Absolutely transfixed, transcending this plane. The instruments, played by the finest, struggle to come close to what flows naturally from Muireann. Words cannot convey valid comment for the beauty and purity expressed. I am grateful. Not a word do I understand, but it does not matter, the emotion and depth from which she sings speaks much deeper, exceeding the capacity of words. Thank you.

Last night I was very weak and exhausted
There was a vision coming in the presence of the beautiful fair-haired woman.
Her head hair was buckled yellow, sloping down to the ground with it.
It was with the sound of her mouth that she struck the magic of her Banban music.
That is the Clan Gael of the Aran Islands, that is the statement of the prophecy.
The only son of a fighting prince will come to be called Bonaparte.
The Emperor and the Spaniard, who sent a guard to Scotland.
I would never have been happy to have the residence of the King of Saxony.
Without exact thanks to the edge of their swords, I would have sold the father to them
To the Gaelic Clan of the Aran Islands, that is the statement of prophecy.
The green pill is not the best place for him to travel
Because the best man in them is nothing but an English black sparrow.
I throw them in the middle of them, and not a dampness for the Orangemen.
That black debts in the young would satisfy their frameworks.
To the Gaelic Clan of the Aran Islands, that is the statement of prophecy.
Leaving the field, take off all your hats
It is a prayer to Mother Mary on the day of going to Galloway.
Priests, bishops and brethren, the Pope will be the head of the Church
Praying to God every day with a desire to make the English wander
To the Gaelic Clan of the Aran Islands, that is the statement of prophecy.

Like in traditional Indian music, the drone ties everything together. Each note stacked on top harmonises with it or brings some tension to be melted away later. Absolutely gorgeous. In Hindu belief it´s a reminder how we are all one as Atman. I don´t think there is such an idea behind it in Celtic music, but the effect is very similar. Celtic is more harmonious and studied, where Indian is more spontaneous, but with great artists the deepest ritual can be performed with vivid spontaneity.

How interesting to read. Thank you so much for sharing that. I have no music training, but my mother was a Classically trained Coloratura Soprano and Pianist. Anything I know is by eavesdropping or from mimicking, but I recall Mom saying good Sopranos hit the highest notes softly and have no vibrato. Some may laugh at what I say, but it seems she is not singing with a vibrato, but ìs hitting actually separate notes sung ever so softly around (or connected with) a main notes. That has to be incredibly difficult or incredibly wrong....I don't know.

Hindu culture and Celtic culture are very closely related.
Their languages share the same root etymology, and they both share the Goddess Danu, even having the same words in both languages for certain things.
Both Hindu and Celtic beliefs and practices touch the heart of anyone who hears their songs.

Gan buachan cruinn le faobhar a gclaíomh
Go mbainfidh díol a n-athar dóibh
Is a chlanna Gael na n-árann,

    Sin é ráiteachas na tairngreacht
Le linn dul as an bpáirc daoibh,
Bainí go leir bhur hataí dhaoibh
    Is guí chun Muire Máthair
An lá do dhul ar Ghall-phoic
    Beidh sagairt, easpaig, bráithe
Is an Pápa ceann na heaglaise
Ag guí chun Dé gach lá le fonn

Well done Padraig in giving the translation . what a beautiful air.
The sentiments expressed in the song are just. The English came here and they have no receipts for the places they are in, the planters, and the old Gaels deported and worse. How ever they could think that the likes of the United Irishmen were disloyal when they acted for the oppressed native Irish.
Henry Joy, William Orr, Woke Tone and later Robert Emmet all knew right from wrong and all perished at the hands of the stranger.
Charles Kickham, who wrote Knocknagow and introduced us to 'Matt the Thresher' , he was right when he said at his trial ' It is English Justice that's on its trial'.

Keep trying Dougie! (I don't mean marry her I mean speaking! FCS!) I was using Duolingo to learn Scottish Gaelic but took the last year off, but now I challenge you to this: We will each pick a greeting to use on friends and family and maybe please and thankyou's too, AND we will stick some labels on stuff and say the names when we see those things...just for fun and maybe we will click the language switch in our brains. Maybe there is an online FB group where we can speak and learn with a community and maybe we should find a Gael that we can chat with online...just be careful how you say that to your wife if you're married.

Sár-mhaith ó thaobh ceoil de agus an-suimiúil i leith an dóigh a leiríonn sé dearcadh na nGael ar Napoléon thart ar an bhliain 1808 agus an dóchas go mbeadh sé i ndán saoirse a thabhairt don phobal agus na máistrí a chaitheamh amach. In é seo tá sé ar aon dul leis an amhrán Sliabh na mBan ( is oth liom féinig etc.)

Are these instruments inspired by traditional Hindu instruments of music?

    • @CelticSongs

The harmonium was conceived in the West, but today largely resides in the East, particularly in the Indian subcontinent; so much so that many mistakenly think it to be an Indian instrument. During the British occupation of India several European harmoniums made their way to India where they became the cynosure of the eyes of Indian musicians. One such musician was Dwarkanath Ghose, whose company Dwarkin & Sons, was a leading manufacturer of musical instruments in Kolkata (then Calcutta). In 1875, he brought out his version of the Indian hand-harmonium, an instrument more than halved in size from the European harmonium because it was pumped by hand-operated bellows located at the back of the instrument instead of foot-operated bellows beneath the keyboard.

This is hilarious at 0.25x. I guess it should be the same for any song with lots of laryngeal vibrato. *Edit:* works well with tiny tim, I nearly shit myself.

Celts are originally of Turkish descent, history has been lying to humanity for years, because if they accept this truth then the whole world history will have to be rewritten,,this music has a different structure from all European music we know, smell, taste, melody of music, sounds are totaly different, please dont forget ! music is also an language .
did you know also the old turkish alphabet is source of latin alphabet ?? !!If you don't believe it, you can search it yourself and see the similarity. In fact, some Turkish letters continue to be used in their original form in the Latin alphabet today.
