- I look at the medical accuracy of The Good Doctor and see close to real life it is. Exploring the first episode Including the airport scene!
It’s been fun revisiting Scrubs, House MD and discovering Grey’s Anatomy, The Resident, ER and The Good Doctor!
It started with revisiting House MD- a show I loved before medical school, so I thought I'd check out the latest big medical TV show that is no doubt inspiring the next generation of doctors!
Corrections and clarifications:
- Defibrillator. I say in the video 'if the heart does stop and you are performing CPR you need to put a defibrillator on as this may help to restart the heart'; I use the term 'stop' very broadly to mean a cardiac arrest, i.e. when the heart has functionally stopped. I'm not talking about asystole which is when there is no electrical activity of the heart. In a cardiac arrest there are 4 rhythms, 2 of which can be restored by a shock from a defib (VT or VF) and 2 which cannot be (Asystole or PEA) Either way a defib / AED always needs to go on a patient in a cardiac arrest, because that's the only way you know what rhythm someone is in and whether it is shockable, and modern AEDs also manage the timings for you.
- Savant Syndrome: I incorrectly state can affect anyone, it only be applied to people with a learning difficulties or a mental disability. The point is that not all people with Savant Syndrome have autism; this is where my confusion came from!
- Send for help; the reason you should designate someone to get help is because of something called the Bystander Effect, where the more people at a scene the less likely people are to help out - as they think other people will do it.

As a 911 dispatcher, it’s pretty common for something like this to happen and when someone shouts “someone call 911”, a bunch of people will call at the same time since obviously there’s no “organization” in an event like this. So we’ll get multiple calls for the same person which sometimes causes confusion in the call center. But as I like to say, I’d rather get a hundred bystanders calling, than one who doesn’t have much information.

The thing is, it made sense that so many rare cases can be found in House, because the whole point is that no one else could figure out the patients' diagonsis, so they were transfered to House.
These type of channels are really interesting. It would be cool to see astronauts watch and comment on science fiction films.

My son has ASD and i refused to watch this because of it. Your honest review actually validates all of the reasons I personally will not watch it. People see shows like this and expect all autistic kids to be brilliant, have other people nearby that can interpret that persons brand of autism quickly and easily to others while effectively communicating with the Autistic person in under five minutes and lastly my biggest reason that i dislike shows like this is that there are not enough resources for kids with asd to get the education they need to specialize in what they obsess over. So thank you and i enjoy your videos!

As a person with ASD I can say we are complicated to the neurotypical. Heck Idk about anyone else that has this but the more answers about aspergers the more questions I have about aspergers. Like I can barely understand myself "feeling on the inside" wise. I understand what is symptoms of aspergers but I can't really grasp on how I feel on a lot of things. Mild autism is mild to the NT but on the inside of a person with ASD can feel horrible luckily some people dont feel that way too much.

Awesome job, I really enjoyed it like last time, one minor note, personally I'm not a fan of the digital pans unless you are tracking something, nothing major, and it didn't detract from the content, just felt a bit odd.

I work in the OR, never seen the surgeon watching vitals like they do in each case, that is why there is an anesthesiologist at the head of the table. Only in a code have I seen the surgeon step back & watch the vitals as the anesthesiologist stabilizes the BP, heart rate, O2 levels, etc.
Jody Crookshanks yes absolutely! During surgery the anaesthetist (as we say in UK) looks after vitals so the surgeon or surgical team can focus on the operation. I didn’t mention it in this episode as a cardiothoracic trauma case and removing glass from around the heart, you’d expect the operating team to be closely linked in with what the vitals are doing. I have asd and savant syndrome, I can remember a lot of details from pretty much anything I read/watch/listen to, and can make pretty obscure connections from one thing to another if i know enough about them.

Dr Hope's Sick Notes There are quite a few medical mistakes that I'm aware of. But I know that somewhere in season 2, Dr. Shepherd sends a lady with a metal fork for an MRI!😂 If you look it up you can probably find it. The show is on Netflix and Hulu. I think it is something you might like comsidering the fact that you are a doctor! Thank you so much!

