My friend Andy worked on that picture back in 93. I visited the set twice. Once during the El Paso BBQ scene. I remember Clifton was very cool but he hated the itch that wig and watch cap gave him. The other was the pool scene, Renee, the gal who played Lanie was a real pro and everyone thought this film role would launch her. Guess not. The beach park was filmed at Culver City park near the large ball field. The establishing shot of the two actors walking toward the sand was shot at El Segundo beach; a large tree branch with foliage framing the camera lens. They brought in sand and shot the rest at the park. Hollywood magic! Also they cast local grunge music fans as extras so they would have to stretch the already minuscule budget to recreate the 70s. I thought the film was set in the 90s till I saw it at the Sherman Oaks Galleria. Great vid, great channel!
Ha. There you are in Petro Park. Thank you so much for watching. Any chance you remember where the PV party house was (Muldoons house) ? Or the gas station crump works at.. or the beach? Only clues would be amazing. Thanks again.
I watched this movie 25 times & it never gets old. My favorite running gag or line is when someone says a person's name during a conversation & the other person replies "Who's ...?" then they always reply "Oh ... He's just some Dude"
Just when I thought I couldn’t admire your channel more… you make a video about one of my favorite teenage movies! Living in the South Bay, I loved this movie. Thank you and keep up the great work. THESE ARE TALLS MAN!
Taylor Negron was also a store clerk at the Stop n Go in River's Edge! Just fun little trivia. Looks like the Stop n Go was in San Diego. Loved your video!
Ironically he was also a pizza man three times as well. Once in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Vamps, and again in Biodome. He was also a mailman twice in Better Off Dead and How I Got Into College
Just watched it, the Rivers Edge. It still holds up, but barely. Its def a Gen X, pre-grunge film. I always thought the placement of Negron in the film was strange, I always wanted John to whoop him.
Although Dazed and confused is a bonafied classic and responsible for the 70s nostalgia resurgence of the 90s I think it’s nothing like the Stoned Age (regarding the coattails comment). Besides being set in the 70s and the weed theme that’s where the similarities end. They had totally different vibes and social dynamics. The Stoned Age had more of a 80s headbanger vibe versus the hard rock high schoolers of Dazed. In dazed the cool stoners were mainly the popular jocks but they all hung out and were cool with other social groups. In Stoned the jocks and rich kids set themselves apart from the “loser stoners”(ie party scene). I liken the Stoned Age more to the “headbanger Stoney buddies” trend of the 90s (ala Bill and Ted, Beaviis and Butthead, Wayne and Garth) but more funnier, realer and relatable if you grew up around that scene like I did. But you can’t still beat the ORIGINAL Stoney buds : Chainsaw and Dave from Summer School😎🤓. The Stoned Age taught me two valuable life lessons…1. don’t be no worm and 2. Dudes from Orange County soook🤣😂😅. Party on…
Went to high school in Torrance, and grew up surfing Torrance beach. I remember all my friends in high school constantly quoting this movie. One kid came to school with a "no fat chicks" sweatshirt and got suspended. Remember someone being tac for halloween . We loved this movie growing up in Torrance.
The director/writer grew up in Santa Barbara, where his experiences inspired this film, so although it takes place in Torrance, it’s more about life in SB.
Great job man this is my favorite movie! Thanks for your hard work. A note: at 11:52 you say the reason Joe doesn’t hook up with Lanie is because he doesn’t want to be an old man drinking Ox 45 alone. That scene is a reference to the end of 2001 A Space Odyssey when Dave is in the room alone and spills the wine and ages rapidly etc. Remember Joe describes when the laser hits him at the BOC show how it “got all 2001-like”. This movie may be one of the best written films ever. Tons and tons of callbacks, references, setups and payoffs.
Oh man this movie haha ! like you said I first saw this movie back in the 90s on the USA channel and till this day still one of favorites, a lot of people don't know about this movie so if you see this you have to watch it ! great work as always. " Who the hell is tack ? just some dude"
I played baseball at Culver City Babe Ruth in the early 90’s. When I first saw this movie in the mid 90’s, I automatically recognized the baseball field 🤙🏽 Love this movie. Thanks man
Hadn’t seen this movie since the late 90’s when I was 16/17. Could relate to it a lot as had some stoner friends. Downloaded it and watched it tonight. The memories!
