  • Hola mi gente, soy Gadiel Del Orbe, from BuzzFeed's Pero Like I want to New York University. I was invited to speak in a panel for their 12th National Dominican Student Conference. I was quickly interrupted by Armando Guareno claiming reverse racism.

To say that you feel discriminated as a European in DR is mind boggling. The only reason the topic of "blackness" is brought up so much in the panel 8s because Dominicans don't like to acknowledge their blackness, despite being 80% African. It's this generation that's putting a stamp on being Afro Latino. To say I'm European Hispanic and not represented is ludacris because that's is the only thing that is represented.

I’m so glad you set him straight. It’s beautiful to see Afro Latinos embrace their beauty and power. I’m from a Veracruz, Mexico and there are people of African descent which I love, and it is painful to see our own discriminating against each other. I recently did an ancestry dna test and was so much happier to see my little 4% of sub Saharan African DNA and my native DNA, than the 52% European DNA, as it is a reminder of the pain our people went through. I don’t understand people who try so hard to distance themselves from the beauty of our heritage, and I pray that people with a platform speaking out will make a positive change in our communities. Gracias hermano ♥️.

I'm half Puerto Rican and Dominican but i have really pale skin but curly hair. I've been to DR like 3 times and where my mom grew up in Santo Domingo, it's very poor and there's lots of black Dominicans and boy did I feel the eyes on me lol. In the streets, restaurants, supermarkets, public transportation. I didn't feel any jealousy though because lots of Dominicans tend to "worship" los estranjeros which is me being from the US and being half boricua so I got kinda "praised" and it was obvious how differently many of them treated me and the way they treated the darker skin Dominicans. Shit's wild man lol.

    10.1% black
    0.1% asian
72.9% are actually mixed Europeans and Blacks, you Gadiel are clearly one, your mom looks pretty light skinned to me, I personally don't know if I have african in my blood because both my parents are white, and their parents as well, but the 80% figure is inaccurate, being 50/50 doesn't make you a black, it makes you a mestizo, and in DR only 10.1% is fully black.. the rest is either mestizo or white, and 0.1% Chinese.

So let me be the devils advocate here and ask the question. Granted that yes, the europeans and spaniards specifically are responsible for many inexcusable atrocities, does that fully mean one can't be proud to have ancestry from there? I get where he was going with it, he felt that the dominican panels focused too much on the blackness when there's other parts too. While the 80% of the dominicans are black, theres still that 20 percent that was left to feel marginalized. Hispanics as a whole say we feel underrepresented and left out all the time, how there's very little representation of us in the mainstream media, yet, when he says he feels left out of dominican representation, we flip the script on him. I can almost see where he's coming from.

You have a point, but I see it like this (I'm not Dominican, so this is an outsider's view. I'm Ecuadorian). Latinos who look white doesn't need the empowerment. Yes you can say "I don't feel represented" but the thing is that it goes farther than that. You have a lot of media and history that show how proud you should feel of being white. We don't (I have African roots). We have always been told that our color is less and our hair is messy. So, generations need people in the media claiming how it is okay to be black and have curly "messy" hair.
I get your point, but I don't think it's something to feel bad about. You have had a lot of representation during the history of our countries, let us have the empowerment. It's not like we are denying your nationality or whatever :)

Madda Córdova we've had Ricky from I Love Lucy and Marc Anthony. I take it that people might be under the assumption that just because we're light skin hispanics that we can identify with generic white people. Its not the same, it's not the same features, nor culture and no light skin hispanics look at Eminem, nor Seth Rogan, nor Brad Pitt and think, "hey, that guy is just like me." Theres also many latinos who look, for lack of better word, like latinos. Olive skin, dark features, and dont look so black nor white. As latinos, we fall under too wide of a spectrum, and a very miniscule part of that would even resemble what Hollywood has to offer, even our whiter people. Plus, I doubt many people from DR are watching tv thinking "wow, Lil Yachty/50 Cent/Jay-Z (i almost said Drake, but Drake look mad dominican lol) is exactly like me."

Ghostface Chilla okay, but still. You mentioned Marc Anthony, and like him are a lot of other Latinos with lighter skin in the media (Mario Lopez, Shakira, Sofía Vergara, Lin Manuel Miranda, Luis Fonsi, Camila Cabello, Jennifer López, Gael García Bernal, etc). And again, more than representation it's about the message that our heritage is something we should be proud of. I'm proud of being white just as I'm proud of being black, I'm proud of coming from everywhere and still have a nationality and a very specific culture. And that last parts are what have been missing during history. I get that you may feel a little left out, but what I meant with you having media and history is just that. You just have to look around to find people like you, African-Latin American people don't have that due to decades of racial issues. So we need activists to explain how it's okay to be darker. We need it because we have it attached to the back of our brains that being darker is being less than.
Again, I get your point (we are not screaming how proud we are of being part-European) but having in mind our history, it's not necessary. We have to balance the importance we give to our heritage. Also if you are Latino, you may have black or at least some indigenous heritage, the fact that you don't look like them doesn't mean that you are not a part of them as well (imo, that's the beauty of our people's hues).

You cannot be serious! When you look at Univision, at Telemundo, at People en Español, at Music videos , and almost every other form of Latino medio 95% of the faces presented are people of predominantly European descent. What films or television shows feature Latinos of African , Indigenous, or Asian ancestry? Name one! Univision and Telemundo have show hosts who are from Spain. Telemundo does not have even one host ‘con piel canela o más oscura’ on any of their shows.

Is it not your human duty to be compassionate towards those who feel discriminated, and help them find their power, as you have, whether you think they are discriminated against or not?

I kind of feel like you just proved his point. There is discrimination against African-Americans, but that doesn’t mean that the Europeans can’t discriminated against as well.
