- Ron, my father-in-law, sent me a couple cans of these Matiz Wild Sardines in olive oil. Thanks Ron! I had a can of these small sardines with piquillo peppers on the shelf for a while, so I figured it was time for a brand survey of Matiz!
Is a can of sardines the manliest gift that's safe to send in the mail? Yes, besides maybe a nailgun, it probably is. Развлечения
I never thought there were others out there with a thing for canned sardines, let alone a guy from the '70s who reviewed them can by can. Heaven. I feel seen, man.
Welcome, brother!
17+ years as a professional chef. Never desired a sardine in my life... But I CAN'T stop watching this guy!!! Approachable. Humble. Dry wit. Entertaining in the WEIRDEST way. Keep it up, brother. Don't change a thing! I'm "hooked"! 😉
Try bar harbor smoked kippers. They're not cheap, expect to pay up to $7 American for a can. Best smoked fish can I've ever had, a true canned delicacy. A chef such as your self would appreciate them.
I love how you talk about how the light reflects off those sardines the same way a jeweler would talk about a diamond. 😂.
Do not ever stop making these videos
"What are we even doing here" - everyone, everyday at work.
So true!
I know you try to keep it family friendly but it cracks me up when ya just let it roll of the tongue 😂
Found matiz sardines at my grocery store. Before buying I visited your channel for a review.
I hope you're a millionaire by now. This is Gold.
Gosh, not yet, thanks for watching friend!
I watched basically all of the fish files videos over the last month and finally decided to buy tins. I'm actually rewatching videos of the tins I find and buy before or after tasting! Thank you so much for the videos.
I just ordered these! I love when I eat some dines that you've reviewed, cause I can kind of gauge my experience along with yours and look for things I might not otherwise notice.
The way you described the sardine was truly inspiring, to find how all the intricate ways which subtly tell you the sardine is good
When you opened up that can the scales was so beautiful they blinded me. That was the most attractive sardines I have ever seen. an you handle them so genteel. I never would have known chopsticks were great for eating sardines.
Love the Bob Ross sounds!
First meal of the day! Impressive. Great Review as always done with your personal style. Very Enjoyable.
Thanks again, Ron!
“Another fun day at the office” bob ross music kicks in 😌such a good video my dude. The small ones looked very delicious w/ those peppers I’m not ganna lie
woah.... funny you brought up your fear of the tab ripping off the can. That's exactly what happened to me just now while opening a can of Matiz Small Sardines with sweet piquillo peppers.
I've really been into the little ones with the peppers. I find them to be excellent. And firm.
I’ve been over-sardined out & have not wanted any for a few weeks now but I’ve kept my can of Matiz (w/ lemon) out on the counter to remind me that i need to eat some soon (for their health benefits). Finally i watched a new video of yours the other day & it got me craving them again so I opened my can of lemon Matiz (Ive never had this brand before & I don’t remember how much they were). OMG these are sooooooo delicious! I love to open the sardine & eat the spine 1st then put it on a ritz cracker w/ a little cream cheese spread on it. That was the way i was 1st introduced to sardines back in high school from my Dutch friend & thats how i always want to eat them, it brings back good memories. I also found some frozen sardines at a fancy market here in Austin & I’m looking forward to cooking them on the grill.
Glad to hear your sardine origin story!
Dude you really crack me up lol “Looking down the barrel here” I’m dead 😂 keep it up man I subscribed and liked your videos!
Another entertaining review to light up my day
Another fun day at the office for me. Top quality commentary. I thought sardines were boring you bring out the sardine awesomeness in life. Thank you!!
Cant believe you dont have way more views and subscribers. You’re content is GREAT
I've been eating dines since I was a little kid and they just get better! Thank you Matthew!~
Love the over the shoulder box flip.🆒
Awesome review as always! In my opinion, Matiz sardines in olive oil and lemon are much better than the plain oil. Look for them in the yellow packaging. 🤓
Thumbs up, fantastic review. I really want to try these out now. If you're saying they are on par with the Wild Planet, I really like those so I think this will be a buy and try for me.
Dude, you've got to try the Trader Joes smoked 'dines in the purple can. Tasty and good price too.
Yeah, making a plan to visit a Trader Joes. Definitely a blind spot for me.
1am and I stumble on this gem of a channel.
The Matiz mussels are maybe my favorite snack.
The Dahmer of sardines LOL
“The Review of the Week”…for sardines! 🤣
Man you know the vibe, keep it up 👌🏻
Matiz w/piquillo peppers are very sweet peppers, too sweet for me with sardines. On the other hand, Maiiz w/Padron peppers are a little spicey with a lingering heat they are fantastic! A truly great Spanish sardine is Zoe brand probably the very best olive oil in any sardine. Amazon has both.
