Great message and positivity. The few times I've fished with tournament guys I just try to be a listening sponge. Take in the information that's been given, visually survey how I can best place my casts in the zone and work with what is available. We've fished 3 guys and a guide out of a 19 foot boat, 3 guys in a 14 foot Jon boat on the river and work it like you've laid out. The river guide buddy has been taking us out for almost 30 years and he does fine in the back seat most every time. We are more interested in his presentation than who's fishing what water. Kid is years ahead on maturity

Such an awesome point about the angle of the cast. I fish with two buddies recreationally. Two of us basically alternate cast up front and the third casts off the back. It’s remarkable how many fish get picked up from the back. You’re getting the same angle to the bank from the opposite direction. I find that you often get a slightly longer cast and retrieve because the boat is moving in the other direction. Grats to your co-angler. Imagine how board he’d have been watching you stare at a graph all day. lol

    Good story!
You're exactly right, I fish with a buddy and he's usually the one up front. He's a better fisherman than me, but I do fine out the back of the boat. Never felt I'm at a disadvantage being in the back.

As a new bass fisherman with less than a year of doing it I’ve yet to fish from a boat or in a tournament. It would be fantastic to fish from the back of a bass boat and try that as a challenge. I’ve also picked up on the fact that bass seem to like when baits/cadence/cover are just a little different than normal. I’d like to think they know when a boat has just gone by in shallow water and are likely not expecting lures to be trailing behind.

Randy, this is another one of your videos that I agree with you on. I have fished has a co and if the pro would say what you did about turning the boat around to give me a chance to get my bait back, I would agree with and do what you said every time. The biggest problem I have seen is that some pro don't even want to give the co a chance to get their bait back when they are casting in the same direction towards the front of the boat. One guy I fish with said he would do a drive by. Which consisted of, putting the trolling motor on hi and driving by where I was hung up and would not even slow down to give get me a chance to reel down to the bait and push it off whatever it was hung on. However if pro's and co's could work like you and your co did during this tournament I would agree with you that the co would do much better by casting behind the boat getting the same attack angle but from a different direction. This all starts with good communication or conversation between the pro & co and if the pro is worried the his co is staying with someone and might talk the night before the tournament starts. The pro can tell the co to expect to be fishing a few different ways and then in the morning before take off they can have the conversation like what you had. It would make the day better for all.

To be honest at times it’s easier not being in the trolling motor all the time especially in windy conditions you have more time look at targets and angles etc because your only focus is on fishing not boat position etc. keep up the good fight Randy on FFS

I never use or have used a net when Bassn'... I though that they were illegal in B.A.S.S.tourney's?.. Well, back in the day at least I do believe landing nets were illegal. I've seen a lot of fish get away when using a net. I guess I'm just old skool, plus I just never liked nets being on my Bass rig, they just clutter up the deck or storage to me, but I'm not against them. However, I do use a hand held 'Lip Gripper' if I'm thrown' crank-baits or any bait with treble hooks, like a Zara Spook.
I'm glad that you had a great co-angler in your tourney!
    Thanks Rando!

I agree to a point....Randy. If you fishing tight with crankbaits with no room then yes the back of the boat is the area....not easy depending on your speed using the trolling motor. I will say that I would have casted off to your back side to the front for deeper water. Your not covering it and its wasted water...otherwise were cool....lol. Now when I catch a 5lb you'll turn back give me a look.....then you cast out in deeper water....then I cast to the dock....lol.....ARE WE COOL?😀

Randy, if I drew you as a co-angler, I would have no problem fishing behind the boat, but I’m permanently bewildered why any boater cares about the center line issue if the co-angler is respectful. If I’m casting at 45 degrees in front of the boat, then the co-angler can cast forward at the same angle and never be in my way. I’ve done this with my co-anglers dozens of times and never had a problem. But you’re not wrong about fishing behind the boat. If I was your co-angler, I wouldn’t ever mention getting hung up. I’d just break it off. Not going to tie on my Megabass square bills as a coangler.

I've been asked NOT to fish that way, but??? Also, you didn't tell us what you were using for bait. You did mention that you were fishing in 2' to 4' of water and at this time of year I'm guessing a crank bait or top water. either way I'm surprised your co-angler caught anything at all! Sounds to me that the young man that had to fish with you is one heck of a stick!

