- This is truly the best bass fishing knot, it beats the palomar, improved clinch, san diego jam knot and any other knot I compare it to!

There are a lot of different types of fishing knots out there on the market, but with that being said, when it comes to fishing fluorocarbon fishing line, the best knot is the double pitzen.
I have fished a lot of different knots over the years and many of them I would break off from time to time...that is not the case with this knot. I have literally never broke it. It is truly stronger than any other knot I have found!
BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

Ty-
I wanted to thank you profusely for introducing me to this knot. Since I have been using it, I have never went back to using anything else. This knot is so good that when I hooked a rock a few hours ago fishing on the Snake River from the shore, that when I pulled really hard to dislodge my bait, the jig ended up breaking from the hook instead of the line tie because it was so strong. Keep up all your great fishing tips. I really think between you, Matt Stefan and Matt and Tim from TacticalBassin you guys are simply the best out there giving their subscribers true value from the content you guys supply. Keep up the great work!!👍🏻🙂
I’ve been fishing fresh and saltwater for over 40 years and I tie one knot… the good ole advanced clinch… has never failed me!
The Double shindo over the hill beside the barn foot hole knot🔥
You forgot Brazilian!
Gman 🤣
I have been using this knot for 3 years. I called it the Shaw Grigby knot because he showed it to me. Thanks man for telling me it was the Double Pitzen. GREAT KNOT!!!!
100% agree, Shaw showed us this knot years ago
I learned this from watching the Shaw Grigsby video as well
Been using it for a few years. Never knew what it's called. Works fantastic. Stopped me from losing jigs on hooksets.
im sure it's a jimmy Huston knot....been using this for over 20 yrs...
@@mattdillion7646 used for 50 years best knot
It shows how strong fish are, it's a heartbreaking thing when this happens, lost so many back in the day, till I started doing this, thanks Tyler, you saved me from crying
Before watching this video, I tied on a spinnerbait with the trilene knot. Immediately after watching, I went back out and retied with this knot. I love that it is easy to learn. When I tried the FG knot, I had to keep watching the videos over and over and trying again and again. I was happy with the first try with this one.
There's a Salt Strong video where they show a really easy way to tie an FG wrapping the braid around your pinkie to keep tension on the braid while you work the leader around it. Hard to describe, very easy to tie. Got it on my first shot.
Seen BassGeek tie this knot, and started using it myself! I used the Palomar knot for everything, and would break off. I Switched when I saw a video of pros saying the Palomar knot was horrible for floro. Glad I know the name of it now, I hung up a brand new Megabass crank bait yesterday, and yanked on it for 15 minutes, and got it back without snapping off! Really wish I knew about this knot sooner! Thanks for the content HQ, I appreciate ya!
I was using 4lb fluoro with a Palomar and it broke off like with barely any pressure. I switched to 10lb fluoro and so far so good but this news makes sense to me now.
Four pound! Good God man
Originally when you first started I was thinking of lord another knot I can't tie because it seems I'm always all thumbs tying knots lol. But this looks very easy!!! And easy to do in the field, windy, rainy, wet hands. Very cool, I will definitely be trying this tomorrow 🤘🤘💪🇺🇲🇺🇲
Love it....this is great for also holding on bait like blood worms, I always slide my bait over the eye of the hook and those frays you have left on this knot will help hold the bait on better I bet, can't wait to try it, I've been looking for a knot like this and it's so simple to remember. Peace and Good Vibes coming your way
Good evening Bass Fishing HQ, DUDE! I am SOOOOOO IMPRESSED With this NEW KNOT, I'm STOKED to use it the nexted time I'm out Fish'n! Thank's Once Again! Sincerely, Mr. Carl J. Gwizdala aka "Desperado." LOL! 🙂
Wow the Double Pitzen I have never tried this knot. Just went through tying this about 10 times and really like the cinch. Thanks for this tip and thank you for the cold weather bank fishing tips for lakes and ponds you gave me at the Columbus Fishing Expo a couple weeks ago!
Totally agree… started using the double Pitzen 2 years ago & no more break off at the knot. Easy to tie & super strong.
I love this knot. Uses a bit more line, but ties easy and I've never had an issue with it snapping or coming undone.