You should try the lemon flavored matiz sardines. Those are really good
Yes, the lid is difficult to deal with, i use pliers.
I loved how you chowed down the spine 😆
THESE SARDINES DON'T SMELL !
Some sardines stink up the whole house, but you can actually eat these in public 👍
The lemon one is infused with flavor, truly delicious 😋
Thanks For Your Review & Your Time !
I love the Spinal Tap reference
I love the music!
When I am able to get a brand I always come back and watch your video again. I got some of these and finally got some Nuri. I really liked the Nuri in spicy tomato sauce. I will be trying these soon.
My favorite are the NURI spicy sardines in tomato sauce
A sardine vault,uh, Matt.A little lipstick never hurts,except on a fish.I like a man with spine.You know, a firm tail and spine action.🤔😘
This is gonna be my first sardine, I like your videos.
love sardines love this video
Don't know about you. I'll bet I'm quite a bit older than you. But I really miss the older cans for canned sardines . They didn't have a pull tab. They all came with a funny looking little key, usually attached to the side of the can. The key was about an inch and a half long and made of metal. There was an oblong opening at one end of the key and then a tab on top of the can that fit perfectly into the hole on the end of the key. Then you just slipped the tab into the key and began rolling towards the other side of the lid. There was no razor sharp lid to dispose of. The top just rolled up into a tight little roll at the end of the can. Much easier and practical. Guess pull tabs were just a cheaper option for the manufacturer.
You can still get those types of openings you describe. Usually associated with canned meats such as corned beef, spam etc.
David, I'm old enough to remember when these were on sardine cans. My Dad shared them with me when I was pretty small. They probably went away by the time I was a teenager in the 90s. Now they put those pull tabs on all canned goods, not every day I have to get out the can opener. Thanks for the memories.
Had my first can of Matiz yesterday. I dig them! Great with a spritz of lemon juice.
Yeah, that lemon sounds perfect for them!
Please keep doing what you are doing! I am following along with similar sardines I can find here in San Francisco! :)
Where in sf?!😊
@@melissacruzhernandez5178 Molinari's in SF has a great selection of Spanish sardines :)
A1 commentary, "pig in shit," I love it! 😅❤
Have some Matiz and KO coming tomorrow. Plan to try them with spicy chili crisp.
Matiz is the only brand i buy even though iv had others that are good. The cockles and muscles and octopus and the rest of the line-up by matiz is good also.
I would like to eat a can of Sardines every morning, but sometimes I also like Oysters and Mussels, and Salmon, so sometimes the Sardines might have to wait for lunch.
Will have to keep an eye out for these small ones, I may have passed them up thinking they were all the same Matiz
Excellent, expert chopstick skills.
Hope you’re well mate
I finally tried sardines for the first time. I pretended it was one of your reviews. Actually really good! Thanks for opening my eyes to these little fishes!
I did the same thing. My coworker had brought some in and I had to try them.
It gets better, try some other fish too. I tried some calamari in ink the other day and that was fantastic!
6:15 did you call the sardine a fucker? 🤣🤣🤣
4:48 I tried to open a can along side you and did exactly what you described 😢
I really like the Matiz wild spicy sardines -- very tasty. Sodium is not too bad at 330mg per tin.
Just tried canned sardines for the first time, decided to go big and start with these meaty mofos. A bit much for me straight, but some cocktail sauce straightened them right out.
Since King Oscars seem smaller and flakier I'm gonna taste test them next and probably try to make some fish fritters out of them. Still not sure how I got here but thanks for inspiring me to try something new!
Enjoy sardines with a warm draw of piss.
The acridness of the pee goes great with sardines.
These video been in my recommendations oh well
I’d love to see you review Matiz canned octopus! I’ve been itching to try them but haven’t been willing to lay down $10 for one can just yet. Love the channel
Omg I’m so torn on octopus. On one hand, I love it. On the other hand, I feel bad eating something that smart 😞
Omg I’m so torn on octopus. On one hand, I love it. On the other hand, I feel bad eating something that smart 😞
Have you tried the Matiz Cockles in brine?
Absolutely fantastic. Almost as good as this channel.
Not yet!
nice - i have seen most of your sardine reviews of various brands - if you were to pick - what are your top 3 ?
I have now tried three cans of these and I really do like them. I really liked the one with the sweet piquillo peppers. Yum maybe the best I have tried so far.