I fish as co and it's 100% about the boater and his ideas. I'm along for the ride and feel privileged to be out there. The only problem I ever have seen not particularly myself but some boaters get mad if a co catches fish behind the boater then get accused of catching the boaters fish. If the co do not throw in front of the boater and catches fish the way he is supposed too and does well some boaters get their pride hurt. I never understood that.i have never had that problem or atleast never heard a complaint. I have heard complaints in the weigh in line though and on youtube. I myself go above and beyond to give extra gas money and tell the boater at the start that I'm along for the ride and it's all about the boater and if I do well great but I won't intentionally do anything to hinder the boater but I make sure I tell the boater hey if I do something you don't like be sure you bring it to my attention because it's the last thing I would do intentionally. I think that does wonders as for breaking the ice and making the boater relax and know he don't have to worry about me. I also believe giving about $60 minimum up to $80, for gas before the start of the tournament does wonders for having a good day with your boater. Some of those boaters are struggling to pay fees and gas. It's unbelievably expensive so the least you can do as a coangler is help out financially and let them know you are going to be easy to get along with. If you don't see it the way I do then you might want to go finance a boat and become a boater then I bet you will realize quickly just how expensive just fishing the BFL is, not to mention the more elite tournaments. As a co yes try your best but the boater in in charge and adapt to what he decides to do. If you draw a boater that doesn't do what you think he should well get over it you are just along for the ride and you knew that when you entered the tournament as a coangler.

Now i no longer have a bass boat. Just multiple reservoir rowboats. When i get on somebody elses boat, i ask them. if we are talking or not? Just to pit it out there. I prefer some kind of communication but not unnecessarily. You gotta feel out your boater and apply common sense and respect. With that said, if you are good with your stick, you can do fine on the back of a boat. Ive won lunker 5 times off the back of someone else’s boat. I fish weekly, but not for a livin.

Yea well his man fame is he is an excellent kayak fisherman. I'm not knocking him at all, just saying I watched a video where he had built a FFS system made of PVC and other components that I believe took him about 3 or 4 minutes to.set it up.from the back of the boat and fished. It may have even been a tournament but can't remember for sure. Kits on RUclips somewhere. I'm sure if more co anglers catch on they'll be rules made up about it...I'm sure... Do you think they would?..

If they don’t believe this technique works just watch an episode or two of ultimate match fishing a lot of times the guys in the back of the boat end up winning or leading

Yep if the bass won't hit your crank he will likely hit the CO's worm as long as you are not going to fast with the tm.

Tenn Tom open had a boater Shane Meers I believe didn’t want me casting to the other side of the creek towards the back of the boat because he was gonna fish it…..before this he stops and haggles over fishing area in the the creek with Jeremy Starks then fishes to the back of creek turns around Starks was right there he flips his lid making promises of what he was going to do to him when he sees him and even made comments about going to the bank right there I never said a word the whole time but if they went to the bank I was going to kick both their asses I was in third place lol 😢

I cannot believe there is anyone that would want to be a co-angler with the use of forward facing sonar.

Guys dont really realize the ADVANTAGE someone can have in the back of the boat. The options available to you are simply amazing. If the pro angler shuts off the graph in the back then hes a dick sorry, and maybe Randy you could elaborate on this behaviour. But I will affirm what Randy is getting at here . Being in the back a powerful place to catch some giants. Just gotta put your head into this and use the space you have to your advantage...... Anyone ever just drag a jerk bait ? anyone even long line a finesse jig ? anyone ever notice how many fish thes guys leave behind ? especially in Randys case ( cause he hates forward scan AHAHAHAHA ) but you get my point. This position can wield some giants if you focus in and fish outside your comfort zone. you may learn a thing or two

I called MLF because I thought you couldn’t cast past midline of the boat.Well there’s no rule saying you can’t!With that being said I always try to position boat where we both can fish.If I can’t do it I tell them let me fish it 1st then I’ll give you a few minutes after what I was casting at.

If I drew Randy as a co angler I would buy some crappy water proof camera. Then put in the water all day and say I see one and cast. Do you think Randy would lose his mind? Lol

Well 3 years ago I'd set my alarm to get up and watch it . Then it got like a pod cast the announcers would tell stories while you watch guy drive around looking down not saying much . Lost interest so quit watching I think they had a great thing going Roland, Hank shaw Garry Larry Bill Jimmy those guys made it what it was nobody cherished what it was what they had it turned into greed and profits money 💰 🤑 💸 killed it that and greed anglers looking to make more with less everything but ....they had it all just like Nascar but ruined it now .
