  • Join Kurt Mazurek as he re-thinks his position on his braid-to-leader knot of choice. He's all about scientific proof and strong, logical rationale. Plus, he created the Fishing Forward brand years ago, because he is always striving to keep improving in his fishing skills and knowledge.
Recently, the RUclips algorithm gods served him up a new video from BassFishingHQ. The thumbnail was a close-up image of his beloved Double Uni knot with the title “You’ve Already FAILED If You Tie This BRAID-TO-LEADER Knot.” So, with an open mind Kurt reconsidered the good and bad of the Double Uni knot, the Alberto knot, and the FG knot.

i started out with the double uni knot because it was easier to tie did a few casting and didn't like how it was coming out and hitting my guide, so i decided to learn how to tie the fg knot.. have not been disappointed and loving how it runs through the eye

Sir Im having a lot of problems with the FG Knot, I don't know how to do It and some videos are WAY difficult to undertand.
Could you please share the video in wich you learn how to do It?

True! FG knot definitely slides through the guides better.

I tie the FG knot the night before with a really long leader but if something happens and I need to tie something quick I go to the crazy Alberto. Ott Defoe has a pretty good tutorial on how to tie the FG and is how I do it. But BassfishingHQ did a phenomenal gob on his knot videos I like the one he did for the bait connection knot for fluorocarbon/braid and best fluorocarbon they're probably the best videos on RUclips when it comes to those topics.

I bought a Daiichi Knot Assist 2.0 for tying the FG Knot. It is still pain to tie but the tool makes it easier.

Is there a junction knot better than the FG knot? Yes, the SC knot: stronger, easier ... a lot of easier ... a little bit thicker

Actually, YOU WERE RIGHT! Never saw a fish pull on my line the way the test is done. That is a static load rest and fishing loads are dynamic. That test may be valid and repeatable but NOT representative of really what happens on the water. Been tying double uni for over 10 years. Only 1 failed on the water, ever. Field results always trump simulations! Uni to Uni - It’s best choice for me fishing 10 lb braid to 8 lb. Flouro. If you can tie a good uni to uni, you’re good to go fishing. If you want to tinker on bench I guess you could use a different knot. Peace and good luck on the water,

That's a super interesting insight and I think a really valid point. Like I said, I didn't have many real world examples of the double uni failing on me. Thanks for the comment!

You are essentially saying that because you only had one failure he wasn't wrong? The video doesn't prove that the knot isn't effective. It proves that there is something better. You can't argue that. I'm sure the double uni will work for most applications. But if you want the best you don't tie it. But the convenience factor makes it worth the little loss. And a dynamic fish will make the line all the much prone to high enough force to snap. Maybe that one failure wouldn't happen if you didn't do the double uni 🤔

Anytime you hang a bait in rock, or wood, that requires you pull hard enough to straighten hooks, or break line, a double uni will break. A fg will hold, and the hook will straighten, or line will break at the lure/hook. So who's wasting time retying leaders. The double uni is a liability, and weak point, that has cost me fish, time and lost lures. I will never go back to using it.

@@Jeff-gu6nb Thanks for your reply. One failure on the water in 10 years. Why switch? Because a U Tube Video use a static bench test that shows my chosen knot is weaker? Many guys on u tube trying to tell guys to tie different knots, or go straight braid, etc. , etc. - solutions looking for problems. My point is you don’t have to feel like you must to make a change if you don’t have a problem. My one failure was not a bad knot, it was a worn knot… I should have re-tied. I don’t deny the test result showing the knot is weaker, I just don’t think the test represents the actual loads that occur and need to be managed when a fishing rod and drag are part of the actual system… I assume most fishermen actually use a rod and reel to absorb energy from the pull of the fish.
