  • This 4-minute video features "Spider-Man: Miles Morales" on the PS5, streamed through cloud gaming. In a significant improvement from last year's video where I did such an attempt but with 7-second iterations/aggregated data, I've implemented real-time network monitoring and port sniffing for enhanced analysis.
My absence in the past days was due to dedicating time to this project, aiming to bring you more thorough gaming insights.
I'm looking for your suggestions on which games to cover in this format, suggestions on game comparisons between Xbox and PlayStation cloud services are also welcome. While expanding to more cloud streaming services is on the horizon, I'm currently focusing on these platforms due to cost considerations.

When I saw the title of the video, for a moment I thought you were testing streaming to the PS Portal XD. Great video in any case, it's nice to see those data bandwidth and consumption stats. Also, no EU servers? Is game data streamed from USA servers only? And what's your general opinion on image / sound quality and responsiveness?

I don't own a Portal but would have been nice also, that is information that I could actually acquire as this method could be used. This was just a video to showcase of the (semi-)finished effort, I want to do a comparison. The weird part is that for Xbox I'm streaming directly from a server closely (I live at 30km away from AMS-IX here in the Netherlands). Results have been pretty much not what I expected, lower bit-rate and higher input latency with Xbox Cloud than PS Plus.Edit: I only tested this one for the method but it was rock solid. Sound was good and of course it does look a bit soft but very decent. My recordings are always lossless (video+audio) and quality exported so this video, even though YT butchers it a bit, is a good representation.

@@ajgamingcomparisons wow, didn't expect it to perform better than Game Pass streaming, specially with no EU servers. Maybe all those years of experience with PS Now really pushed Sony to do their homework and optimize their streaming tech? Regarding image quality, it looks good on the video, so based on your response, I'm guessing it will be fine for anyone who is already fine with the usual movie streaming image quality. I have a shitty internet connection and also prefer physical copies, so I'm clearly not their target audience in any case.

Same here, I wasn't that expecting at all. Spoiler= Xbox has about 50% less bitrate/bandwidth usage. Also with Xbox I've seen, just this last two days, waiting queues up to 15 minutes which is pretty crazy for a paid service - didn't experience it once with PS. Xbox does have better marketing, however before I make my conclusion I will do an additional follow up video where I compare bandwidth and video quality of 2-3 games that are available on both platforms. Do need to research which titles though. Because I live close to Amsterdam (Randstad) we have pretty decent internet connection, I'm on cable with a 1000/100 connection. Q2 2024 we are getting fibre, when it comes I could choose up to 4000/4000.

@@ajgamingcomparisons a 15 minute wait, unless it's an extreme outlier situation, seems unacceptable to me as well. Since GamePass is such a great value, I'm guessing it's no surprise they could find it hard to keep up with the demand. I'm still not sure Spencer was honest when he said the service was already sustainable. Streaming movies or music is easier to manage and scale, specially over time, since new technologies that require hardware upgrades in those fields are rare. But with games, if you want to keep your promise of providing top tier quality, you have to constantly check for hardware upgrades, while also making sure you don't break compatibility with older games. Sony will also have a hard time once their racks of PS3s used for streaming start dying and they still don't have proper emulation for that platform. Though I see the convenience and value of game streaming, I'm still very skeptical of its implementation and scalability as a mainstream gaming platform, specially after the Stadia debacle.

The problem they have with scaling is, it is special hardware. Movie streaming services just spin up additional vm’s/containers and scale on whatever hyperscaler they are running, it is pretty much how all the known streaming and social media platforms are built- scale ondemand. I think for example that the PS Portal would be great value IF you could stream directly from PS network and not just your PS5. Cloud gaming isn’t there yet, but I do believe there is added value for those with great connections. I often hear “yes but without internet you cannot stream”, well most games are becoming “always online” so even if you have the game on your physical drive installed it’s going to be a no go. I don’t believe it neither, they have many years to go before that happens (being sustainable). Stadia, with Google being Google, I truly never believed it would last longer than 1-2 years from the start.

If you mean games that are available on both streaming services, then yes that is exactly what my next video will be. Or did you mean something else?

@@ajgamingcomparisons yes, I meant the same cloud game on Xbox vs PS. Where is better streaming, less ping etc.

Will come in a few days/next week, ironing out some workflow stuff to include FPS in the mix.
