Hello David, wanted to hear your thoughts on a question that I had while watching your video. In regards to the law of Moses still being valid just as the Hebrews followed it; if that is the case why did Jesus teach that loving God and loving your neighbor was fulfillment of the law (Matthew 22:37-40) which Paul taught in his letter to the Galatian church (Galatians 5:14). Thank you and God bless 🙏❤️

The law needs to remain valid until judgement is pronounced. Just like any human court, you can not pronounce judgment without the "LAW" to as a reference.

    • @craigrodger3628
      @craigrodger3628 Месяц назад

And judgement came in 70 AD the temple and Jerusalem destroyed, people overlook the significance of this and what it means, it is the passing of the old heavens and earth covenant. The law and the prophets are the two witnesses used as a testimony against them which resulted in the "stoning" of Jerusalem by the surrounding armies of Rome whom God used to carry this judgement out,. So being found guilty for the blood of the prophets and saints ,and the Son of God himself...this destruction cleared the way for the New Jerusalem, the spiritual city of God a New heavens and earth covenant people. The law brought death, christ defeated death on our behalf by fulfilling the requirements of the law once and for all, being the sacrificial lamb and high priest ...we are no longer under the law ,sin has been dealt with...believe it ,and be saved is the message of the gospel.

Moses delivered the law from the mountain (“nobody kept it”). Jesus delivered the law of Moses x10 in His “Sermon on the Mount” as well and guess what,,, Nobody kept it either! “Chop off your hand, pluck out your eye, look and you’re an adulterer, get angry and you’re a murderer, be perfect just like God”. Now, His audience should have felt buried. That was Christs purpose! Pharisees wanted to kill Him, but the rest of His audience was desperate for salvation. Keep reading! Salvation is coming soon thereafter! If you read a Bible with fresh eyes and in context you can’t miss the purpose! We are gentiles invited to Christ alone!

I'm so grateful for this teaching and I wish we could discuss further. I have been accused of being a Pharisee and a Legalist. I know that since you don't know me you'll have to take my word when I say that's not true, but the tragedy I'm getting at is that those accusations from people in the church have strengthened my wife's recent resolve to leave me. I keep undulating between the cost I've paid in this life, and the cross I'm willing to bear for the next. There's no way for a reader to judge this situation without knowing more, but I'll add that I wasn't even that strict and never placed the weight of salvation on keeping Torah, only the status of the person in the kingdom. I also didn't expect anyone else to do what I was doing, but my faithfulness did impact those around me. For example I had my hair a little long on the temples for a while. I think keeping the law is related to sanctification. A good point to make is that we can't keep the temple rituals, and the cleanliness requirements are covered by the blood of Jesus, so in these cases it's not about performing the law, but recognizing that the law still stands and I'm justified by his blood and not my performance. The devastation is so horrible for my family but I trust that He is working something in me and my family. I could use prayers. But please don't try to convict me. There's nothing you'd say that I haven't already said to myself. God bless my family in Jesus name.

Next time remind them that the Messiahs contention with the Pharisees was that they did NOT keep the law but kept man made traditions. Peace

Something that always gets an ironic chuckle out of me is how many pastors, priests, even twice a year 'Christians' will do insane mental gymnastics to condemn 'judaizing'. If they would take 10 minutes to google important event in the 'early church' they would see that the large majority of the prohibitions surrounding Torah observance and feast/Sabbath keeping came from the council of Laodicea in 363AD. It's funny to me because if they would jump to that ever avoided book of Revelation, they would see that Laodicea is the one church mentioned that Christ has nothing good to say about.
    Revelation 3 NKJV
14 “And to the [i]angel of the church [j]of the Laodiceans write, ‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither [k]cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. 17 Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’-and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked- 18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten.[l] Therefore be [m]zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. 21 To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. 22 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’ ”
Strange that the "Lukewarm Church" is the only one mentioned that literally makes Him vomit, and yet that's exactly where we have gotten +1600 years of church behavior. The even more ironic part to me is that this council wanted to remove the canonical status for the very book that condemned it (Revelation), along with 22 books of the Tanakh and no-one seems to care. 🤷‍♂

The book of Acts make it quite clear that gentile followers of Jesus are not required to follow the whole law. It's also been impossible even for Jewish believers to follow large portions of the law since the Temple was destroyed in 70 AD. We can no longer make Sin offerings or any other sacrifices, and no longer need to, since Jesus Himself has paid the price for our sin.
So while the law has not passed away, it only applies to those circumcised into the Old Covenant, and even then, only those parts which have not been fulfilled by Jesus.

