Six years ago, I threw a line into a random bayou running through the heart of Houston and ended up discovering the city's best kept fishing secret: these inner-city bayous are absolutely loaded with all kinds of fish!
Seriously, the vast majority of the city's four million inhabitants have no idea that underneath all the concrete, steel, and glass are fish.

Love the videos bro thanks!!!!
You're the man keep it up 💪🏻🤘🏻💪🏻🤘🏻
Wouldn’t eat the fish u catch there?
@Broken.Native not a chance
I HOPE YOU ARE OKAY BRO 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
@@wildlifefishingshow I suspect that the flesh of the fish is quite polluted. Have you ever had any of them tested for the level of pollutants like dioxin, PCBs & heavy metals?
I’m a professor and teach fish ecology courses. We collect fish in our field classes using nets and electrofishing gear. We have sampled that stretch of Brays Bayou and have captured huge blue cats, channel cats, tilapia, grass carp, gar, armored catfish, mullet, American eel, and a few sunfish and bass. People don’t realize how many fish are in these urban bayous.
It's truly remarkable
Sounds cool.
Did you ever run a chemical analysis?
Looks more like White Oak than Brays.
Living a block away, we hung out all the time in brays bayou as pre-teens and teens in the 60’s. Didn’t fish but we caught a lot of turtles…soft shell and snappers.
Born in raised in Houston and always looking for houston fisherman glad i found your channel
I spent my Youth Fishing By myself most if not all the time,in the bayous of Houston. I used raw bacon, hot dogs, and I would dig for grubs in the compost Piles from the residents who lived on the Bayous. I had alot of fun, catching Bluegill,Bass,Carp,BIG Turtles. But Only when the rain came, and the bayou rose.I would catch Alot of Catfish.Never kept them but it was alot of fun for a Country boy living In the middle of the city.Sorry for rambling, but This video takes me back to the better times of my childhood 💜🙏Thanks for Posting .Tight Lines!
Glad you enjoyed it
I grew up fishing the Katy bayous 😝 the carp are massive! Lots of spotted and long nose gar. Never seen an alligator gar
I always drop a like and leave a comment for a fellow Texan. Good video!
Much appreciated 🙏
Jello, half & half, bread crumbs, corn, mixing bucket, you sure this isn't a Cooking Channel challenge, lol.
I should give it a try in a video, lol
Have you ever tried Dr. Pepper and corn flakes? I've heard it's great carp bait. Also try range cubes to attract catfish
That big blue was nice. On another note, that is very dangerous fishing a deep concrete decline like that. I almost drowned years ago fishing on something similar in Dallas at Whiterock Lake. Be careful brother. Tight lines!
I've fallen in once, very difficult to get out
Here in Philly, the most dangreous fishing along the delaware river isint the landscape...it is the thugs...
I wouldn’t fish in the Delaware anyways. Especially with the runoff from the Schuylkill and the waste treatment plants upstream. Those are definitely catch and release areas😅
Love seeing some carp content again!!
It felt good to catch some again
Love the sounds of nature. *Sirens in the background*
🚑
Near Medical Center possibly?
@@charleseskrigge8267loads of them here, they are always going.
Lived in Houston in the 90s, did a bit of city fishing there. Epic video.
Much appreciated 🤙
Love this guy … catch & release is what I practice
This looks like a ton of fun!! Really enjoyed the video!!
Much appreciated 🙏
@@wildlifefishingshowI bet it’s hell on your feet walking sideways for a period of time.
*NEVER seen anyone release a Bluecat! Good eating...also use an old couch cushion as an anti gravity seat, it's a roofers trick that works on these steep concrete death traps.*
You’d eat out of a city runoff canal
The smell of the water in Brays Bayou is not pleasant, and most of the fishes in Brays Bayou also have the same smell.
@@SirKankusdo people eat the fish from there?
@@Broken.Native probably but you definitely should not I’ve seen homeless people fileting carp right next to piles of trash on a river that smelled like actual wastewater
This water is definitely not clean. I should try the couch cushion trick.
Great stuff glad i found the channel to, thanks for sharing it. Do you ever get any one messing with you?
great video sir helpful tip there for newbies like me
I just started watching your new video and noticed that your rig is the rig that I use to fish for carp at my local pond here in Las Vegas, NV… Awesome…
I appreciate the support! Yeah, it's a good set up.