Almost all doctors and medical practioners in general had told me that hospitals and medschools are just a really delayed orgy ._.
There's no one having sex in the hospital I'm working in, at least not on duty 😂 However, I do agree that in medic school most of the students didn't "party" as much and study a lot instead. This is true especially if you're on scholarship that constantly pressuring you to keep a good grade.

funnily enough actually female (I just say 'him' to try to avoid confusion) but my young niece liked the name Kevin before knowing it was female and the name just stuck.
Hehe you think female? I think male! The most accurate way to look through the pelvis to see if it's round, but can be difficult to know what you are looking at. So an easier way is to feel the bone above the eyebrows (supraorbital ridge); it's not a very accurate way, but gives us a good clue. Even though I think it's a male mine's called Nina, after my aunty who bought it for me!

In "The Good Doctor" the same team of surgeons do cardio thoracic surgery, Neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery and GI Surgery... That's some next level multidisciplinary residency program they are providing !! 😂😂

You can also watch a japanese medical drama called "Doctor X". The protagonist can also do those type of surgery. XD
Piano Po Nowhere on earth do we have such residency program.. you can do residency in one discipline at one time
I think Grey's is worse - there only seems to be a surgical department and an A&E(although we did once see Dermatology, but no patients) Admittedly, you don't see Grey doing neuro.

Dr Melendez is a cardiothoracic surgeon. (Because the head of the hospital said so) and yet he did, brain surgery on conjoined twins, kidney transplant, leg replacement, and many others. He’s done the roles of every surgical team there is and he is only qualified for one.

Before I became a doctor shows like this was the only way I knew about medicine and hospitals, so that's why I thought it would be fun to look at them now, so I will definitely do more!

Dr Hope's Sick Notes Very informative and entertaining channel. Loved your video and am a new subscriber. I'm on a RUclips channel medical binge seeing as how I was recently released from the NCCU/ICU after a 2 week stay due to a TBI. I had multiple skull fractures along with subarachnoid and epidural hemorrhages. There were also subdural and epidural hematomas and contusion/concussion. I had the only doctor who objected to surgery and they later found out after a CT Angio (or whatever the one with contrast that shows more of the vascular activity and whatnot) that the bleed was in a location where surgery would most likely have killed me so thank God for my Neurologist holding off. There was damage around the sinus artery or something and the frontal lobe or whatever. All due to a tumble from less than 3 feet up a step ladder which I would swear I never hit my head but apparently my brain altered my recollection of the incident. I don't know all the medical terminology and implications mind you, as most of my interaction with my Neurologist/Neurosurgeon occurred at 5am when he made his rounds before spending his day in the OR. Upon release I found out the 2 major bleeds were down to about the size of a teaspoon each (which to me still sounds bad, but apparently it was great progress), my sense of smell is probably gone forever and my vision and hearing could take up to a year to return to normal. Plus there is the added benefit of a lifetime supply of intense headaches which will vary in frequency. Due to my vision issues (trouble with both eyes focusing and double vision) my phone screen has been the easiest size screen for me to take in and I have become a RUclips junkie and have been catching up on a lot of the shows I've been missing out on. I loved all of season 1 of the Good Doctor! Sorry for rambling but the brain is such an interesting thing especially when it comes to injury and definitely hard to process. I'm still pretty cut off from society and recovering so I happily go into depth any chance I get.
To clarify. The bit at the beginning, he isn't so much starting his first day at work. He is moving from where he lived to his new location where he is trying to take up the job. In the next episode, he starts his first full day at work.

first of all your depiction is incorrect from the gate....he wasn't on his way to work, carrying tbe bag, kicking the ball, in the transit mall....he was leaving his home town on his journey to his new life. the stopping of the ball took him to flash backs of his childhood and memories of his brother. The accident occured once he arrived to the new city.
You should watch the korean version that this was based off of. Its even better :) Its called Good doctor as well

The Good Doctor is my favorite show! Being disabled (Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, a rare disability) the show gives me hope that I can get a great job and be happy when I'm older!