    • @DavidWilberBlog
      @DavidWilberBlog  Месяц назад +3

I'm glad you agree that the Law has not passed away, and that the question comes down to HOW (not whether) the Law applies. Regarding Gentile observance, while the apostles did not require adult Gentiles to get circumcised (because the Law of Moses itself does not require it), they did expect them to obey the commands of the Torah that apply to them (in my opinion, this would include things like Sabbath, festivals, etc.). We see in Acts 15:21 that the apostles expected that Gentile believers would attend synagogue services every Sabbath to hear the Law of Moses preached. As NT scholar Eyal Regev writes: “The implications [of Acts 15:21] are that since the Torah is proclaimed and studied in the synagogue on a regular basis, the God-fearing Christians would gain further knowledge and adhere to Jewish law after being accepted into the (Jewish-) Christian community.”

The language of "heaven and earth passing away" is frequently used in Jewish apocalyptic literature, both within and outside the biblical canon, to depict the destruction of the physical creation. For a clear example, refer to 2 Peter 3. What biblical authors are referencing with this language did not occur in the first century.

Obeying the law even into the new world is prophesied in the OT. The prophecy shows several things - it first gives a summary of the dead being resurrected, judged, and those who have loved and obeyed God are given the new world, then it gives a more detailed version where Jesus comes to unite two flocks under one shepherd and will give a new covenant, and just like the first covenant (which hasn't been abolished either), we are expected to keep the law, and lastly we will be given the new earth where we will continue to obey the law:
    Ezekiel 37:12-28 KJVS
Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. [13] And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves, [14] And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, and performed it, saith the LORD. [15] The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying, [16] Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions: [17] And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand. [18] And when the children of thy people shall speak unto thee, saying, Wilt thou not shew us what thou meanest by these? [19] Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand. [20] And the sticks whereon thou writest shall be in thine hand before their eyes. [21] And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land: [22] And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all: [23] Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwellingplaces, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God. [24] And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them. [25] And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children's children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever. [26] Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore. [27] My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people. [28] And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore.
Even when heaven and earth pass God's word (to include the law) will continue Matthew 24:35 KJVS
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

      Here's my exegesis:

***This is a very summarized prophecy of the second coming - everyone will be resurrected and judged and a new world created after satan is defeated.
[21] And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land:
***This is a prophecy that the Jews and gentiles will be united spiritually through Jesus Christ, by the faith and obedience to Jesus, so that there is no longer a separation between Jew and Gentile (the other tribes and non-isrealites who don’t believe in God) and at the second coming will be given the new earth (again this goes back to the two flocks being brought under one shepherd). Gentile is anyone who is not a Jew and does not believe in and/or obey God, per multiple source when searching “what is a Gentile on the internet, but also per the Bible through reading the books you mention. Why did the tribes separate and why was Judah (Jews) the people of God while the other weren’t and became Gentiles?:
***2 Kings 22:16-20 KJVS Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read: [17] Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched. [18] But to the king of Judah which sent you to enquire of the LORD, thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, As touching the words which thou hast heard; [19] Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD. [20] Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.
***Members of the 10 tribes, practicing idolatry like gentiles do, scattered after the destruction of Israel all over the place - to include Asia where the heathen were.
[22] And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all: [23] Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwelling places, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God.
***One nation is the church of Jesus - all who believe on him. Reiterating two flocks, one shepherd. The one flock is the Jews who believe in God, the other is all the other tribes who forsook God (gentiles) and any “stranger” that wishes to love and obey God (this would include Assyrian islamists, Indian Hidnuist, etc..also gentiles under the definition of a gentile being anyone non-jew and who does not love and obey God). This is also prophesied here:
***Isaiah 56:6-8 KJVS Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant; [7] Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people. [8] The Lord GOD which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith, Yet will I gather others to him, beside those that are gathered unto him.
(This is saying that even back then a stranger (non Israelite) could obtain salvation even before Jesus, but also applies to the future when Jesus would come and send Jews (the apostles) to the gentile lands to hand deliver the opportunity of salvation)
[24] And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them.
***This is the big part - when Jesus comes to unite jew and gentile (the two flocks) and upon that happening they are to walk in His judgements, observe his statutes, and do them.
***I think we can agree Jesus is the Shepherd who will be the prince forever. The new covenant is that which Jesus brought.
[27] My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people. [28] And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore.
***This is the tabernacle that is in heaven (we learn about this when Moses makes a replica of the tabernacle and furnishings Exodus 25:8-9) which will then be the new earth where everyone who had faith and obeyed His commandments will be.