I tied this knot today. Very easy! I admit, the first time i tied it i kinda freaked out when i saw the loop that was left over when i cinched it up. I rewatched the video and realized i was doing it right, i just wasn’t used to seeing the leftover loop.
Just in time. I’m hitting the neighborhood ponds tomorrow to fish the Berkley Gilly and a Zoom Z-swim underspin (aka super sized roadrunner!). Thank you sir!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Everything you said in the first 3 minutes of this video happened to me over the last couple years. It was almost as if you lived my fishing life. I've seen other videos on this knot but when I saw your video recommending it, I was sold. I'm going to start using it this year and hope to have as much success with it as you do. I use P-line 8Lb fluoro so I don't think it's the line and the biggest fish I'll probably catch here in Colorado is 5 to 6 lbs. I may jump to a 10 or 12 lb fluoro just to be safe though.
Knot knowledge is great, but knowing what they're actually for and how they work is more important. No knot is all around "superior" to all other knots, but several of them are superior for their correct application than many others.
Also, fun fact, most people tying a Palomar do it incorrectly because they don't have their line laid out correctly when they pull it. The failed tie will get you by just fine for the majority of fishing applications, but when tied correctly is way stronger than the failed version most people are doing.
Glad to see some coverage of knot anatomy going on in your videos.
I had the same problem as you! I would snap off at the hook with fluorocarbon so often that I just started going straight to braid . Then I found this knot and it is a life changer. I use it on everything not braid. Awesome video!
Fantastic knot! Started using it last year and wish I had started using it years ago.
A fishing guide thought me the knot about 10 years ago and it has been my go to knot ever since.
Great tip, thanks for sharing. I really appreciate your communication skills and video skills. They have helped me a lot.
I use the double San Diego jam I think. Never mind that is the knot I use. I have seen the double pit zen shown a little different. Blauket calls that a double uni. Whatever you call it that knot has never failed me flipping. I still use the polymar for cranking and horizontal lures. Great video. Thanks!!
It’s pretty much the same thing lol 😂 San Diego just wanted a knot named after it .
Like I mentioned to you last week I’ve gone almost exclusively with the double pitzen. Awesome knot
Checking the line for abrasions before tying any knot is a must do.
learned this as the Double San Diego Jam knot, been using it on anything needing a sharp hook set
This is a great knot! I've done similar knot vs knot tests, and this one wins. Thanks so much for showing us the Double Pitzen!
Interesting knot. I use the improved clinch knot fishing mostly mono 12lb. On braid I tie an overhand knot and then the clinch knot over it. Has worked for me for years now.
50 years later it has never failed me once
@@nobodyhome8148 You must be using 80 lb test to catch bluegills then. LOL
@@FishNFoolLures no, I just know what the drag knob is for 🤣
99% of my experiences with line breaking has been with straight Flourocarbon line. Anywhere from 10 to 16 lb test. A few years back I started using a Copolymer, Flouro coated line and have not had even one break off at hook set. I tie almost exclusively the improved clinch knot, but I will definitely give this double pitzen a shot.
Robert D Timmerman you experienced the same thing as many other fishermen have with fluorocarbon Lines breaking at the knot. Monofilament & Copolymer fishing lines are not as brittle definitely have more stretch. I like to use P-Line FloroClear
@@d10dozerman2 So it's not just me. I too noticed that fluoro can not take hardly any shock. Brittle is the best way to put it (like you said). If fishing line was measured like knife steel in Rockwells, Fluorocarbon would be in the low to mid 70's. Way too hard.
This knot is the shiz. Been using it a few years. Always thought it was called the Shaw Grizby knot. An added benefit is that the direction of the tag end acts as a hook keeper if you slide your plastic over the knot. Sometimes I use glue to make the tag ends a little stiffer for this purpose. On the downside, this knot catches a lot of weeds if not covered with plastic. If I’m fishing around cheese I’ll switch to a Trilene since the tag on the knot points toward the lure.
I use the single Pitzen knot for a few years and it has worked very well for me. I'll have to try this knot next time out. Thanks for sharing.
First knot I ever learned from my dad was a single pitzen then learned polamar and tied it ever since. Never thought about doubling a pitzen love it! Gonna give it a try!