I have much to learn about your disability, as I imagine do many people, and some may tell you that you can't do what you want to do, but always remember that they may not know what your disease exactly is, and if they do they may not know you _ or all of you _ and that you know yourself and if you think that you can do something, if you give yourself the means to do it, you can succeed and prove them wrong. Alan Turing was laughed at at school because he would have been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome had such a diagnosis existed at that time, he was bullied for being different, and yet, with the help of his team ( which consisted of brilliant men and a brilliant woman, Joan Clarke _ it was rare at that time for women to have such a high profile job, and she did it secretly ), he put an end to WWII _ it is thought that they shortened it by 2 years and saved approximately 14 million lives.

Brian Wingel This is kinda off topic but it's like if you're trying to get a job as a waitress at a bar or anywhere like that. Good looking people generally get bigger tips and brings more frequent customers.
Since this isn't a case like that, they don't have any correlation but it is an example of what "Good Looks" can bring to a business.
Okey, I've got ASD and I must say this is the first show that depicts autism correctly. This is how we think. Both the good and the bad. I never had learning problems, on the contrary I've always been at the top of my class, whether it's chemistry or history. I've dated and even been married (and divorced).Most of us have been bullied and I certainly can get very anxious at times.

Plennnnnnty with ASD strongly disagree. I wouldn't attempt to speak for everyone. This is NOT how we think. We do not visualize diagrams on bodies, have photographic memories (which aren't real anyway), overcome our overwhelm to an extreme crash or security guards yelling at you or beligerent strangers to pull out genius-level diagnostics, nor are most of us geniuses at all (even if many are extremely bright). Using another lazy savant syndrome (that most of us don't have) just to make people think we're reasonable people is dreadfully tiresome. But, apparently, to movie makers, we're only interesting if we have super powers and can save lives the normies couldn't save.
That is NOT good or healthy ASD representation. And Freddie Highmore continually plays characters that just so happen to be geniuses. I'm tired of it.

I think there should be more discussion about people with disabilities working in the medical field. I was telling a friend that there was a new medical student that is a little person and she looked at me and was like "how can a little person be a doctor?" Then she went on that she thought only "healthy" people could be doctors.
Depends on the disability, if it's a sensory-related, it's not so feasible regardless of a person's wish. I used to consider it but I'm visually impaired ( among other things ) so...
Sure, I've been learning about my issues ever since I noticed it helps me cope with the constant check-ups )and I tend to nag other patients, too, lol - I do share my knoledge whenever needed, though) and I tend to befriend doctors who don't mind explaining what they find to their patients, what a certain diagnosis means ( I also check on the internet) and such
And yes, I call myself disabled and I think that the whole person with disabilities" trend is something made up by healthy people for other healthy people - it helps them hide/deny the obvious: some of us aren't like the rest no matter how much they'd like to beleive otherwise... BUT... if we don't see our limits, how in the world are we supposed to overcome them?
Seriously, I've seen people who refuse to wear glasses when they need to for aesthetic reasons ( when they can actually get models according to the latest trends which is more than I can say for myself)...when I've been wearing magnifiers on frames for as long as I can remember ( even at a time when lenses were made of heavy glass... my nose has suffered the consequences)

I worked in hospital for 40 years and thoroughly enjoy "The Good Doctor." I find it to be medically feasible within the bounds proposed by Dr. Hope's Sick Notes. Kudos to the show, the actors, and especially to Dr. Hope, whose comments were gentle, informative, fair, and humorous. We need more physicians, and yes, even politicians, like you, Dr. Hope. There is always Hope! (Oops, bad pun)

In response to the discussion about possibly glamorizing autism, they do feature an average type autistic patient without savant syndrome in a later episode, so you see how Murphy interacts with that patient and his family. It was a good example.
I have been impressed by their attention to certain details in surgery that I've seen missed I most or even all other medical shows I've seen over the years. It always makes my skin crawl when they don't bother to properly dress the surgical field, for example. It's a small detail, but it's pretty basic. I've noticed at least two instances on this show where they do it correctly and that was nice to see for a change.
He looks like the kind of guy that would make you an eggs Benedict, the morning after. I would like that if I was into dudes.

I want to say how awesome it is you mentioned security and gave them the props they deserve. You are the first doctor I have seen publicly mention security and say how good they are and what they do. I worked hospital security for four years and security get overlooked or looked down on but hospital security work is super tough at times. So thank you for the recognition.