The grass carp are the best battle in the Bayou. Keep it going, Buddy. Love your content
They are quite the fast fight
Great video
You make urban freshwater fishing look fun and I'm from Houston 🤘😅🎣
I do my best 🤙
Love your videos
Much appreciated 🙏
I agree on having a towel / rag with you
Thanks for sharing. Where is this in Houston?
Funny part i was walking on the sidewalk and i saw you i was shy to say hi but i was just shy😂😂
Always welcome to say hi
Love catching carp pound for pound one of the best fighting fish imo. Im a big catfisher in SW Ohio.
Carp have a great fight 🔥
good stuff
What is your mixture you use for the spring feeder? And do you have a video out showing how to make your rig??
Thank you very much for your reply. Just found your channel, and I know I’m going to enjoy it.
I'm not sure why but the run up to the camera at 2:47 for the safety tip sent me howling 😂
Glad I can entertain
I can extremely relate to this video because I’ve also fallen into the body before and my leg got cut up from the concrete as I was slipping down into the water and it took me a while to get out but a week later I had a major skin infection that ruined my whole summer😢
So I found a new strategy for getting my fish out from the water without falling in with them and it’s shoving a steak into the ground and attaching a rope to it and letting it dangle all the way to the waters edge, and whenever I need to land of fish, I just walk down there and hold the rope in one hand and have the fishing rod and another and so far it worked out great!!!👍
Sounds interesting. I honestly just should have remained disciplined and walked it to one of my three designated landing zones.
Hey good to be back to watch your shows again, I really missed watching my most favorite fishing channel on here, wanna apologize for missing your shows but I have them all saved on a playlist I made so I can catch up, my family and I ran into to a string of unfortunate events back to back and I got messed up from pneumonia and a terrible infection again in my lung for the fourth time which is hard on me via me having a really bad dust lungs, love your shows and can't wait to catch up🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
No worries and best wishes on a speedy recovery
@@wildlifefishingshow thank you very much, it means a lot to see a RUclipsr that does so much to bring us this amazing content and takes the time to reach out to they're subscribers, and that's what separates your channel and makes it "better than all the others"
Good stuff
Thanks
Cool video dude I have family in Houston I'm from lake Charles. Cool vid
Much appreciated
Great day at the bayou ! Close one! Damn near ended up in the drink, again ! I remember when that fish pulled you in, scary !!!
Yeah, I was having flashbacks
I just started getting into using pack bait with method feeders and it works well. Caught my best channel catfish using it and I have experimented with it alot, even buying small halibut pellets in my recipe which has generated good results. Also great videos you make.
Halibut pellets are a great addition
Caught my PB carp on your recipe. Only thing I changed was that I used tuna because the store I went to didn’t have sardines. 47 pound monster. Thanks!
That's an awesome fish!
May I ask what the recipe is that he uses. I have not seen it on the channel. I’m new.
Thank you for your reply
Need more Bass in these waters. Our house was about 250 yards from one of these ditches. I never fished in it, but caught a huge alligator snapper one time. Dragged that baby home and they weren't laughing anymore.
Payton, Just by looking at your phone map app, it appears to me that many of your fishing locations are easily accessible. The bayou ones in particular…. How wonderful Houston must be for fishermen like us! I have fished for over 60 years. I love your work immensely…. Keep on trucking. Ronald, Orlando Fl.
When have you ever seen my phone map app?
Second the roofer safety gear suggestion 👍🏻
I'll look into it
It's right around the spawn in Texas, depending on where you are, for channel cats. They'll be full of eggs and hungry if female. Fun to watch someone else fish the flood control in the Houston area. Any fish in the lakes in the area will be in the creeks, bayous, and flood control.
I might have a go at some larger ones in the creeks soon
I use strawberry jello, grits, vanilla flavoring syrup, bread crumbs and a can of corn… very similar to my mixture… Awesome vid brother…👍👍👍
Sounds like a winner
Just a weird guy from Dallas here. Good video as usual man! Tight lines
Probably better weird than what has become the stereotype conventional norm..
@tadhghayden7601 no idea what you're getting at
Much appreciated
@@wildlifefishingshow I believe I commented on another video that you were strange but make good videos. You were polite about it. No big deal man just saying another good video.
