    I did this y pain of a job in my 06 quest about 3 years ago twice!! First time I wanted to save money and bought parts from eBay, it cost about $300 for the whole kit but the tensioner only lasted 6,000 . Miles what a pain. Then I went to buy parts from dealer and spend about $120 on two guides and main tensioner and it's been running good since then, firt time I took engine out and had to remove the whole front end!! Ohh yes, second time I did it only removed timing cover which it's hard because when putting it back together you have to be extra careful with the timing cover since they don't make gaskets for it you have to use silicone and it gets nasty. Good Luck to all of you doing this job.

    I went straight to the dealer and asked for the timing belt tensioner guide. I would recommend dealer parts since there are people posting that they are having a repeated problem... I used dealer parts and everything is still going strong after 25,000 miles.

  • @arturomartinez167

    I think I spent $300 total in parts and included all the chains, tensioner, tensioner guide, secondary chain tensioner clips, water pump, serpentine belt, spark plugs and random little things like new motor oil and engine coolant. Almost all parts where from dealer. I don't know what a dealer would charge but I would guess about $1500 and up for chain alone and additional charges for water pump, plugs... A backyard mechanic $300-800 labor depending on their experience(get someone experienced)!

    Your videos ae great and have been very educational for me. I am basically a novice when it comes to engine repair but am somewhat mechanically inclined. I saw where you said that the work can be done with the motor still in the vehicle, but can someone who does not normally work on cars replace the tensioner and guide themself, or would you not recommend this? And last question, just to confirm how little I know, when you take off the cover to the timing chain, will any oil spill out.

  • @arturomartinez167
    @arturomartinez167 11 лет назад +1

    Yes, the car had lots of issues since I purchased it in this condition... I knew I had to replace all the motor mounts and transmission mount and also wanted to replace the spark plugs which cannot be done without removing the intake to access the plugs. On the Quest the intake lies underneath the cowl and the intake cannot be removed without either dropping the motor or removing...

    Great video. Thought I might have to change secondary chain but realised because I am hearing a whine in the engine.
    You pulled the engine out so where did you attach your chains. The manual shows one place, the transmission housing. My question is where and what size bolt did you use on the transmission.

    I just had my 3.5 replaced with a 80k mile version. When I picked it up it seemed great but the next morning the check engine light was on and the code was a idle sensor. Will replacing the sensor fix the issue or could the issue be a problem with the new motor and even if put the sensor in it would blow it again?

    It took me a while since I was in school(college) and working fulltime. I would work on it after work/class but really just on weekends mostly alone... total time 2 weeks. Total hours for me was about 24 hours and with air tools. On a mechanically inclined/experienced level from 1-10 (novice-expert) I would rate myself a 5 but on a "pays attention to details" scale I would rate myself at 9. Things can go wrong pretty fast...

    i had the same problem with my 2004 Quest. I wouls start up and hear the noise, but once the car warmed up the noise would go away. I have since fixed that. Now i'm hearing the noise again but it stay with me while im driving. Could this be one of the other chains going bad because the first chain incident like i said the noise would go away. Before i got the chain fixed i asked a manager at a dealership what the problem could be and he said that noise stays. i told him no because it went away.

      There are three timing chains in this vintage of 3.5l v6 motor. You can change the tensioner in the main chain, but it won't do anything for the two cam chains, those are the ones with plastic shoes that wear out and rattle. It can cause failure at some point, may go a while, but could fail if chain jumps.

    I don't know. Something that might help is use a hose and listen through the hose as you point the hose at different locations around the motor. The noise can come from many places and components. Best thing to do is take it to a trusted shop. Sometimes they can diagnose for no fee.

      Water wont go into the oil on a 3.5. It has 2 seals and a weap hole to let it leak out of the block instead of the oil. Also dont have to pull the engine to even the timing cover to replacement. Theres a little cover that is easily removable to change it. If you hate it just be thankful you dont have a chrysler 2.7 where both of those things i just mentioned at the opposite...

      One advantage with a chain is you don’t need to apply a lot of sideload in order to maintain tension. With a belt you have to apply on considerable mount of load which tends to accelerate bearing wear

    Dont listen to this one part "just replace tensioner and guide" WRONG REPLACE IT. TO CHANGE THESE CHAINS IN MOST CARS THIS CAN BE IN IS A NIGHTMARE. DO IT RIGHT 1X U WONT EVER DO IT AGAIN.