Sir Shpitz...I actually started laughing at that point & singing a song about crying (I forget which one)...usually when crying happens, I sing, "Don't cry for me Argentina! The truth is I never left you!"...Just to lighten the mood & the song reminds me of crying (kinda obvious, but my mind does associations like that quite often)...ALSO, number one reason...I'm pretty goofy sometimes!..."My dad always said laughter was the best medicine...That's why allot of the us kids died of Tuberculosis!" 😜 (DEEP THOUGHTS, BY: JACK HANDY) 😂

On the example of him pointing out about the guy yelling out “someone call 911” and how he should’ve just taken the time to look around and ask the most sensible and responsible looking person he sees to call 911 instead. Yes, but I’m pretty sure that guy is supposed to be the kids father, so I’m sure in a panicky and chaotic situation like that, when it’s your child, you’re not really in the right mind to casually and calmly look around to find the best person to call, lol.
My entire immediate family have ASD. Myself, my husband, my two children are all on the spectrum. My husband and I are extremely high functioning and I presume my husband is one of the rarities with increased intellect. My son is low functioning with severe Autism. He cannot perform developmentally-appropriate behaviours at 3 years. My daughter is 14 months old and seems to be higher functioning than my son but has much greater sensory issues with touch than he does. The 'Good Doctor' could lend itself to the many other shows that make Autism out to be this miraculous diagnosis where persons with the disorder have supernatural intellect. Sadly, people are always asking me how "brilliant" we all are--and for a mother watching her son whom will likely never leave home, get married, have children etc. it's the worst question to ask me.

Do you know the show Community? It's not a medical show, but there is a character who is said to be a very realistic representation of an autistic person. I don't know much about autism, so I don't know how accurate it is, but I really like the character and he isn't an absolute genius but functions in day-to-day life. Sometimes there are some problems, but over all his life works out.

I deal with a lot of doctors in the NHS as I have Sickle Cell HbSS, and they never bother explaining in a way that’s easy to understand. You doctors basically have your own language. I had some woman in a puzzle piece t-shirt come through my line at work and tell me that The Good Doctor is offensive and not a good representation of ASD. I actually have aspergers but I'm female so people can't really tell that I have it because females pass better than males. I just thought it was really ridiculous because the the autism community has dropped the puzzle piece symbol because of organizations like autism speaks who are actually offensive.
I look at Doctor Murphy and I see all the traits of someone with ASD and how other people have prejudices towards him.
I think the customer in my line was just being bull headed because all she knows is how low functioning people with autism are.

I think the ability to spot tiny changes comes more from Autisim side than the Savant side.. Savant side just knows what it means/might mean. People with Autisim (and also ADD/ADHD) are quite good at spotting random tiny things what others wouldn't.
Depending on where they're in a spectrum and how well they can communicate those things.
Also I wonder why Autisim (and ADD/ADHD) is still said to be Mental problem in English language/places. Here my doctors etc. made the clear difference those being neurological problems and just how your brain is build on differently - nothing mentally wrong with that. Those neurological problems might make you more mentally unhealthy and make you weaker to mental problems but it's just how your neurological brain is.. Saying that don't mark it is a mental disorder because it's not right.
You should do this with a Scrubs episode! :)

I learned a lot on how to behave if i witness an accident ! I always thought it was stupid someone shouting " call 911!" because nobody does it, they assume someone else will do it. I am happy to learn i was right ! you should give the task to someone in person, they will fall into the responsibility and also think they are doing something right too.
I absolutely love The Good Doctor, and this video explaining your perspective as a real doctor! I'm not a medical professional, so I can't determine the accuracy of a medical show or not, but I do have ASD and have watched the show from the perspective of a real person who has ASD, and I find it to be very accurate with the acting and portrayal. Of course, no two ASD patients are the same, but I can say that everything that Dr. Shaun Murphy does in the show is accurate in terms of possible symptoms of ASD. The reaction to loud noises and chaos, the not liking being questioned, not liking being touched, not being able to let thoughts go, etc. These are all things that I deal with on a daily basis, and Freddie Highmore does extremely well in the way that he portrays these scenarios. I will say that if it had been me in that airport scene, I probably would have completely shut down when that sign came crashing down. But Dr. Murphy is a doctor and has had time to learn to adapt to high-stress situations, so it makes sense that he was able to pull himself together after a few moments and get moving again. I'm usually very critical of shows dealing with disability, because I have several disabilities myself. Along with ASD, I also have lyme disease and mitochondrial disease, am a low-level paraplegic, am mute, and have even dealt with cotard's syndrome on and off over the past year. Many shows and movies don't get disability right. But I watched The Good Doctor, and they did a very good job with it and I feel they represented ASD very accurately.
I wanted to say all of this because you mentioned not having much experience with people who have ASD, so I wanted to sort of give a review from from my side of the issues the show deals with. I'll definitely be watching more of your videos! This review was great and very informative!