I only had one can of Wild Planet before and they were mushy so on that experience I liked these better.
The sweet piquillo Matiz are the favorite of one of my irl friends. Honestly, I can't remember now what they were like. I think the peppers were good. If I see em again I'll try them. The little sardinillas are my favorite.
I tried something else new today I wanted to tell you about. Caviart BlackSeaweed Pearls and I absolutely loved them. I ate the entire jar up in two meals. I only eat fish that has fins and scales so I would not eat caviar from a sturgeon since it has no scales.
But I thought I would tell you about it .... they are a little salty, but I like salt. It also has some cayenne pepper in it and that makes them just spicy enough. Now that I know I like it I am hoping I can find some more of it.
@@27clearblue Interesting! I think I have eaten the seaweed in its natural form, but the website makes it seem so enticing.
@@CannedFishFiles I found some more at another Walmart today. They are just so good. I ate them again for dinner along with a tin of Oscar sardines. If you happen to see them at Walmart maybe you would want to try them. They are located in the same section as the sardines. (Top shelf likely).
I have to really give thanks to you for being able to convince me that sardines are good. Without watching your videos I don't think I would have ever been able to work up the courage to have tried them.
I thought I was the only person that loved the bones..I guess not🤓
Look at that spine 😂I don’t like sardines but your videos are cool bro
Have u ever tried opening the can and putting it on on a pan with a little water in the pan to heat up?
No, but I will soon!
Probably my favorite brand so far. I like them in olive oil most. The piripiri pepper sauce is okay, but I feel like I lose too much the fish's identity. Just curious do you make all the music for your channel? I see a lot of instruments and music equipment in these vids.
I make most of the music, thanks for watching the videos.
These regular Matiz are great and one of the ones I keep coming back to. But sometimes they are better than other times--not sure if it is me or the them. They have a great briny aftertaste I think too. I think they became more distinctive the more you eat them and then eat other ones.
Yeah, Matiz deserves another shot. They have some other products I'm interested in. I don't really run into them at the store very often, though.
@@CannedFishFiles I get them from Amazon, packs of 12. The spicy ones are good too
I just ate and enjoyed a can of Matiz lightly smoked deenz. They were fantastic! On another note I have been searching for weeks now the interwebs and culinary underworld for those skinny metal chopsticks with the pointy tips that you feature in your late videos. I finally found some on A man zone. Snow Peak Japanese style fine chopsticks. Having said that the Matiz smoked deenz were 3 big pilchards with a few scales, nice and firm, and with a perfect amount of smoke packed in Spanish olive oil. I ate them with those tiny little pointy chopsticks and Lord have mercy! What an eye opener. I have used chopsticks for years albeit a bit clumsy. These dudes make me feel like I can perform brain surgery. They rock. So much so that I ordered another pair. But they ain't for cheapness but worth every penny. In summation..the Matiz are quality deenz for less shekels than Bela's or Nuri's and I would rate them right up there with them although I reckon the Nuri's are still the apex predator of canned sardines and why? Because the Extra Spicy Nuri's to me are like sex in a can! What are we even doing here? Commenting about eating canned sardines with chopsticks. What an amazing world we live in. Mahalo!
Yes, if you absolutely, positively, must have your chopsticks outlive you, Snow Peaks are it!! The lightest, stiffest, and most precise!
Will you ever try Pinhais?
lol, @RickyTinez of sardines, i love it
So far of all the videos of yours I've seen which is maybe about 25, your favourite so far seemed to be those boutique ones by the 2 women. Are they the best you've eaten so far? If not, could you link your favs?
Hey fizz! You know, Fishwife was great, but it's not my favorite of my videos. It's a fantastic smoked tuna, but more than anything, it was just such a pleasant surprise to find a well-hyped product actually be very good! And it was also my first experience with smoked tuna as well. My favorite has probably been the small Ramon Penas ("Luxury Sardines"). This was my first mindblowing experience with a relatively expensive can. It's my first interaction with Ramons, caught on tape, and my genuine joy is hard to replicate. I think that can was my gateway to the wider world of conservas, beyond the cans that I found at my local grocery store. Thanks for your question.
sometimes i wonder how much the shipping environment as well as how they are stored in the grocery store contributes to the firmness or lack thereof
Yeah, I know for a fact you don't want this stuff to sit in a hot place for too long.
Are there guts in the little sardines, or did they remove them?
They must have some way of yanking out the guts when they slice them up. I saw a video about it, but it just looks like the whole fish go into a big steel box and then come out headless and cleaned on the other end.