I don't think Paul disagrees with Jesus. In 2 Timothy 3:15-16, Paul wrote that "all Scripture" (in context, the Old Testament, see v. 15) is profitable for training in righteousness. In Romans, he wrote that our faith does not nullify the Law but rather establishes it (Rom 3:31) and that the Holy Spirit empowers believers to keep the Law, while those led by the flesh refuse to submit to the Law (Rom 8:4, 7). Regarding Peter, I don't think he disagreed with Jesus either, and I don't think the point of his vision was about giving him permission to eat prohibited animals. Here's a video where I read an excerpt from Dr. Jason Staples's paper on that passage: ruclips.net/video/qpIt_krGXLY/видео.htmlsi=4WEsRvAPvstVRqvG

I provide disagreement to this message.
Remember these words in Matthew 17-18 are part of a formal sermon. He wants to bring clarity regarding His sermon and ministry. It was important for Him to say this at this point in the sermon, because He then proceeded to contrast the teaching of the Scribes and Pharisees with the true meaning of the Old Testament.
The relativistic view of the scribes and Pharisees led them to accept some Scriptural injunctions and to reject others. This resulted in selective obedience that produced only superficial righteousness. That type of righteousness, Jesus declared, would not be adequate for being in God’s favor.
When the pharisees and scribes interpreted the law for the Jewish people, they took it as law. So when He interprets it differently, or opposingly, they may think he has come to destroy the law.
So we wanted to bring clarity and context as to what he was saying and why.
Perhaps put aside that Jesus came to fulfill the penalty of the law that is death. That is not likely in view here. They were not thinking of that, nor would they might be thinking of that. So why address it at this early stage?
Therefore, when He is not talking about Himself fulfilling the law, He is talking about His teaching, and it is His teaching we are in the midst of here.
Now, in regards to the 119 Ministry’s claims. There are two notable quotes presented by 119 to support its claim that the Torah is binding on believers: “Jesus does not do away with the OT law, He calls people back to it. And he holds them to it.” Carmen Imes
“ Although this verse is the subject of lively controversy, it is unambiguous, and does indeed command obedience to the whole Torah “ J. A Overman.
What is missing here is that the Law and the Prophets needs also to be understood in context as they pertained to you the individual, or to a nation or a group of people, and even in the time and circumstances they are living.
There are laws not applicable to the believing Gentile, but holds true with the Jew if he or she wanted to continue in it. Nowhere in the NT is the Jew told to stop his customs, including circumcision.
The law says to stone someone violating the Sabbath. Jesus never spoke against that, indeed it is still binding - He even upheld it here - but that law applied to the nation of Israel - and it had a purpose for Israel. And there are many others, such as the consequences of getting caught having leaven in the house during the Feast of UB.
These things don’t happen anymore because the Theocracy of Israel doesn’t exist. But if it did, and it will again, then these laws will likely again be in full force.
As a simple example, there are laws in other countries that people here in the US break all the time. There are laws in the US that make no sense in other countries. A law is binding depending on its reach.
    We see in Romans 2:14-15:
… for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness ..
The Gentiles do not have the Mosaic Law in the sense that God did not give it to them. Therefore He will not judge them by that law. They are not binding on them whether they become a Christian believer or not.
The Jews in Paul's day did have it, and God would judge them by it (v. 12).
Even Gentiles who do not have the Mosaic Law know that they should do things that are right and not do things that are wrong. Right and wrong are the basic elements of the Mosaic Law.
Gentiles have a law that is instinctive, namely, an intuitive perception of what is right and what is wrong. All people have this. For some it is suppressed.
For example, there are universal laws about stealing and murder that are well adopted in most countries.
Therefore, Gentiles did not sin if they did not clean out the leaven out of their house at the appointed time, or even eat Pork, or did not pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
So what was He fulfilling in His teaching?
He gave us the right way in how to interpret and teach the laws and commandments of scripture. By magnifying it, and not destroying it in this context, He is not intending to say the whole of the Torah is binding on all believers at all times. It is a mistake to believe and teach otherwise.
We note also Luke does not record these words in his account. The reason? He understood that it for the above reasons, as his fellow gentiles who were not under the mosaic law or under dictates of the Scribes and the Pharisees. And further, not to come under the law when becoming believers (Acts 15).
It is really therefore not that complicated. It gets complicated when we introduce things like the “Church is Israel”, that Acts 15 means only a start of a Gentile learning to obey all the Torah among other claims, such as Peter’s remarks in verse 10 is the yoke of the Pharisee teachings. It is the yoke of the real Torah that Israel never could bear as history shows.

