    Arnold has looked after Franco handsomely,he's been in some of Arnold's films mainly as an extra and I think it's beautiful that Arnold never forgot Franco when he became so famous,a true legend in every sense.

      He's also put Franco in his place many times. Gregg Valentino has told stories about Arnold teasing Franco loudly at Golds. Arnold is a VERY competitive guy, even even if he loves you he'll still shit on you from time to time.

    No bodybuilder today could blow a water bottle up and pop it. The core and lung strength was insane. I still stand by my belief Franco was and still is pound for pound the strongest bodybuilder ever.

      True about the modern guys, but it is widely accepted that Franco concealed a small blade to pop those things. Even so, the extent to which he expanded them was NUTS.

      Actually as you blow it up it stretches and gets weaker. Getting it started is the hard part. No need to cut it.

      @@senatus really because I saw him do it in his 60s with no knife. He was still strong. He has massive bones for his size as well. Thats part of the reason his limbs didnt look as impressive. Huge bones.

    I always feared the day one of my heroes Sly or Arnold would die. Never realized Franco would hit me out of nowhere. I have pictures of him up in my Garage Gym. I loved his work ethic and freak strength, how innocently funny he was with his accent etc in footage with Arnold. He lived a great life, lets take joy in that fact. What a sad day.

      @@philsburydoboy the video is available here on RUclips. He was racing against Bob Young, football player for the Cardinals and he was only 8-10 seconds out when it happened. Brent Musberger even interviewed while he was lying on the ground and at that time Franco thought it was just a minor thing, but as we know he required and had major surgery.

    Yes, I agree. Franco pound for pound is the strongest bodybuilder of all time! he and Arnold were my inspiration when I started boxing in 78 and incorporated bodybuilding into my training.

      Yep. True lifelong friends. But, as great and famous as Arnold was/is, Franco never got his full due, IMO. And pound-for-pound, Franco may have been the strongest human ever. Imagine weighing just 185 lbs and benching 525 lbs (at 21 I was 185 and felt strong lifting 315 lol)?! He would blow up hot-water bottles until they exploded, bend 1/2" steel rods, just a physical freak.

    I just got to know that Franco is no more. A true legend, I mean he wasn't a big guy but boy was he strong and humble. RIP. Will always be remembered as one of the strongest bodybuilders who ever competed.

    Funny thing is Franco’s strength is not a myth. Guy was like 5’5” and 180 lbs and doing feats of strength that are still remarkable today. World record deadlift. Benching 525, etc.

His Olympic recorxs are;Olympic Press:348 lbs.,snatch:312 lbs.,clean and jerk:400 lbs.

      Yes he hung upside down by his feet. He never held any powerlifting world records, nor national powerlifting records. He was extremely strong. He broke his leg within the first few steps of the refrigerator run. Very strong yes, world records no.

    As a boy growing up and putting in work with the concrete weights, I had Arnold and Franco's pictures all over my bedroom wall. These pics inspired me to continue my own journey to become a body builder just like them. What a role model those two were for me. RIP Franco, you will be missed tremendously.

    Back in the 80's I bumped into Franco on the streets of NYC. I walked up to him even though he never saw me before in his life. He hugged me like a long lost friend and we chatted for about then minutes. A wondeful human being, very warm, very outgoing. RIP

    My dad told me the same story as a kid about Franco blowing up the hot water bottle. Incredible lung power. My father was a bodybuilder and worked out at the same YMCA in Chicago as Franco and arnold in the 60's, back when Arnold was in the construction business. Sergio Oliva also frequented that YMCA.

    I remember that refrigerator race. Franco picked up the fridge and ran with it. All the other bigger strong men were traveling at a much slower pace. When his knee cap twisted around his leg, Franco was in lots of pain. He was a freak of nature. Super strong.
    Arnold also mentioned 'Marvin Eder' the teenage superman... Look him up. RIP Franco...

    Franco, in my opinion, was one of the strongest ever pound for pound. Doing a 750 lb deadlift at a bodyweight of ~ 200 lbs with no lifting straps and no belt is superhuman.