In this video I really think they missed a liver or something. I called it "dark meat" but it had to be some kind of organ. I don't think I wanted to say it at the time.
OMG OOOOLLLDD! Thanks tho!
Got a $10 tin from Safeway but it had lemon essence which totally ruined the taste of the sardines. Next time I'll just get the sardines in olive oil alone
My Safeway had them for $12.95… in California. How are they so expensive now smh
@@bmxrider925 ignore safeway. Go to an ethnic store or a Sars or H mart if you have them. I get my sardines for cheap. Ones with a good Slavic section are good. I get fat jars of sprats for like four bucks. Cheap cheap cheap. Ignore safeway. Terrible place to shop.
@@bmxrider925 Oh, I'm in wa. Hello California.
I guess you know why they are dark on top and lite on the bottom side, but in case you don't know, disguise from predators 🦅🦈
Just like American navy planes in WWII.
What are the best non smoked brands ? I really don’t like the smoke flavor but I like olive oil, skin, and bones 🦴 thank you!!
Hey Kayla, I'm not too sensitive to smokiness, so I may not be too much help. There are a lot of varieties that are "lightly smoked". I just went through my cupboard and I'll be damned if they don't all mention smoke somewhere on the wrapper. If it says "Smoked" before the name of the fish, you know you're in for it. If it just mentions it somewhere, a lot of times the taste won't be too obvious. I guess it depends on your tolerance. Hope that helps.
@@CannedFishFiles thanks for the reply! Your channel is awesome!
M’y local Asian market had a secret economy sardines $2 cans bur on examination they are a product of Portugual but imported by an Asian American importer had a chilli in the cans and all im like now that’s weird looks like a high end product that was repacked for the import market all the fish where full of roe
Please tell order kaha sehoga
music is selfmade!? i saw a moog and some modulars
I make all the music. Honestly, most of what I use the hardware for is making the music for the channel, and I don't have time for making much "real music". Every month or so I spend an afternoon spitting out a few new tracks so the channel doesn't get too stale. So even that stuff doesn't really get the polish I'd like.
i use vcv rack now and korg, roland, doepfer etc.
did u ever tried „kieler sprotten“ ?
Have you ever found a worm in the can? I had a wild planet and found what looked like a worm. Just wondering matthew?
Eww, I don't think so! I hope not! I'm pretty clueless about the potential for parasites in sardines. I'm sure it all gets cooked to death, but still pretty gross.
@@CannedFishFiles just asking! Thanks!
What is your favorite can of sardines?
I think Ramon Pena "small sardines" are my favorite.
is the bob ross channel music free domain?
the only ones ive disliked are the "king oscar zesty tomato" the tomato sauce was a weird mix and i alr know people will disagree
Perhaps surpassed only by stepping in dog excrement having a sardine can tab break off is just about the worst non catastrophic thing that can happen to a fella in a day.
Geesh where does this guy live lol
What about the dollar general special ones that are like 80 cents 😂
Gonna hold off on the $.80 manager's special until my platinum tier Patreon members starting yelling for it!
what are we even doing here? IDK EATING SARDINES AS PER USUAL MAYBE?!?!?!
just sayin u should work on your tagline that youve used for the entirety of your youtube career.
WHAT ARE WE EVEN DOING HERE?
WTF is it with the spine? LOL!
idk, just something to talk about! Not sure how it came to this. In real life I don't actually revel in munching on the spines.
Your videos are of too high a quality not to bring you success on RUclips. Love your channel! Curious how your personality, attention to production, and uniqueness would work with a channel that would be more likely to have mass appeal..
Just please don’t stop the sardine vids no matter. (:
You got it.
King Oscar Royal Selection sardines are better. Very good.
Thanks Steve, I'm going to do a roundup of the best King Oscars I can find.
what are we even doing here
Hey, enough of your yakkin!
Why not a fork instead of chops or a spoon .
I still can't get the hang of it.
Where the hell is your B camera?
Definitely just out of frame on the left. Probably a 50mm lens. Later on I got a c-stand with a long sturdy boom so I can hang it about 30 degrees off the top of the food.
@@CannedFishFiles lol thanks, was driving me crazy haha
SPINE ACTION!!!
language! :-) Keep it classy. ;-)
Sorry! This is before I was really trying to watch it.
@@CannedFishFiles It's cool.
@@samuelbrainsample Nah, lemme tell you, I got a piece of fan mail from a 7-year-old boy, and it was the greatest thing that's happened to me since I started this channel, so I really gotta keep it together. Which is tough, because in normal life I basically talk like Miles Davis and Quentin Tarantino combined.