I also discovered the Stoned Age as late movie in basic cable channel back in the early 2000’s and since then is one of favorites. Great hunting locations video!
6:25 I had found a place at 19901 Cantara St. in Winnetka, that looks just like Jill's dad's house and every time I've seen it on Google Maps it has more gates in front of the house.
great great episode Kurt 😃 i have always hoped that someone would cover the locations for The Stoned Age. you did such a great job, i’m sure it wasn’t easy finding some of those locations. very nice job my friend 👍
Extra bonus props for the T&C Surf shirt...I always found it funny the movie was set in the 70's, yet the film is full of cars from the 90's lol...the opening scene has a 1990 Acura Integra drive by, as well as a 1990's Honda Accord.
When I was gigging after a show we would get back to our rehearsal spot and unload our gear, Afterwards we will Crack a beer and then put on "the stoned age" great memories !
Back in 2017 I was working in Costa Mesa, CA and on my down time took a drive up the 405 and checked out Torrance to see if I could find any of the places this film was made... Now knowing it was not made there makes sense. Later that day drove up to Century City to check out the Fox Plaza building (AKA "Nakatomi Plaza" from the original Die Hard movie). I parked in the garage in the same place where Argyle was talking to the big stuffed teddy bear in his limo then ventured up the escalator getting a few pics of the building before the security guard could spot me. I saw him turn away another person who was checking out the building... apparently I am not the only one... Die Hard was about as 80's as you could get... The Stoned Age, Die Hard and Airheads (another 1994 film - the radio station set was built inside the Fox Plaza parking garage). were three flicks where I wore out the VHS tapes during my childhood.
I loved this movie..when i was 15 I discovered this just cause of the name i watched it on cinamax back in 95..loved it and still do..i found it on TUBI tv and im still high watching it in the middle of the night like i was almost 30 years later lmao
In your opening from Culver City Park, the apartment building touching your right shoulder is the building right next to where I lived for 20 years. I kept yelling at the screen, "Move to your left! Move to your left!" Oh well, the knowledge that my apartment building was directly behind your right shoulder will have to do. By the way, The Stoned Age can be seen on Tubi, from what I understand.
Cool movie thanks for doing this video which I requested in multiple live streams of yours Hopefully it gets a Blu-ray release Maybe ShoutFactory will get the License
I don't think there was a specific year this movie was said to be set in - just "the 70's" however some of the BOC songs like "burnin' for you" did not come out until 1981. Really the '70's culture extended into the 80's or even the early 90's - I graduated HS in 1992 and the teenage life I remember was much the same as depicted in this film. The turn of the century is when the culture started to radically change into this dystopia where kids are taught to fear everything and conform at all costs.
I find it amazing how Tak of all people went on to be a legitimate success as an actor. I seriously can't recall any of his work I've seen that he hasn't entertained. 👍💯 Also...am I the only one assuming "Submarine" was a "game" regarding going down on them?🤔😒 And in the end they actually got rid of the cuter of the bunch to fix the ratio! Smart move ladies 👌🙄
I was hoping you would do this movie! I always liked this better than Dazed and confused. Sad to see so much has changed. Like the building's & signage. Everything new looks the same & bland. Love the ch !
It'd be great if you did a behind the scenes video of how you put these filming locations videos together. How you get your info, how you found the locations, etc. You do a great job here and I think a behind the scenes video would be just as interesting as the filming locations videos themselves.
Omg this was my shit besides Dazed still quote hella lines to this day and put my 2 sons on to this and they loved it and they showed their friends and so on cuz it's casual. 😂 "Put a little insanity on your potato...shake it mannn!"
Always difficult to be sure you've got the right place. Sometimes places just look different on film, you can go to the same location not long after filming and it just doesn't look the same, I can't explain it, I guess the camera has some effect, must be angles or definition or something.
My friend Andy worked on that picture back in 93. I visited the set twice. Once during the El Paso BBQ scene. I remember Clifton was very cool but he hated the itch that wig and watch cap gave him. Great vid bro! Not sure if anyone answered this question yet, but the beach scene with Joe and Lanie was shot at Topanga State Beach in Malibu.
Thank you very much. Someone that worked on the movie answered it. They said it was at the park where the oil rigs are. They just dressed it.
Living in Torrance I used to watch this movie a lot and Jackie Brown really appreciate the video
