So have I!!! I was a mere 8 years of age when I caught the Disco fever so to speak lol Donna Summer was all anyone could talk about at the time, and rightfully so! I remember my eldest brother bringing her: "I Feel Love" album home, and how much (as a young girl), my sisters and I wanted to be like her! Not sure if you guys have done "Heaven Knows" with Brooklyn Dreams yet, but it is equally as awesome! 🥰

Interesting 9-11 connection on her cancer. They say she was so moved by the tragedy in 2001 that she stayed in her apartment close to ground zero for months. Breathing in what we now know was toxic air. Like the bulk of first responders she got cancer in the years following. So sad.

Yes we used to call into the radio station to request our favourites song. We used to buy our favourite 45s (singles) at the record store. This was Donna's 8th single in a row that sold over a million copies or more (which was a physical sales record). She reached 9. Hot Stuff and Bad Girls sold over 2 million.

If I remember correctly, back in 1978 or '79, she had Hot Stuff and Bad Girls at #1 and #2 on the top 40 at the same time (at least in the top 5 for sure). I heard it on Casey Kasem when there was a week that all of the top 5 were by female vocalists (don't ask me to remember who) and 2 of them were Donna Summer's songs.

She was the queen of songs that started slow and BAM hit that disco beat. That album - one of the first 4 or 5 I owned - is chock full of hits. She seemed to me like she sang the different songs as different characters, and she was a HUGE big deal at the time to me and to radio. Not pureley Disco/Dance, but a lot of Disco/Dance in her catalog. Along with Pop, Rock, Ballads, R&B, Contemporary Christian etc. I actually don't consider this song Disco. I consider it an upbeat Pop song. However, because she's been dubbed the Queen Of Disco, any upbeat song she does, some people call it Disco. Although, some would argue that Disco is Pop music. After all, Pop is short for popular (or what is popular musically) and Disco was popular at one point. Still is to a degree.

I believe this song to be about her hearing a song on the radio that even though it didnt mention his name was a song about her, how she felt and her lover getting back together. Then of course this very song she is singing becomes that SONG to others. Its about how music can bring us together. My interpretation. Donna really got to show out in her duet with Barbra Streisand (I believe you did it) since Streisand was THE singer of the era. And Donna sure held her own with Barbra. Perhaps even surpassed her vocally.

In the 90's, MTV did a show on the 50 greatest women rockers of all time. The top 4 were Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, and then Donna Summer. When they started her segment, they introduced her as "The only superstar that disco ever produced".

  • @kev7161

She had several songs where she starts slow and then segues into the disco beat: On the Radio, Dim All the Lights, Enough is Enough/No More Tears . . . . a couple more I'm sure. It was nice to slow dance for a minute and then break out into your disco moves later on.
We used to call in to request songs, play in competitions, answer surveys, etc. It was always a kick to hear your own voice a few minutes later. I remember requesting songs as a teen and young adult a LOT!

Donna started the technique of starting a song as a ballad, and then changing the BPM to a dance song. She perfected it. She was just an amazing singer, songwriter and also a painter. No voice will ever match hers. This version is a radio edit. The album version slows down again and then speeds up one more time.

Donna really found her footing when she released Last Dance (which won her the Oscar for Best Original Song from a film ((Thank God it's Friday)), from there on she started most of her released singles with a slow intro--Enough is Enough (No More Tears; Mac Arthur's Park, and On the Radio--that melded directly into the disco beat. This style was featured on her record release of 3 double albums in a row.

In Southern California we’d call the late great Art LaBoe and dedicate love songs to our loved ones and special crushes! It definitely was a thing back then. Donna Summer is truly a disco icon. So beautiful with a phenomenal voice! Queen of the genre, but much, much more. RIP

Amber you are correct, the radio thing was the norm. It started with advice columns in the newspaper, then moved on over to radio as well. Some shows were fully dedicated to advice. You tend to find it in different forms, some better than others. It made its way to tv, most forms of that wasn’t good. I see people asking social media people that they respect, for advice as well. And Rob, I started laughing when you made the reference about it not going to be a song to dance to. Donna had a surprise in store for you.💃🏽🕺🏾

You were literally saying it as I was typing it. Middle school crush. They call her queen of disco, but she sang a lot of rock n roll, by choice, inspired by Tina turner. Donna was on the Casablaca label with Kiss. Good buddies with Paul Stanley. Cut her teeth playing and recording in Germany. The sad reality? She wore wigs and, how would I say, garments that slimed you down extensively. They used to mess with her circulation.

IMO Donna is one of the 5 best female singers in my lifetime (I’m 57) but unfortunately she got stuck with that ‘queen of disco’ label when she was capable of singing any genre and career was never quite the same after the disco craze which is unfortunate. She was a massive star with numerous hits between 76-84 and had a great voice right up until her shocking passing at only 63. She totally hid her condition and nobody knew she’d been ill.