Jesus also taught that heaven and earth would pass away in his First Century generation at the end of the age in Mat. 24:1-35. And Peter taught that the heaven and earth were about to be burned up and dissolved by fire, also in the First Century generation, as they were "hastening the coming of the day of God" (2 Pet. 3), because "The end of all things is at hand" (1 Pet. 4:7). "All things" included that old heaven and that old earth, which were to be destroyed at the Day of the Lord, when Israel would be put to death by YHWH (Is. 65:13-15), and slain as the dragon (Is. 27).
If you understand that Israel, the old body, was "heaven and earth", to which the Song of Moses was given (Deut. 31:24-32:43), that would pass away when the sun, moon and stars would fall (Mat. 24:29), then you will understand that the Lord did come to fulfil the Law and the Prophets by bringing that power and system to its catastrophic end, "when the shattering of the power of the holy people comes to an end all these things would be finished" (Dan. 12:7) including the rebellion of the wicked in Israel (the resurrection of the unjust, Dan. 12:2) and the rescue of the remnant only from Israel (Dan. 12:1-3), when the Second Temple would be abominated and desolated (Dan. 12:11). That is the context and sense of the fulfillment of that old law, and it passing away, in that generation, and at that time, and in that way.

This is an untenable belief if you read the apostolic fathers. Early Christians almost immediately distinguished themselves from Jewish practices such as circumcision, fasting, and keeping the sabbath.
The underlying suggestion of your work is that almost all Christians for most of time have not truly been following the Lord, have absolutely misunderstood the scriptures, and really, that they have blasphemed Him. Your work implies that the Church never sustained the faith handed down through Christ and the apostles, in other words, that the Church itself apostatized within the first couple hundred years and less. Christians understood the Eucharist as the “Passover lamb”. “He has become for us a Passover lamb”. The temple is the body of Christ, the ecclesia. You are completely reinterpreting how ancient Christians used scripture. Even within the New Testament we see the apostles constantly refer to Old Testament imagery in a typological way. They interpret scripture according to the incarnation and resurrection of Christ - this was a massive shift not just in how scripture was interpreted but also how it was put into practice.
“I have no taste for corruptible food nor for the pleasures of this life. I desire the bread of God, which is the flesh of Jesus Christ, who was of the seed of David; and for drink I desire his blood, which is love incorruptible” (Letter to the Romans 7:3 [A.D. 110]).
“Take note of those who hold heterodox opinions on the grace of Jesus Christ which has come to us, and see how contrary their opinions are to the mind of God. . . . They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer because they do not confess that the Eucharist is the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, flesh which suffered for our sins and which that Father, in his goodness, raised up again. They who deny the gift of God are perishing in their disputes” (Letter to the Smyrnaeans 6:2-7:1 [A.D. 110]).

@@josiahalexander5697 Thanks for the comment. No, not all Christians have been wrong about the validity of Torah. The "Early Christians" were not a monolithic entity. There have always been Christian communities that have continued to keep those aspects of the Torah (Sabbath, food laws, etc.) throughout history. For instance, two fifth-century church historians (Socrates Scholasticus and Sozomen) testify that nearly the entire Christian world outside of Alexandria and Rome continued to keep the Sabbath as late as the 5th century AD. The Nazarenes were a Torah observant Christian community that continued to exist well into the fourth century. You also have groups like the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, which has a long history of Torah observance going back to the fifth century, and the seventh-day Baptists, which emerged at the start of the Reformation. You also have several early Christians, like Polycarp, who advocated for the celebration of Passover in accordance with the Jewish calendar as a matter of obedience to God. See chapter 3 in my book "Remember the Sabbath." See also the collection of essays in the book "The Ways that Never Parted." See also "A Brief History of Sunday" by the historian Justo L. González. If you think can earn your way to Heaven apart from Christ's crucifixion, in your GUILTY place, you are truly unfortunately going to Hell. "Fulfill" means "complete", never "continue". Hence the phrase "fulfilled prophecies." The Law has no power to save you, but only to condemn you. The just shall live by faith:
"For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them." - Galatians 3:10

Thanks for the comment. Christians don't believe we "earn" our way to heaven. We affirm that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ. The reason that Christians believe we should keep God's commandments is not to be saved but rather because we love Jesus. Regarding πληρόω ("fulfill"), this term has different senses depending upon the context. One of those senses is indeed "bring to completion," but the immediate context of Matthew 5:17-20 favors "fully carry out" or "show forth truth meaning." You commit a lexical fallacy if you impose your preferred meaning of a word onto Matthew 5:17 without considering its context. See this video: ruclips.net/video/syRqJjhckDU/видео.html

The sacrificial system is not applicable today because it requires the presence of a temple in Jerusalem and a fully functioning Levitical priesthood, neither of which currently exist. If many scholars (including evangelical fundamentalists like John MacArthur) are correct, then these things will all be restored in millennium after the Messiah returns. The sacrifices will function as memorials that point backward to the Messiah's work, just as they previously functioned as memorials pointing forward to his work. In the meantime, just like when God's people were exiled in Babylon, we obey the laws we are able to obey in our current situation.

Thanks for the comment. This is not the same thing as Jesus "getting rid of" the sacrificial system. For more on this, see the work on Hebrews from Dr. David Moffitt, Dr. Matthew Thiessen, and Dr. Jesper Svartvik. Hope that helps!