@@Thomas-tc3ox the "much appreciated" reply was for you, the "no idea" reply was for the other guy
I appreciate you tuning in
I use a dyi ramp with 2 10ft rope anchored in the grass....it's a 3ft by 4ft platform....I bring it with me when I go out
Every time you post I get fish fever and start loading up my gear
Relatable
we need more plz
What kind of net do you use? I’ve seen it on a couple videos looks like it folds up, when you netted the turtle in the creek you said you got holes in your carp net. I am trying to find something decent to use and that new looks the part. Thanks.
What are the cross streets you were fishing between? I live in Houston on Braes Bayou and used to net fish out of it as a kid. We’d catch gar mostly. Our moms would make us bring them back after we carried them home in buckets full of water. They were incredibly resilient and we never had any die. It’s been 45 years since that last bayou fishing fun but I’d love to go out and catch a few. Looks like you’re maybe somewhere around where Buffalo Speedway crosses but it’s hard to tell. We always played between Scott and Calhoun.

I caught a 500 pound bass today ❤I would post it but I’m too busy! Keep it up bill
Decent fish
Glad you didn't slip into that water. It's dangerous. Luckily you only broke the handle on the reel, and not the actual reel. Looking forward to the next video.
Ha, yeah, it was a lesser of two evils for sure
I subscribed because of the safety tips, well done. Sorry about the reel ❤
I appreciate it 🙏
Is that the bayou on tc jester?
Hey Bud how are the game wardens out here? And where’s the best places to fish? I haven’t fished that long a couple years I’m just not familiar with Houston
What a great video showing the variety of species you can catch in these city bayous! I'm glad you explained and showed how dangerous this bayou really is. Great video as always and looking forward to what you pull out of there as the weather warms up even more. Also, I did respond to your email in case you didn't receive the notification.
I'll look and see if I missed it.
I use gloves for pack bait, stink bait, livers etc. Any cheap disposable works just fine but good nitrile ones are awesome 👍
Get you a set of felt sole wading shoes/boots. They will grip that concrete like glue. We use them wade fishing mountain creeks. You can even add cleats if you want.
Every now and then, someone will suggest this, and I look it up, then forget to buy them, lol
What power rod are you using here and the spillway video with the gar? That bait/chum setup must be pretty heavy.
Medium heavy rod
Where is this at?
Hati-hati bos mancingnya 😊keren sekali spotnya dan ikannya besar-besar juga sangat menyenangkan mancingnya 😊👍👍👍
Thanks!
Used to fish in the Houston Aquaduct as a kid. It ran right by my house , caught loads of catfish
.... ate all the keepers !
Raised my son fishing the Bayous in and near downtown. The pond area at White Oak bridge just West of I45 is a great spot, but be careful of the tall grass if you venture off the bridge. Saw the fattest Cottonmouth I've ever seen in my life sunning himself on a dirt shelf. Like literally 3 feet long, but as fat around as my thigh. The Pond at Herman Park next to the zoo has 36" catfish too.
Awesome 🤙
Dang! That some huge Catfish!
Drink the corn liquid, it's good tasting and helps with dehydration which you deal with quit often
I'll find something else lol
Random question. I have been out to the river and have had a tough time getting the bait positioned without the current moving it away. We were also using heavy weights. Don’t know if it has to do with the wind or not, or if it’s just usual. How do I find spots without heavy currents?
You want to look for formations on the bank that create eddies
I'm from houston! Where is this spot? I really hope to hear from you
I would not eat anything caught in Braes Bayou, just to let anyone who sees this video and decides to fish there.
I've been quite vocal about this same thing
@@wildlifefishingshow I posted that comment during your video before you said the exact same comment near the end.
I was interested in the fishing but after that fall, I started pondering on how one would get out if fell in!
It's very difficult
Nice video. Cat at 13:11 is a white catfish. White chin whiskers. rest of the cats are dark.
I wonder if cleats would maybe help brother
Do you eat fish? Also do you think there good to eat from the canals or is there to much pollution? TIA. thanks for sharing. Great video
Waaaay too much pollution. Definitely would not recommend.
The poor isopod on the second rock phone
I'm from Houston. Where is this at
When are you doing more creek fishing videos?
Not sure, I'd have to find something really big hiding there or a really weird creek. I need something to sell the video. Maybe I'll find a large gar in a creek soon.
Hell yea when I was a kid me and my friends use to play down there. And if you end up in there your finished that current sucks you down.