I love the fact that you avoided the word “Disability”! I work with kids with developmental difficulties such as autism and I’m always floored by the abilities they do possess! This show really shows how it is not only possible but also how valuable people who think differently are to society. I’m amazed how Freddy Highmore is able to portray ASD so accurately and consistently throughout the episodes of the Good Doctor and how he does not show Shawn as a helpless individual but rather gives insight into his character’s thought process. Thanks for shining the light on this amazing show!
I've no issue with the word 'disability' as long as we pinpoint what the cause of the disability is. With autism it's highly likely, given the variability in behaviour seen in autistic people (yes, folks - that's the term _most_ of us prefer!), that the disabiling factors are mostly crammed in that bit of the person-environment interface where there's a lack of good fit between the social/physical environment and the autistic person. This is an issue I explored in my first M. Ed. paper whilst training up in educational psychology.
David Andrews yeah, avoiding words changes nothing. As long as you don’t have derogatory intent while using them there should be no problem. I know an asperger person that speaks about it freely using wording that outsiders might find problematic but it’s simply because she is blunt and people give conotations to words that is not her intent when using the most precise terms she knows.
It’s not about issues, it’s about the nature of Person First Language. Autistic person, disabled, and disability have been shown to mentally prime people for negative thinking in regards to people with difficulties. It might not seem like an issue to you, but it might be an issue for the family down the road that doesn’t understand that autism is neither good nor evil, simply different.
Keep in mind, person first language is not intended for those of us who are on the autism spectrum/other needs, it’s designed for people who have had little to no exposure to ASD and other learning difficulties. It literally points out that they are a person before a label, pointing out that they are not defined by the label, but rather that they define it. My parents thought my life was over when I got my diagnoses. (You should have seen the waterworks lol) The difficulties haven’t gone away for me but now I get to choose if someone sees my ASD. I understand that’s not a source of power for everyone, but it is for me.
The point is that Person First Language like “people with autism” or “man on the spectrum” isn’t there for those WITH difficulties, it’s for those who don’t. Those of us living with diverse needs know how capable we really are, we are not the ones who need convincing. As I said before, we want to see ability, not the lack of ability.

Well ... the issue was researched and most autistic people prefer the term 'autistic'.
It's an unavoidable part of who we are. It isn't everything - but it is integral to us.
As for 'disability' ... two things to consider:
1- for a dx to be made, there must be a disabling effect going on in two or more areas of life and in one or more areas of functioning
2- not all disability arises directly/solely from the diagnosed characteristic
Again ... a topic I'm very well acquainted with as a result of research and study.
the thing with language and humans is; if you don’t make the stigma of a condition go away, when you ask people to use different term to identify said condition, the negative conotation will transfer to the new term again and again no matter what word you ask people to use instead.
Great observations about what the writers of the show could have added into the show to make it more accurate.