You must consider the change of priesthood as Hebrews 7, which demands another law when all prophecy is fulfilled, which did happen in AD70 when the heavenly and earthly sanctuaries of Hebrews 8 were destroyed. The new covenant came in at the Cross, but the old covenant vanished in AD70, with 40 years for the repentance of the lost sheep.

    • @DavidWilberBlog
      @DavidWilberBlog  Месяц назад +2

Nobody takes seriously the idea that all prophecy was fulfilled in AD 70. Regarding Hebrews 7, the key to understanding the author’s argument is found in the meaning of the word “change.” There are two Greek words translated as “change” in Hebrews 7:12, both of them related: μετατίθημι and μετάθεσις. These Greek words convey the sense of “transforming,” “translating,” or “transferring.” What’s most interesting about these words, however, is that the author of Hebrews uses them again a few chapters later to speak about Enoch’s ascension to heaven (Heb 11:5). Why is it significant that these words are used to describe Enoch’s being “taken up” or transferred? Because when he uses these exact words to speak about a “change” in the priesthood and law, he means them in the same way he speaks about the transferring of Enoch. Since the Messiah belongs to a different priesthood-an ascended, heavenly priesthood-we must recognize that there is a different qualification or “law” for that priesthood. That qualification is “an indestructible life” (Heb 7:16). So, the change in the law was not a change in the Law of Moses. That is, the author is not claiming that the Law of Moses’s qualifications for Levitical priests have been altered. Those laws still apply on earth. To be a priest on earth, you have to be from the tribe of Levi. According to the author of Hebrews himself, that law still applies on earth, which is why the Messiah cannot be a priest on earth (Heb 8:4). But to be a priest in heaven requires a different law-a law that applies in heaven. That is what the author means when he says that this heavenly priesthood requires a “change in the law.”

So, how good are you at keeping the law... how is that working out for you. Keeping the law does not save anyone. Only our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ can give us salvation from our sin, not doing the works of the law, which the Scribes and the Pharisees taught the Jews to keep. Paul said it is by faith you are saved, not by works. Even Paul admitted that he could not keep the law. By works, Paul meant living your life under the rule of the law. If I could keep the law perfectly all of life, then I could boast in my own self-righteousness, apart from the righteousness of Jesus.

I do not think this passage is saying that the law is abolished, it clearly says that it is not, but does the law apply to gentiles who follow Christ? Are we to become Jewish, be circumcised, follow all dietary and cleansing requirements, etc? Many of Jesus’ first followers believed the same, those whom Paul called the circumcision group. This is what the first council in acts is about, do the gentiles need to be brought into the old covenant? The councils decided that the burden was too much for the Jews to bear, why put it on the gentiles and create a barrier to the faith. In Matthew Jesus saiid that what they loose or bind here, the father will loose or bind in heaven. He gave them the authority to loose the law, or atleast not make it a requirement for entering and believing. Peter also had a dream saying to eat all the unclean animals, which I don’t believe was about simply dietary laws. He was staying away from the gentiles, being pressured by other Jewish Christians as they were seen as unclean. God himself said to Peter, do not make unclean and hat he himself has declared clean. All that to say, read and interpret scripture with the entirety of scripture. Not all of scripture was written about or for us gentiles, but for Israel. We are not under the old covenant but the new. Love your neighbours as yourself, this one command fulfils the entirety of the law, it’s from the Old Testament, but was commanded of Jesus in the new, it applies to all.
    God bless.

Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you agree that Jesus did not abolish the Law. You asked, "but does the law apply to gentiles who follow Christ?" The answer is yes. Jesus told his disciples to make disciples of "all nations" and to "teach them to observe all that I commanded you" (Matthew 28:19-20). Jesus's teachings were to be passed on to the Gentiles, and the Gentiles were to be instructed to obey Jesus's teachings. This would include the sermon on the mount, in which Jesus declares the ongoing authority of the Law of Moses and urges his followers to obey it.
Regarding the nature of Gentile observance, while the apostles did not require adult Gentiles to get circumcised (because the Law of Moses itself does not require it), they did expect them to obey the commands of the Torah that apply to them (in my opinion, this would include things like Sabbath, festivals, food laws, etc.).
Regarding Peter's dream, see this video where I read an excerpt from a paper from Dr. Jason Staples on that: ruclips.net/video/qpIt_krGXLY/видео.htmlsi=uylYhBOZ7kx3pRp7

Interesting, so Christians are to keep the 613 commands given in the law, and the commands given by Jesus? Can you name them all by heart? Are you more righteous than the Pharisees, which is needed to enter the kingdom of heaven?
The council in acts was not just about circumcision, if it was they would say that the law needed to be followed but not circumcision, but instead they said for the gentiles to follow the Noahide laws, which were given by God before the law of Moses.
Your argument is compelling if the verses were taken on their own, but not when read with the rest of the New Testament. I think you may cause your brothers and sisters to stumble.