It absolutely does, so much more dangerous than people think
What you need are roofers boot covers with the felt souls so you don't slide off. Very cheap and could save your life
I grew up in Corpus Christi. Every time I visited Houston, it was a nightmare. Traffic sucks. It's a concrete jungle with limited life. Also lot's of contamiation in the water and crime is over the top for my taste. I'll take small town living any day..
It was a great place in the 60's and 70's. It may have some ups and downs, but I loved it there. Great place to grow up.
A true fisherman. Love your show. If you ever have the desire to do Alaskan fishing let me know id love to take you Halibut fishing and silver slamming on the way in. Im guessing that water is drainage from sewer? I know nasty ?
This is actually a natural bayou that predates the city itself and only has concrete on the last few miles. There are a few water treatment plants that drain into it, though.
Halibut sounds like a blast
What are those mahi shades I like them
I think I just grabbed them in Academy Sports and Outdoors
you should make videos fishing with them gar rope lures
I might give that a try
@@wildlifefishingshow just made my own and surprisingly works
Have you ever tried for bass
What bait runner reel is that?
Not sure, got it a long time ago from Bigcarptackle.com
Wat reel and rod that's u got the frist 2 fish on
It's a Fox International carp stalking rod. I'm not sure what the reel is, but I got it from Bigcarptackle.com
Ever been to the H‑E‑B (next to 288) upstream of this section of Brays Bayou?
All the time
What size hook was that on the first rig?
Not sure, probably a size 2?
You should bring a tent peg or something to drive in between plates.
I typically do a lot of walking when I fish this area, so I wouldn't want to be limited to a certain spot
I live just a few blocks from Brays bayou at Chimney Rock Rd. One of these days I'll fish it.
Huge fish in here, just be cautious on the slopes.
I'm two blocks in near Rice. For 20+ years I've been tempted to fish it, but I don't trust eating them or the folks who like shiny things
@@wskroll no, I'd not eat anything from any of our bayous either.
This is where I cast net all my mullet. I walk down a little further to the steps though.
Same
Do you ever eat fish from the canals. There in Houston Texas
This is in Houston and no, definitely wouldn't
Braes bayou?
What tape to you used to put on your rods?
I don't think I put tape on my rods?
masking tape on gx2?
@@azgamer7681 I didn't know there was tape on it. It's probably just regular old masking tape.
What do you do about ticks and chiggers in that long grass
I was wondering too.
snakes also and hobos
I haven't had an issue with ticks, I catch snakes when I see them, and the unhoused individuals in this area aren't looking for trouble
He must be immune to chiggers, whereas I began to itch from just seeing those weeds
I know that carp are an environmental disaster for you in the States but those are some stunningly beautiful fish. I don't envy you the problem but I do envy you the fishing.
Well, only certain species in certain areas of the U.S. Common carp have not been a problem in Texas. On the other hand, big head carp in northern states are a huge problem.
@@wildlifefishingshow Pleased it's not affecting your local waters mate, really hope it stays that way, you have some amazing fish and fishing.
This that an irrigation canel. I think in McAllen it's not allowed to fish in such canels. There's a lot of these canels close to the citrus groves.
No, this is a natural bayou that predates the city of Houston. The areas around downtown have all of this concrete to increase the speed of flood water drainage.
would jetty shoes help with the slipping?
I don't think the cleats would help. Honestly, just gotta stay off the wet areas and algae.
I am from the North West and what you call fish we call scavengers.
My grandfather wouldn't even consider Bass a good fish😆😂
And we shot carp with black powder rifles.
I see what you are chumming with, but what bait is on your hook?
Corn. The same corn mixed into the pack bait.
Care to drop the location? I plan to do some fishing today
When are you going to do a Catch Clean Cook video ? LOL
Not really my style
My sister has seen bald eagles in one of the neighborhoods nearby. I assume they're feeding in Braes Bayou and it looks like there's enough fish.
Pretty cool, I'll keep my eyes out for them
The cheapest hot dogs you can find work wonderful and if you cook them in the microwave before you go over cook them it makes the skin really tough and hang on to the hook
Hotdogs work great!
Bro! You need a body anchor!!
Too restricting though
I'm tryna to buy some carp . because I can't seem to find any in local water in the Beaumont,Texas area
Like for an aquarium?