The D/P knot rules learned it from a Shaw Grigsby video several years ago, never looked back doesn't matter floro or mono. Keep up the great content. Tight lines.
Well, I changed all my setups to double pitzens. I am not breaking anything off at the hook. Our lake is down for winter pool. Got hung up a couple of times yesterday and put it to the test. Setting a hook will be a relative snooze. I was using the palomar previously. This is a useful change. Thanks for putting it out there.
My knot slipping out with a big bass is the reason I viewed this and I very much appreciate it,I just practiced this knot and it was incredibly easy and I can tell that it'll definitely hold up better than the palamer knot
That is just a double San Diego Jam knot…without the bottom loop added.
Double San Diego jam knot is the ultimate. Period.
I've been using this knot as soon as I started fishing with fluorocarbon and for the exact same reason. When I first used fluorocarbon, the knots would always break at the knot but didn't have issues with braid and Palomar knot. I've researched and tried multiple knots, and the double pitzen was the winner in my tests also with fluorocarbon.
I had the same problem with the Palomar where it would break upon shock. I use the Trilene now which is ridiculously strong for mono and caught 5 bass today without issues, but that Pitzen looks like something I should learn.
thx! bro! bring more of these reference tests to help the anglers all over the world!
Never seen this knot before looks like it works great. I have been using the other knot. Haven't ever had any problems. I will give your knot a try. Thank you for sharing 👍
This is most underrated knot it will outlast every other knot known to anglers
Thank you so much for your knowledge and for sharing it. I had trouble tieing this knot on hooks never dawned on me to use something like scissors. Been watching your videos for two yrs now writing notes on them so I can review what you say. Of all the fishing videos yours seem to help me understand the best about fishing. Keep it up there are people listening to your insight.
Tyler, been using this for years just didn’t know what was called. Thanks ! I really love your channel. Keep up the good work!!
Tied this knot on the other day, went fishing today. Got hung up. Dear lord. I’ve never had to pull so hard to get the thing to break off.
Great knot, and best part is that it is super easy to tie!
I use this knot in combination with a Bimini Twist for Bass and Saltwater. I have never broken off a fish with that combination. I actually came up with this knot on my own 20+ years ago. I had learned I assume the single Pitzen, just by pure mistake. My dad was trying to show me the Uni Knot and I did it wrong , but it was a good knot so I tied it ever since.
That is my new favorite knot because of you Tyler. I appreciate it!!
I use Palomar knot because I can tie it in like 3 seconds, but I do lose some fish on hooksets when the line snaps at the knot.
Tha is a great knot. Been using it for 10+ years. Was having the same issues that you described. It is about the only knot I use anymore! Great info!!!
Wow man,I'm surprised that this is very very easy to not only do but remember as well. I came to this video because I just started using straight flouro and just had one of the biggest bass I've ever caught, break off just as I lifted him outta the water, thanks man
I’ve been fishing this knot, and it’s been working out great so far.
Even when trimming those 3 tag ends as close as possible, they seem to snag more algae, weeds etc than the palomar or improved clinch. Dabbing on a little krazee glue over the tag ends seems to help.
Thanks. I knew about the knot & use it but did not know the scissors step, AWESOME!
I've used that knot for years and agree it is one of the best. I make three more wraps when tying it with braid.
shaw grigsby showed that knot 3 or 4 years ago as a excellent flourocarbon knot and I found it to be a very good all around knot. he called it the "no name "knot. great video.
When there is a lot of debris in the water I use the Trilene knot, strong and just one tag end pointing in the best direction
Something most people don't understand about high end flourocarbons, some mono's and co polymers is the extreme low friction surface finish on them. When you wet lines like these when tightening knots and hitches it creates a huge amount of friction that can cause a lot of line damage as the surfaces moving over each other effectively stick/weld together. Best example would be trying to move two sheets of glass with water between them vs two dry pieces. It's worth trying out tying your knots/hitches without wetting them, high gloss finish on the line is a possible indicator they will tighten up better dry.
I will be trying this knot... and I'll be comparing it in a similar fasion as you've done to the ""Trilene Knot"" I'm use to using. Very interested to see the results. Thanks for another good video!