    • @DavidWilberBlog
      @DavidWilberBlog  Месяц назад +1

@@mikeschaller9233 The number 613 is a much later tradition developed in the middle ages. Similarly, the notion of "Noahide laws" for Gentiles developed centuries after the time of the apostles and could not be what they prescribed in Acts 15. Rather, most Christian NT scholars think that the apostles saw the Gentiles as analogous to the "strangers" among Israel in the OT, and hence required to follow the commandments of the Torah given to the strangers. Most Christians already believe we should follow most of the commandments that apply to us today (don't murder, lie, steal, etc.). There are really only a few that I think should be revisited (Sabbath, food laws, festivals, etc.). Regarding the righteousness of the Pharisees in Matt 5:20, Jesus's point is that the Pharisees are not that righteous. Read the rest of Matthew. He is constantly rebuking the Pharisees for breaking the commandments and being hypocrites. Surpassing them is the bare minimum. It would sorta be like saying today, "If you want to be a Christian, you have to at least be more righteous than nazis" (obviously an extreme example, but hopefully you get the point). Look out for my future video on Matthew 5:20. Alternatively, you could get my short book, "How Jesus Fulfilled the Law," if you don't want to wait. :) Thanks for the interaction!

The requirements for the gentiles are spelled out in Acts, not sure where you’re getting the medieval dates. Jesus saying you need to be more righteous than the Pharisees is not saying they are not righteous, what he is doing, since he clarifies “you have been told but I say”, is saying that they are not righteous enough, and with the clarification no one is. He is saying in the sermon, you have it backwards, the lowly are not being punished but blessed, the law, which will not go away, is not possible to follow to the level that is required to enter the kingdom of heaven, he is pointing towards the need for grace, through faith, and not to rely on yourself. It doesn’t mean you should not aim to be holy, but you cannot be holy enough. I think you are mistaken, Paul warns us not to fall back into the law, as those under the law are cursed and it only brings death, but to fall into grace where there is life in the Spirit.

Greetings David, this message is sent in love. The heaven and earth passing away is not the physical creation. The Hebrews/Jews called the temple heaven and earth. Their whole cultus, covenant, law, their world is what is passing away. Why? The covenant was broken, irreparable. Fortunately, a new covenant was promised. Isaiah prophesied about the new heavens and earth in chapters 65 & 66; this is where John gets his doctrine for Revelation 21. When Peter talked about the elements melting with fervent heat, he is not talking about the periodic table. Paul defines these elements in Galatians 4. Did heaven and earth pass away? Yes When the temple was torn to the ground, the old covenant ended. Hebrews chapters 8 - 10, make this very clear. Chapter 9 is all about Christ, as the final high priest, fulfilling the final Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, the salvation the New Testament authors told their immediate audiences they would witness, they did, at the revelation of Jesus Christ. your friend

The language of "heaven and earth passing away" is frequently used in Jewish apocalyptic literature, both within and outside the biblical canon, to depict the destruction of the physical creation. We should interpret this imagery consistent with how it is always used elsewhere. What the biblical authors are referencing with this language did not occur in the first century. I recommend the work of Dr. John J. Collins for more on this.

Anyone who has read the bible, every word, every sentence, will understand that heaven and earth is not always talking about the physical creation. Hebrews/Jews wrote the scriptures; they speak metaphorically/hyperbolically and apocalyptically, all the time. The entire bible is written this way, this is their use of language; Dr. Collins needs to read his bible. If you read the bible in a literal lens, it will never make sense, never. Read Isaiah one time, using Dr. Collins thesis. Now count how many times the earth has been destroyed, and mankind, no one is here anymore.......Christ said eat my flesh and drink my blood. A large part of his disciples left that day, because they did not want to be cannibals. Dr. Collins would have been one to walk away, misapplying the meaning of what was said. Ecc 1:4 One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
Read Isaiah 64 - 66 about the prophesy of the new heaven and earth and New Jerusalem. If God destroys his physical creation, that he said was good , that must include his throne, where he sits...... After you read the text, you will find out it is not about the periodic table. Peter said the elements will melt in the fervent heat. What elements? Galatians 4 defines the elements, and once again, it is not of a physical nature. The law is indeed accomplished and the law and prophets indeed fulfilled, that's what he was doing!
Matthew 1:22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
Matthew 2:17, 23 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:
23 And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.
Matthew 3:15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented.
Matthew 4:14 so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
Matthew 5:17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Matthew 8:17 This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.”

Matthew 21:4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,
Matthew 26:54, 56 But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?”
56 But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled.
Matthew 27:9 Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel,
Luke 18:31 Then he took the Twelve aside and told them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. Everything that is written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished.
Luke 24:26-27 Wasn’t it necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and enter into his glory?” [27] Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted for them the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures.

