to fish? I haven’t fished that long a couple years I’m just not familiar with Houston
Me and my buddy used to go fishing in bray's bayou in the 70 with nightcrawlers at night and we would catch catfish and carp up to 20 lb and it was a lot of fun!!! Where the cement ends at 59 and it was behind a golf course!!!!!
Random question. I have been out to the river and have had a tough time getting the bait positioned without the current moving it away. We were also using heavy weights. Don’t know if it has to do with the wind or not, or if it’s just usual. How do I find spots without heavy currents?
Get you a set of felt sole wading shoes/boots. They will grip that concrete like glue. We use them wade fishing mountain creeks. You can even add cleats if you want.
If this is a type of fishing you like to do often, I'd highly recommend buying some approach shoes. Approach shoes are what are often used by rock climbers to get them to difficult-to-reach cliff faces. They are a mixture between hiking boots and climbing shoes. Basically a very soft/grippy rubber mounted to a hiking boot. MUCH safer than what you're wearing here.
If standing and walking on the concrete slop is that’s slippery and dangerous, why not fish from the grass? Is it really necessary to walk on the slop?
Hey Payton, Im from San Antonio and im gonna visit houston for a few days. Often I find catching bait is the hardest part of fishing for gar, and I want to have that as a given. Would you be willing to give me the general area or name of this bayou so I could cast net some carp or mullet? I understand if not.
If you want to show people a dangerous secret about fishing in Houston you should do a video on Sims Bayou. That under current ain't no joke and it doesn't take prisoners.
I used to Fish Hog Park, and TC JESTER PARK, also Studewood. Best one was Hogg park under 45 and I-10 Quitman and 45 North behind the old elementary. Great spot but yes, thugs around. Had game wardens chopper land and inspected us !!! Good thing we all had our license
No, this is a natural bayou that predates the city of Houston. The areas around downtown have all of this concrete to increase the speed of flood water drainage.
Need more Bass in these waters. Our house was about 250 yards from one of these ditches. I never fished in it, but caught a huge alligator snapper one time. Dragged that baby home and they weren't laughing anymore.
Not sure, I'd have to find something really big hiding there or a really weird creek. I need something to sell the video. Maybe I'll find a large gar in a creek soon.
I know that carp are an environmental disaster for you in the States but those are some stunningly beautiful fish. I don't envy you the problem but I do envy you the fishing.
Well, only certain species in certain areas of the U.S. Common carp have not been a problem in Texas. On the other hand, big head carp in northern states are a huge problem.

If standing and walking on the concrete slop is that’s slippery and dangerous, why not fish from the grass? Is it really necessary to walk on the slop?
Do you ever eat fish from the canals. There in Houston Texas
This is in Houston and no, definitely wouldn't
great video sir helpful tip there for newbies like me
Hey Payton, Im from San Antonio and im gonna visit houston for a few days. Often I find catching bait is the hardest part of fishing for gar, and I want to have that as a given. Would you be willing to give me the general area or name of this bayou so I could cast net some carp or mullet? I understand if not.
Just heard you say it was Brays Bayou. Haha Thanks anyways.
@brandondumars6896 cast net Brays Bayou where it crosses under 288
I was interested in the fishing but after that fall, I started pondering on how one would get out if fell in!
It's very difficult
Every time you post I get fish fever and start loading up my gear
Relatable
If you want to show people a dangerous secret about fishing in Houston you should do a video on Sims Bayou. That under current ain't no joke and it doesn't take prisoners.
I'm from houston! Where is this spot? I really hope to hear from you
I used to Fish Hog Park, and TC JESTER PARK, also Studewood. Best one was Hogg park under 45 and I-10 Quitman and 45 North behind the old elementary. Great spot but yes, thugs around. Had game wardens chopper land and inspected us !!! Good thing we all had our license
Cool video dude I have family in Houston I'm from lake Charles. Cool vid
Much appreciated
would jetty shoes help with the slipping?
I don't think the cleats would help. Honestly, just gotta stay off the wet areas and algae.
I’ve seen them carps swim n schools along whit oak when I ride the trails. So many of em
It's that braes bayou or white oak?
This that an irrigation canel. I think in McAllen it's not allowed to fish in such canels. There's a lot of these canels close to the citrus groves.
What size hook was that on the first rig?
Not sure, probably a size 2?
Hati-hati bos mancingnya 😊keren sekali spotnya dan ikannya besar-besar juga sangat menyenangkan mancingnya 😊👍👍👍
Thanks!
I use gloves for pack bait, stink bait, livers etc. Any cheap disposable works just fine but good nitrile ones are awesome 👍
I caught a 500 pound bass today ❤I would post it but I’m too busy! Keep it up bill
Decent fish
When are you doing more creek fishing videos?
Not sure, I'd have to find something really big hiding there or a really weird creek. I need something to sell the video. Maybe I'll find a large gar in a creek soon.
Where is this at?
Have you ever tried for bass
Does that recipe work for salt water fish?
Never tried that. I'm sure if you changed the recipe up somewhat it would.
@@wildlifefishingshow Pleased it's not affecting your local waters mate, really hope it stays that way, you have some amazing fish and fishing.
My sister has seen bald eagles in one of the neighborhoods nearby. I assume they're feeding in Braes Bayou and it looks like there's enough fish.
Pretty cool, I'll keep my eyes out for them
