One of the first movies I worked on as an extra, Mason Hall courtyard with the guys playing football. Confirmed the statue was brought in. Thanks for this video, great memories
I couldn’t believe it when I discovered that he played Uncle Rico. Also I was watching a Random episode of X-Files and he came out same character as real genius.
This movie was one of the finest examples of cinematic storytelling. It had a start, middle and ending in perfect balance. Casting and music selection all fit spot on. Every scene adds, without over-cooking. Characters had just the right amount of back-story to make them credible. The definition of a classic.
YES!!! I have been hoping you'd do "Real Genius." Even though I moved to the Chicago suburbs in 1985 and attended school with guys who were extras in John Hughes movies and I loved those and they were part of my fiber and I have been to every one of the filming locations for those films, it was a non-John Hughes movie that always captured my imagination. "Real Genius" is by far my favorite 80s film of all time and I've always wanted to see the filming locations. GREAT job as always! I love that so much is unchanged, and really enjoyed your memories of hanging at the college where you met your wife. Thanks for another great vlog.
This film was a touchstone of my youth. Best line was when Chris and Mitch "borrowed" Kent's Citroën and conned their way into the Air Force base: "Look, we're late, we're tired, we rented this 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙥𝙞𝙙 car...." Note at the very end of the movie Prof. Hathaway pulls up to his "popped" house in a Peugeot. The film makers must have had something with French cars.
This was awesome! Thank you! I work right by General Atomics and that's a fun fact about Stacey Peralta. I do have to say, at times you sound like Norm McDonald, which is awesome.
Another fun fact about Real Genius: Among the students in Mitch's class is Yuji Okumoto, the actor who plays Chozen in Cobra Kai series and KK Part 2. He's clearly visible in about three scenes.
I haven't seen this for a while! Definitely one of my fave of Kilmer also. He had such charisma! I'll have to watch it again soon, thanks for reminding us of this 80's 💎 very cool Kurt!
A classic! There is something very nostalgic about Dr. Hathaway’s yet developed neighborhood back in the 80s. I always wondered where it was at. Another awesome filming location video Kurt!
This movie was indeed awesome! Lazlo the mysterious genius who lived in Chris’s closet in his dorm bedroom, was cool. Also I think everyone has their own memory of certain things in movies. For me at the end of this movie, I liked the popcorn scene too because I Always remember Val Kilmer catching a piece of popcorn that was flowing into the air with his mouth. Agh! When movies had those feel good vibes.
Great stuff for people our age. This was probably my favorite of the classic 80s teen/college comedies. Seeing that so many of the locations have stayed essentially unchanged for 37 years is great.
Totally awesome video, thank you!! Real Genius is up there in my top 10 '80's movies. I had the wonderful chance of meeting Jon Gries a few months ago, and of course I had to mention my love for Lazlo!
Outstanding work my friend!!! Great 80’s movie, underrated in my opinion. Question for you Kurt, what’s your dream movie location that you would like to cover?
# 80s Life you did it again with this great movie of the 80s. 1985 was the best year for movies very Underappreciated movie Real Genius one of my favorite 80s movies top 10 for sure. Fun fact:Jordan also played Judy in Revenge of the Nerds. Do D.A.R.Y.L. Filming locations also great 85 movie.
I used to live in San Diego and worked for General Atomics. The opening scenes where he interviewing for a job was filmed in the GA lobby and building 7 as you pointed out. There were also some scenes filmed in the GA data center but got cut from the film. Good stuff and great movie Kurt.
@@80sLife You would be able to get into the lobby, (you can see it in the film) but you can only get a visitor badge based on justified business with a employee escort. Security obviously supplies the visitor badges and vets the justification. (Campus access) Lobby, "yes", campus "no".
Was the first street shown at Occidental the same that the rig first pulls up at Lincoln Hawk's son ceremony in Over The Top? Great job as always, Kind Sir!
That's was brilliant Kurt, really enjoyed this, I've only seen this film just once so may have to give it another watch again. Fantastic, looking forward to your next one 😊
Not airbags on the Citroën. All of them had hydraulic suspensions that could raise and lower the suspension. In fact you didn't even have to use a jack to change a tire and you could set the suspension and drive on only three wheels if you got a flat. Bentley and Cadillac have both licensed the Citroën hydraulic suspension system.
Nice work!!!! One of my all time favorite movies as well and you can tell you went to a lot of work to get those shots. Appreciate it and I look forward to visiting them myself. I suspect the dorm room and hallways were sets, but it would have been cool to see those as well. Thanks
I had no idea Peralta was the pilot. That IS random but really cool. Grew up during the 80s skate craze and enjoyed the hell out of its influence (never was much of a skater but the art, tricks and games were really awesome).
Thank you! Just a few other spots on the college campus. Like when Mitch is at the freshman welcome party. Nothing too huge. And the military base from the end.