That is not the same thing as Jesus "getting rid of" the sacrificial system. For more on this, see the work on Hebrews from Dr. David Moffitt, Dr. Matthew Thiessen, and Dr. Jesper Svartvik. That is a false distinction. The Bible and other Jewish writings consistently use the phrase “law of God” to denote the law of Moses. See Josh. 24:26; Ezra 7:12, 14, 21, 25; Neh. 8:8, 18; 10:29-30; Psa 36:31; 30:9; Hosea 4:6; Sirach 41:8; Baruch 4:12; 1 Esdras 8:19, 21, 23-24; 3 Macc. 7:10, 12; 2 Esdras 7:20; 4 Macc. 13:22; Josephus, Antiquities 11.121, 124, 130.

If “heaven and earth” have not passed away
If Jesus did not fulfill ALL things
Then WHY are you not keeping the WHOLE law of Moses?
Matthew 5:18 For verily I say unto you,
    👉UNTIL heaven and earth pass,
one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law,
    👉UNTIL all be fulfilled.
Where is your Temple? Your sacrifices? Your Levitical priests? Your feast days? Your sabbaths? Are you still stoning people?
I think you better study the Hebraic language. The Apostles KNEW “heaven and earth” represented COVENANT and their TEMPLE was patterned after “heaven and earth”. The Old heaven and earth Covenant PASSED when Jesus fulfilled all things as He promised… the TEMPLE, the city, the rebellious nation, and their authority were destroyed and MADE NEW!
✝️🕊️👑💍🌳💦All things were made NEW 2000 years ago through THE FINISHED WORK of Jesus, the Christ! The Kingdom of God was taken from the rebellious nation of Israel/Judah and given to a NEW NATION of SPIRITUAL PEOPLE of whom Jesus is the FIRSTBORN!
Matthew 21:43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be TAKEN from you , and GIVEN to a NATION bringing forth the fruits thereof.
Col. 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the FIRSTBORN of every creature:
The kingdom of God came with POWER and SOME were ALIVE at the Coming:
Mark 9:1 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God COME WITH POWER.
All things were made NEW through Jesus, the Christ. God said so!
REV. 21:5 And He that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make ALL THINGS NEW. And He said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
    NEW HEAVEN AND EARTH:
Revelation 21:1 And I saw a NEW heaven and a NEW earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
    NEW CITY:
Revelation 21:2 And I John saw the HOLY CITY, NEW JERUSALEM, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
    NEW TEMPLE:
3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the TABERNACLE of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
NEW NATION of people through Jesus, the FIRSTBORN:
2 Cor. 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a NEW CREATURE: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become NEW.
Col. 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the FIRSTBORN of every creature:
Revelation 21:24 And THE NATIONS of them which are SAVED shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their GLORY AND HONOR into it.
    NEW LIFE:
    Rev. 21:
4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be NO MORE DEATH , neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
    Rev 21:6
And he said unto me, IT IS DONE. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the WATER OF LIFE freely.
    NEW LAW:
Hebrews 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people
    Rev 21:27
And there shall in no wise ENTER into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's BOOK OF LIFE.
    NEW AUTHORITY:
Col. 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the FIRSTBORN from the dead; that in all things he might have the PREEMINENCE.
    Rev 21:22
    And I saw
    NO TEMPLE therein:
👉for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple
    of it.👈
    Rev 21:23
And THE CITY had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it:
👉for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.👈
    Rev 22:1
And he shewed me a pure river of WATER OF LIFE , clear as crystal, proceeding
👉out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.👈
NEW SERVANTS who bring glory and honor to Him:
    Rev 22:3
    And there shall be NO MORE CURSE: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it;
👉and his servants shall serve him:👈
4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.
5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light:
    👉and they shall reign
    for ever and ever.👈
    WHOSOEVER WILL may COME!
And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

The imagery of "heaven and earth passing away" is frequently used in Jewish apocalyptic literature, both within and outside the biblical canon, to speak about the destruction of the physical creation and creation of a new world order. We should interpret this imagery consistent with how it is always used elsewhere. What the biblical authors are referencing with this language did not occur in the first century. I recommend the work of Dr. John J. Collins for more on this.

