Thank you for sharing your technique on heavy rust weathering on the bed! I’m definitely going to try this! Realistic weathering effects bring character to the build! Franco.
I’m trying regular “gorilla glue” and chipping it away to get a chipped and bubbly flaking effect. Gorilla glue expands and bubbles but drys hard and can be flaked off leaving a bread-like texture with lots of holes, yet a strong resin structure. I’m Using this step right after the dremeling just before the rust coloring.
Update: it worked. Also worked really well for exposed seat foam on my micro Toyota seats. Shipping away the shiny layer in holes seems to have the best effect. Doesn’t really work good on flat surfaces. Better in holes.
@@TandemCTelevision Thanks for that I really appreciate the reply. Funny enough I bought some paints from Micheals out of their clearance section about a year ago and last night I was going through some paints and low and behold I had the Light Rust and the Light Moss so I opened them up and give them a good stir and they were just fine. I found the Dark Rust and Dark Moss on Amazon Canada after some searching. Blessings Pastor Randy Bourque
Very similar to how I've done Rust.... But I really like that last step!! 😎😉 The real Rust soaked Vinegar, adds that perfect patina that really makes it POP! I gotta remember that tip. Carmine 🚂🚙
@@TandemCTelevision I wasn’t trying to be rude. I think I’m going to use your technique and try to make my Mojave body look like the bed is rusting away from under the flare
This was awesome to watch really liked the turn out. Would've liked to see the panel on the truck after though. Other then that this was and is incredible. Would this technique work with Lexan?😎👍👍
Thanks Jahmen, the painting techniques should work on the outside of Lexan. Using the Dremel on Lexan can also be effective but not as dynamic as on a plastic hard body.
The hairspray is what allows the paint to chip. They are chipping mediums that companies like Vallejo make, but hairspray is cheaper and usually laying around the house.
How to best seal the vinegar/steelwool true rust? As from what I understand it also easily washes away with water, which would be a bit of an issue when you would drive through mud or waterpools. Just clearcoat wouldn’t do it I think as that would probably turn it glossy and take away from the realism.
I use a matte clear to seal it. A really cool method is to matte clear the entire panel/body and use the hairspray or salt method under a clear coat. What I mean is 1. create the rusty panel/body 2. matte clear it 3. use hairspray/salt 4. spray gloss over hairspray/salt 5. chip gloss away in a weathered pattern. Everything is sealed and makes for a really nice weathered effect. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I'm currently building a new studio I'll be filming from. I should be finished in the next few months and then I plan to film more videos like this one plus others.
The salt method is another way of creating a chipped paint look. Basically you use salt as a masking material, there are many good video tutorials. I like hairspray because it's a bit more controllable.

Yes you do!
That is the most realistic rust I have ever seen on an RC vehicle!!!!
I use the steel wool / vinegar liquid rust concoction. I call it dumpster juice. Good stuff.
Great technique, so natural look. Vinegar and steel wool tip noted. Thanks for sharing, man. 🖖

Can you tell me where you bought the Plaid Rust Weathering paint set from.
Hi Randy, I think I got it at Hobby Lobby or one of the big box stores. You can also find it on Amazon, search under Folkart Painted Rust Effect.

Nice work bud some good tips. I all so do a dry brushing over the high parts over the rust to help it pop.

Can i do this with spray paint for plastic instead of using air brush? @TandemCTelevision
You should be able to, you just wont have the same control as an airbrush. Take your time and you should be able to get the same effect.
Amazingly realistic, i have to try this

Hey i was curious if it would be possible to make a polycarbonate have a smokey effect? its clear polycarbonate
Yes, Tamiya makes a Smoke spray for poly, Tamiya PS-31, but takes a very steady hand to get the effect right.