One of my top 5 that you’ve done so far man. Love Real Genius. Awesome that Barney’s Beanery looks virtually the same. Would love to go there and have a burger and brew. Keep up the great work Kurt!
Couple of tidbits I've picked up along the way. Everyone realizes Jon Gries played Lazlo in Real Genius and Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite but Grandma Dynamite played by Sandy Martin was also in Real Genius as well. She played the rambling professor's wife towards the start of the film. OH! Same scene, when mitch is done talking to the professor and goes to walk away, he bumps into a guy who turns and smiles at Mitch. THAT IS TOM HANKS!!!! He has an uncredited roll as an extra in the movie as well.
Shit dude. That was one of my favorite movies when i was 9-10 years old. I had it on vhs. I don’t even know how many times i watched it. That was a great surprise. Thank you.
Hello. I watched a video of filming locations from another source that led me to yours. Being that I grew up in the 80s and 90s, I know about and have watched most of these movies as a kid. You do an excellent job with what you can cover. I was looking for a video from you about a movie I watched over and over again as a kid, called "Over the Top". I didn't see anything; did/will you cover that movie?
I instantly liked this movie because Val Kilmer was cute in the movie and the soundtrack especially Tears for Fears and another group I never heard of ever until after I saw this movie a few times then bought it later back in the 90s when I was aware of the movie😀😀😀😀
Hu Mr. 80's life....thanks for doing your video's and your efforts. I messaged you mnths ago about Dan Fernando valley and Chatsworth. I've never been to l.a before. I thought Chatsworth was IN San Fernando Valley.......until I looked it up on the map. Thanks for your efforts and good wishes to you and your family if someone were to become a member, how do we do it?
Ive noticed that college campuses tend to look the same after many years, for the most part. It's the filming locations that are in and around a city that seem to change a lot. Especially the buildings.
Deborah Foreman was the brief cameo, star of Valley Girl, which is what I was replying to. Michelle Meyrink was featured in Valley Girl also, and was in The Outsiders as well.
How cool that you met your wife at Occidental College…I do have a question…since you mentioned that you didn’t attend college there, but they allow you to join the clubs? You don’t have to be a student there? Thank you 😊
So that was kinda a joke. My wife and I did meet there, but it was a friend that introduced us. I had never been there before that night. Once we started dating I was on campus alot.. and one day all the clubs were set up outside, trying to get people to join. So I started signing up for a bunch of random clubs, just to make my wife laugh. Out of all the clubs I signed up for, only one responded. It was an Anti drug club called "Dudes that don't use" it was a social club, so it didn't matter that I wasn't a student.
After I saw this movie I wanted to be a physicist or at least do something involving science. ...and then I realized I had the IQ of jello and that ended that. One of my favorite 80s movies.
I had a friend who asked me to drive him and his other friend to the auditions for this movie. He didn't make it past the first door before he was rejected for not looking the part.
I watched this many times before I realised that the cars in the desert that were the original target of the laser were actually a recreation of the Kennedy assassination motorcade. Go back to the movie and check it out.
Holy cow, they really cut down on how many trees and bushes they had at OC, went from being beautiful in the film to a trashy concrete village these days. PC meanwhile improved their greenery game. Really makes me wonder what caused each to happen.
One of the first movies I worked on as an extra, Mason Hall courtyard with the guys playing football. Confirmed the statue was brought in. Thanks for this video, great memories
And don't forget that Lazlo Hollyfield is Uncle Rico in Napolean Dynamite!!!!! Thank you for all your videos!
Yeah, still blows my mind. He's actually in so much stuff. Thank you!!
I couldn’t believe it when I discovered that he played Uncle Rico. Also I was watching a Random episode of X-Files and he came out same character as real genius.
Grandma Carlinda Dynamite (Sandy Martin) also had a small roll at the start of Real Genius!
Great movie! Great soundtrack!
Agreed on both
The best Val Kilmer movie and def one of my favorites. Thanks for doing this!!!

Great work. I am always amazed how frequently Occidental is used in T.V. and Movies (My father and sister both attended). I too loved that movie.
Amazing. You do a lot of great work. Loved this film when I saw it regularly in the 80’s.
Totally awesome! This brings back the memories. I have always loved this movie. Great job

Outstanding work my friend!!! Great 80’s movie, underrated in my opinion. Question for you Kurt, what’s your dream movie location that you would like to cover?
So sad about kilmer but the 80’s movies had great scripts, genuine reactions and badass soundtracks and fashion
He was in the new top gun so he's making a comeback
Thanks for doing this man! I saw this movie on TV when I was like 5 and have loved it every since. That was 34 years ago now
Nice area, this video has to be the record for most intact/untouched locations.

Hydropneumatic suspension.
And in a weird coincidence, one of the most well-reputed Citroen experts in the US is named Jerry Hathaway.
Great job