We dishonor Holy LORD God, His Holy Word, His Holy Christ when we deny or ignore prophetic fulfillment.
I recommend Scripture which declares former “ Heaven and Earth” passed away and “new heavens and new Earth” came down. This signified to the HEBREWS that the old Covenant passed away and the New Covenant came down upon the people of the world. His kingdom cannot be observed with human eyes. This was not a literal physical Temple coming out of the sky. And this was not literal heavens and earth passing away. It's symbolic , Hebraic language that Christians should know!
There are more than 300 figures of speech in the scriptures and the Hebrew language was full of idioms, hyperbole, metaphor, similes, and apocalyptic and parabolic language that is NOT literal.
      Isaiah prophesies against Babylon:
“For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.” - Isaiah 13:9-11
      Ezekiel prophesies against Egypt:
“And when I shall put thee [Pharaoh] out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light. All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord God.” - Ezekiel 30:18; 32:7-8
Amos prophesies against Israel about how the Assyrians will destroy them:
“in that day, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight” - Amos 8:9
      Isaiah prophesies against Edom:
“…Hearken, ye people: let the earth hear….All the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll….For my sword shall be bathed in heaven: behold it shall come down upon Edom, and upon the people of my curse, to judgment….For it is the day of the Lords vengeance.” - Isaiah 34:1-8
No stars were harmed in the destruction of Edom. No moons or suns were actually extinguished when Babylon and Egypt got sacked. No heavens were actually rolled into a taco.
The language is figurative, but the destruction is very, very real.
“I will sweep away everything from the face of the earth, declares the Lord…The wicked will have only heaps of rubble when I cut off man from the face of the earth” - Zephaniah 1:2-3
Zephaniah prophesied against Judah prior to the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem in 587 B.C. God did not destroy the entire planet or wipe away everything from the face of the earth, in this event.
When the prophet Joel prophesies against Judah he says this about the armies that will be used to bring the Lord’s judgment:
“The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining…” - Joel 2:4-11
      Jesus said:
“For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now-and never to be equaled again” [in Matt. 24:21]…
The Judgment coming to Israel was greater than ever before.
Malachi warned Israel 430 years prior:
      Malachi 4
1 For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.
3 And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.
4 Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.
5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
That judgment was fulfilled in Revelation ending with this, just as Malachi, Jesus, and the Apostles warned:
Revelation 20:9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and FIRE came down from God out of heaven, and DEVOURED THEM.
ALL THINGS were made NEW through Jesus, the Christ!
      Revelation 21
1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

When Jesus said to love God and neighbor, these were not the only commandments he wanted his people to keep. His point was that love for God and neighbor must be the foundation of our Torah observance (see Matt 22:40). Regarding Gentiles, Jesus told his disciples to make disciples of "all nations" and to "teach them to observe all that I commanded you" (Matt 28:19-20). Jesus's teachings were to be passed on to the Gentiles, and the Gentiles were to be instructed to obey Jesus's teachings. This would include the sermon on the mount, in which Jesus declares the ongoing authority of the Law of Moses and urges his followers to obey it (see the video you are commenting on).
      Hope that helps!

Why was Peter’s direction to the Gentiles to abstain from “partaking in things offered to idols, sexual impurity, eating anything strangled, and drinking blood? For from ancient generations [the writings of] Moses has been preached in every city, since his words are read [aloud] every Sabbath in the synagogues.” Acts 15:19-21 AMP
Obviously, these are starting points. The point is Gentiles do not automatically know what to do, as evidenced by some evil Crusades. If God wants us to stick with basics, then why the encouragement to grow? Why change the Sabbath day?
Paul’s writings are hard to understand. Ultimately, Peter is the leader of Gentiles and the Elderly Council, not Paul. I err on the side of Messiah though, when He says “…no man is good, except the Father.”
“For it is not those who merely hear the Law [as it is read aloud] who are just or righteous before God, but it is those who [actually] obey the Law who will be justified [pronounced free of the guilt of sin and declared acceptable to Him].”
      ‭‭Romans‬ ‭2‬:‭13‬ ‭AMP‬‬

The Greek word for under in the phrase under the law and the singular Greek word that's used to translate the phrase under the law when referring to the law of Christ are two different words as well which have two different meanings. The word that's used for the first is linked to authority, which the law no longer has authority to put the believer to death because we have already died. The word that's used to describe how we're under the law of Christ is linked to obedience.

Jesus paid our debt. does not mean the law has been erased.
For example, I get a ticket for speeding. And someone else pays the fine for me. The speed limit and the law are still in effect, but I did not pay the fine, someone graciously paid it for me. How would anyone since his death and resurrection know they are sinners in need of a savior if there were no law. You want to please your father, so you do as he instructs. does not equal salvation. Acknowledging the law is not a bad thing. How many of our city, state, country laws are founded straight from God's laws. In all my years (more than 55) growing up in the church this has never been such a dividing issue.

The "law of Christ" found in Galatians 6:2 is in direct relation to John 13:34 to love one another, this isn't some new thing, it comes from Leviticus 19:18 which Paul also references in Galatians 5:14, so really the law of Christ is directly related to the law of Moses which is actually God's law, I would go study what being "under the law" really means.
