I'm glad you said you want to lick it because that's all I think about when I see good weathering effects. I'm gonna make up a big batch of these for the trick-or-treaters on Halloween.
Audience: Hey, Bill? How do I paint stuff to look like rust? Bill: Use rust colored paints. This is the hard hitting crafter knowledge that keeps me coming back.
These kinds of tips are useful across the board. I can see myself using them on miniatures, terrain, sculptures, the neighbor's car. The possibilities are endless, really.
Was looking for a quick tutorial on how to paint rust and was pleasantly surprised to discover this gem of a channel. Not only was this video helpful, it was also entertaining!
He's a rusty boy, in the rusty world Rust is drastic, it's fantastic You can sponge on the wear, rust gets everywhere Imagination, rust is your creation Come on, Rustie, let's get dusty.
your textured paint rust is phenomenal. It really suggests rust that's bubbled under the paint to begin with. Excellent stuff Bill. Thank you for your effort to teach the rest of us.
Very instructional and very entertaining, without the shouty, shouty stuff you get on many other channels (typically those from the yew ess of ay). I'll be checking out your other episodes. Thanks heaps Bill.
As someone who still fears weathering and dirtying up their props: I can't wait to use these techniques in three years when I finally get over myself lol
I've always started things off afraid. Prop making, 3D printing, portraits, etc, but every time, it's thanks to these that i managed to get over it and give it a spin. Much appreciated
In mathematics and computer science, an algorithm (/ˈælɡərɪðəm/ (audio speaker iconlisten)) is a finite sequence of well-defined instructions, typically used to solve a class of specific problems or to perform a computation.[1] Algorithms are used as specifications for performing calculations and data processing. By making use of Artificial Intelligence, algorithms can perform automated deductions (referred to as automated reasoning) and use mathematical and logical tests to divert the code through various routes (referred to as automated decision-making). Using human characteristics as descriptors of machines in metaphorical ways was already practiced by Alan Turing with terms such as "memory", "search" and "stimulus".[2], bill.
Yep, you're an ARTIST and if you didn't know it already, here you go!!!!!!!!!!! Your funny way of explaining makes your videos enjoyable to watch, and I subscribed right away. You can also use ground coffee or anything for texture, like corn floor, all you need is imagination, and you can make anything. Great work!!!!!!!!!!
This might be my favorite miniature channel ! Funny, great tutorials with simple and effective techniques that I will actually use, creative editing. Fantastic work!
Great video, really helpful in finding the right kind of method. Personally, it's all about experimentation and finding the right technique you're happy and skilled with. I've made my own powders, tints and paint techniques - it's like a form of alchemy and I love it!
Yeah, excellent metal decay right there! I believe that for the toothbrush part of the salt method it works better if the brush is moist. Also worthy of mention is the sponge method, basically the paint method but using a sponge to apply the rusty colors, looks more random and "natural" Edit: Fixed the overabundance of "sponge", clearly needed more coffee :P
Wow, these are really good techniques. I've seen some of them used before, but it was cool to see them used all at once on the last sheet. Good job Bill and thanks for another great video.
@@BillMakingStuff I also have to say I always get a kick out of your humor in these videos. You've really done an excellent job at combining informative content with comedy. Keep up the good work. :)
Top 3 effects are the best representations of rust. You got rust with paint flaking, heavy surface rust, and rust if it were polished with a wire wheel.
Whats nice is that each technique give the rust a different flavor (coming from an amateur rust taster). The "just paint" give an indoor rust where its not exposed to elements, but metal has a thin rust. The textured paint is like a rusted hull of something found by the sea. While the powders give a rusty look you'd find the desert. Wonderful stuff.
I cant easily get soft pastels, but what I can get are dollar store spices. Cinnamon, chilli powder, nutmeg, baking cocoa, etc. They work fine for rust, dirt, n dust. O.o
You know I did actually watch this when you put it out and didn't have anything interesting to say, but since you said it didn't get enough love... Your rust is second to none Bill, don't let anyone make you think any different!
Great ideas, but Here in Australia a company has made it easy to make the pastels into powder, the tool is in a rectangle shape with a piece of mesh that is in the middle and you rub the pastel on the mesh and you get a lovely powder weathering powder and you use a bonding medium and you got your rust or earth, and build up snow and ice. cheers.

This is seriously a lifesaver, I’ve been looking for somewhat easy way to get a rusty effect for 20 lil shipping containers and this video was perfect! Thanks Bill!!
I also like using cinnamon with PVA glue. Your models smell tasty afterwards. A DIY mortar and pestle option I always like uses an ice cream scoop and a ceramic cereal bowl.
Just had a go on making a rusty tester panel using your textured paint and masking technique! I cried with joy at the outcome! Baking powder is becoming a favourite component in my crafting box! Thanks Bill!
Came to see the rust, but was not rushed. The powders were pushed until we were bushed. The fluid was masked without being asked. Cracking effects all...well, I guess chipped and rusted, really. All in all I rate this 10/10, would rust again. Cheers!
I know of another way. The hairspray technique. Paint rust -> spray one or two layers of regular hair spray -> paint top coat -> wet surface with water -> the water dissolves the hairspray and you can chip the top coat off. Bonus tip: You can use marmite( yes, marmite) instead of masking fluid. Seems crazy bit since it does'nt contain fat it does'nt leave any stains.
Very nifty tutorial good sir, two for the price of one! I have heard about all five methods you covered, but never had considered combining them on the same piece...😱 I have seen many creators that applied the rust as a base, then the "old" paint on top with the rust showing through. I had always thought that it would look better to have the piece painted first then apply the rust, such as with the textured paint method on top. I guess it is all subjective and down to the user's skill/ability. I will have to experiment with these and see which method I can do better for a better result. Thanks very much for the info as well as the entertainment. Great stuff, thanks for sharing, and keep on keeping on!!

Paint or school glue, sprinkle on flour, let dry, tap the back to knock off any loose flour, paint over it.Makes a great rust!

Love how the making fluid made it look like the rust ate away paint and metal. All methods were fine, but the masking fluid was shockingly good.

Yeah but it usually makes anything look better so don't worry
only one year left to go until you can try out these techniques 🤞
@SuperVoodude it's been 3 years now, have you tried it?
I've always started things off afraid. Prop making, 3D printing, portraits, etc, but every time, it's thanks to these that i managed to get over it and give it a spin. Much appreciated
Cornstarch (Corn Flour) makes a good filler for a texture paint as well.
Ill try it

Gotta say, your self-deprecating narration is pretty soothing.
Thanks.
the salt method was used by the armor modelers years ago I saw it in Fine Scale modeler its great seeing things being shared across hobbies like that
Hobby grade Rc's also, just about all of these.
So amazing.
I can almost feel the weight of the metal.

Love your commentary Bill. Thanks for sharing your creativity, great ideas, one and all.

The rock salt with some crushed up pieces works real well. But yea, more for an airbrush.
There are also metal effects paint with iron in them that you spray a rust activator on and it makes real rust
Great tutorial Bill how to make plastic stuff look rusty ....