Totally agree, double pitzen is the only knot I tie on fluoro or mono. Can be used on braid as well but I 99% of the time tie a double palomar on braid but I do also time a snell knot when necessary oh and the fg knot when using leader applications
I’ve tried all those knots. The Uni knot works for everything . Doesn’t waste any line and is easy to tie. I’ve never broke off at the knot. So that what I use most of the time now.
I love the uni so easy to tie. Try it doubled over for even more strength.
I'm raising my hand for the Uni as well, it's great for tying on any terminal tackle, hooks or lures. I use the Albright for braid to leaders, often 10lb PowerPro braid to 6 or 8lb fluorocarbon.
Lol, i did not know what this was called. ive been tying this for about 5 years (after breaking off a King Salmon at the knot way back when, ouch!) No break offs at this knot!!! Love your vids & tips, keep em coming!! Thank you!!!
I'm glad you did this video! I've questioned about this many times. I used the improved cinch for many many years
I've been using the improved clinch knot for many years, it seems to perform better with thicker line say 30lb+. I'm going to give this one a go on my lighter rigs and see how we go, sick of the knot slipping on hook sets. Thanks for the tip
I've had every knot I tried - except improved clinch knot - fail. Especially with flurocarbon.
This double Pitzen is a variation of the clinch. Should work well
I use an improved clinch knot for braid, fluoro, mono, and I target monster tarpon…. Never had those knots fail. Just my experience. It never slips for me
Now that I watched you closer on this..... this will replace my other knots. I use a knot very similar to my braid/ leader line and it always breaks at the hook knot. Thank you sir!!!! Happy camper now!!
At this time of year I catch at least as many northern pike as I do bass, so I always have a 30 to 50 pound fluoro leader tied on. I use the regular Pitzen for that and for tying on flies. For fluoro that is 25lb or less, the double Pitzen is my go-to knot.
Double pitzen knot is the only knot I use on flouro, however, I still fish mono and the palomar knot works great in that application for me.
Spot on with hard set, that fish needs to know your serious too,,,, I was taught always to wet the line at drawdown so great advice there, and the knot is awesome, going to put that into use next outing
Been using that knot for all fluorocarbon lines and it is awesome as you said. Great vid!
There's a lot of line stubs pointing back at the rod when you're done. Those stubs will collect grass and weeds on the retrieve. I add one step and run all those ends back throgh the loop just above the hook's eye. Makes the size of the knot a bit larger but, less to catch weeds on the retrieve.
This is such a great knot. Easy to tie, and strong.
Thank you.
Same happened to me on Palomar. Sometimes it's super strong, occasionally it just let's go for no reason
We'll done video 👍. Terrific knot for fluorocarbon 8-15#. Has the added advantage over the Palomar - that you don't have to pass awkward baits through the loop.
Granted I’m not fishing near as often as you but I have never had a problem with my palomar on braid and ultralight rod.
I’m still going to try the double pitzen it seems pretty easy
Absolutely the best knot ever. Changed my fishing also 👍🏻
I’ll be trying this one to
Thanks you just saved a beginner budget fisherman a lot of lures and hooks 😅
Man I had an absolute heartbreak this past weekend at lake lbj in Texas. Flipping a jig underneath an concrete dock had an absolute giant hit my jig. Set the hook, got her to the boat and at the last second she took off hard and just snapped my line. Had to be at least a 7-8 lber. Went from the Palomar to the double pitzen right then and there and got a 5.2 the next morning on the water. Not the giant i lost but still an awesome bass to land.
It's definitely a strong, reliable knot but it's a weed collector fishing from the bank more so than other knots due to 3 tag ends facing forward using fluorocarbon or copolymer line. Fishing in open water it's a great knot. I should try the knot on straight braid the tags ends will fold back. Nice video, thanks!
A friend showed me this knot and I’ve been using it for a few years now. I never know what it’s called but watching you tie it 😂 it’s the same knot and a good darn one.
I've been using the double pitzen knot since 2000. And never failed me once. It is very reliable and I use it while Sea & Fresh water fishing.
Thanks for the great informative video!!
You briefly mentioned that you didn't use it on the liter poundage FC. I am a trout fly fisher. I sometimes go all the way to 1 lb. Test. Once in clear lake I was rejected with 4 lb. Test. Then with the same fly it was pounced on immediately with 1 pound test.
So how lite a FC line is knot still effective?
