Gasly isn't waiting for a Red Bull seat, and there is no good other team to switch to in 2023. Some have suggested McLaren, but Gasly prefers a balanced car with a bit of oversteer (and a relatively strong front end). The McLaren is the most understeery car on the grid and Gasly would have a really bad time with it. (Mostly because Norris is their #1 driver and he prefers understeer and a stronger rear end and weaker front). This is, by the way, the same reason Ricciardo is struggling at McLaren. Ricciardo drives best in a car with a strong front end and sliding rear, with oversteer that is complementary to his divebombs and late braking maneuvers. The McLaren is opposite his driving style. Same thing as Kimi at Ferrari in 2014 btw, where the Ferrari was understeering like crazy and the front end was very weak - exactly how Alonso loved it. But opposite Kimi's preference.

Ferrari understeered before turning. After car was in the middle of the turn it suddenly oversteered. You can see that on Alonso´s onboard in Abu Dhabi 3rd sector. That car was horrible, I still cant believe how did Alonso get P2 in Hungary.

I don't think it is a coincidence that he has a one-year contract for 2023. He seems to be waiting for a seat at Mercedes or McLaren (arguably more likely Mercedes). The contracts of Hamilton and Ricciardo both end after 2023, so it seems Gasly is waiting in the wings to replace an outgoing Hamilton or Ricciardo, with 2024 being hopefully is breakthrough season. I'm very curious to see how he compares to Russel or Norris personally.
Another factor contributing to the contract extension is the close friendship of Gasly and Tsunoda; they are both likely happy as teammates and Tost is probably happy with the as teammates if nothing else for the sheer marketability.

@@Limegreenedragon But Toto is very pragmatic. He won't risk Nyck with a Merc seat for his very first F1 season. Things would have turned out different, had he secured the Williams seat, but it is what it is. Gasly in comparison has good F1 experience, good pace, good qualifying ability, and even half a season in a top team alongside Max! He'll fit right in as Russell's no. 2.
It will be somewhat similar at McLaren, but Norris is closer to Albon (who'c VERY good btw) than Russell, but with comparable Raw pace. He could find it tough to compete with Norris in terms of that raw pace, even if the gap could ve lesser compared ot Russell.
Or, all this is just conjecture and he slots in Lewis's seat and starts competing with Russell, or bets Lando. Thing is, we can never really know unless it happens. My two cents? He'll be Lewis' recommendation when he retires.

I mean if Piastri can’t get a seat I think it’s pretty fucking good for Gasly to at least be in f1 and in a good midfield team. In a nutshell: We want to know if he’s an adaptable driver, so he needs to prove and SHOW that he can drive any car and deliver.
With Ricciardo struggling and both of them coming from the Red Bull family, Ricciardo’s unexpected poor performances transfers the same concerns and doubts towards Gasly.
So Aldas makes a good point, that even if he moves to a lower team like Williams, he has to drive that car as if it’s an audition. An audition that he has adaptability skills and can exceed expectations of the car’s ability,
Otherwise, why should a team take that risk when the obvious comparison is Ricciardo.
I also thought he already was signed until the end of ‘23 but I also think Gasly doesn’t have much of a menu to choose from anyway

Lando and George are the most overhyped drivers with the assumption they will not crack under pressure, need way more consistent real good results than a P2 and P3 result here and there in between mistakes. Racing on the limit and under pressure and specially at the top of the field is a totally different game, Pierre was not good enough when he had his chance, this is a sport and not bromance entertainment as many f1 fans (not motorsport fans) would like it to, in top sport you don't get many chances and certainly not in F1. Charles shows how hard he is and he is better than Norris and Russel no matter how much people try to talk Norris and Russel to a status they not have shown yet.

As much as I like Pierre Gasly and think he has talent, there is deffinitely a point to be made when talking about his career. I was dissapointed to see him sign another contract with Alpha Tauri as this means it's another year stagnating at a midfield team. And appart from the occasional lucky podium, this team can't offer much to him with their current car. I just feel like he is never going to get that breackthrough contract with a higher team becuase of the enourmous talent present in f1 and that he will never get a better opportunity.