I came for a reaction video to see what a doctor thought about the lame-ish applause scene, but stayed for actual educational content and you have a great sence of humor! I burst out laughing when you described the process of passing a football to a young person
Sometimes you just have to accept it is an entretaining show and let go of the professional stuff. Really. I am a multimedia technician (among more, videographer and video editor) and you have no ideia how hard it was to watch shows and movies with errors on images (i even found a clip in one movie where the videographer's were appearing!). I could only apreciate and let myself entretain with shows when i let go my professional know-how. And also, i think this show is more about autism awearness than medical accuracy. Many autistic people take high degrees and never find a work just because of their diagnose, even if they are perfectly able to do it. As you said: people around them don't want to change their lifes to make it easier for them.
Raquel Sofia...Great comment! We tend to forget that this is a drama with a big medical aspect... But IN NO SOLELY a "medical drama"...It's a very accurate show about someone with AUTISM, who happens to also have SAVANT SYNDROME as well & in no way are the two mutually exclusive...Yes, SEAN happens to be great at being a doctor. There are personal reasons to him for wanting to be a doctor...But I digress, the show is more so about raising awareness of AUTISM & for that, it is VERY accurate & natural & makes it more about everyone just living their lives & someone just happens to be Autistic...But we come to learn that once we get to know each other, we are all individuals who are just living our lives. It's a show that is very organic & natural in it's portrayal of an Autistic person & UNLIKE other shows on the subject, DOES NOT CONSTANTLY REMIND YOU OF THE OBVIOUS or make being Autistic a stereotype or a comic punchline...In THE GOOD DOCTOR, the way we learn about Autism is watching SEAN just live his own specific, individual life & exposure is the best way to learn about things...then we just start seeing that no matter what anyone's life is about...We are all individuals in the end & we each have our own, unique personalities. 😀

You are impressively smart, perceptive, and articulate. I watched this show (I'm a nursing professor but have been in critical care, mostly emergency department) for 30 years. I watched the first 3 episodes. I found it entertaining, but the lack of realism was negligent. No wonder so many non-medical people have such unrealistic expectations and perceptions of health care professionals. Additionally, show after show, after TV show focuses on physicians and never nurses (in a positive light). This show is a disservice to all. (off my soap box). I love Freddy, but unfortunately he's not very different in his character, demeanor, even his look from Norman Bates (see "Bates Motel" TV series, on about 5 years). Back to your post. Bravo. You're wonderful to watch and your dialogue was spot on (I'm sure it was edited a bit). Cheers.

I just want to point out that these days it's not silly to shout out for someone to call 911 because people are more than likely going to use their phones to record the event and post it on social media rather than call for an ambulance.

Hahaha! I think you may be right! I think designating someone to do it is still the best way, unless there is no-one around then obviously shouting is a very good idea.
There is a phenomenon called the Bystander Effect where the more people there are present the less likely people are to help; that's why I say it's good to designate someone to get call 911 - whereas shouting it means people might think that someone else is doing it.

Episode 6 "Not Fake" I highly recommend this one, during the 'graveyard shift' there are multiple patients rushed in from a bad car crash. In this episode there are not one but 2 experimental procedures that occur, a women with 3rd degree burns is treated with tilapia skins and the other patient being a man whose family has to choose between amputating their sons leg or getting surgery to put in a 3D printed femur. In this episode theres of course lots of medical things going on, but also it shows house a hospital runs. Theres conflict deciding on whether to amputate or not, the parents want to amputate however the wife does not. The episode shows how a hospital would handle the situation. I do not work at a hospital so I am curious to know what in this episode is accurate and what is not.
If only I had a professor like you who explains things much simpler when I was in medical school I would be on my last year off to my residency. Cause there are medical professors who just complicates things. 😑
Loving the"Good Doctor". In last new episode saw Chris D'Elia is the new neighbor. Can't wait to see what he and his physical-just-to-the-edge comedy bring to the show. A real-life influencer on the sheltered...that I hope they don't take too far. Let the sheltered doctor stand strong in his clarity and morality and gain even more experience from there...I hope.

I watched the Korean version a few years ago before this one came out and was shocked it was being made into an American drama. I loved the Korean one, so I was so excited for this. However, after watching a few episodes, I just couldn't watch it anymore. They just changed so much from the original, they made it into that typical "everyone sleeps with everyone" thing that American shows do, and the main character wasn't growing that quickly compared to his Korean counterpart. If you like this version and don't mind reading subtitles, I totally suggest the Korean version. :)
I've always been put off by scenes where surgeons are carrying out conversations that have nothing to do with the task at hand, like they're just casually discussing their personal problems in the middle of a life-saving surgery.

For people that do surgery on a daily basis the vast majority is painfully routine. Most is not an emergency or a crisis although many of these doctor shows also falsely make this impression. Doing routine portions of surgery and for example, talking about the weather is similar to walking and chewing gum. One has zero effect on the other.