Thanks
just jim
Just started using the double pitzen thank you great video
Looks like a awesome knot and awesome transition to that sponsor plug. Keep it up!
I love using this knot and Know Ill do the double . Thank you
The Jimmy Houston knot is a double pitzen. It's very effective. Palomar knot is very good and easy to tie though as is the improved clinch. I always say fish your confidence but objectively I think the double pitzen is the best knot when in doubt and you really need knot strength.
So is the blaukat double uni knot lol.
A well cinched triple surgeon is pretty freakin strong I've ripped so many rigs out of snags on 6lb line with that one.
That looks like the jimmy Huston knot
I am going to try this clinch. I also enjoy your channel. Great job.
Palomar easy- 😆 I still can’t get it
( this I've seen, here in south border, they use a double knot , through the eye, then hook through the eye, of the line, so can be changed fast and easy , and secure. !)
I switched to some slick braided line and no matter how many wraps i did on the clinch know it would slip out with almost no pressure. Doesnt happen to me with the palomar know but i have had lures go flying on cast so i will give the double pitzen a shot.
Down to try this out, hard to lay down the san diego jam but I will admit it does have issues with slipping if not tied perfectly. Never heard of the double pitzen, thanks Ty!
Thanks for showing how to tie this knot, I've seen it many time on youtube but did not know the name or how it was tied.
I’ve never had an issue w a palomar
I have never had an issue with a double pitzen. Polomar is a great knot for braid but not so much for flouro or mono.
I’ve sit for hours testing knots like a true fishing nerd. The Palomar, Double Clinch, Double Pitzen, Doubled Uni and many others along with leader knots.. I have came to trust the double line SDJ over everything. I also do 3 wraps like the Pitzen no matter the line size. In the case of braided line I will do 4 to 5 wraps depending on the diameter.. The Double Pitzen is great though, I would feel pretty confident in it as well.
I’ve been testing knots myself as well. I’ve found that the Trilene knot beats the double pitzen, double SDJ, doubled palomar and Uni and improved clinch. Tested with 15 pound fluro and 10 pound mono.
@@butterytoast4836 only thing I don’t like about the Trilene Knot is when you cinch, especially with fluorocarbon, the loop through the eye has a lot of friction. Fluorocarbon doesn’t like friction and heat.. If I do tie it, I like to tie it in reverse like a reverse clinch, which is a little harder to keep the loop placed right with the Trilene knot. They just cinch up better in the reverse, and tests have show the reverse clinch method is stronger than the standard.. Whatever works best for you is what you should use, it’s double SDJ for me.
If you cross your line at the eye of the hook when tying a Palomar knot on flouro your line will cut it self on the hook set. You have to make sure your line is parallel on the eye of hook when the knot tightens
🎉yay I did it. Had to watch vid several times and saved it to my library until it gets to be 2nd nature.
Also can you test a double fisherman's knot what's for braid to floral
I've been tying this knot for a couple years now. I absolutely love it, I just didn't know what it was called. Oddly enough, I learned it fishing at an open.
Great clinch info. I learned that no not knot from RUclipsr Greg Blanchard earlier this year. It's been good to me for sure, but I didn't know what it was called. Thanks to you, now I can let others know what I now know. You have a ton of knowledge for a young guy, but it's been a good idea to follow it. Granted, I generally fish off the bank, but most of the applications you provide can be used either way. Thanks
Excellent knot and video.
I've been using this knot for years. It does snag grass with those tag ends though
Jimmy Houston gets credited for many knots also the triley knot. All these nuts are good just use whatever works for you if you lay down the Palomar knot correctly it is the strongest but you can easily mess it up. Keep fishing
I tie a double uniknot on anything over 3/8th of an ounce. A double uni and this look almost identical when tied and the tag-ends left.
Likewise. +1 for the double uniknot. Did the single uni for years until I discovered the double uni.
You're right. This is an alternate way to tie the double line uni.
I’ve been using that knot for several years but didn’t know what it was called & agree it is the strongest knot I’ve ever used.
Palomar knot is the best and what most of the FLW and MLF pros use.
For braid yes but not flurocarbon
Love this knot seen a video G man did a couple years ago he didn’t know the name of he called it the floro knot. I have been using it ever since on all line not just floro
